Guy, are you sure it is Wieland Kuijken on the Viola da gamba? I don’t recognise him. Could it be Jaap ter Linden? And who is the lady, playing the other gamba?
      Who is the bass player?

@@k_b7341 You are wright! The Viola da Gamba player is Jaap ter Linden, not Wieland Kuijken... Here is the complete distribution:
Soprano: Mieke van der Sluis; Alto: René Jacobs; Tenor: Marius van Altena; Bass: Max van Egmond
Recorders: Frans Brüggen, Walter van Hauwe; Violas da gamba: Jaap ter Linden, Adelheid Clatt

@@richardmyron739 I don't agree with you. The Celloist is Anner Bylsma. Here is the comment of this video made by Walter Bitner: "There are many audio recordings and videos of Actus Tragicus available now, but this video made more than forty years ago was one of the first, is still one of the finest, and is of considerable historical significance. It is not exactly the same ensemble that made the audio recording included in Volume 26 of The Complete Cantatas recorded for Teldec, although many of the personnel are the same.
Some of the influential musicians involved in this video recording include not only 0:22 director Gustav Leonhardt (1928-2012 - leading pioneer of the historical performance movement). Is that Jaap ter Linden with a beard playing gamba at 0:29? The recorders at 0:49 pair Frans Brüggen (1934-2014), the most influential recorder player in history; and Walter van Hauwe (b. 1948) whose three-volume masterpiece The Modern Recorder Player is the best method for the instrument ever written (I spent many hours with these books in the 1990s and early 2000s). Note also 2:02 Ton Koopman (b. 1944), portativ organ and Anner Bylsma (1934-2019), cello. Decades later, Koopman directed this performance of Actus Tragicus which includes a few of the same musicians. The soloists all give remarkable performances here, and how young they are! 5:18 Marius van Altena (b. 1938), tenor; 7:05 Max von Egmond (b. 1936), bass 12:08 René Jacobs (b. 1946), alto; and 9:22 Mieke van der Sluis, soprano. The choir is superb - warm and supple - and sing with clear yet soft diction through Leonhardt’s gentle tempi. And finally, as if I haven’t given you enough reasons: Mieke’s green eye shadow!" This was evidently Leonhardt's first recording of this cantata. He recorded it again in 1979 or early 1980 for the cantata series.

Sorry, but Mieke van der Sluis is NOT a Bach singer and not surprisingly she isn't singing on the recording. @revaliensis I read somewhere that Leonhardt's conducting style was based on Bach's principles of conducting but how we know that for certain is down to conjecture. This is a superb upload and credit has to be given on digging this out. Sad to hear of Leonhardt's death, we have lost a truly great musician. I see Bruggen and van Hauwe and was shocked on how old Bruggen looks nowadays.

This piece is a funeral cantata - and in that period death was a frequent visitor. How many of his children did Bach lose? So for Christians the consolation was that death was the transition to God's glory - from our perspective maybe miserable but in that time quite understandable.

Why would you take the 2nd movement so slow? Its so incredibly more awe inducing and powerful at at least 20 bpm faster, in fact compared to the version i usually listen to (from an album of bach cantatas conducted by John Eliot Gardiner) this sounds pretty comical. lots o great musicians here though, the baritone soloist at the “ach herr” part is very very good. Its definitely no less alive than the other version, but perhaps that a salute more due to the incredibly economical and effective method bach applied to his composition.

I feel that the feeling and intonation is beatiful, its very plastic and the recorderplaying
is maybe the best you can find in my opinion bruggen is the best hm bruggen an Hauwe play toghether for a long time its not surprising that their unisonplaying sounds
so good, maybee can the sonatina in the begining be a little faster not so much.

While this is the first time I am able to tolerate M. v. Altena's voice, it is at the same time one of the best opportunities for understanding why R. Jacobs stopped singing and began conducting. It is almost unbearable to hear him here (worse than in recordings)! Don't get me wrong, it's a matter of fact that he is a great musician (still a singer, he could sit at the harpsichord and transpose almost at sight - would Herreweghe even try to read in key?), and technically, he was able to deal with fearce coloratura like few countertenors (listen to the first aria of Handel 's "Alessandro" /DHM, S. Kuijken conducting). But that timbre... What evil destiny condemned him to that (and then teach young A. Scholl)? But the man remains an example of honesty and professionalism, to the point of publicly admitting his dislike for his own voice - instead of going on while deaf early HIP fans would praise his singing no matter what (and he knew it! Read some comments here...).
    P. S. By the way, I took summer courses at a Palace here in Portugal, mainly with Max v. Egmond, but once with ter Linden and another with Bylsma. This reminds me of great times with talented young people and wonderful teachers and a pastoral setting to die for!

I never get tired to listen to this rendition of my favourite cantata. It's so authentic, so musical and soulful. Let alone the skill of the musicians.... I absolutely adore Max van Egmond. Leonhard concucts from within the music, very moving.

A true document which really flatters. The great pioneers unite for an, for that time, non plus ultra performance. The record is nearly 45 years old but shows us where we were at that time.
The great teachers unite to show us one more time what they learned from the sources.
