Rush is a throwback to when listening to music was an event. You needed a record player which took up room that was in a specific part of the house. It wasn’t background noise on your phone. You sat down and listened to it. You studied it. Music was there for a reason, not to just pass the time while you texted friends.
Happy Canada Day to everyone in the basement bars, and in the backs of cars
Can we talk about Geddy Lee playing keyboards, bass, and SINGING all at the same time? Amazing.
For a band whose words and music always tied together seamlessly and brilliantly, this song really rises to the top of of their catalog. It really captured not only their backstory, but the particular sentiment about suburbia that pervaded at that time.
I think you’re right In saying “pervaded at that time” and I’m wondering why that sentiment is anachronistic now?
It’s an entirely different world now-everything is opposite and backwards in the most opposing way possible to a extreme degree. If that was so bad back then, imagine how that society would view the norm of today?😢Crazy times people🤘🖖✌️🎹🥁🎸🎤🥇🇨🇦🎼👌🤙
@@ZIG4ZAG20 The middle class that populated suburbia back doesn’t exist to the extent it did back then. Now it’s the haves and the have nots to the extreme. It was a trip watching it all transpire gradually over the decades. It’s a crying shame. Only now do people look around, finally seeing it now that the veneer has all been torn away.

In the city where I live, the suburbs (even the affluent ones) have a lot of gang activity and drug dealing, with the occasional shooting. "Suburbia" no longer exists.
It took about 14 years of trickle-down economic policy to destroy the massive middle class that populated the suburbs and now massive transfers of wealth are so common no one even pays attention.
Rush is a band of equals. Everyone goes all out and everyone contributes to the excellence of the song. This is one of my favs.
My personal favorite Rush song.
I liked too much of your answer. Almost everyone only gives aplause to neil and geddie and forgot the great alex. I belived that. A band of equals makes the song of rush brilliant
Only Queen and Led Zeppelin are a band of equals like RUSH. You can't replace a member without fundamentally altering the band.
'Subdivisions' is MY Rush song! This is the song that made me a Rush fan for LIFE! A true MASTERPIECE!!
The reason Rush stands out from ALL other bands, is simple, they don't have 3 musicians like this!
How can I explain the original sensation and exhiliration in the 1980s when my older brother first put this vinyl album Signals on the player and this first song Subdivisions came on? I was just starting out as a freshman in high school ... a private school in suburbia no less, with dress codes and other restrictions but the cliques, social and economic class divides were strong as ever. I was also just starting my journey as a drummer because it was such a wild deviation from everyday life in that context.
So just imagine how jaw dropping this was for a 14 year old awkward kid fumbling through the social barriers and stigmas of suburban high school? My brother had already absorbed this years before so he walked me through the poetic lyrics of these songs in the album sleeve, crystallizing the very experiences I was just starting to be surrounded with ... and then, honest to God I thought WAIT... you can do THAT with music???? It just didn't seem "allowed" ... but the end result I felt this was some serious buried treasure. Like you say in your reaction, the way that this band put together so many musical elements and bring them all up front, but not in a cluttered or chaotic way. They always keep it organized and energetic... and so their music had this Value-Add... I really felt like this was a gift compared to the other rock music I had grown up with at that point. From the get go, if you're open and sensitive enough, you will always sense the extra amount of effort and heart and mind they put into their music. Even if the genre is not your specific cup of tea, you can't help but be won over by the overall atmosphere they construct in every single song.
Thank you for that awesome description of how this music influenced you!
👍👍👍!!!
I was always amazed at the sound these guys got out of just three musicians
The older I get the more I realize just what an accomplished and profound lyricist Neil Peart was. This song is a prime example of that
The time changes, Geddy's voice, the drumming, Alex' playing and the message are off the charts! My favorite.♥️👍🎸🥁🎧
There are a lot of great bands; Led Zeppelin, The Who, Tool, Yes… but Rush is best of them all.
they are so so tight together it's incredibly insane.. These guys are the best. their musicianship is bar none.. Enjoy your RUSH journey...
Yes, yes, yes! This is absolutely one of my all time favourite songs. From the lyrics, to Geddy’s vocals to the instrumentation, this song just grabs my attention each every time I hear it.
What makes the bass unique for Rush is the fact it isn't just a filler that shadows the guitar. Bass has it's own melody.
That face you made when the bass came in was priceless
Thank you for reacting to Rush on Canada Day! The reason the three of them work so well together is not only their masterful musicianship but their deep friendship and respect they have for each other. They split all the proceeds from their work equally no matter who wrote the song. Any decisions they made as a band had to unanimous. Alex and Geddy have been friends since they met in junior high when they were 13. When Neil joined the band it was like the missing piece had been found. Other song suggestions
Natural Science from the Molson Amphitheatre Toronto
Caravan from the Time Machine Tour
Cut to the Chase
Stick it out
Cheers
For those of us that lived this era in and around Toronto, this video is pure nostalgia.
"I feel like the bass is just as good..." That's because it is. RUSH = 3 Gods on their instruments.
I don't think there is any other song that triggers memories of my high school years like this one does. The lyrics resonated with me and my friends so heavily when it was released. I was lucky enough to see Rush twice on the Signals tour. Once with my friends, in which our minds were chemically enhanced and we were in the front row, and again 4 days later completely sober. As great as that was, the line that really floods me with nostalgia these days is "somewhere out of a memory, of lighted streets on quite nights". Driving around quite neighborhoods with friends, listening to Rush, Zeppelin and Floyd, usually with a little herb to give the music a little added depth. Some of the best memories of my life, and everytime I hear this song it conjures them in my mind like it was yesterday.
I can relate. In 1982/83 I was 16 /17
@@patcandelora8496 Same, Class of 84.
@@douggetchess4732 yup me too
Neil is right there punctuating and accenting his lyrics, his drums hammering home key syllables that Geddy sings. So cool to be able to do that with the words he wrote. It’s definitely a cognizant choice found throughout the Rush catalog. So, yeah, Geddy’s pronunciation and unique soprano voice, but the drums accenting certain words are also a part of why the pronunciation in certain places really pops. All this while navigating all the odd time signatures in 7, but also the up-shift to a 6/4 chorus which is super creative because it fits the song so perfectly. Cast (5) Out (6) Lol.
Neal Peart’s drumming on this is killer !! 👍👍🎶🎶🥁🥁🥁🎸🎹
My ALL TIME FAVORITE! This is every outsider’s experience in high school!
Each one plays for the song, the story as a whole. Their musicianship, abilities are able to make things incredible while always focusing on the whole. Amazing chemistry on all levels.
I've heard this song hundreds if not thousands of times and I've never tired of it. The soundtrack of my youth. So great to see the younger generation appreciating this wondrous music.
The subdivision scenes were filmed in the Toronto suburb of Scarborough, and the highschool scenes were filmed at L'Amoreaux Collegiate Institute (my cousin Richard attended the school during filming).
To emphasize the bleakness of suburban living in the 1980's, Scarborough was often refered to as Scarberia, as in Siberia.
And of course the iconic Don Valley Parking Lot.
Makes me want to get me a Scarborough suitcase and celebrate Canada Day! Cheers, eh!

This song really shines on a turntable,,,especially the attack on the cymbals...
Seems pointless to mention Neil's drum work since he's always great but I always especially loved his work on this track. Every hit is so tight and on point.
This song is probably my favorite. The Trees would be up there also. Neil's lyrics were so deep. RIP Professor
Always felt that Geddy produced a new position for musicians….
The lead bass player…
Always amazed me how he could lead a song with such incredible bass lines
It was Chris Squire of Yes, who was a big inspiration to Geddy, that was the first one to be described as a lead bass player.
You were Close to the Edge though.
Actually, that title belongs to John Entwistle of The Who, one of Geddy's main influences, along with Chris Squire of Yes.
And play keyboards while plying pedal. I can hardly walk and chew gum
Another uniquely powerful tune among a massive catalog of so many brilliant songs from a band which occupies with only a few others a place on that lofty balcony of truly great, influential and iconic bands.
I think my favorite RUSH song. Great reaction.
Rush should be your number one band from now to eternity
Another great fusion of music and lyrics by Rush is Witch Hunt ...a song about prejudice.
Witch Hunt could be the Republican Party campaign song at this point. "Ignorance and prejudice and fear walk hand in hand"...#RacistCult
My favorite Rush song ever! There is no other rock song that better describes the alienation of the American teenager. Masterpiece
One of their best intro ever
Top 3 in the Rush catalog for all time.
Favorite here too!🤘
Think about it.. 3 of them! Sounds like a bloody orchestra up there! Multi-tasking at its finest! WOW......
This song is the #1 reason why I was so good at playing Tempest. Awesome game!
The guitar, the bass, the drums, the keyboards... Rush was always about being able to do all those things at once and do them incredibly well. The certainly liked to challenge themselves.
I will never get tied of your Rush reactions. Always some great insights
Great feedback/reaction! Love this song/video.... Neil's lyrical genius captured exactly what it was like back then to be a teenager living a hum drum existence in the suburbs of Canada... The message applies to all walks of life caught up in the "rat race" of society's ticking traps....🤗✌️🔥👍
What you have with Rush is three grand masters of their instruments which is why they have an incredible sound.
I'll tell you, this song resonates with me. It is a description of my entire childhood 🤦🏻♂️ I grew up in this time period, too, so no surprise it is one of my favorite songs ❤️
I love Subdivisions. So glad I got to grow up with every new Rush album and seeing them in concert.[ Time stands still ]is a good one to hear. RIP Neil
1982 The year I graduated high school, loved this song then and love it now!
When I was at a summer camp at 13 years old, I heard their album Grace Under Pressure, and thought “whoa that’s really cool.” As soon as I got home, I went out and bought Signals. Upon hearing Subdivisions, they became my favorite band, and that hasn’t changed in 40 years.
All filmed in and around Toronto Canada
Got this album in 1981 when I was 16 as a birthday gift from a friend basically the same age as the kids in the video.
"the bass is just as good!"
Geddy Lee is the best bassist of all time and he's always prominently featured in the mix. Another reason Rush is the best band of all time
Geddy stands on the shoulders of Chris Squire, the same way Alex was heavily influenced by Page. Geddy is an amazing bassist, and also a great vocalist and keyboardist.
SalvoG, you totally get it! Your commentary is bang-on!!! You understand this is a masterpiece and how there is no dominant instrument....all 3 are amazing at putting such high level musicianship together in an unprecedented way. They are original creative as hell!!!! Ridiculous these 3 guys came together and did what they did. Cheers!
Subdivisions is a legendary song. Without a doubt, one of the best songs from Rush. So happy you reacted to it. Can’t wait to see what song you react to next😁.
I remember when this 'Signals' album dropped - The general consensus at the time was; 'I can hear Geddy, but where is the rest of the band?"
It took some getting used too (in my case decades in all honesty), but now I can really enjoy their last collaboration with Terry Brown.
I only really liked Analog Kid, Loosing It, and Countdown due to my interest in the Space Shuttle when the album first came out, but those still took a bit to grow on me (Analog Kid and Loosing It are still my two favorites for the mood/emotion they evoke). Through listening to those more I came to grow and like the album more and more over time...I should add I do really like this song now and it is one of my favorites. I have a LOT of "favorite" Rush songs...🙂
Love this Era of Rush, was my high-school days, but I love most Rush regardless of the Era, they were just freaking awesome.
Never get old? It is relevant to every teenager who is not the jock, the cheerleader the happening, popular kid.
I saw Rush on the Signals tour (still have the shirt 🙂). I so identified with this song. If I could go back and advise my younger self, I'd say, "What you think matters, doesn't."
This brought me back to my HIGH SCHOOL.
The truest words you spoke: "This is timeless"
Great reaction SalvoG! Hey, please listen to the next song on the Signals album, after Subdivisions. The song is called "Analog Kid"! It's incredible! A great song!
Analog Kid is definitely... You move me, you move me...
Analog Kid might be my favorite Rush song!
I am glad you are enjoying the lyrics as well as the rest of us. One great story on the same record is Analog Kid. Check it out.
They also wrote a song regarding the Space Shuttle.
"this is timeless"
Great song and reaction. The bass and drums, wow, the way Neal rides the cymbal sounds so good. Alex’ s solo is good too. I remember an interview that Alex did , he said the solo was influenced by The Edge from U2 which he was listening to at the time.
At least the poor kid in the video didn't have social media back then to REALLY fuck with his mind.
They are perfection.
A perfect song !
Great bass on this as always , great mix of Synths and drive as well. What a groove
This song spoke to me in high school like no other
Soundtrack of our lives how lucky we were
The symbol work in this song is crazy good!!!!!
Gods, they are simply Gods, musically, lyrically, intellectually and spiritually.
why have you not heard "La Villa Strangiato" from the Hemispheres album by Rush. Its a 4 song album! Im my opinion their deepest, hardest album. Ok Im pushing a bit. But give it a listen. They consider it their hardestsong to record. The live version of this song is also something to behold.
This was the song that really started my 40+ year love affair with this band! The video, actually. It played on MTV, not often, but occasionally
Might be my favorite Rush song.
Credit Rush's production team with the consistently great mix album to album.
Neil Peart had written somewhere, that this song in particular captured that alienation and angst that he experienced himself in school. Not fitting in, being a part of any special crowd of peers. Subdivisions, is just that. The homes, high school halls and shopping malls have there own distinctive notch , showing the misfit loner keeping to himself magnifies this point.
Folks if this song does not get your heart going... well... run for the AED and NOW!!!
the craziest thing about this video is the 401 wasnt bumper to bumper
Yes that song will ALWAYS be cool
love this song
Flawless
Good reaction....thanks for whatever you did to the sound level...it sounded great at full headphone volume.
Top 10 favorite rush songs for me Love it Love you
🤗 I wore this 45' out! 😁🐰
I look forward to going down the Kansas rabbit hole with you when you get around to it. They're another one of those bands that rule a corner of music history.
You've got to see some of the sheet music to truly appreciate the complicated time changes in their music...
The funny thing about this song, is that it is indeed this briliant, timeless song, but it simultaneously reminds me of a lot of other (lesser) Canadian pop of the era (Glass Tiger, Honeymoon Suite, Platinum Blonde, Loverboy, etc -- before fellow Canadians laugh I mean each's harder, earlier, less hair rock, works), so for me it always has this 80s pop feel to it while transcending it. And it does make me think specifically of Canadian pop music of the era, vs British or American, which makes me think perhaps Canadian 80s pop was more distinctive in some ways, a sort of melding of US rock and British new wave (at least for a couple years), than I realized while living through it.
I'm a huge fan of The Who and to me Subdivisions summarizes in one song the message of the entire Quadrophenia album by The Who. The song "Cut My Hair" on Quadrophenia has same brutal concept of be cool or be cast out. "Why should I care if I have to cut my hair? I've got to move with the fashion.....or be outcast...."
They’re not enough adjectives to describe how much I love this band and happy Canada Day
If you love the synthesizer, you should check out RUSH's "Vital Signs". 🔥
Definitely one of my favorites. Love the lyrical meaning. So many people can relate.
Such a nostalgic video
Hey man I growed up listen to rush I'm 60 years old but I'm telling you you listen to that whole album digitals and you will freak out but yeah that's on there is timeless but that's one of the greatest bands there was and they didn't make it popular till subdivisions come out it is awesome and but you have a way with music and you killed it on this video
Rush are unique to everyone else they had different eras because they were ALWAYS trying to find the best Rush. Some like the synth era some don't count me as a huge fan of the synth era along with the rest of their catalog. This album is great and so much different from Moving Pictures before it. I think Power Windows is where they really nailed the synth era and it's my favorite album from that period.
I'd like to see your reaction to New World Man and Roll The Bones. Two phenomenal Rush tunes.
I’d swear it’s a Yes song with Geddy on vocals.
Gen X here. This song perfectly describes my teenage years.
That was my life. The video game was Tempest. I was a master.
This is a gem 💎
This song reminds me of my high school years the good & the bad and the Signals album released right about the same time.
GREAT REACTION
Good review!! I miss that game "Tempest" shown in the video too.
