The ensemble Vox Luminis, led by Lionel Meunier, specialises in English, Italian and German repertoire from the 17th and early 18th century and is internationally acclaimed for its unique sound. A core of vocal soloists is supplemented, depending on the repertoire, with an extensive continuo, solo instruments or a complete orchestra.

Notes from Wikipedia: "Jesu, meine Freude is one of the few works by Bach for five vocal parts. It may have been composed for a funeral, but scholars have come to doubt a 1912 dating to a specific July 1723 funeral in Leipzig, a few months after Bach had moved to that town. [Musicologist and Bach scholar] Christoph Wolff suggested that the motet may have been composed for education in both choral singing and theology. Unique in its complex symmetrical structure juxtaposing hymn text and Bible text, the motet has been regarded as one of Bach's greatest achievements in the genre. It was the first of his motets to be recorded, in 1927."
For this live concert video, a matched pair of Sennheiser microphones in ORTF was placed in the center for a clear and transparent audio image along with five, 4K Sony and Panasonic video cameras.

Bachs Kantaten und Motetten auf solche Weise interpretiert zu hören klingt wunderbar - die Interpretation hat theologische Tiefe und die Stimmen in ihrer Klarheit und Schnörkellosigkeit rühren den Zuhörer zutiefst an. Vielen Dank!
Man bedenke, dass die Interpreten wohl eigentlich nicht deutschsprachig sind!
Einfach wunderbar gesungen mit tiefen Glaubensinhalt. Danke das habe ich hier oft in der Stadtkirche gesungen wie unser Probst Kramer noch lebte. Leider hat er uns zu früh verlassen aber es war Gottes Wille.Ich habe so viel gebetet aber immer den schwersten Satz gesagt nicht mein sondern Dein Wille geschehe. Dann hat Gott Ihn zu sich für himmlische Aufgaben zu sich gerufen. Wir und seine Familie sind befreundet er bleibt im Herzen. ❤️🙏AMEN

Bach's vocal works are exquisite, whether performed by a choir of hundreds and full orchestra, or here, with just one or two voices per part and a little continuo organ. But for me, this small ensemble version is sublime -- all the parts clearly expressed so that Bach's true genius can be heard, and each performer's voice can shine.

Agree except that Bach should never be sung by hundreds or with a full modern orchestra. It should only be played on period instruments and with the number of choir members Bach would have had available to him.
One of my favorite chorale/hymns by Bach. Well done. Jesus my Friend and Savior..indeed he is and I am in firm belief that J.S. Bach knew his savior very well.

Yeah, they're a Belgian ensemble, properly speaking -- funded by various entities in Wallonia, with offices in Brussels and just outside Namur, and in residence at the concert hall in Bruges. That said, in this lineup of singers I count exactly one Belgian national. (And among the regular members that aren't in this performance, I don't think there are any Belgians, either. Only two Frenchmen in this group, by the way.)
@@mwnyc3976 yes you are right. Lionel Meunier is Belgian. Thank you for correcting me on this point. But he is also former student of Hugo Reyne. So it is not so wrong to speak about him as a musician with French influence, culture and spirit.

When I was young I sang this motet in my university choir, I know it very well, and this is the best version I have heard in a long time. Wonderful voices, beautiful musicality and a lot of respect for the score. Congratulations! I will listen to it again many times.

Bach is very deceptive. His music is so pure it seems simple, but even his "practice" pieces he wrote for his students can be challenging. What an amazing talent.

I am particularly grateful for all the music VoM uploads to UA-cam because I have progressive multiple sclerosis which has left me paralyzed from the shoulders down and rendered me unable to work. That means I can neither get to concerts, or indeed afford them. While there is nothing which can replace being in person at a performance, watching and listening is a solid alternative. Seeing the things VoM uploads here brightens my life and are among the things which make it worth living rather than a thing to be tolerated and waited out. After 4 minutes I heard this was world top quality. For English speaking people German is somewhat difficult, but the pronunciation seems of high quality also. Musical expression and vocal performance were superb. Wonderful.

Zsuzsi can walk again, but the injusry was quite serious and painful. It was a great adventure, since Zsuzsi hurt herself on a hike in Yosemity National Park and got carried downhill into the valley by park rangers... we could write a book about those days, haha...

Lovely. Listening over and over again (modern form of an encore). Worth the wait.
It's also excellent from a recording point of view. I can easily make out every note of the inner voices, and it allows me to understand the piece more completely without even seeing the score or part books. Very well done on the part of everyone!
I don't have rock stars. I have classical stars, and since my love tends toward the baroque (especially when performed in an academically and historically informed way), it is people in this area of performance who are my stars. This is as good as it gets. Pure chocolate of the highest quality. Unlike chocolate, I can consume as much of this as I want without negatively impacting my health. There is no such thing as aural diabetes, obesity, stroke or heart disease.

A wonderful performance. Too often the motets are performed with a large vocal ensemble which overpowers the intricacy and intimacy of the music. Bravo!
