Dry brushing is my favorite. It's amazing how quickly a piece pops when you use that technique. I also can vouch for using cheap hobby paints. Great way to get in to painting.
Good thing about those cheap craft paints its cheap to test what brands near you work well. The hobby lobby brand "Crafters collection" has been very good to me for .50.
I just started buying model paints a few months ago and I really have not found them to be that superior. I have added water to the model paint in the bottle and they become the same consistency as model paints. They dry flat and actually dry faster. Glazes from craft paint dry faster over craft paint. I rarely resort to a hair dryer. Craft paint can be thinned to be used as the new speed paints... Excellant work! I was facinated watching you. Thanks.
Love a mixture of slapchop and layering. The new army painter line is pretty epic. Great coverage and good blends. I learned to paint on craft paint and figured out diluting them with water different mediums and even with new paint ranges, I still love using craft paint. Best cost to value lol
The cheap stuff is all I use. The trick is patience, thinning down paints as best you can, and base coating in brighter colors that you can wash with super thinned acrylic later. I typically make homemade washes with a few dabs of regular paint, dish soap, and water.
I am actually impressed how well craft paint has worked for me for terrain pieces, and I, like you, would hate to waste a bottle of Pro acryl on something that's massively and pre-dominantly one color, like floor tile or wood. Speaking of, I've recently used your Altar Quest video for painting up the base game, and I'm about 85% done, and happy with the results. Great info!
Cool Video, honestly i dont play but paint some minis here and there and never tryed any cheaper Paints. Mabe ill give it a try after seeing ur results :-) thx Mr Geek
I agree with you about once you get into a brand of paints, like speedpaints, I stick with them. They've been working well for me. Steamforged Games bought out a company that has a paint set. I think it's called P3. They'll have a KS on it in Sept, IIRC. I doubt I'll back any of it, but hopefully it'll be a good deal $$ for those getting into painting.
I've been building models for nearly 28yrs myself. I added craft paint to my arsenal about 10yrs ago and it has been a boon. I despise mixing paint so the color variety is fantastic at such cheap prices. Can get 3-5 times more for my money than branded miniature paints. Definitely awesome for auto modelers for those weird interior colors. The biggest thing for success is using a primer. Craft paint isn't fond of smooth surfaces.
I am surprised that this came out so well, especially the metallics which are a challenge to get to show well, even with mini paints. I'm going to try some craft metallic paint on some terrain. Has anyone tried combining this with an oil paint wash?

I exclusively use craft paint for miniatures and like this the results are great and tons of color choices
wow you did an amazing job with those, the amount of colour schemes is awesome

Did Steamforged buy out Privateer press? That's who had Formula P3. I have their full line and love it.

4:58 where did you get that crab from?
It's in the base box - Korowon.
Impressive, I had only thought to use them for terrain.
Folkart paints are great for glazing because they spread so thinly. Apple Barrel is my favorite brand to use for base colors and highlights.

You can use an oil paint wash as craft paints are acrylic and will not melt from oil paint.
What size of brush (what brand) are you using for most of the painting?
I have always used cheap acrylic paints for minis. I would never buy expensive paint for minis it isn't that necessary to get good results.
