Even though the sphere is hollow, it looks top heavy on that wire stand. I find the idea of a pair of hands gently grasping it seems appealing. As if still in the sculptor's embrace... Happy 2022, Year of the House!
I'd go with a museum/gallery type of aesthetic for Mary's sphere. The stand needs to be as unobtrusive as possible (ideally invisible!) to put full focus on the sphere. You could go with a clear acrylic holder, or paint the stand the same colour as the wall behind it in your new home. Is it destined for a niche of it's own there? I WILL stay tuned... I really love that sphere, Alex, I'm so glad it's the one piece you chose to keep!
Joh, I agree with you 100%. I would almost like the see it under a large cloche if it was in the open, on it's stand. It might when be an idea to talk with the company insuring it to see what they suggest. I love it, too.
I think the sphere is vulnerable to being knocked over in the thrifted stand. Could you commission a wooden stand that has a heavier base with an upper area that is custom fitted to hold the sphere? Happy New Year to you and your family!
I can't believe you didn't get that vase for Melissa! One more thing to move won't hurt, and she's working so hard getting ready for the move, she might have appreciated the thought...plus, it was a gorgeous vase, would have looked nice in one of your art niches catching the light.
The Goodwill bin stores are great for old books. Everyone overlooks them. I got a first edition of Hemingway's Old Man and the Sea there for little more than pocket lint. Made a great host gift for one of my art patrons!
2 years ago at a Goodwill I found 1940s Pyrex bowls in the red and blue, pretty much pristine, paid a whopping 2 bucks and giggled out of the store they now sit in my corner hutch. Love thrifting videos
A couple months ago I saw two Hudson bay blankets (from the 1950/ 60s) in the drop off bins I asked if they could price them so I could buy them.... They charged me the price of any other blanket..... A whopping $3 a pop! Thrift stores are great
@@jasonflay8818 What a score! Our thrift stores would never do that. They have certain people who do the pricing and they won't even sell anything without a tag.
Your stand that holds Mary's sphere, needs to be a hand! :) Maybe you could find one from the company you got your guitar holders from! Or like someone else suggested, have Josh make you one!
Your thrift shops have a lot more to offer than the ones near me! That stand you bought for Mary's sphere looks to me like an accident waiting to happen. Just one bump and the whole thing will topple over possibly breaking the one thing you kept to remind you of Mary. If the stand has to be tall, find one that is more substantial in weight and wider so that it will show off Mary's artwork while still protecting it from falling over and breaking.
Alexander- I want to thank you for sharing your adventures during these not so nice times. You have brightened my days and provided much to be curious about and to enjoy. I sincerely thank you and Melissa and all your crew. Happy New Year to you and yours!🥳
Paint the stand the same color as the wall will be where you are going to display it. That way the sphere stands out and the stand blends in with the wall.
Go back and buy that beautiful blue and green vase, it would be beautiful in your new house. I love those colors too, we are April babies, spring colors are so beautiful
I would hire a wood turner to make like a nice black walnut or koa stand. Well you're canadian so maybe go for maple? There's plenty beautiful flame maple or maybe a spalted maple for a little more rustic feel too it.
I've dug through those bins before. Not my favorite. I have found some nice quilts in there and furniture is cheap. Great place to furnish a house on a budget. I loved that vase.
We got a fondue set for a wedding gift back in 95 and I’ve debated thrifting it over the years but always hang on to it. We’ve used it once or twice I think in 26 years!
I have two complete fondue sets from the 70s and used both frequently back then. It's probably been a good 10 years since we used them. There is a restaurant here called "The Melting Pot" nothing but fondue. It's expensive and always busy.
@@MaryB-ps8lg I loved it when my mom did fondue back in the late seventies and early eighties when I was a kid. - lifetime ago! I wish I had her old set! It was much nicer than the one I have! I still have her old cookbook though called cooking for fondue. Maybe some day I’ll actually use it!
In my opinion, if you're looking for stuff for your own home, the best deals at a thrift shop are lamps. They are crazy expensive to buy new and if you find one that's the shape you like, it's so easy to clean them up and paint them with whatever color or metal color you want and they look brand new with a new shade.
I got an old large ceramic vase from a shed, handle on the side broken off and another chip. I used Durham's putty to restore it and spray painted it with hammered bronze. It's beautiful! If I bought one new in a store it would be $40 or more.
When you were looking at that green/blue vase on the bottom shelf was a red bubble vase. It looked to be a Blenko bubble vase by Wayne Husted. I have 3 but not in that color. I would've loved to pick it up and look at the bottom for further inspection. For Mary's piece, a nice 3 legged wooden carved stand would work great. I use them for pottery with a round bottom.
I don't think you have any earthquakes in your area, but you will have 3 possible ones in your new house. I would mount any tall display stand onto a solid base to keep the ball intact. I would even consider some type of tacky tape or wall picture mount removeable glue to make sure it stays in place for an important piece like that. Love it when you think outside of the box!
that playset Micro Machine is cool I never thought it would be worth that much I have the van too I think somewhere Micro Machines were soo cool and still are

I have that same Pee-wee Herman doll that a friend bought for me at a yard sale, years ago. Ever since that day Pee-wee has ridden in the back seat of my truck.
You can find some interesting things thrifting at times. I used to do it all the time esp at one time for furniture. I agree with something heavy or square as base voor the piece of artwork from Mary. This thingy is nice, but too light. Because of the solidness of the sphere, a square concrete or wooden base would be also very nice. Good luck guys with everything!
There is a special Goodwill near me that sells clothing by the pound. Everything is about 2/3 cheaper. Once I got some really nice leather gloves for 50 cents! It is where unsold items go. The deals are phenominal!
You should get a thick candle holder for the sphere. That metal holder looks cheap and isn't substantial enough to hold the sphere or do it justice. imo
Careful, a stand becomes part of sculpture and that wire stand clashes with the sculpture. A clear acrylic cylinder might work better. Or a clear cylinder shaped glass vase would be more consistent with the modern style. Measure the width of the sphere so you know the diameter of the vase that would work. I bought used thrift store running shoes once... I had a shoe emergency on the way to work. One misstep, and the whole bottom just about fell off! It was lucky I could find something casual in my size in the tiny thrift store next door so I could work my shift. The great part is that used shoes are already broken in and comfortable to wear!

I've found some real treasures at Goodwill!! Including a framed 8 bar original manuscript from J. S. Bach! I thought I had it locked up at auction, but just before it came up, an older, obviously well off gentleman breathlessly stumbled in, and bid me up to all the money I had, period. A lousy $400. It was just the two of us bidding, in a group of maybe 100 people. He won, of course. I am a professional musician, and a dealer of instruments and such things. Good for him. It was listed at $25, and I prebid $105. A very rough period in my life. I'm sure he was a professor at The University of Texas, current or retired. Who knows, but he was the only other person who recognized what it was, all week, in a high traffic upscale store.
There is no rehab for dishwasher-faded Pyrex that I know of. The color on those bowls is an overglaze coating on borosilicate milk glass that was kiln-fired on.

I was thinking the Exact Same Thing!!! When you put the sphere on the stand I thought to myself you should paint that White!!! God Bless You and Your Family!!! Happy New Year!!!
Ask Josh to make a hand to sit the sphere in he would create something special its what Mary's art deserves. Happy New Year from Adelaide Australia 🍾

The wire stand is a distraction to the beautiful work Mary put into her sphere let alone plain ugly.
I'd go with a museum/gallery type of aesthetic for Mary's sphere. The stand needs to be as unobtrusive as possible (ideally invisible!) to put full focus on the sphere. I think the first "stand" you looked at was nicer. It wasn't as elaborate or tall, but it didn't take away the focus from the sphere.
Maybe by removing most of the rings and these swirly bits right at the edge of the sphere, you could set the focus back to the sphere?🤔
Exactly my thought. Needs to be a really simple piece. 👍
I think the problem with that one (my fave, too) is that it’s too short for what he wanted.
Alezander I love the way Melissa immediarely pops inro your mind when you see something she might like. Makes me think that you like her or something.
but he didn't get it, always room for something as beautiful as that. 😪

Paint the stand the same color as the wall will be where you are going to display it. That way the sphere stands out and the stand blends in with the wall.
for Mary's Orb, i suggest two pieces of plexiglass held 90° angles with simple half cuts to allow to stand up.
I'd recommend that you place some felt pads on the contact points of the stand so that it doesn't mar the finish Mary worked so hard to create.
Find a hand statue to hold it . They have kits you can buy and make your own hand statue.
Great idea!
A priceless combo: Mary's sphere and Alexander's hand.
I gotta hand 🤚 it to you, great idea!!
