My dad gift me a Garmin Zumo because he told me is better to have a GPS than to only have a cell phone when riding a motorbike. Thanks for the information, it was very useful to me! Cheers from Colombia.
Thanks for the video! There are GPS guys (you are obviously one, I am also one) and there are definitely non-GPS guys. Somehow the GPS guy always gets the lead when a few guys are navigating a reasonably complex and scenic route, say, from Coeur d'Alene, ID to Yaak, MT. Then, the pressure is definitely on for the GPS guy in the lead! You really want to have that route perfectly nailed down in the planning stage, NOT when you've got four or five pals following you out in the boonies! I recommend adding a couple extra steps after you get that route into BaseCamp. Copy the route, then reduce the number of waypoints by the "motorcycle > direct > motorcycle boogie" recommended by Roger Gustavasson below. Finally, "pre-run" your route by looking at each waypoint and moving it as required to make the intended route run more smoothly (moving a waypoint past an intersection rather than at an intersection for example). This is a hassle, but worth it later on when your pals are following you on those small back roads. DAMHIK.
It is definitely NOT a crude video Greg. You put a lot of time and effort into it and I for one got a lot from it. I have a Garmin which has the ‘Auto’ recalculation which can’t be switched to ‘ask me’ but your work around was new to me and will be a big help and staying on the better riding roads. Cheers and again many thanks. A big thumbs up.
OMG - I have been searching for this video since I have bought my Garmin! This has been hands down the most helpful video I have seen!!!! Thank you, thank you!
I am using this method for my Zumo XT in July 2020 and it works like magic. Thanks for making this video, helped a lot. I tried the simpler methods of gpx conversion and whatever you do i could not get that to work. This is more intuitive and definitive method as well.
Awesome video. I've got a new zumo 396 and have been trying for a week to plan a route using basecamp, google maps, etc. -but just haven't been able to put it all together. Thanks to this video I've got it now. Thanks Greg!!
I'm hoping you still monitor comments on this video so that you get my huge thanks for taking the time and trouble to create this guide. I wasn't aware that google maps could be used in this way. This is a game-changer for me as I am just about to get back into taking longer trips on my motorcycle. I was so not relishing the prospect of creating routes on basecamp again. The Garmin application is so unwieldy and time consuming. And as you point out at the beginning of the video, there are all sorts of other useful advantages to trip planning with Google Maps. Superb solution! Thank you Sir.
Thank you Greg! Your instructions on how to create a routing map in Google, transfer to BaseCamp and then on to my Zumo is exactly what I've been looking for in route planning for a long time. Have a great ride!
Best tutorial I have ever found covering the aspects of Google Maps, Base Camp, and creating tracks, then routes. Not to mention how to download them to your GPS. You get a two thumbs up!!
I've watched many a video on how to achieve this, most of which bamboozled me but this one worked 1st time and is so easy to follow. It also included the best tip on what to do about recalculating the route - which explains why a recent trip back from Switzerland didn't go entirely according to plan - I thought it rerouted onto the originally planned route and not just the quickest/shortest. Brilliant work Greg, no idea how I missed this last year - will subscribe and like and if I'm ever in your neck of the woods in the States I'll buy you a pint
I refer back to it every time a trip is being considered. That's only because I can't remember how to do it from one trip to another because I've slept between trips. Really well done and thanks for all your time and trouble.
So helpful! Just invested in a Garmin ZUMO XT and figuring out the best way to prepare for a great trip. Look forward to getting the most out of Google Maps and Basecamp and my ZUMO.
My brother and I have sorted this out recently, many thanks to your video explanation Greg. I've been planning 'roads less traveled' rides occassionly for the past 20+ years. My brother and I enjoy doing them, as it allows for a more enjoyable relaxed ride/pace. In the past I used to use 2 or 3 paper maps of the surrounding road networks of our hometown, in as to plan a ride within a 100 mile (160km) radius. Once a ride was plotted, I'd pre-ride it alone to ensure it flowed without too many dead ends/turn arounds. Didn't take long for me to begin having a strong dislike to planning rides, much to my brother's disappointment. Now with Google maps resources I no longer as much, frown on planning rides. As the Google/Garmin nexus is complimentary to each other, the temperamental beast that is BaseCamp, no longer has me totally frustrated. Having used Garmin GPS devices for the past 20 years for rides, and watching the development of digital mapping to the present day. It can only be a bonus, from here on. A 'road less traveled' becomes a road worth anticipating on a journey.
Just got a ZUMO and saw your Video many times THANK YOU. Was able to create and map out a 247 mi loop in northern NH and VT. Can't wait to run the route this coming weekend 9/12/2020!
Thank you for the vid, I have just began to experiment with base camp. Love how you would be willing to make a 2 hour journey into a 4 or 5 hour trip. Safe journeys
Best explanation I ve heard so far on Garmin basecamp, Google map & garmin GPS. Thanks a lot, very simple explanation well DONE !!! Un must see to anybody start navigate on a motocycle !
Hi Greg, Thnk you for sharing this. I was struggling for two days, trying to figure out how to build a custom route and then transfer that to my Zumo XT. I tried a few different ways based on youtube videos, but none of them were working. Finally, your method took care of it! I have bookmarked your video, and I intend to write down the steps for future reference. Thx t your son too. Cheers!
Great video Greg. Some of this I was aware of but your comments on automatic vs prompted recalc was spot on. I finally got that AHAH!! moment where I now see why my previous attempts sometimes worked but frequently failed. I’m now using Prompted as the method, unless I’m just wandering around to explore other route options. Thanks so much. Goldwing Tour, Zumo XT, Sena 50S, and CarPlay.
A very well explained tutorial. I've been toiling with route planning using Basecamp every time I go to Europe on the bike . At best it's a very time consuming process that occasionally works as planned, but most times it just doesn't. I'm not particularly interested or competent in the use of computers but your clear steps and explanations have enabled me to use Google Maps like I've always wanted to. My wife and me are leaving for North Western Spain in the coming days and thanks to your video I appear to have managed to create what should be a stunning route from Ojedo to Tudela. Thank you for your help!!😀
Thank you so much for your clear & informative video. It has taken the frustration out of directly planning a route on Base Camp. Take care & safe riding.
Thanks Greg for the great video. I have referred to it many times. It is few and far between when I do your process. I love being able to go back to this and refresh myself.
Well done 👍👍 and very helpful. I looked quite a lot of video's how to create and to stay on a route. This is the first one that made it clear in a simple and understandable way including the pitfalls. Thanks very much 🙏.
Best video I have seen yet !!...you explain it very well and you have helped me a lot!...especially the problem with the garmin "re-route" after loading it the the Garmin...it answered my questions, regarding the problems I had, while driving. Greetings from Denmark
If you want to end up with a route you can recalculate, import the KMZ-file into Basecamp as described, but when you make it a route use the Activity profile "Direct". You get the choise to reduce the number of "points" because the Track concists of a large number of them. After the "direct" route is created dubbleclick on it and change the profile to "Motorcycle", or any other. The route will be recalculated with the chosen profile and will now be as any other route. The route you end up with may not be exactly as the track due to the reduction of "points" but this is easily fixed with the tools in Basecamp. This works in Basecamp version 4.7.1. And I have also used this method in earlier versions. I hope this make sense as English is not my first language.
Garmin change the behaviour of this (I think … 😁) with the newest of there Motor Navigation tools the Zumo XT. And now you can go of the track, and it wil not recalculate. I use this when I’m frist doing some Higway before I reach my entry point of the route. In the mean time you wil see a dashed line pointing to the entry point of the Route.
Nice Greg! Thanks about recalculation information and route creation ... I just import the kmz.. Now i will do this in Basecamp. I'm planning a travel to Argentina, Chile and Uruguay next month. I will change all my 16 kmz files to a route in basecamp. Thanks again dude.
Nice video well explain. That’s exactly what I was doing since now! I was using the Garmin navigator lV since 10 years and replace it for the new Garmin XT last week. You can use it the exact same way that you do but everything will be much faster because of the CPU. But one of the very nice new option is that you can use your phone with Google and sent your map to your Garmin XT using Garmin Drive app. So now in real time on the road I can use my phone with Google to create my map and send it to the GPS and it is very fast! Some will say why you don’t use your phone all the time? Well try it and you will understand!!!
FINALLY!! Great work! I hate basecamp but you did a masterful job of getting me through it and finally getting a route, that I designed, to upload onto my Zumo. THANK YOU
Are you by any chance a teacher? Because you showed me only things I already new and yet I left your video with tons of new ideas - really terrific. Thanks a lot!
hello Greg, thanks for the very detailed layout how to upload from Google to my Garmin Zumo XT. have been trying for over a week to upload my created files. Non of the other sites did such a great job.
Thanks for taking the time to make this vid!! I have been working in basecamp and it looks like you have a much easier way. So thanks again for the information!! Cheers from Montana!! Lets go ride!!
Excellent Video! I accidentally discovered a very similar method after getting very frustrated with my new Zumo and the challenges with Basecamp & Explore. I do like explore better as the route is pushed out through wireless as long as your Zomo is powered up. No need to connect to the PC and go into file transfer mode! - Thank You!
Greg: excellent - I went on a ride in the mountains a week ago with my Zumo XT. I rode about 40 miles on dirt, gravel, and paved roads. After the ride, decided I would like to take all of the unsaved tracks, somehow attach them all together and bring them back into Google Maps to share with a friend. I'm afraid to loose the data in the GPS, have no idea how to do this. I could try saving the individual tracks which I think is a starting point, but don't know where to go next. I have basecamp installed on my computer.
Thank you Greg, perfect perfect perfect! Finally i can stop tearing my hair out and maybe start to like my BMW Nav VI.... Base Camp has been frustrating me, so had resorted to plugging in routes with very approximate waypoints manually, on the device in Trip Planner.... very slow and tedious, and then whilst riding, wondering why it wasn't taking me the way i wanted. Now i understand (the re-routing thing). Will be giving it a go later today. Thank you again!
Hey Greg, excellent tutorial & I agree with Kyms comment, defo not a crude video! I even learnt a few things I didn't know about with my Garmin Zumo 345, thanks mate - topman.
Really great video. Glad some one took the time to research this and figure it out. Built a couple of maps, we'll if the download process works on my 450. Fingers crossed.
This gets ten thumbs up!!! Should have been my first video. This definitely was my last. Told me all I needed to know. Took me a long bit to find this one. Thanks for your help. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 I have the 396 zumo
thankks so much. I have the same Garmin my kids bought for me in 04?05? Somewhere in there anyway, so it is seriously the worse for wear. Button covers missing that I can’t replace and so on. It helped me on my 03 RoadGlide till I swapped it (along with a bunch of money, of course) for our current TRIGLIDE ULTRA. It still sits on my handle bar and helps me with speed, fuel and so on. The Ultra has the HD nav suites on board along with their ride planner. It’s OK, but no Garmin. Thinking about getting the Zumo XT but don’t know how to move routes from HD to Garmin. Still researching……..
Hi Greg, great video, very helpfull, thanks for sharing. What if you add some POI's points of interest to your route and you want them to display on your GPS' screen when you navigating? Once embedded to your route, how do you export them from Basecamp to you Garmin GPS. Many thanks Pedro
firstly, great video, it's thorough and concise, thank you. However, the main thing that strikes me is how many stages one has to go through just to get a decent route on their sat nav! I agree that Google maps has the best mapping and is the easiest to drag and customise your route but all the other steps shouldn't be necessary really, I'm just shocked at how bad the TomTom and Garmin own brand mapping is....I've been looking into Sat Nav's for some time and the TomTom / Garmin / Beeline / iPhone maps all have pros and cons. I just wish the whole "Sat Nav" thing was easier to use! I think Gamin should be ashamed of themselves for making paying customers go through so many steps as should in your video!
Very useful video, Basecamp feels outdated and clunky when trying to plot routes. I tried to do the Google maps thing recently and couldn't figure out how to use the "footsteps" route. 👍
Hi Glen, great instructional! I get the tracks imported into Basecamp but when I create a route I get a straight line from start point to end point.????
Thank you for the very clear info, however I could not upload my created route on my Garmin Zumo 590lm since I got a message memory was full. Is there any way of cleaning the internal memory and opening space for my new route?
I followed your instructions. I try to transfer the google map to basecamp The google map track I created populates in basecamp but when I go to the "create route" step in basecamp the route created is not a copy of the track it is a direct route from the starting point to the end point. What could the issue be? Are there some other settings I need to change? Thanks
I know you have the Garmin Zumo GPS, anyone out there with a Tomtomrider 550 who does the same ? I use google maps but can't get it on my tomtomrider 550 . So How to use Google Maps to create routes on your TomTomRider (550) ? very useful video , thank you. It helps to get the basics :)
This is a great video. I got it to work out about 90%. I got the same issue as the post with the straight line as a route when I tried the process on my MacBook Pro. Everything worked as the video when I tried it on a Windows machine except when I got the file to the Zumo 350lm. Unit asked me did I want to download a new trip. Selected Yes. Started calculating and the five seconds later a message that it was unable to import. 😕
Not sure what happened, I created a route, with lots of turns. I exported the kmz file. Imported it into my collection as you said. Then created the route. But when I created the route, it just made a straight line from start to ending point, left out all my custom turns. What's up with that?
Hello Mr. Miller, I've watched your video multiple times now to make sure I haven't missed a step, but I still keep coming up with the same problem. I've created 12 Maps in My Maps (one for each day of a motorcycle trip next month) each with some waypoints for stops along the way. I've downloaded Garmin's Basecamp onto my iMac and downloaded the .kmz file with no issue, however, when I try to convert the track to a route the only thing that comes up is a straight line. I've uninstalled Basecamp, I've redone one of the maps to test, I've tried everything I can figure to no avail. Have you run across this problem, or do you have any thoughts? I have searched this problem for hours and just about to give up and use my phone's gps, which I really do not want to do. Any ideas my friend?
@@Moto_DC Nope - I abandoned the Garmin and bought a TomTom and used their My Drive App with no issues. I imported each of the 12 maps into My Drive and they each came in with no issues. Took 5 minutes - TomTom has a feature that asks if you want the map to automatically import via wifi to the portable unit - I clicked yes and I was done.
@@WallaceRFluhr ah fair enough. I figured it out. It was because the device hadn't fully synced and so basecamp had no installed maps so it just draws a straight line. You must either buy maps to install into basecamp or just upload them from the zumo. Works great once done. Thanks for the reply and happy trails 👍
It will show just a straight line if your gps isn't connected to your computer, and also displays a line while processing, but it will disappear once the conversion is complete.
Excellent video, just be sure to send the completed "Route" from BaseCamp to the Garmin's "Internal Storage" rather than the "SD Card", my 395LM can only import the "Route" from "Internal Storage". Thanks!!
Thanks Greg. I watch this video at least two times a year, every time I plan a trip, I use this for my refresher course.
Finally someone who actually explained the process!!! Thank you soooo much!
I realize that this is an older video. However, you showed all of the steps and I now see how to make this work with my Zumo 396 GPS. Thank You
My dad gift me a Garmin Zumo because he told me is better to have a GPS than to only have a cell phone when riding a motorbike. Thanks for the information, it was very useful to me!

Is Basecamp still relevant for Zumo XT..?.I've got Garmin Explore, and Garmin Drive. Confusing to me. Why all the apps??
This is a great instructional video. Thanks a lot.
Thank you so much! Now I know how to use my Zumo 550.
thankks so much.
You sir have made my year!
Thank you.
Awesome video. I will share w the HOG Ride Captains. I want to plan routes on my RG w Zumo 396.
Awesome video, thank you so much!!!
GREAT video!! Thanks!!
firstly, great video, it's thorough and concise, thank you.
Thanks for the tips. It was very helpfull even though I've already a bit of expierence on using similar recources.
i ha this same problem on a trip that i had put into my Garmin, it really sucked. so i will give this a shot. yours Kevin
Exactly what I was looking for in route planning thank you!
Very useful how-to. 👍
This was great. I couldn't figure this out the otherday even though I knew they could work together. Thanks!
Thank you so much, explained so well and it works perfect
Very useful video, Basecamp feels outdated and clunky when trying to plot routes. I tried to do the Google maps thing recently and couldn't figure out how to use the "footsteps" route. 👍
Hi Glen, great instructional! I get the tracks imported into Basecamp but when I create a route I get a straight line from start point to end point.????
Great Video! Great Tutorial. Thanks!
Yes thank you for this, works like a charm!!!!
Thanks Greg, I am a Garmin User for a long time. But I didn't know (and tryed) that you can load a kml file too.
Great information thanks Greg
This is a great video. I got it to work out about 90%. I got the same issue as the post with the straight line as a route when I tried the process on my MacBook Pro. Everything worked as the video when I tried it on a Windows machine except when I got the file to the Zumo 350lm. Unit asked me did I want to download a new trip. Selected Yes. Started calculating and the five seconds later a message that it was unable to import. 😕
Excellent!!!!! Thanks
Thank you very interesting ✌
Not sure what happened, I created a route, with lots of turns. I exported the kmz file. Imported it into my collection as you said. Then created the route. But when I created the route, it just made a straight line from start to ending point, left out all my custom turns. What's up with that?
I get exactly the same issue. Did you figure it out?
Thanks much, very helpful!
thanks mate, love it
Hi. I,m trying to do this and when I create the route, ir creates a straight path from the start point till the destination. Thanks for your help.
I have exactly the same problem. did you figure it out?
Great Video GOOD JOB
can you do the same thing for a hiking route where theres no trail in the map ?,, thanks watching from costa Rica
Awesome, sir, thank you!!
Excellent video, just be sure to send the completed "Route" from BaseCamp to the Garmin's "Internal Storage" rather than the "SD Card", my 395LM can only import the "Route" from "Internal Storage". Thanks!!
