  • As my viewers know, I am in the process of planning a big Alaskan trip during the summer of 2017. I and my com-padres, have been outfitting our bikes and doing practice runs so that we are ready to go next summer. Previously, I created a video covering part of this training process; in particular, riding a 500-mile day on an adventure touring bike.
This video sparked a lot of great conversation about what is an appropriate number of miles to travel each day while on a long tour. Generally, the consensus is that the few number of miles you can travel the better. keeping the number of miles down around the 200 to 300-mile range, allows you to relax and spend time seeing and experiencing the beauty along your route. While I agree that 200 to 300 miles is ideal, often the reality is that touring motorcyclist must deal with time constraints due to work and family obligations.
That is where this blog, and its accompanying video (Planning Your Route) come into play. I decided to cover the basic process I go through when planning a route. There is of course a lot more that goes into it, but I think this is a good place to start. As we go through the planning process for our trip to Alaska, I will cover other topics pertaining to trip planning.
