Katydid facts: called bush crickets but that's confusing! | Animal Fact Files

  • Katydids are a large group of insects with more than 6,000 recognized species. They may sometimes be referred to as "bush crickets" or "long horned grasshoppers" but this can be confusing since they're not closely related to either! Katydids are found throughout the world in temperate and tropical climates. Most have short lifespans that complete within a year's time, but some may live longer! Katydids are most often the insects that create the loud symphony of the night.
    Scientific Name: Family - Tettigoniidae
    Range: All continentes expect Antarctica
    Size: 0.2 to more than 9 inches (5mm - 23cm)
Diet: host plants or other insects
Lifespan: typically 1 year (some live longer)

I found eggs on a branch earlier this year. Brought the twig inside and put it in a bag. Forgot about it. Then saw they hatched - into katydids! They are living in a tank until the weather warms up. They hatched early because they were inside. They are munching on basil. Looks like I’m planting a basil plant in the yard for them to eat over the summer! 😹

I live in an environment in the Northeast that holds a lot of Common True Katydids and Greater Angle-wing Katydids. Once it's late August, the males are singing a lot at night. Greater Angle-wings can be heard into early November based on the air temperatures.
Katydids are like the replacements for Cicadas before it gets much colder.

Katydids are always flying into my apartment for some reason. Had one last night and another tonight. I just get them to climb on something long and I fling them back out the window. They're mellow, cool little guys. Well, can't really say 'little'. The one that was in here last night was nearly the length of my entire hand. Big boy.

So that's what it was! I saw a weird cool bug this morning at the bus stop trying to climb the bus sign. It fell off but seemed really determined to try to climb things, so I put it over by a tree. I was wondering what it was, and came across this video by complete coincidence tonight! Sure enough, there's a Katydid in this video that looks 100% identical to what I saw.

There is one that's been hanging around my back porch area for about a week now. The first time I saw it, it was on a screen door. I noticed that it's hind legs were pretty much tied together with a spider web. So I thought I would help and I grabbed a stick. I put the stick on the web carefully, and it crawled pulling itself from it. Then a few seconds later it flew onto my shoulder and sat there for a few moments. Then flew off towards the ground. Since then it's just been hanging out around there. Kinda confused why it keeps staying there. Have been tempted to let it get into my hand and then take it to the nearby forested area so it can actually blend in. To me, I thought maybe they were perhaps related to the mantis.

one of the leaf-like katydids crawled into my window on the second floor of my house and was stuck there for a week. i couldn’t get it out because i have an air conditioner installed at the moment, but he died a few days ago. (did some research and learned the difference between male and female) it fell off of the window and it on top of my air conditioner right now, just decomposing… really sad because this is the third year in a row one of these has visited me but this is the first time one died in my window. i do not live in a tropical area so this part confuses me… the fact that every year every katydid was missing it’s big leg on the same side. i thought maybe it was the same one coming back for three years but since they usually live one year.. maybe it’s a coincidence. but rip the katydid in my window :( can’t even get him out until my air conditioner is removed.

So that scritchy sound at the beginning of the video is what a katydid sounds like? Here in Chicago round about this time of year (late July, early August, hot and humid weather), we get some sort of insect that clicks, and I was told by several people that those are katydids. I've also seen other videos here on youtube...some say the scritchy sound is the katydid, and some say the clicking sound is the katydid. Do they make both types of sound? If not, do you know what critter DOES make the rapid clicking sound?
