I've been there. The jeepneys come from the second world war, they literally spew out thick black unfiltered smog.
      And Thailand isn't much better.
      Or India.
      Or Indonesia.
      Or Africa.
All told that's around 2 billion people with many spewing out this pollution.
But Khan wants you to believe your Euro 4 compliant car is toxic and needs to be taxed to high heaven .....so you buy electric......and then they tax you per mile you drive in 5 years.
Khan is ghettoising London. It's so sad to see this happening to a once great capital.

If you were really concerned over your childs health regarding emissions surely you would move to an area where the emissions were safer than put your child at risk. Also paying £12.50 as a penalty to drive in the zone defeats the object of removing the pollution. So in other words the air quality is safe to a degree in the extended Ulez zone. Sadiq you are playing with fire and this will not end well. There is a difference between a little white lie and downright fraud. Really hope he gets his just deserts.

To equate getting Asthma with inner city congestion is nonsense.
If your child has asthma and it’s that big of a deal, move someone with better air quality.
The cost of living in London is far higher than most places including places in the countryside, so I don’t want to hear how that is unpractical because of cost.
If you own a house, house prices are much cheaper, if you rent, rent is much cheaper.
If you’re concerned about your child’s health, move, it’s a no brainer.

Climate Columnist Donnachadh McCarthy gave some misleading information. Asthma has been increasing markedly in a time period where air pollution has been falling so giving it a negative correlation. There is a positive correlation (no causal link) between various diseases and patient address near major roads however this could also be explained also by poorer people living near busy roads and some of the diseases have no clear connection with air quality. This is a contribution towards mortality due to other causes with only one person so far having this attributed on their death certificate. (This will probably increase as the issue become politicised). The actual air quality readings in London are below the legal thresholds with the exception of tube stations. So there is not a good case for ULEZ with respect to air quality but Donnachadh McCarthy can say anything if unchallenged.

    • @alanrobertson9790
      @alanrobertson9790 Рік тому

@@user-iv5ox7tq2l 1) "The assertion that asthma has been increasing while air pollution has been falling" Relevant information here.
      A) In the UK, there was a 33% increase in asthma deaths over a decade 2008-2018.
      B) Pollution including traffic pollution has been falling over that period. Ref Long-term trends in emissions of air pollutants Figure 1: Trends in annual emissions of particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), nitrogen oxides, ammonia, non-methane volatile organic compounds, and sulphur dioxide, 1970-2021 (1980-2021 for ammonia). gov.uk/government/statistics/emissions-of-air-pollutants.
      2) "as various factors beyond air quality can influence asthma rates". Yes indeed it must be something else, but the other factors need to be identified its not possible simply to blame traffic pollution as tends to be the case.
      3) "While distinguishing between correlation and causation is important, correlations can still point to associations that merit further investigation, even if a direct causal link is challenging to establish". Agreed but you cannot have it both ways. The 4k London/40k UK contributary deaths reports are widely quoted by ULEZ supporters even though these are correlations and of questionable methodology which I can go into if you like.
      4) "While socioeconomic factors could contribute to the positive correlation between diseases and living near major roads, it's also crucial to recognize that air pollution near major roads can have health effects regardless of residents' socioeconomic status". Agreed but you have to consider both factors rather than in isolation if you want to find out the disease outcome to road/pollution correlation.
      5) "health impacts might still occur at levels below those thresholds". The limits been set with regard to normal populations. If there is someone especially susceptible, particularly if they are ill from something else you may speculate that an even lower limit could have been beneficial. This would be an argument for setting all limits to zero but it is not done in this way because of the disproportionate costs. The value of life is not infinite. A practically flawed argument.
      6) A) "no strong case for Ultra Low Emission Zones (ULEZ) based on air quality" and B) "benefits of ULEZ policies in reducing vehicle emissions and improving overall environmental and public health" These are not separate arguments.
      7) "attributed on a death certificate, it's important to acknowledge the cumulative impact of air pollution on public health over time and potential lag effects in mortality reporting". This is not the explanation. Bad air quality has existed for decades. The explanation is that Doctors put the obvious cause of death, and the part of air pollution is not easily identified. (Except that with activist Doctors it will be!).
      8) "consider various viewpoints, scientific research, and the broader environmental and public health context is crucial for a well-rounded understanding of complex issues like air quality, pollution, and their health impacts". People say its complex when they can't win the argument! Have you noticed?

I agree that cars and car emissions have been underestimated so far as health is concerned so I am a bit divided about this.

According to poll data and the ULEZ Expansion consultation itself, Londoners are NOT in favor of ULEZ expansion (point raised at 1:04).
