Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous Review

- Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous reviewed by Rowan Kaiser on PC. Coming to Xbox and PlayStation in March 2022.
Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous has to live up to the expectations of being a Pathfinder adaptation, a sequel to the fascinating if messy Kingmaker, and the next big ambitious isometric RPG. Perhaps shockingly, it succeeds at meeting those expectations, thanks largely to taking the step of implementing a turn-based mode from the beginning. It may take as long as organizing a tabletop campaign to actually finish, but the journey's still worthwhile.

This has been said to Kingmaker's release and will be said again: This game may not be for everyone, but for those willing to invest time and dedication, it really is fun and even addicting to some degree :)
To some degree?
You have to give it to them. Owlcat has created a massive experience and this game is a must play for anyone who likes fantasy CRPGs like Baldur's gates.
The bugs are massive as well tho.
do what most did with kingmaker and wait a year. the bugs should be ironed out by then.
@@megamike15 Most of the bugs are already fixed.
The combat feels very sluggish and the bugs, oh my gods the bugs.
Es un gran juego de Rol, con un Lore profundo y clásico, amo este tipo de juegos 💕 como Pillars of eternity 1 y 2, Original sim 1 y 2, La saga de Baldurs gate o Icewind.
The Divinity series (the biggest recent crpg series) uses turn based combat. I’m not sure how the reviewer forgot this…
Was thinking the same thing
I'm pretty sure the reviewer is saying that CRPG's typically use a real time with pause system. Some of the newer ones only included turn based combat in a patch sometime after the games release e.g. PoE 1. Because of this, those games typically didn't play as fluidly in turn based mode, as the game was originally designed to be played with RTWP. Pathfinder:WotW includes turn based from the get go, rather than an afterthought, and is a more seamless and enjoyable experience because of it.
@@DuRrOs123 The reviewer's overall point is correct. However they claim that Pathfinder: Wrath of the Rightous is the first big CRPG game to have turn based combat right from the start. That is not true, Divinity Original Sin is a big CRPG that started out with turn based combat and it came out 7 years ago. The sequels also have turn based combat and you can't actually turn it off. Baldur's Gate 3, made by the same people, also uses a turn based system but it is still in early access.
@@jonnnney The reviewer’s just plain wrong, they straight up say “biggest change for Pathfinder and the genre as a whole” is turn-based combat as an option from the start when games like Fallout 1 and 2, Arcanum, etc. released over 20 years ago.
@@jonnnney you're correct only if you misrepresent the exact words he used. The exact quote is 'wotr is the first major game of this sort to have a turn based mode from the start'. Key word there is 'mode', indicating that turn based is not the only option for gameplay. He also says this after mentioning other crpgs that have implemented turn based modes, so contextually you can pretty safely assume what they mean. Poor guy has people patting themselves on the backs for ignoring his actual words and just making their own assumptions.
8 seems about right with the current bugs and crusade system, can easily become a 9-9 5 with patches and DLC :)
Hopefully the crusade system gets a big overhaul.
Just use a mod to automatically win crusade battles. Problem solved.
Faiiiiirrrrrly sure Divinity: Original Sin 1 & 2 are turn-based from the start.
Came here to say this. Baldur's gate 3, made by the same company, is also turn-based from the start. Though that is still in early access.
@@jonnnney He means in the context of a RTwP system that also has turn based as an option, not a game that is turn-based only by design.
Faiiiiirrrrrrly sure he meant it's a first for Pathfinder games
@@RK9th here's your attention
lol, typical IGN audience. 🤣
one of the best crpgs in recent memory
Bg3 wins that easily but this one comes in the top 5 for sure
Been playing it since release its so much fun and immersive I'm pretty much a Lich King
This is a must play for cRPG fan. Enjoyed it much more than both pillars and divinity (though divinity combat is second to none.)
ILL YIELD TO NONE
Yeup...thats facts
by divinity do you mean divinity original sin 2? Because that one's a legit 10/10.
"HEAR YE, HEAR YE! BISHOP ALEXANDER HAS BEEN SLAIN BY SEEKERS! CULPRITS STILL AT LARGE!"
Original sin games just feel like excuses to do silly things in combat, dont get me wrong. Love me some dos 2 but this new pathfinder game leaves it in the dust imo
(very different games with very different appeal)
Anyone know what the soundtrack that starts at 4:40's called?
divinity original sin 2 is turn based but okay
Yeah but it doesn't come with both.
And you can switch between turn based and real time combat at any time, including during combat. So you could start off a fight in turn based mode to get off some important crowd control spells, then switch to real time to wreck enemies that are pinned down.
Cant switch between RtWp and Turn Based
100+ hours in. Highly recommend to turn off crusader mode. Just made my game a lot better and less annoying, focused more on story and dialogues.
sadly you miss out on one crucial quality of life feature if you turn it off...The ability to teleport around the world map and go back to Drezen at will. Found out this and im 50hours in..truly devastating.
What's crusader mode?
welp hope you don't plan on going lich then
@@patrickphillips6550 The game operates on... three levels... there's first the "Baldur's Gate" party level, then there's a Heroes of Might and Magic "Crusader mode" (which echoes, and affects, your party mode and vice versa a little), then there's a more narrative 'kingdom management' mode, where you make 'serious decisions' (should you seek an alliance from the Pirates or the goblins).
It's discussed in the video at about 4:30 - 4:50.
Then you miss out on the council meetings.
I'm just waiting the consoles version. Finished pillars of eternity 2 on Xbox and it was amazing. Can't wait for this one.
Really really love these kind of games, but sadly they are always way way way too big. Impossible to finish for me :/
This game is fantastic, everyone get it. Small thing, its not super well optimized but other then that its amazing.
The engine they used (Unity) is partly to blame.
ITS AMAAAAZING
"OH MY GAWD PRESSING PAUSE IS SO HARD AND BORING...ALSO MY FAV GAME IS BALDURS GATE" - IGN
I'll get it on March when it's available on consoles.
Better wait for reviews. Console´s ports of the first game were atrociously bad and the haven´t been fixed in any way.
Pillars of Eternity was alright on console but those loading times made playing it a slog
Is this a must play if you liked Divinity 2 and am waiting for bandits gate 3?
If you have yet to play it, it is now only $11.99 on the playstation store....totally worth the pick up, especially for that price.
Game has some funny scenes. Well written. 9/10 for me
Only bad thing is the bad performance and buggy quests, some of which are game breaking. Gotta put it on hold until the devs make a mega update or something.
Scorching/Hellfire Ray and thier metamagic version is your best friend in the latter game.
They need to get this audio figured out 😂
What do you mean.
charge skill stopping short at invisible walls, confuse spells crash the game, azata path basically unplayable, lich path totally broken, sosiel character quest broken, chapter 5 romance scene broken, camera following broken, teleporting demons in crusade mode that crash the game, quests not activating, npcs missing, items missing, skills with no effect or description, characters re-writing themselves, game freezes, mounted combat not working, enemies being immune to effects like prone that they should not be, items not doing what the description says, items with missing descriptions, feats not doing what the description says/description missing, entire class/mythic paths being totally unable to progress past certain points in the game, enemies with the wrong sprite, enemies with visually bugged sprites. BIG ETC...
Great review, but it'd be nice to avoid showing gameplay of later acts next time. Almost got spoiled there.
Why is switch version online only?
to me its a game of the year. Over 150hours on it and loving every seconds
IGN really needs to hire someone to voice reviews for them.
Lmao
Agreed. Other reviews were OK, not sure what happened to that one...
grow up
@@Daniel-mw1qj Is it juvenile to say you listen to the right voice? Listen to Morgan Freeman narrate something and get back to me...
@@aurelienbernard7745 what's wrong with the reviewer, she was fine.
On sale now on steam
Review was fine but the reviewer voice was annoying. Sorry but the voice was highly grating to listen too.
It always make me so happy to see games like this are well received :')
8. It's a game and you can play it. - IGN 2021
Divinity is turned based since they released and its a crpg same with waateland
Name of Ost in 0:00 - 0:47 ?
Not nominated at the game award. That award is ridiculous.
Excellent review, very thorough.
How are there no pulp fiction references in this review?
Very nice review. Than you :)
They need to just cut out the horrible management side of this next time, it would be better without
Best RPG ive played in at least 10 years. Im 36 and this was a 10 through and through. Cant find better written characters and story in gaming im sorry this was a masterpiece
Have you already finished it? How was the story, characters and difficulty?
@@rayromano6249 He has NOT finished it lmao. This game is *way* too long and can be tedious 2/3 part of the game. And the pacing is *still* slow.
Try Divinity 2,Pillars 2 and Atom trudograd
also wenduag damn she is a bit of a savage sometime like she will have no problem to insult a frecking demon in front of her about he d***k to just prove a point
only an 8? i think this deserve a much higher score. The writing in this game is top-notch. Gameplay is just stellar. so many cool times to do.
If the game actually ran well I'd agree, but Owlcat can't optimize and bugfix a game to save their life.
After terrible release of Kingmaker, they didn't bother to polish this game yet again even with a beta. Score should be even lower just because of that alone.
@@marcuskane1040 if you think this is anywhere close to the first games state you're deluded.
@@klebyell Nothing can be close to the first game's disaster. Still, a very miserable release.
Getting it for XSX next year!
Ps5 not ps4
I'd give it about an 8.5 Myself until they fixed the numerous bugs in Act 5.
But otherwise, the game's easily a 9-9.5 lol.
Everyone: this game is at least a 9-9.5
IGN: 8, take it or leave it
Gives deathloop a perfect 10...haha
@@sterlingdavison7337 This game deserves 10, Deatloop is more of a 7. Cannot compare them, sure, but that game was a big let down for me, personally. This game, though, is my real BG3.
What's with the casual condescension in this review?
He is a troon, comes with the territory
Turn on auto crusade and it’s a 9-9.5. You will play through the game multiple times to try all the mythic paths
*Cries in lich*
And you cannot finish Trickster path and unlock Swarm-that-Walks with auto crusade.
@@MortalReaver thanks for letting me know. I’m about to do my second play through
This reviewer’s voice and tone sounds like he moonlights as an associate professor of intersectional sexuality of frogs.
I'm genuinely curious why this game isn't talked about more. Overall consensus from the players is that its excellent and one of the best CRPG's out there yet its almost as if it doesn't exist in games journalism. Strange.
Amazing games easily a 9 from me
Is the reviewer running out of air during the review? Cardio bro, do some cardio!!! Practice breathing techniques as well!
So has it got a turn base mode😕
yes glad it does. very nice to have both actually
The reviewer should have mentioned that the Crusade mode is optional. You can actually automate it.
If this is the only negative trait in the review, it could have increased the final score.
That's not how reviews work buddy 👍
Except you get a much poorer ending for it, because it assumes you just did poorly in the crusade (It'll straight up say "you didn't achieve many victories in your crusade" or something of the sort)
First major crpg with turn based combat? What...?
Rt with pause crpg with tb mod from start
it's not isometric, there is perspective here.
This online or offline bro...
Regill is best boy.
That is all.
100h in and this game is a easy 9 for me. Whould be a 10 if had more voice over, it's pretty tiring sometimes to read the walls of text
No word on the bugs that can truly ruin a campaign 50 hours in?
if you talk about rerspec as a demon and swamp that walk in act 2 yes they did fix it
When a journalist says “very much worth it”
@DeSPoTNemanjaS you don’t see the issue?
Well if an 8 year old was reviewing this game there would be no issue
What!? No 7 out of 10!?
Surely you jest
Hotwheels game 10 min review, pathfinder a massive rpg game, 6 min. And review basically is big, have turn base from the start, and have rpg features... wow
Upload in 60 FPS.
First turn-based combat RPG game of this sort? What about Baldergate and Original Sin
Baldurs Gate was real time
@@magmakojote1663 he means the new one that larians making its turn based

This dude should write reviews for OTHER people to narrate.
Nope
Why?
Great game, 200+ hours in and havent finished the game
Boys and girls, it's big!!
There was a turn based system in the first game as well.
There wasn't. There was a player made mod with turned based, it wasn't officially supported from the start.
@@ruipedroleite yeah there was its exactly the same as the one in wotr lol
No. Not at the start
@@JaneNayes so what it's there now and it'll be there forever in the future
@@rose.i no
The whole crusade system can be turn off.
lol intro was based
the army rising thing kinda ruined it for me ...
Gameplay looks laggy as hell, no?
Thought the gameplay would be similar to divinity 2 but it looks more like typical PC old games like runescape lame
Is this the spiritual successor of BGI & 2 or just yet anther hack’n’slash gamey for the so -called „modern gamers”?
Are there any exploration or just clearing the dungeons for loot and levelling?
Even better than BG 2 imo. And it is not a hack & slash diablo clone
9.5 out of ten. This game is like a spiritual successor to Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
How????
The curse of 7 is finally broken... lmao
Looks great
The time to complete this game is too damn high!
BALDURS GATE 1 2 hd AND much more+ WRATHhumble bundle 4 just 19€
Thought this was an Apex bundle or something.
quick advice pick wenduag to prevent betrayal and have gueranted laugh trought the game thanks me later

All that money and IGN cant afford a VA that isn't an ear murderer?

The first game of this sort tyo have a turn-based mode from the start? The Divinity series last 2 games anyone?
Divinity is only turn based.
He means turn based as a option the game is real time with pause
Only an 8? Oh well baldur's gate 3 will be the next king of crpg's then.
doubt it
voice reminds me of 2020
random but incredible life changing comment
Listening to this review is like listening to my 70yo Aunt reading me a bed time story.
really deserved a 9.5, still has some bugs, as a score
idk man kinda hard to call a game a 9.5 when it has bugs that cause ur runs to break 100 hours in cause that happened to me and feel like the games earned a nice 6.5 for being just as unplayable as cyberpunk
voice acting was lacked immersion
Cool game!
Is that Cleveland Brown as narrator?☺
Spoilers everywhere
Real time with pause > turn based combat
Real time with pause < turn based combat

2 kinds of people, that's why having both is the best ;)
