Literally lying in a tent 10 mins outside of Bobcaygeon listening to The Hip. Glad you enjoyed them good sir! " It was in Bobcaygeon, where I saw the constellations". A great Canadian band. Fitting that Gord was an outspoken critic of the Indigenous residential school systems that all Canadians are coming to grips with.
I'm a 66 year old grandfather of two boys, living in Canada for the last 31 years. I have had quite a few near misses in my life and I regard myself as fairly emotionally resilient. Today is the first time I've been able to listen to the Hip since Gord died. I found myself sobbing for the last hour as I've revisited some of my favourite Hip tracks. I hope I can get through the tears. I missed their music so much.
Canadians hold the hip in the highest regards , we are proud of them and to be honest this is something Americans couldn’t understand , Gord is Canadian and he is ours ….. this isn’t just music , its what Canada is, I for one am happy the Hip didn’t gain much traction in the States , it’s wrong but I feel most Canadians want to keep them all to ourselves, but with that being said I’m glad you appreciated the Hip..
I left a Hip disc with a SouthWest airlines stewardess along with my email. Eventually got an email saying thank you, the picture was of a stack of vinyl and it was all Hip. Happy she caught the words too
This is the soundtrack to every Canadian's soul. The bush parties, nights at the cottage the deck parties, everything. Keep listening. Check out more Hip. Grace Too is the next song to review!
Holy shit!!!! Never thought I'd see my all time favorite Canadian band on here. I'm from Canada(Winnipeg) and can speak for all Canadians that these guys are God's up north. RIP Gordie
I still remember seeing them at the old arena near Polo Park and at the Downs. The Hip are a deep and beautiful part of Canada's soul. Never as happy as I am rocking out to the Hip with friends.
You get an extra comment for the Hip, was so crazy that they could sell out any stadium in Canada for a week straight but couldn't pull 10,000 in the US. Probably the biggest and best Canadian band ever. 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
@Nunia Bidnez - I saw The Hip in December 2009 in Manchester (UK) at The Academy 3 which holds about 300 and has a stage about 2 feet high. It was like seeing someone like U2 in your local pub. They were a class act and I stood right in front of Gord for most of the evening. My Canadian buddy was sooooo jealous!
Gord was even better live. He would go off on rants during the songs. I went to his last concert in Edmonton before he passed away... it was amazing. Canada's favorite band at least it was mine. They have lots of great ones. I am glad you liked it. I will be checking out more of your content in the future. Thanks for giving so much love to my Canadian brothers!!!
"New Orleans is Sinking" was pretty much the Hip's first big hit. They just kept getting better with age and experience. While Rush is better known outside of Canada, The Tragically Hip are even more beloved within Canada itself (and Rush is a national treasure). Gordie and the boys are iconic.
“Nautical Disaster” is a tear jerker for me: “I had this dream where I relished the fray And the screamin' filled my head all day It was as though I'd been spit here Settled in, into the pocket Of a lighthouse on some rocky socket Off the coast of France, dear One afternoon, four thousand men died in the water here And five hundred more were thrashing madly As parasites might in your blood Now I was in a lifeboat designed for ten, ten only Anything that systematic would get you hated It's not a deal nor a test nor a love of something fated (death) The selection was quick, the crew was picked in order And those left in the water Got kicked off our pant leg And we headed for home Then the dream ends when the phone rings "You doing all right?" He said, "It's out there most days and nights But only a fool would complain" Anyway, Susan, if you like Our conversation is as faint a sound in my memory As those fingernails scratching on my hull” Triggers the old PTSD
I can rock out to them, but I’m still not past the point of listening to The Hip without crying at some point. Their songs, along with Blue Rodeo were huge parts of my adulthood. I can recall a memory associated with many Hip songs. Gord, we miss you.
Same…watching the final concert on TV was like attending an Irish wake for Gordie. We were saying goodbye to him. It was my generation’s “where were you when the last concert was on TV?” moments. I bawled my face off…and most of their songs tug at my heart. We are so blessed to have so much of their music.

the "place of honor that Mr. Downie occupied in Canada's national imagination has no parallel in the United States. Imagine Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Michael Stipe combined into one sensitive, oblique poet-philosopher and you're getting close." - The New York Times on the passing of Gord Downie.
It still is sinking. And everyone in NOLA knows a Hurricane can wipe em' off the map- why do you think the big drink is called a Hurricane?! So spare us.
The Tragically Hip didn't need to travel out of the country. We supported them all the way. Buying their albums, songs hitting the charts, sold out tours, the last concert was televised and pretty much shut down the country. It amazes me that the United States never heard of them. Thank you for listening.
This is so pure, I love it. First time I saw The Hip perform this song live, a flash downpour hit the outdoor venue and we got soaked. It was the best experience I ever had live.

38 Year Old would be a great next track. It's pretty accessible. A lot of the references in their lyrics are so Canadian that Americans don't get them.
Welcome to "The Hip" as they are affectionately referred to by us Canadians. There is a huge catalogue of hits to go through... some gritty rockers, some deep soul numbers that pull at your heart... and so many that mix it together. Special was also the fact that it was the same friends in the band from day to this day (minus Gord who passed away).
Check out their first five albums in order starting with this album: Up To Here. Each album takes a few listens before you get it but when you do...:look out. One of the greats.
Absolutely a National Treasure- when Gord Downie announced he had cancer, the country was devastated. If you have it available to you, highly recommend watching the documentary “LONG TIME RUNNING” the effects of his words on this tour still echo throughout Canada
Canada still mourns. It’s a good life even when you do weaken. It’s about the native indigenous kids all over this country that never made it home. That was his message in death. Rest In Peace Gord.
I was in Hong Kong when I found out. It was VICTORIA Day weekend but Tuesday morning my first few days first time in Asia, and out of habit I went to the hotel computers to check the news from home, and I went to the Toronto Star front page and this big blunt headline had the news and I gasped and nearly fell off my chair ‘Tragically Hip Singer Diagnosed With Terminal Brain Cancer’
I can't listen to The Hip anymore. It brings back powerful memories of being young; wild; free; good friends, and a time when the world was a better, simpler place , now all gone, is just too much for me to process.
Start with this album, Up To Here then work your way up. Each album takes 4 or 5 listens before you ‘get it’. Their lyrics get better and better. Oh, and find live footage. They were a live band. Most of their album were recorded live including the vocals. They were that good. Peace
This is one of my favorite songs of all time. You can just feel the sweat, mosquitos and a chorus of bullfrogs in the swamp. It's perfect. I stole this song off Napster way back in the day and still listen to it on the regular. Thank you for getting to it, Jamel.
Jamel, thank you for finally getting to my favorite band of all time! As an American, I considered loving the Hip to be my great secret, since most of my fellow Americans had no idea who they were. I would be so proud to introduce my friends to The Hip. To watch thir faces as they found the same joy I had known since 1989 or 1990 when I irst heard them on a rock station out of London Ontario, fromacross Lake Erie in Conneaut Ohio. Everyone has their suggestions, so I'll through mine in, too. Scared from the album Day for Night is my favorite Hip song. Also up there are Nautical Disaster, At the Hundredth Meridian, Ahead by a Century, Gus the Polar Bear from Central Park, Bobcaygeon, and from their first EP, Last American Exit. Enjoy the ride, my brother.
Seen this and as a Canadian I wanted to see the reaction to one of our legendary bands. It’s awesome to see all the support and I’ll just add how I get chills every time I hear my favourite song of theres, Wheat Kings (Your shirt also embodies the attitude Gord Downie, the lead singer and the band had)
Thank you for sharing and your great comments on 'The Hip'...I still get goose bumps watching people's reaction after listening to this song for the first time. The Tragically Hip were a great, great band and still my favorite band to this day. They are imbedded in my soul forever...Thank you again for your kind words about The Hip...peace brother!
As a fellow Kingstonian, “The Hip’s” songs are the closest I get to home now a days. Every song sounds like Kingston Ontario ( to me). I can now listen to the Hip and not cry. But it took a while. Happy you loved the song. Rob’s guitar playing gives the Hip that different sound and together with Gord their sound is iconic.
Many of us were raised on The Hip, a great band to last through the ages. I know I can speak for many Canadians when I say I’ve passed on this music to my kid. Many great memories go with each of their songs. The boys are truly a National Treasure on the stage and throughout all Canadian hearts.
I have recommended The Tragically Hip to a lot of reaction channels, but yours is one of the first I've seen. They are a national treasure up here in Canada, and my only regret in this life is that I never saw them live more often before Gord passed away. Their last live performance was seen by something like a THIRD of all Canadians. Their discography is huge, and well worth any amount of attention you give it, trust me.

This band had magic. Rock and roll. Pure and simple. They killed it on stage and kept making awesome albums again and again. Definitely got a few of their tunes on my life soundtrack. We were truly blessed to have the Hip in our lives.
I saw The Hip open for Rush at Maple Leaf Gardens in the early 90's. Rush and The Hip were big fans of each other. Great Canadian band!! I saw Rush over 20 times but only saw the Hip 2 or 3 which is something I regret now. Check out anything on Fully Completely - At The Hundredth Meridian, Fifty-Mission Cap, Courage, Locked in the Trunk of a Car, Wheat Kings, Looking for a Place to Happen. All great songs. But so many albums and so many great songs I hope you do some more!
There is a live version of this where Gord starts talking about "The Killer Whale Tank". Pure gold live music. Freaking hilarious and awesome. Google it.
I challenge you to watch the Tragically Hip perform their last concert ever. It was broadcast live nationwide through Canada, not just because the band is so iconic in Canada, but also because the singer, Gord Downie, had brain cancer and knew he was dying. That concert will change your life forever.
I love this soo much! The tragically hip are amazing. The real gift is taking the time to listen to their lyrics. A true canadian band.... I miss gord.
The thing I've always admired about the Hip is they've always done their own thing and followed whatever artistic direction they've wanted to - regardless of any external pressures. The end result is a catalogue that is so very unique in terms of both the themes of their songs and the sonic texturing they have on any given piece. It's also worth noting that Gord Downie, their (sadly deceased) lead singer was a tremendous poet and storyteller. I've always found the cadence and phrasing of his lyrics to be so wonderfully creative. If you have the opportunity, check out a video by Choir Choir Choir - on Oct 11 2018, a year after Gord Downie died, they held a sing-along in Nathan Philips Square in Toronto with two of the members of the band covering "Grace, Too" one of the Hip's more famous songs. It was a remarkable moment that very much demonstrates how much of an impact they had on the Canadian music scene.
So many good songs from this group and you def need to check out something live. Ahead by a Century and At the Hundredth Meridian are some of them. RIP Gord Downie.
One of the best bands to come out of Canada. Love that you're reacting to this, definitely gonna give the Hip some more recognition that they completely deserve! Check out some more hits, Courage, Ahead By A Century, Gift Shop... All amazing songs.
Endless stories throughout the Hip's catalogue. Truly one of the best bands - these guys are Poets (good song btw) and philosophers through and through. Gord Downie's contribution to canadian life is immeasurable.

Check out their live albums and shows. Gord was magical on stage and could connect with everyone there. Once you dive into the Hip you will never be the same!
Iconic Canadian band for many years, would weave Canadian history into their songs. They had fast songs (Little Bones, Locked in the Trunk of a Car), slow songs (check out Bobcaygeon, Wheat Kings). The band was very philanthropic. The lead singer Gord died from brain cancer in 2017, and the country cried. While he was sick, he created an album and short film about the horrific treatment of the Indigenous People, especially regarding the residential schools to try and make children follow white catholic practices, something Canada hides. The whole band truly personifies the good Canadian spirit.
In high school this album came out and it was something that I put into heavy rotation driving around in my truck. Couldn’t have been more Canadian. I have loved that song for over 30 years and to see someone react to it fresh, thanks man, was a real treat. Appreciate you.
One of my favourite songs by the Hip. it just gave us a small glimpse into the quirkiness of Gord Downie. something that would grow and become more apparent on classics like Grace Too, and Locked in a trunk of a car.

Agreed.
I love it all. Gift shop, courage, long time coming, three pistols.. and Grace, too. There’s no shortage of great songs with them.
Wheat Kings....period
Canadians hold the hip in the highest regards , we are proud of them and to be honest this is something Americans couldn’t understand , Gord is Canadian and he is ours ….. this isn’t just music , its what Canada is, I for one am happy the Hip didn’t gain much traction in the States , it’s wrong but I feel most Canadians want to keep them all to ourselves, but with that being said I’m glad you appreciated the Hip..
It's true that some Canadians hold them in the highest regard, but everything else you said is nonsense.
Man, you seem like the kind of guy who would wolf down the last two Timbits. Buy another box man and share them with our neighbours to the south.
any man that plays air guitar for the hip. the blues?? subscribed

Not every Canadian, some of us have better musical taste.

Imagine my immense delight at a Rush concert, when these guys stepped out on the stage to open the show. Thanks Neil, and thanks Gordie ❤️

"38 years old" is another of their amazing songs, the lyrics are quite something
Love playing this on acoustic.
Holy shit!!!! Never thought I'd see my all time favorite Canadian band on here. I'm from Canada(Winnipeg) and can speak for all Canadians that these guys are God's up north. RIP Gordie
But very down-to-earth gods. Which is how we like em.
They could sell out Buffalo, but we're so close to Canada so there's that
What Victoria said. They are adored in border cities.
yes, us western New Yorkers love the Hip!
@Stephen O'Donnell IMO Rush just isn't that great. 3 INCREDIBLE musicians and mostly, again IMO, barely mediocre songs.
The Killer Whale tank version of this. It's the most Gord thing I can imagine.
Edmonton on the first or second night? I was there the second night.
"New Orleans is Sinking" was pretty much the Hip's first big hit. They just kept getting better with age and experience. While Rush is better known outside of Canada, The Tragically Hip are even more beloved within Canada itself (and Rush is a national treasure). Gordie and the boys are iconic.

“Nautical Disaster” is a tear jerker for me:
“I had this dream where I relished the fray
And the screamin' filled my head all day
It was as though I'd been spit here
Settled in, into the pocket
Of a lighthouse on some rocky socket
Off the coast of France, dear
One afternoon, four thousand men died in the water here
And five hundred more were thrashing madly
As parasites might in your blood
Now I was in a lifeboat designed for ten, ten only
Anything that systematic would get you hated
It's not a deal nor a test nor a love of something fated (death)
The selection was quick, the crew was picked in order
And those left in the water
Got kicked off our pant leg
And we headed for home
Then the dream ends when the phone rings
"You doing all right?"
He said, "It's out there most days and nights
But only a fool would complain"
Anyway, Susan, if you like
Our conversation is as faint a sound in my memory
As those fingernails scratching on my hull”
Triggers the old PTSD
Watch the Woodstock version...amazing performance
Master storyteller and lyricist.
Scared always does it for me.
Best song without a chorus, ever.
Fiddler's green about his nephew passing away is so sad
Gordie addressed the scoop schools directly to the P. M. AT HIS LAST CONCERT EVER. RIP MR Gord.
I can rock out to them, but I’m still not past the point of listening to The Hip without crying at some point. Their songs, along with Blue Rodeo were huge parts of my adulthood. I can recall a memory associated with many Hip songs. Gord, we miss you.
Exact same for me with those two bands. Also throw in 54-40 for us West Coasters.

Canada’s national treasure! I love his reaction! This song is 30 years old. Finally some well deserved recognition! RIP Gord Downie!
This is honestly so wonderful. The Hip are such an amazing band and I had a huge smile watching someone fall in love with them in real time.

My favourite Hip song!
Killer Whale song!
Years ago when New Orleans was literally sinking... radio stations stopped playing this song.
At the band's request.
It still is sinking. And everyone in NOLA knows a Hurricane can wipe em' off the map- why do you think the big drink is called a Hurricane?! So spare us.
If New Orleans Is Beat where’s that leave you and me ?? From In Between Evolution explains it all
Yup ,and also stopped playing when the Levee Breaks by zeppelin and Rock me like a Hurricane by Neil Young.
I need to give you a huge hug Jamel for reacting to one of the best from Canada. Love The Hip! Greetings from near "Bobcaygeon"

Thank you for turning us on to a band I have not heard. I love the RAW sound!
Keep going down the rabbit hole...they've been Canada's secret too long
This was an early selection. Part of the reason for the "raw" quality. They consistently put out good stuff for 20 years.
Check out their first five albums in order starting with this album: Up To Here.
Each album takes a few listens before you get it but when you do...:look out. One of the greats.
As raw as a well done steak.
Pls ignore the capitals it’s a typo
I can't listen to The Hip anymore. It brings back powerful memories of being young; wild; free; good friends, and a time when the world was a better, simpler place , now all gone, is just too much for me to process.

My fave is Small Town Bring Down

Many of us were raised on The Hip, a great band to last through the ages. I know I can speak for many Canadians when I say I’ve passed on this music to my kid. Many great memories go with each of their songs. The boys are truly a National Treasure on the stage and throughout all Canadian hearts.
I have recommended The Tragically Hip to a lot of reaction channels, but yours is one of the first I've seen. They are a national treasure up here in Canada, and my only regret in this life is that I never saw them live more often before Gord passed away.

"Hundredth Meridian" always became an epic live song when I saw The Hip! 10 or 11 minutes.

The Hip are Canada’s version of Bruce Springsteen. They are our hearts. Messages and stories behind almost all of their songs.
Glad you like them. Always a great show and full of energy.
