I've raised so many katydids, you are absolutely right on how to care for these creatures. You have to keep upping the size of the enclosure as he grows. There are many insect species that use spermatophores for reproduction like crickets and mantises.
That was really informative! I grew up on Long Island (NY) where there must have been tons of these guys in the woods. When I first went to summer camp near the Hamptons they used to scare me and keep me up at night! All that clicking and screeching!
I love all amphibians reptiles and insects. Even when I was a kid i loved them all. I raised amphibians from egg to land and also have kept different insects i collected same with amphibians. I only kept 2.
You are underrated, this is great! Everything matches what I've observed over years of keeping katydids. One thing though, you said they molt 4 times to reach adulthood. I found some eggs of this species and raised them. After 3 molts I could see the wings forming, and another 3 molts later it was an adult, so 6 molts. May I ask where the number 4 comes from? This is an old video so if you don't answer that's fine, but I am curious. Also, going by my katydids' molt schedule, it appears yours has already molted 4 times 🤔
Hey! This is great! I have spontaneously become the parent of an adult broad winged Katydid (Chicago loop) and this is great to hear! Do you know if there’s any year-round foods that I can feed this girl? Come fall i won’t be able to find any leaves on the trees around me and I’m concerned for her. I heard they can live for a while if they aren’t killed off by frost.
They tend to like leaves of citrus fruits so you could try to find a small citrus plant to keep inside! Maybe try storing some leaves that it's been eating inside the fridge or snagging some leaves from a local nursery. Hope this helps!
I had 2 pet Broadwinged Angle Katydids, I fed them ice burg lettuce as a treat and leaves from my orange tree. I had them as adults from July 2019 to Janurary 2020. I kept them indoors at a temperature 67 degrees and above in the winter, the warmer the better. They also still sing at night which I enjoyed. They are so fasinating to watch and keep. 🙂
I have made a terrarium for one here in Michigan. I put a ton of Moss and bark together in it. And she is starting to settle in. The Moss and bark I found in my back yard. Out in the country. Maybe you could do same. And moisten it. It helped me. And now she is doing fantastic.
Hi, I am desperately trying to find where katy dids habitat stops.. ie; where is the most south I would hear a katy did with the sound that we hear here ( commonly heard on the north east of USA)? If you have any info. could you get in touch?
I took one in as a rescue about 2 weeks ago and they absolutely will eat fruits depending on what you give them. When i dice up apple slices for my bearded dragon, I make a side dish for mine, and it loses its mind. Its like giving a kid a bag of candy
So cute!!! I love Katydids ❤️

@@kasieleow1200 I'm in Michigan too what kind of leaves do you feed it?
You can message me on my Instagram on KasieBrave. I'll share pictures of the tree and it's the one she loves.
Hi, Can you tell me where in the "South West" you hear them? And as well - Is there anywhere in Europe one can hear them

Do they eat fruits? If so, what fruits do they eat?
They mainly just eat the foliage

Spermatophores are not gross. Especially when you breed them!!!
