Such a great documentary! The story of hard work, dedication, and heartbreak, is so well told through film. My son went to state last year for the first time in 7th grade, but fell 1 match short of the podium. I can say proudly that while his eyes were dam glossy, he never shed a tear. I was so proud of his wrestling and the toughness he showed through all his wins, as well as his losses. Me on the otherhand, held it together just long enough till i snuck outside. At which point I let out some tears. I didn't cry because i was sad he lost. Honestly not sure why i cried. Wrestling is such a hard sport and takes so much dedication and sacrifice. So i guess I'm just a soft guy. Teared up a bit when the senior lost in this movie too. Anyway, great movie guys.

Thank you for watching and for the compliment. We worked hard on this film for people like you. Wrestling is powerful. Laying out all your efforts is powerful. Leaving nothing left in the tank is powerful. A tender heart that has the courage to face all this isn’t weak. Wrestling into states is a great achievement. I hope your son and you can can continue with resilience and share more of these meaningful memories together. Thanks again.

God...the sobbing broke my heart. My 9 year old got knocked out of states when he thought he had a clear shot to placing....the heartbreaking sobs that came from him made me cry...even tho I was trying to be strong. I couldn't imagine it being his last match ever ..and losing in such a horrible way...the ref ended his season for him. Watching this makes me question (for the millionth time) why I got my twins into wrestling. They're both so good, but the better you are, the harder you take losses. If my 9 year old son's sons kill me, I can imagine how I'll feel to hear those heart breaking sobs at 18...💔

It was heartbreaking to watch Joe through that- I actually left my camera on the ground to go after him and make sure he was going to be okay. That’s why the video goes black but the audio keeps running. I felt like that was still important to include in the film. Honestly the rest of the production wasn’t the same after that. It took Joe a while to come around but when he did, he was his class-clown self again. Tough kid. I hope your sons find the wisdom and benefit from their losses ☺️. Sometimes not meeting our goals is exactly what we need to grow.

@32:00 I felt that my senior year. Finally won districts and went to regionals to be taken out by #2 and #4. I bawled my eyes out for a long time. After some words I went back to cheer on my team. My season wasn't over yet cause I went back to practice to help my teammates prepare for State. Great times and experienced every emotion in this sport.

I came across this to quicky realize this is all right in my backyard. Amazing to see Eric Chambers as when I was his age I was wrestling with his birth father. Spent a lot of time with him and his mom at tournaments and the freestyle/ Greco-Roman club. It was sad to lose a great guy like that, so young.
    Great documentary!

Small world! To this day I still see my teammates as family. Losing brothers is always heartbreaking, but like Eric, we find a way and give it our all. That’s wrestling with life 💪

It’s so different in NJ. All the better kids wrestle at HS practice 3 to 4:30/5 then go to club practice with whoever’s in your club 7 to 8:30/9. And that’s a horrible call with the twisting the finger.

    • @reelnationmedia

Many wrestling clubs in PA follow a similar practice of training in high school and attending a club afterward. This training method is one of the reasons why wrestling in PA and so competitive. However, some young athletes may not have access to clubs due to financial constraints or geographical location. That's why I was attracted to this particular team, as they had wrestlers who performed well despite not having access to these clubs. For me, the essence of wrestling is how it can enrich someone's life through victories or defeats. But you’re spot on! The schedule you are describing is what the best of the best do at the high school level. Also, the finger thing was wild. Thank you for watching my film! Hope it gave you some insight!

It was incredibly difficult for me not to yell while filming on the side of the mat. My heart went out for these kids as I watched them, in preparation for filming, suffer through the year’s practices and matches. I agree with you, but it’s hard to hold your energy back when your heart is racing and in the moment.

Wrestling is an ancient sport that has been practiced for thousands of years, with its origins traced back to ancient Greece. It was often used as a form of military training in many cultures throughout history, such as the ancient Persians who used "koshti" to prepare soldiers for battle. The sport helped to build strength, endurance, and mental toughness, as well as teach strategy and quick thinking, all of which were valuable skills for soldiers on the battlefield. Today, wrestling continues to be a physically demanding sport that requires discipline, humility, and respect, and is enjoyed by athletes around the world. Many famous athletes and public figures, such as former US President Theodore Roosevelt and UFC fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov, have backgrounds in wrestling.
