The HPI is SO important!

Ask clinicians, we are trained on the basic parts of a patient interview/exam: medical history, surgical history, current medication, allergies, social history, history of present illness (HPI), physical exam, review of systems (ROS), objective testing (labs, imaging, etc.), medical decision making (MDM), plan, and disposition. Unfortunately, some of these very important categories are overlooked or underappreciated. A quote that I’ve heard is “the answer is always in the HPI.“ Now while this may not be true for 100% of cases, sometimes imaging or lab testing or physical exam is absolutely necessary to diagnose or at least narrow down the differential diagnosis, but the importance of the history cannot be overlooked. in this video, I tell a quick patient story demonstrating exactly why that is.
