I’m from Australia and only stumbled across The Tragically Hip a few years ago. Gotta say, this music hits your soul like no other. Gord is a genius in his own right but it’s like he continued on with Jim Morrison’s visions on what music should be.
Their gig at Woodstock ‘99 is incredible.

Welcome to Canada's House Band. They aren't the most famous (outside of Canada), they weren't the most talented, best selling, complex, musically challenging, but on a cold Winters day, there is nothing like the warm fuzzy feeling of a Hip song that fills the Canadian soul.
I don’t know, I think they had a unique sound and some rather poetic lyrics.
They were very talented
You would not say that if you were a musician or knew anything about music...some very complex chord progressions and leads with great bass lines and vocals that matched them.
I am not saying they didn't have talent, do they match the virtuosity and musical complexity of Rush, absolutely not, do many people outside of Canada know the Hip exist, not many. Perhaps having to listen to the same Hip songs every half hour or so on the radio has jaded me. Don't get me wrong, they are a BIG step above a regular pop/rock band, but they are not the gods of music some people make them out to be. Gord was a gifted writer, frontman and human being.

Hip are known for telling a tale and weaving you into the storylines...that are often tragic....try ...38 Years Old, My 50 Mission Cap, Nautical Disaster, Locked in the Trunk of a Car, Courage, Blow at High Dough, Babcaygeon, Little Bones, Grace Too, Ahead by a Century......all classic hip songs that got tons of radio airwave time...
Yes! The Hip!! Love this band. As an ice hockey goalie, I'd have the arena DJ put on Little Bones for my warmup. Fast pucks and The Tragically Hip go well together. Its a Canadian thing ❤

The song is about nostalgia, especially the realisation that New Orleans is slowly losing it's soul and the slow erosion of her cultural history. Gordon Downie was a poet and a unique individual who had an amazing way of depicting regular life in the most abstract way with such musicality. I so miss him

No, "New Orleans is Sinking" is actually about the Mississippi River Paddle Steamer - "Queen of New Orleans" that sank on the river in the 1800s. Hip songs usually reference real life historical events in some fashion.
Interesting. But I actually had a few chats with Paul Langlois when I was working in Ottawa at the Bluesfest and they inspiration for that song came after their last visit and they noticed that things weren't quite the same. It was becoming more corporate and less traditional. Although they might have also incorporated part of what you referenced in the song. Anyway, thanks for the info, it's always nice to learn new stuff regarding Hip songs.

This song really reminds me of sitting on a patio on a summer night of one of the bars in Port Dalhousie, late 80’s early 90’s. Oh how I miss my youth sometimes
Don't look for a consistent narrative in a lot of Tragically Hip song lyrics. Gord Downie was a poet who liked to piece fragments of cool-sounding phrases together to make songs with barely cohesive themes. In concert he would recite them in spoken-word ramblings over solos and instrumental breaks, and years later they would find their way into new songs as lyrics. It's part of the charm.

I had a beer with Gord in 1989 when he played at Barrymore in Ottawa. Cool dude..
They were just as strong live, just cool vibe and energy for the whole show. This is off the album Fully Completely and its a fantastic listen, no bad songs

It's just possible to believe a few Canuks have never heard of Rush or Céline Dion, of Justin Bieber or Drake, even of Gordon Lightfoot or Shania Twain or Joni Mitchell, but never to have known The Hip stretches credulity. After all, almost 12 million Canadians - over a third of the population - tuned in to their final concert alone, just over seven years ago.

I've never been a Hip fan, but this one song is one of my all time favourites.
I discovered this incredically hip band in 2001, four years before my home flooded from Katrina. I love Bobcaygeon - Fiddlers Green-100th meridian. Still listening at the 30th meridian.
"New Orleans is Sinking" isn't about the city of New Orleans at all. It's about a Mississippi River Paddle Steamer "Queen of New Orleans" that sank in the 18th Century on the river. Tragically Hip songs are all about twisted real life historical references

I live in Northern Ontario, we have a hotel in our town where Gord Downey frequently stayed before and after his trips to the Indigenous communities on the James Bay Coast. He would take the train “The Polar Bear Express” to the coast. The room that he would stay in is a memorial to Gord with pictures and memorabilia.
Their last show on their very last tour was simulcasted on Canadian TV from Coast to Coast. Business closed so that every Canadian could gather in Halls, Community Centres and Arenas to watch on Big Screens and Celebrate Gord's last performance ever. A band with the original 4 members for 33 years. When they played their final concert from their final tour, because the singer was dying from brain cancer, it was streamed literally around the planet. It's estimated that it had a viewership of 16 million people. I watched it with about 5000 people at a food truck festival in New Westminster.

I'm late to the party. I first heard the Hip on a CBC new music program in 1987. I was on a Search and Rescue boat on Lake Huron. I then had the good fortune to see them live in Kingston when they released Up to Here in 1989. They are a big part of my life's soundtrack.
Saw them play live several times...Gord was amazing to see live...so much energy...we Canadians miss him very much...true Canadian musical genius ❤

This preceded Katrina when New Orleans flooded. The song was recorded at Muscle Shoals a famous studio in Alabama in the US.

I'm a bad Canadian and have never been a HUUUUUGE fan of the Hip ... but there are some songs that just get you. This is one of them. I'm quite surprised that you're Canadian and haven't really heard much of them as they've been seen as Canada's band for YEARS! But there are bands I've never heard of that people look at me as if I'm a martian. lol. 2 other Hip songs I love are 50 mission cap and Bobcaygeon. I enjoy seeing reactors react to Canadian bands :) Thanks!
The late, great poet-singer Gord Downie with the urgent, emotional vocals. There is a huge catalogue for the Tragically Hip. Blow At High Dough is another early huge hit by them. Among my favourite Hip songs are Three Pistols, Little Bones, Twist My Arm, 38 Years Old, Bobcaygeon and 50 Mission Cap (true story about Stanley Cup champion hockey hero Bill Barilko). Ahead By A Century is a great anthem. Also react to Cordelia, Poets, Wheat Kings and My Music At Work.
Another great Canadian band to check out is Triumph. They were popular in the late 70’s early 80’s. Magic Power, Lay It On The Line, anything from them is good.

This song was I thought a bit prophetic in some ways. When Katrina hit in 2005 the song was pulled from every radio station in North America, and it was about 18 months before we started to hear it again. I did not know it was released in 89, it just seemed like it was there forever LOL!

They started out in the grunge time....and I love that Era....the Hip survived and continued until the unfortunate death of the lead singer. These are the people that make our world better....and everyone should have the chance to listen to them and other great bans. I'm personally a big fan of Blackberry smoke...I believe they are from Georgia and seen them once in Canada...they have a big following here. Problem is the crtc , Canadian broadcast system limits music from other countries....kind of protectionism ! I say ...screw off! So....UA-cam has given me the chance to listen what I want 😊😊😊
Oops! The Hip are from Kingston, Ontario, Canada. They got a lot of airplay in Canada. I don't know why they were never able to break through in the states.

My point was, I have other music, bands etc. That I hear on UA-cam that are not played on Canadian radio stations because of " liberal protectionism" why can we not enjoy other music from other countries???? Sam & Phil, the PERFECT song for your 1st Tragically Hip listen!!! 1st single on their 1st album. However...be aware...
1st album - very bluesy
2nd - slightly less bluesy
3rd - not much blues, but the Hip sound is very prevalent.
4th, etc - all, unique, Canadian music from a truly Canadian band.
If you jump around albums, you might find the sound/style strange. (This is a common mistake by reactors because no band like the Hip needs to be experienced in chronological order.)
Without a doubt, someone will recommend the song "Ahead by a Century" which is from their 5th (?) album. Great song, but 100% different to "New Orleans is Sinking". Hence, you might not get full enjoyment out of later songs. So, let me recommend a song from their 1st and 2nd album. (2 big hits)

I always saw the song as When stuff in your own life starts to go sideways. The trouble is rising. We all have moments we know the ship is sinking. It's going to sink. New Orleans is sinking is a good metaphor because life is always a build up and you know when you are headed into the pickers and weeds.
Gord and the boys kitchen door wide open with this album, what a shame we lost him far to soon!
I'm from the Toronto area and grew up with this band... If you wanna go deeper, try "Nautical Disaster" or even better "Wheat Kings"...
I think they are actually singing about a boat called new Orleans it sinks and hes on the river bank it sank by Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Great reaction, but yes, the lyrics were not clear to me. (It's just me, I did not fully understand it) But the instruments and the New Orlean sound was Amazing, the voice spectacular.

Regardless... They will forever be in my top five bands of all time. This isn't even close to their best song, in my opinion, though it's still good.
