Here is the first video from our trip the to NE Coast! Kicking it off with a Short-fin Mako Catch Clean Cook. This was seriously top 3 best tasting fish of all time. Big thanks to Joe and Erick Faust for the amazing trip! We were fishing offshore near the New York Coast. These are highly migratory predators and the fastest sharks on earth!

The mako shark, both shortfin and longfin, are listed as globally endangered on the IUCN Red List due to their being heavily targeted for their fins. Their slow growth, late maturity and lengthy gestation period has put them at huge risk of overfishing.

Na man you are wrong. I just checked the shortfin mako shark population where they're at and looked at 4 different reports and they all seem to show them as well as other sharks thriving in the area. Now other places in the world they are being over fished but not in this particular area

@@LarryOrtwine who is we? And who made the fish endangered. If people fish the babies of a species constantly and let them grow and mature so there will be the next generation of that fish how you are not partially responsible for the endangerment of that species. My grandfather and I ve been fishing for many years if we caught a small fish which has not yet be grown to an adult we just release the fish. Just that simple. We had all the other fishermen saying oh I LL feed these small ones to my cat.Now if you go to same spot and try to fish the same spot you can hardly find anything. Just to paint the picture.
The spot I am refering to is a really small port on the west of a greek island smack down in the middle of the Agean sea. The small village has maybe had a population of a 100. The only boat you LL find there is maybe a coast patrol one twice a week and a boat carrying some produce once a week. The port is ten meters deep and if the sea is calm you can literally see the bottom. Crystal clear waters. So with stupidly overfishing the next generation of fish in the area we managed to get rid most of the fish in like 20 years. So who is responsible there in your opinion. Mind you there is no pollution in the area. Please let me hear you thoughts on this.
      Disclaimer:
I am not ignorant I know the commercial fishing industry in general and sea pollution has played a huge role in fish population. But that does not relieve someone of the responsibly that you destroy the next generation of an endangered species of you don't release it. That's the part you can affect yourself easily and without any cost for you. That's all I am saying

I’m not opposed to keeping fish at all (I’m a fisherman myself), but when we kill more than 100,000,000 sharks a year, we need to be more conscientious of what species we are taking.

This is cool until you realise Mako's are listed as endangered in some parts of the world and soon becoming a protected species due to overfishing. A Mako like that would have been a mature aged breeding Mako and important to the maintaining the population... I'm honestly heart broken. There's something deeply disturbing about overfishing sharks, especially Mako's, being the fastest shark in the world and as beautiful as they are; it will be deeply saddening if we had to see them go.

Solid hook set, that fish wasn't going anywhere.
For shark, I think the best rig is 3' of piano wire to 12' of cable. Even if the fish swallows the hook deep, your cable won't get frayed from those razor sharp teeth. You can always have another wire section ready to put it onto the swivel quickly.
