I grew up in So. Cal. so tried to listen to Dr. Demento's 4-hour live show on KMET every Sunday night through most of my teens. I even would tape some his shows for a while on my reel-to-reel tape recorder. Fun times!
I wish we had radio was like it was in the late 60s and 70s free form, Real DJ's who didn't have to follow a play list... Everything now is on a loop & ya hear the same shit over and over.
On Commercial radio, to be sure. Heck, they were on a loop 50 years ago! However, there are still free form shows all over the country on community and college radio stations: KFJC, WFMU, KTRU, KZAX-FM, KEXP, KALX, KUSX etc., etc. Take advantage of the internet!
It's very cool to see this interview, thank you for sharing it. =) It's kind of shame Larry King wasn't nicer to Dr. Demento though. Dr. Demento is an intelligent, creative, and kind man.
I agree with you on both points . The Dr . was very intelligent and well spoken . I used to listen every weekend . Many of the songs still stuck in my head and I'm 62 this year ! Fish heads, My name is Larry, Boot to the head , just to name some . Larry king was being a bonafide jerk
Hard to believe that Dr. Demento is only 8 years younger than Larry King and yet the interview plays as though Larry is admonishing a youngster for his obsession over novelty records and his radio persona. 😂 Also I love the sound Larry makes here 0:37. The look he gives makes it seem that he can’t believe he has to do an interview with the doctor. It’s hilarious how even in 1985, Larry was the same brash old guy I knew of him as a kid when my dad would watch his talk show many years later.
Which Tower? I worked at Tower Sunset and he would come in with Weird Al sometimes. I have a signed VHS copy of UHF because Al was such a regular customer.

What exactly was Larry's problem? He treats Dr. Demento as though he were a defendant on a witness stand; as if he had to justify his show. Apparently he had no clue who Dr. Demento was or what his show is all about. Totally unprepared for this interview.
Can you upload the first episode of Larry King Live on CNN from June 3, 1985, featuring a full hour of an interview with New York governor Mario Cuomo as King's first guest? This includes footage of Governor Cuomo's speech at the democratic convention on July 16, 1984. Governor Cuomo discusses the following topics such as the power of television, the vulnerability of being a governor, whether or not he will be running for president, why Lee Iacocca would make a good presidential candidate, the similarities between Christian and political service, the essence of morality, the problem's with President Ronald Reagan's tax reform proposal, the economics of New York and the United States as a whole, the treatment of the middle class, and his concept of tax reform. Then Cuomo takes calls from viewers, which leads him to discuss the following subjects, such as how his concepts differ from those of the New Deal, space weapons, the need for states to help each out, corporate taxes, bank failures, the way in which he offended the National Rife Association, tax deductions, the death penalty, the future of American cities, and how the middle class will be affected by President Reagan's tax plan. Includes Larry King Live intro and going to commercial bumpers, and the closing credits featuring the Larry King Live logo appearing over clips from the interview, the frame zooms out and the text "(c)1985, CABLE NEWS NETWORK, INC ALL RIGHTS RESERVED" appear.👍
It was a really odd decision, on Larry King's part, to make this a hard-hitting investigative journalism interrogation (attack?) instead of a fun and informative interview with The Dr. Demento...
I’m glad I’m not the only one seeing it; King seems to be making Barry very nervous here… like a disapproving father, Larry talks to Dr. D like he’s a child who’s done something wrong.
Larry King truly was just a boring adult, wasn’t he? Like, it seems like Dr. D here is very uneasy with the interview, and King comes across as pretty dismissive, like a disapproving parent who doesn’t fully respect their kid’s career choices… That’s not to speak ill of the dead either, that’s just what I see from King in this footage.
Lighten up Larry!!!
I agree. He brings it down.
This man taught me to appreciate music of all genres.

He is so sweet and nervous… what a legend. I feel like he didn’t realize quite how awesome he is (or how cute tbh). Ijs 😻 🤷🏻♂️

I wish that all Doctors had to dress like Doctor Demento.
Demento was a gent
Still is!
Too bad this wasn't a longer interview-Dr.Demento is quite interesting!
Listened every Sunday night in the 70's and on
The doctor is very classy
I have that box set; bought it at Tower Records. Thanks for posting this interview.

I cant wait to see the movie they make about this amazing person starring Zach Galifianakis. U know this will happen some day.
That will never happen! Dr. Demento appears in the new Weird Al Yankovic movie 🎬

That's how Larry King is, no filter, straight to your face. Asking questions that teeter on the brink of rudeness.
@@Reydel_TrueWork so, like proto-Howard Stern?
Dr demento discovered WEIRD al Yankovic 🤔

This guy knows his stuff
RIP Larry King 1-22-21
"Other than Yankovich..." *eyeroll*
Yeah Jimmy Buffett had lots of comedy in his songs even if they weren't a comedy genre. Larry is quite a cynic here.
He was buddies with the genius guitar player, John Fahey, when they were kids. His story is much more fascinating than playing Purple People Eater.
i never noticed how handsome he is,
Larry was more interested in asking the questions than in getting the answers. I would have appreciated more time for the answers.
It was a really odd decision, on Larry King's part, to make this a hard-hitting investigative journalism interrogation (attack?) instead of a fun and informative interview with The Dr. Demento...
Right?! I feel like I’m watching a parent blatantly disapprove of their child’s career choices!
Everybody remember when there was only one kind of glasses frames?
he seems mean to Dr D . kind of sad
I’m glad I’m not the only one seeing it; King seems to be making Barry very nervous here… like a disapproving father, Larry talks to Dr. D like he’s a child who’s done something wrong.
Seems Larry King was not thrilled with this. I sense he was a bit condescending.
Larry is so dense.
Ray Stevens
Is Dr demento single?
He is widowed having lost his beloved wife Sue.
Dr. D is either very nervous to be on TV, or coked out of his mind. I prefer the former, but...
Nervous as heck because the interview is awkward as hell. Larry just didn't appreciate Dr D.

larry king be pissing me off smh
Why Larry??? Because it's FUN, it's different and life is to short to be serious and boring all the time....jeez man
Larry King was such a terrible interviewer. Awful questions!
Larry was not being a nice guy here
leave larry king alone! the doctor is trying to be eccentric and he's questioned thus.
I respect who Larry King was in his career, but when I see him clearly making a guest nervous on his show, I’m gonna address it.
Why be interviewed by a stick in the mud?
