If the old version was the new one:
-We managed to remove the holes outperforming the old drilled version by 1 extra certified kN in both cross load and open gate resistances which were the main fracture risks, we also increased a tiny bit the size for extra clipping ease, and still reduced the production cost and retailing price besides de marginal extra 2gr of high grade aluminium used in this upgrade. Plus the transparent string provides obvious safety.
Anyway, regardless of the nonsense it remains a great product coz it's quite the same.

    The absolute onsight QuickDraw. Nice.

Not a fan of updating for the sake of updating, without bringing any real meaningful changes.

Wish they made a rack pack with the Ange instead of the Spirit.

Why making the carabiner smaller (i know it maybe just a tiny bit... but why?)?
BUT: The whole point of the transparent rubber/plastic piece to keep the ropeside carabiner in place is, that everyone can see if the carabiner runs through the dogbone and not just the plastic.
So, if the quickdraw is assembled correctly. Not just by the manifacturer, also by people who build quickdraws themselves with the separate parts.
Anyone who thinks that this is not and never was a big deal, you might google Tito Traversa, a boy who fell to his death because all the quickdraws failed, due to the ropeside carabiner not beeing held by the dogbone, but just the rubber/plastic piece itself.
So, if the transparent piece is made colored and not see through again, it defeafts the whole purpose of its beeing made transparent before. Ok, the transparent look was not that pretty, but who cares? Function follows form, like Apple? Yuk!
Anyway... I got my Spirit quickdraws before they changed the dogbone to black with white stripes. I kind of wand the brighter dogbones to stay.
Only option I would go for, are the Ange dogbones, because they have the same form as the Spirit dogbones, but are bright and even lighter because of them beeing dyneema instead of normal nylon.
I suppose the grabbing is a bit worse, because dyneema has less friction, but since the form is equal, it should go i suppose?
But the other concern is that, especially for longer dogbones (i nearly always use the 17cm version), that they twist more easy instead of hanging straight down, no matter what.
All in all: Spirit: darker dogbone with transparent rubber, now even darker with black rubber + everso slight smaller and "rounder" carabiners with holes in them, to get that 2g down.
    Holy mouly.
Not really impressed. But ok, if you don't want to make radical changes, which would make it a different product, you are left with "just" a slight Evolution.
And for those who don't have these quickdraws and are interestedm they may get the latest iteration, no problem.

Looks as though the rope side carabiner is smaller as well which… for maybe 2 grams on a hefty sport draw seems a poor choice. Will keep using my camp photons for onsight use.

Pretty cool. I expect we'll see this carried over to the spirit locker?

I really don't like that the new ones are smaller, it's just a tiny but but in direct comparison the old ones clip quite a bit easier in my personal opinion...

Punch two holes and call it a new carabineer. Smart .

Not a fan of the darker dog bone and REALLY don't like that they encourage customization but then don't sell the draw set in any other colour options...

Are those cararbiners at 21seconds worn, i see grooves.

    • @WeighMyRack
      @WeighMyRack  Рік тому +12

No, they're not worn. Most modern carabiner designs utilize a pretty aggressive "notch" at the rope radius. The reason for it is to make passing the UIAA tests a bit easier. With the notch, the rod that is used to pull-test the carabiner is less likely to walk down toward the nose of the carabiner, which leads to its eventual failure because it's no longer loaded along the spine. It's a design feature that doesn't really have much practical benefit in use, but has a significant advantage while making a product that passes all the necessary certifications. To be clear, Petzl is by no means the only company that utilizes such a design. Many, if not most incorporate it to some degree.

ughhh I understand manufactures are desperate to reduce any sliver of weight but the holes are not exactly confidence inspiring

Is Petzl adding some overlap with the SMD carabiner or maybe replacing it by adding the holes?
No mention of the Spirit locker, or the reason for the expensive product update or how it fits in the line.
I see others complaining that spirit is smaller now, but Djinn is still the large carabiner

Changed nothing, added colors... Wow révolution. Hey petzl we see that,... Our helmets are made in China, our reversos are made in England... Our harness made in Malaysia ... J'appréciais le made in France, désormais je n'achète plus mes mousquetons chez vous. 🙄
