  • What price are Ohio High School wrestlers willing to pay for a championship? Lance, driven by his over-bearing father, has repeated the 8th grade, worked out on Christmas Morning and wrestled with 600-pound bears. Matt, raised by a single mother, trains relentlessly while starving himself in hopes of a title.
"Pinned" is the eye-opening true story of two wrestlers willing to do anything to become champions.

wrestlers are a brotherhood. the pain, dedication no matter if you win or lose. it is the greatest sport. I wrestled back in the mid '90s in Oklahoma under an all American , state champion coach. once a wrestler always a wrestler.

Not only the physical pain but the mental anguish you put yourself through. Having to push yourself through those times when your tired and haven’t eaten anything in days knowing you have a two hour practice to go to. All the demons in your head telling you to quit but you continue to push through it day in and day out.

@@johnstepanic1183 I used to wrestle from the mid-70s to the late 70s. We used to use plastic sweats which they don't let the wrestler to use anymore. Squeezing that last amount of sweat out of you was the toughest thing for me. You can always get used to being hungry but you never can get used to being extremely thirsty. At that young age you should be dreaming about girls and not what you're going to drink after your weigh-ins.

I have this saying... It goes " wrestling doesn't care. Wrestling will break your little heart." I've seen solid ass dudes train for four years plus, go into the finals of State as seniors, 41-0 on the season and get their shit rocked 11-0 by an 8th grader. And just because the kids were on two different levels. Seen kids that should've been state placers and All Americans go 0-2 in their post season tournament. Seen 3x champions get pinned in the state finals when they were winning 13-0 with a minute left. I don't even want to go into the topic of guys that should've been at state or nationals.... My point here is that wrestling will never bend the knee for you just because you've earned it. So NEVER bend the knee for anyone you shake hands with. You go out to win EVERY match or don't go out there. That's the only way.

I wrestled in late 90s. I graduated in 96. We had no real idea about nutrition or smart ways to cut weight. But we had lots of heart. I to was someone who had more heart than physical ability. But man how I wouldn't take anything for those experiences. I also truly believe it made me tougher and able to handle tough situations in my adult life. Thanks wrestling and all the great coaches and wrestling partners at Castlewood high!!! Thanks for everything

This movie reminded me so much about the ridiculous (and sometimes quite dangerous) perspective on weight cutting and competition in wrestling. I feel slightly embarrassed to admit it, but the wrestler Curly from Lakewood reminded me a lot of myself during my youth. I firmly believe i would have had a far more successful career if i was given a more wise approach to diet in wrestling. I attribute most of my gas tank running out in tournaments to lack of proper calories and nutrition. If i only knew then what i know now.

Fuzzy Bear Curly’s coaches Curiale and Duffy wanted him to eat more. He was obsessed with drinking water and apparently binge eating on the weekends. Then having to painfully cut weight during the week without proper nutrition. He had a successful college wrestling career and hopefully found a more balanced approach to nutrition and cutting weight if necessary in a better way. After re-reading your comment I think u realize he brought a lot of hardship on himself.

id guess 90% of state champs in ohio were dominant wrestlers ever since they were 8 years old. Most elite wrestlers in high school live and breathe wrestling, and have for their entire lives. Even if you take a hardworking kid and coach him as best as possible, winning a state title is no easy feat. He doesnt mean that they dont try their best to coach the, he means that not everyone is talented enough to become a state champion, but you'll know once you see it.

It's the age old question: how do you motivate kids who have no life experience and don't know what they want to do for a career? I was one of those kids who didn't have enough encouragement and needed my parents to give me some direction at that crucial time. I played club soccer all growing up, was MVP 3 years in a row and then hurt my knee in high school senior year. After my surgery I didn't have club soccer and I just kind of drifted and never got back into it. It wasn't long until I was 23 kicking myself in the ass because I had really found the drive I was missing, but I had missed my window. If I had someone looking after me and helping out just a little bit, it most likely would've been enough to get me through those years 18-22 when younger people still don't have things figured out. Kids need guidance. If you go that route of letting them figure it out for themselves the chances are they won't figure it out in time.

@@azteacher26 don't let your age be am excuse for you to settle. My mom always used to tell me in her broken English (native Korean) , "never say too late." As a teen I used to moan and gripe about not having learned a skill, took on a new hobby, or played a sport as a young child. I am now in my late 20s and lament the fact that had I started something in my teens when I was moping, I would have more than 10 years experience in whichever endeavor I chose. Even now if you decide to go learn to play the piano or get into boxing, by the time you hit your 40s or 50s, you will have 20 plus years of experience in it. The difference is the kids on one side have a lot of guidance and are only focusing on wrestling and keeping the grades up and on the other side, you have kids managing a broken home, a job, their grades so on so forth.

I think Colin is my favorite to watch wrestle in this film. He's a power wrestler like Lance but just so quick and smooth with it like a REAL early 2000's 112 pounder haha.

While it was a pretty good film, a lot of things really bothered me. First off, the way that Matt cut weight was terrible. A kid that I wrestled with did it the same way, won the sectional and was so burnt out from the years of losing so much weight, he didn’t bother wrestling at states. You need to fuel your body and work your butt off. That’s one thing Mr. Palmer and I agree with, probably the only thing. I’m all about helping my kids succeed but only if they are willing and not to the extreme of Mr. Palmer. The thing I was truly disgusted with was holding your sons back for competitive advantage. Beyond disgusting. And wrestling a bear... I have no words.

Lost 12 lbs to get to 88 in a month. And that wasnt nearly as bad as wrestlers bc we didnt suck water weight, just were down to ribs and spine sticking out.

That dude has no space to be "losing weight". This is one thing that ticks me off about wrestling that should change.
I ended up losing a tournament because of getting the Flu trying to make weight back in the 80's. Won the first match, but I had nothing left to win the other two. Of course, likely wouldn't have happened today given what I know about nutrition, just go Keto and Intermittent fast, and you can eat the same amount of Calories but you're eating much fewer carbs so your body burns your fat stores instead of the carbs you're eating. Still. When you especially have no fat stores like this kid, that's really bad for a person's body and is a form of child abuse.
Watching that last match (before the finals) was just terrible... Seeing his pain, not so much the match itself, it's simply that he took so much out of himself that he had nothing left to give the match. You can see his opponent was entirely "healthy". While he simply had "tortured" himself to try and get there.

1:17:40 What you're seeing is an illegal slam. Matt Curley clearly said he could continue and then did continue. When asked if Matt Curley could continue, had Matt said, "No" then he would have won the match and been allowed to continue. Matt refused to win that way. He'd rather take a loss and maintain his integrity because of that whole....the wrestler was illegally slammed on a technicality but said he wasn't ok to continue but then continues in the next match...argurment. This was 18 years ago so I don't know how much has changed. Also, I could be wrong. I promise you that was an illegal slam and if that's not the official scenario then Matt was never asked if he could continue or not. Had it been me- I would've argued that was an illegal slam and if I didn't get my way then I would've punched the ref and started a riot. That's the way I was back then and that's the way I am now. I've never been to a state wrestling tourney.

Do any wrestlers with top level skill maintain or gain weight for matches? I understand they will be at a natural strength disadvantage but in boxing, the worst thing for a fighter is to cut weight. Those who do are always at a disadvantage vs the fighter at their natural weight or vs. an opponent moving up. Does any of that apply to wrestling?

I won't harp anymore on what others have said about Curley BUT Curley does represent some of the "old world" philosophy when it comes to the lower weight classes. Cut, cut and cut some more. Matt had absolutely no strength at all. No muscle period. Curley would have been better off going 145. Had he hit the weight room like you're suppose to he'd been ok. Idk if he'd have won a state title or placed but he'd would've been a lot happier and probably more productive on the mat. I don't know what Lakewood's practices were like but no way he should have to be cutting like that in season. A good solid practice WITHOUT sweats and you lose 3 lbs. Replace that after practice and float a half lb. off sleeping and you're good.

I wrestled 12 years, never did I not want my kids to wrestle, I love the sport. I totally agree with the Ohio State coach, taking your kids to national tournaments at 7-8 years old is nuts. I mean it is one thing if they are in your backyard but to drive them across the country so they can be 8 year old national champ is just plain dumb. No one gives a shit that your kid won nationals when they where 9, that doesn't mean shit when they get to HS or college.... if they even make it to college as a wrestler. I have been around this sport for 35 years and seen tons of kids burn out or just plain fall apart when they get to the next level because other kids caught up to their talent. No offense to the Palmer family but all those national titles as kids equaled zero national champs in college, point being that all kids will catch up to each other when they are men so let your kids be kids until it matters, run them around as a high school kid, especially their last 2 years, anything before the age 13 is a waste of your kids time and it is just the parents trying to make their kid something they could never be.
