I think this is one of their best songs. So relatable and entrancing. It is about growing up in the suburbs of Toronto, detached from the life of the city and isolated by the industrial society which includes a school system designed to mold you into a efficient worker and consumer, losing the race to rats, caught in ticking traps, dreaming of a better life.

They were influenced by Ayn Rand so a bit of Libertarianism made it into their songs. Songs stressing individualism and being self sufficient and songs railing against collectivism. Tom Sawyer and Trees come to mind.

This song gives me chills sometimes. There's actual beautiful melodies, unique rhyme schemes, great drum fills, and the haunting theme of adolescent lonliness - either occasional or a daily dread. A complete song. I'll always remember once catching a homely, quiet female HS classmate studying something with her eyes. She was looking up and down with just a hopeless lonely look on her face. She was studying a group of 'popular' girls, with all their makeup, fashion and friendship. I've never forgetten that look on her face to this day - 40+ years later.

This song is about youth growing up in the suburbs and how they're forced to conform under the guise of peer pressure and how things are handed down to some of the rich kids and how they're parents sometimes want to relive their dreams vicariously through their children by trying to shape them to be like them and grow up and do the same things and/or go to the same schools. It's their parents view of what they think their children's lives should be instead of giving them more freedom to be who they want to be like the lyrics where he says:
"Growing up it all seems so one-sided
    Opinions all provided
    The future pre-decided
Attached and subdivided in the mass production zone
No where is the dreamer or the misfit so alone"
In that last lyric it means that if you think differently and/or want to go down your own path in life instead of what is considered to be normal or outside the box your considered a misfit.

    And the far unlit unknown
Growing up it all seems so one-sided
    Opinions all provided
    The future pre-decided
    Detached and subdivided

    Nowhere is the dreamer
    Or the misfit so alone
    Subdivisions -
    In the high school halls

    The unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe
    The restless dreams of youth
Drawn like moths we drift into the city
    The timeless old attraction
    Cruising for the action
    Lit up like a firefly
Just to feel the living night
Some will sell their dreams for small desires
Or lose the race to rats

City Kid, Suburb Kid, Ghetto Kid, Country Kid....doesn't matter. The social "clicks" and subdivisions of classes, people, ideals, expectations from parents and relatives, etc. affect us all. The "dreamers, the misfits so alone". The ones who won't or will not conform to what so-called society dictates to us as the "norm". To quote another Rush lyric from 'Vital Signs'...."everybody got to deviate from the norm"...

Great reaction guys! I'm a tad surprised you didn't directly pick up on the lyrical content dealing with conformity, societal pressures to 'fit in' & the difficulties for the individual free-thinkers, especially as teenagers, to find a place, then the struggles of the rat-race as one gets older. Honestly, this one is pretty 'on the nose' lyrically for Neil. I get he's pretty cryptic sometimes & requires interpretation, but this one, at least for me, I got immediately! Course I was the target audience - nerdy loner, never part of the cool crowd - this song resonated on first listen.
May also be due to hearing it thousands of times (no exaggeration) - it is my de facto #1 Rush song, followed closely by 2112. I get chills every time I hear that opening synth drone! Perfection!

It's literally a song about living in the suburbs, (like in a subdivision). The word subdivision serves as a double-entente, explaining how suburban life allows us to separate from each other, leading to mistrust and singling out those who don't conform. Think of the old man yelling "get off my lawn", or the "nerd" who sits alone in the cafeteria. We head to the city for excitement, but as we get older, we decide to settle down to a place like that in which we grew up, back to the suburbs.

The members of Rush were basically outcasts in school, growing up in Toronto in the 1960's... Geddy Lee (bass/ keyboards/ vocals) and Alex Lifeson (guitar) were both children of immigrants in Canada; Geddy was Jewish... So, they both would have bullies threatening violence against them after school... Neither fit in w/ the 'popular crowd' and neither wanted to grow up to do a 9-to-5 job... In fact, Geddy and Alex both quit school before graduation to focus on Rush and their music, which upset their parents back then...
Neil Peart (drums) who wrote the lyrics had the same problems growing up - he was tall, awkward and shy... not athletic or into sports ...and a bookworm, so he would get picked on a lot in school... He started playing drums as a kid and it was the first time he was ever admired for anything, so it was an instrument of self-esteem... He also started playing in bands and even went to England to be a professional musician, but was unable to make a living there. Peart returned to Canada and worked at his dad's parts shop when he got a call to audition for Rush in 1974... He joined the band and felt like he had found his place - Peart was kindred spirits w/ Geddy & Alex and liked them and their management right away... On tour, he was always reading books... and Geddy & Alex felt that he would be a better lyricist for Rush... It turned out that they were right... 'Subdivisions' was written in 1982 as Neil Peart was looking back at his youth experiences, being an outcast in society w/ dreams of being something that was not the traditional adult life.

You are absolutely correct that Rush is definitely more cerebral than a lot of it out there. If you really want to "get it " with Rush, I suggest having the lyrics pulled up on your phone or something. Geddy Lee (Lead guitar, keyboard, lead vocals) has a voice that is kinda hard to follow when you are first getting to know the group. They put out a lot of sound for only being a 3 man band eh? Geddy had a special setup where he could press pedals with his feet to play keyboard while he played lead guitar and sang (talk about multitasking). The drummer Neil Peart (RIP) was on a whole new plane compared to others at the time. He wrote the majority of their music and could play percussion like nobody I have seen before or since. Just do a quick search for him on here. There's a video of him doing a drum solo and his percussion kit is amazing... literally surrounded by drums, cymbals, cowbell, pipes, all sorts of stuff and he is amazing

My impression has always been that they are describing the sheltered suburban youth, who has to live in their insulated world, subdivided from what they might really want: living in a vibrant city, exploring life outside the confines of their social circle. By feeling that way, they are outcasts and alone even in their own families.

Rush music is 80's, different from 70's music, you can already see more commercialism in the music, I like that too, about the lyrics, I think they sang about strumming in private schools, where upbringing, discipline, relationships were the main problem of schoolchildren in adolescence, on my opinion is relevant to this day, Geddy Lee clearly pronounces the text, in rhyme with the music, this only complements the song, which makes his vocals and the Rush team as a whole fly, drums, synthesizer, guitar and vocals, they seem to compete with each other who is better , all the time trying to get ahead, I like it, I think this song is in the top 10 best songs of Rush.

"Be cool or be cast out!" This came out when I was in high school. I just thought it all related to being a teenager in the suburbs. High school halls, shopping malls, backs of cars, etc.

You should check out the video. It’s the studio version. The video illustrates what it’s about. I was a young teen when it came out. Ultimate teen age “let me be free” song. All over the radio & still a radio favorite.

You definitely have to read the lyrics to this. It's deep. It says you life is pre decided according to the way society wants it.

The greatest trio of one group in history. Sadly Alex Leifson is a master on the guitar, but he is playing with two guys who some say are the greatest at their instrument in history.
Listen to La Villa Strangiato next to hear the guitarist blow your brain.

These were some of Peart's most direct lyrics. It's about growing up in suburbia, the sterility of it, and the lack of imagination of many of the kids who grow up there. It's not a place for those who think differently. Conformity was (is) considered the rule. Suburban cities are often divided into subdivision housing, with cookie cutter homes. When they were growing up outside of Toronto, they all lived in one of these suburbs, and experienced that sense of isolation. Watch the original video that they made for it. It will give you the real sense of the song.

Yeah, Rush's lyrics have definitely questioned my intelligence at times, but their songs and their instrumentation are so intricate, how can their lyrics not be? It's part of what makes Rush, Rush.

You may find Red Sector A by Rush from the Grace Under Pressure album interesting. It was partly inspired by Geddy Lee's mom's 1st person account of life in a Jewish concentration camp during WWII.Lee's mom survived that ordeal.

ROFLMAO, nailed it. if you ain't got no smarts then Rush is not your band. Rush is definitely "thinking mans rock". The official video focuses on kids growing up in the suburbs but it's so much deeper than that addressing all subdivisions in society.
not sure what all Rush songs you've reacted to but one of my favorites that doesn't get enough attention is "The Trees" check it out.

To me this song has always represented coming of age. Trying to figure out where you stand in society and whether to conform to societies standards or whether to rebel. It's much like "School" from Supertramp, or "Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2" by Pink Floyd.

subdivisions: living in the cookie-cutter zone between downtown and 'the sticks', and the pressures of the cliques that often take hold there - no room for those different, dreamers, in this 'mass production zone' - mass production of goods, but especially personalities and culture. The larger message would be applicable to the subdivisions created in society at large, and I'm sure Neil/Geddy/Alex had that in mind as well.

  • @mjdillaha

The Lyrics of Rush are predominately written by Neil Peart "The Professor". The lyrics are NEVER abstract. The lyrics are Specific, Deliberate, and intended to inspire reflection on predetermined social expectations and social norms. Critical thinking mans' Music and Lyrics. Neil Pearts social commentary from his observations inspired by the huge volume of books that he had read.
