I spent a lot of time in Roberts Barracks as a kid. My dad was a Royal Engineer then became a civilian Technical Inspector attached to the Engineers about '78. His office would have been in the middle of the barracks. I also spent about 10 years in the Scouts to about 1990. I'm pretty sure the building at 4:05 is the one we had. We were situated in the top floor. I remember those stairs being quite annoying, especially if you were moving kit! The youth club also had a floor. The buses would pick up us kids up from various locations around Osnabrück, I came from Lotte.
I distinctly remember driving into Roberts Barracks myself once as I had to bring my dad something. This must have been about 92-93. I stopped at the main gate and the guard came to the car. He must have said something along the lines of signing in in the guardroom but because his accent was so thick I had to ask him 3 times because I didn't understand him 😆 I suspect he was from Liverpool or somewhere more northern.
And another thing: We had just parked to sign out near the main gate. 2 soldiers were on the main square in full gear in summer, running around in circles with their rifles above their heads and 2 NCOs shouting at them. I turned to my dad and asked him "what's up with them?"
He just laughed and said "oh they must have been naughty" 😉
Oh, what a wall of text. Anyway, nice of you to upload this stuff. I have quite a bit of watching to do now.

My step dad was stationed there, and we moved with him in 1977. 16th field squadron, left in 78, lived in the flats in Lotte . Long time ago.

I just found the videos here on youtube and I would like to write some things to you. I'm 46 years old and I was born in Osnabrück and I still live here with my family. So we, that means my Parents, my brother and me grew up with the British Forces in Osnabrück. For us it was unreal to think about the day all Forces leave the town, but the day came, in 2008. That was a very very sad day for us because we lost friends. Don't forget that. My Mum grew up very close to the Caprivi (barracks?) on the Westerberg and her brother had a friend in the garrison who brought chocolate and these things to the children. I grew up with the Forces in Osnabrück, when I was 18 me and my best friend started to visit the Disco "Broadway" near the station, maybe you remember that.
We have so many positive memories of the Forces, I can´t write it all. At the last "Freedom of the City" in 2008 I made a video of almost the complete parade, maybe I will upload it sometime.
All the best for you and don't forget Osnabrück! (I hope my english is good enough to understand... ;) )

Thank you for your comments Sven and don’t worry, your English is great. I certainly won’t forget Osnabrück and go back a few times per year and will continue to do so. It’s really nice to hear what it was like from a German perspective😁

Looks like the old RMP station is still standing and the Sgts mess across the road. My RMP company (TA) visited 115 on exercise Rhino Replen in 94. Funny to see GCP has moved into one of the barrack blocks!

I first entered these gates,in the snow just before Xmas 1952.
    Was in RHQ block 20.
Been back 7 times over the years and pleased to say Block 20 and others along that side are still there and in use.

I served here from 1972 to 1976, first with 43 Field Support Sqn, then 25 Engr HQ Sqn. and finally 12 Field Sqn. (Nova Scotia). As I lived in Germany for I long time after I've witnessed the slow demise as a lot of the camp was pulled down bit by bit. My old 12 Sqn. Block has been empty for years .... only the memories remain.

I was stationed at Roberts Barracks from September 1955 to June 1957 when I did my National Service. What a nostalgic find!

My dad, Michael Moore, was also there in '56 for his national service (Royal Engineers). Went to the Suez Canal on board the Dilwara. I took him back for a look in 2016 and his block was still there. Would you be able to give the location of the NAAFI? We weren't able to locate it in the surrounding streets. Cheers

Thanks for that, I used to live in the block (in1980) that is now the police station, 1.50 mins in, that was the accommodation for the RAOC and REME attached to 25 Engineer Regiment, such a shame all them good postings in Germany have now gone, wouldn't join the Army anymore just to be stuck in the UK.

We moved to Münster in mid-1976 as the Nuclear Convoy Battalion charged with the protection of 8 Regiment RCT.[73] In this role, the Battalion was equipped with Landrovers, a change from the normal equipment used by previous and subsequent NCB units, which were armoured infantry battalions.

I was just up the road at Scarborough Barracks (Kapriv Kaserna). I remember Roberts Barracks. Wasn’t that where the RMP held Den Wats after killing that taxi driver back in 1967. I can’t find my old barracks anywhere on Utube.

Curious. You may have known my dad, Bill Young, Royal Engineers. Left in 1977 or 78 to become a civilian Technical Inspector attached to the Army. Royal Engineers Special Bridging Inspection Unit (RESBIU). He had an office in Roberts Barracks for many years, in the middle of the camp. That's when our family became civvies and suddenly had to go to german school etc. Quite a shock learning a new language and way of life 😀
Luckily due to my dad's job and friends in various units we still had access to teabags, biscuits and newspapers like Sixth Sense!

Hi, I've enjoyed looking at your videos, I've looked in on them a few times over the last few months. My Dad, Mum, sis and me were at Lippstadt in the 1970s. The bases being so near to each other and that. It's a shame that you can't look on google street view for Germany tho. It's funny because you remember your Mum and Dad using German language for things like lotto zielen, krankenwagon, Hawaii funf null... I've probably spelled those wrong tho.

I arrived there, with Jack Ward, in 1956 as 38 Corps Engineer Regiment was being changed to Higher Establishment because of the Suez Crisis. We never went to Suez but neighbouring 36 Regiment did and they received the GS medal!

I served in 37 Field Squadron Royal Engineers in Robert’s Barracks November 1964 to November 1968
I mastered the language at night school. That led to wonderful experiences working Damage Control on the many big NATO Exercises that took place. Think of the damage that Tank and Truck drivers cause falling asleep through exhaustion. Regards from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Happily retired Mech./Elect. Engr.
