Marvin, I'm so glad you appreciated the hard work of The Ohio State University Marching Band, known to Buckeye fans as TBDBINL (The Best Damn Band in the Land). I grew up in Columbus, graduated from OSU, and was employed there for 30 years. The members of the band work extremely hard to perfect each show. If a leader of a specific section of the band sees weaknesses. they will drill their team after regular practice has ended. Students in the band must audition; they are graded on their work and receive a credit or two towards their degree requirements. They travel to some games, but not all. Just yesterday they were at Penn State for the 2022 game. If The Buckeyes go to a Bowl game, the band will go as well. I wish they traveled in the luxury the football team travels because they a representing the university just as much as the players. The band will typically attend several functions prior to game day, march in the bowl game parade, then perform at the game itself.
The Ohio State University Marching Band has 228 members. All of them play brass or percussion instruments, and it is the largest band of that type in the world. "Dotting the i" at the end of the Script Ohio is the highlight of a sousaphone player's career. I know a man who switched both his intended instrument and his intended university just to have the chance to dot the i. He was fortunate enough to do it twice.

Is that actually accurate? I really don’t think *every* sousaphone player gets that honor, but may be wrong. I thought it was a competition based thing and you had to earn it unless you’re a celebrity/guest dotting it

Had a roommate who was in the band ~25 years ago. He said the last word was "Zig" or maybe "Zieg" in honor of George Steinbrenner's wife, an OSU alum. They donated a lot of money to the band. For the non-OSU people here, the other fun part about the fight song at the end of script Ohio is that the only instrument playing is the sousaphone player who dots the "I". The quieter song at the ~11 minute mark is OSU's alma mater, Carmen Ohio.

To answer your question if the OSU Marching Band goes with the team to away games they do but typically only to 1 away game per year, maybe 2 when OSU plays up at M*chigan. When the band is on the field performing there are 192 members, 193 when you include the drum major. The total band size is 226 now. I believe they added an additional percussion member since I was in the band. If a more recent member / alumni of the OSUMB sees this comment, please correct me if I’m wrong. The first song the band was singing in the Script Ohio formation was “Buckeye Battle Cry”, 1 of 2 fight songs OSU has, the other is called “Fight the Team”. The second song that was being sung is called “Carmen Ohio”, the Ohio State alma mater.
Marvin, The pregame ends w the national anthem. The men running across the end zone were staff of Penn State. The football players would run out soon. It is an honor to dot the "i" in script Ohio. Hope u will watch other half time shows on UA-cam.
I am so glad you enjoyed the pregame! I would like to add a little comment. The stadium was enlarged in 2001. This project included lowering the level of the field. As a result the band ramp became significantly steeper. So now it is harder than it used to be for the band to descend the ramp at 180 beats per minute, but they still do it perfectly every time!
When the football team plays away games, the band goes along. Usually the half-time show is made up of visiting and home team's bands. Like in American baseball, visitors get the play first, and the home team's band goes last. It almost becomes like a "battle of the bands."
Two things to note:. 1) OSU's band plays at 180 beats per minute. All other marching bands are at 120; 2) the really impressive marching band formations are during the halftime shows. Watch those of your mind and eyes want blowing away.
3:20 The drum major goes backward and touches the Scarlett tuft(?) of his headgear to the Turf that the game will be played on....very spiritual....lol
What I love about the Ohio State Marching Band is that they are always completely in sync while marching and playing at an extremely fast pace which sounds like 180 beats per minute, and sometimes it looks like they reach 200. They are marching on their toes with no flat footed, rolling walk which is why they're able to pull the shows off as they can move quickly into and out of formations. They do all of this while being very good musicians which allows them to have unmatched, creative half-time shows. The tradition never changes which is also why they have outstanding alumni come back every year and they march together at an early season game. I was at the Fiesta Bowl back in 2003 when rude Miami University fans tried to engage them when they were marching in the Fiesta Bowl parade and they didn't ever acknowledge it or react to it. It looked like they were staring way ahead of them with stoic expressions. So professional and outstanding.
In case someone hasn’t answered this part, after they finish Script Ohio and the 4th or 5th year sousaphone member dots the i and bows to both sides the full band sings the chorus of the Fight Song except the sousaphone player player who dotted the i, that member plays a solo of their part. It’s hard to hear in the video due to the singing and how they have to mic the whole performance. The band itself is 228 members with 192 marching during the pregame routine, 195 during each halftime performance, and 36 alternates. Each halftime performance is unique for each game with up to 10 shows a year. For example they have 8 shows for the 2022 season,of which 5 came in consecutive weeks. 1 1/2 to 2 hours before kickoff the band holds a final rehearsal open to the public called The Skull Session which has a pep rally feel and includes a walk through of the football team as they walk from the Woody Hayes Athletic Center to the Stadium. Each of the festivities are recommended must watch if you ever go to a game, as well as tailgating outside the stadium.
Ok so, Some few things about your questions is when the “boss” Comes out which is the drum major, and they play the Buckeye Battle Cry. Then the PSU, Then across the field, Script Ohio, Then Battle Cry again with the fans and the Band, Across the field, Battle cry, then the Team comes out.
They sing the buckeye battle cry and the state song of Ohio is beautiful Ohio and where you said dramatic music and they were in the huge Ohio (script Ohio) the was the alma mater Carmen Ohio
That was the fight song „Buckeye Battle Cry“, followed by the alma mater. They began with the fight song, then made PSU and played the Penn State fight song.
Marvin, this goes back fifty years that I know of. There is no other marching band that can come close to this. These people work all year, through any weather, and for miles and miles on end, all the while playing music with a precise pitch to go along for the ride. So let us top it all off with perfectly pressed uniforms every game everywhere. There are 225 people each exactly as the other and each depending on the other like a crew on a ship.
It is the Ohio State fight song: Drive, drive on down that field Men of the scarlett and gray Don't let them thru that line We're gonna win this game today Come, on Ohio. Smash Thru to Victory We'll cheer you as you go Our honor defend For we'll fight to the end for old Ohio
Buckeye Battle Cry In old Ohio there’s a team That’s known thru-out the land; Eleven warriors, brave and bold, Whose fame will ever stand. The most famous marching routine in college sports, Script Ohio. The sousa phone [tuba] player dots the "i". The "fight song" and then the Alma Mater [school anthem].
THE Ohio State Marching Band sang “Buckeye Battle Cry” at the end of Script Ohio (same song as played when they made their initial March downfield) followed by the Alma Mater, Carmen Ohio.
I know in High school the band had it's bus and the team had their bus to travel to the away game... but generally they are going to another STATE, so MAYBE they have a team plane/flight and a Band flight? Not sure, they might just buy out enough seats on commercial flights... not suire. Any Buckeye fan knows the "salute". When you see other Buckeye fans out and about, you greet each other with one calling out OH. The other person replies with, IO. A little trivia. Ohio State football has not had losing records in back to back seasons for nearly a century, 1922-1924.
When the band first marches down the field after the Ramp Entrance the crowd sings "Buckeye Battle Cry" but at the end of Script Ohio, the crowd goes silent and only the band sings. Edit: Ohio State's full roster is 105 players. They all dress for home games (jersey numbers are only two digits so some are duplicated; those that are have one of the players on offense and the other on defense) but not all get to go to away games.
@@mattswaggy7804 Usually only for the first couple games of the season, then they figure it out. At least most of them do. Listen to the video again, the difference is clear.
There are videos about 30 minutes in length of the competition to be the head drum major from 2016 and 2017 seasons. Baton twirling skills and pregame dance moves are judged to determine the winner. The amount of practice these students do for the honor of just being in the band without pay is huge.
The song you heard the band singing was OSU's fight song, if you noticed when they formed the "PSU" they played their fight song in tribute. Nearly every school in U.S.A. has a fight song including High School which is played before games and after a big score in the game. This tradition goes wwaaayyy back. I believe the association of sports with our schooling is something that is very different than in Europe. It is how our athletes progress to higher levels and eventually to the professional leagues for many sports. Whereas other countries they tend to start off in leagues, separate from their schooling.
Yes they travel with the team but it's usely the Homeland that takes the feild at halftime they will just set up and play certain songs when the team dose something of note

The first song the band was singing in the Script Ohio formation was “Buckeye Battle Cry”, 1 of 2 fight songs OSU has, the other is called “Fight the Team”. The second song that was being sung is called “Carmen Ohio”, the Ohio State alma mater.
Thank ypu🙌🙌
Idk if he noticed but at 9:20 they all sing the buckeye battle cry while just the I dotter plays
3:20 The drum major goes backward and touches the Scarlett tuft(?) of his headgear to the Turf that the game will be played on....very spiritual....lol
The song they sing during the script Ohio is called the buckeye battle cry, afterwards it is the OSU Alma Mater
Script Ohio may be the most famous band formation of all.
Also look at Military Salute 2021 from West Virginia University Marching Band. It is awesome how bands can March to an awesome formation.
12:10. That's called the O - Block, it spells ohio but it's also the formation for the team to come out through.
2:36 They are forming the Lines, they go from A to K I believe.
One of the greatest traditions in college football
That was the fight song „Buckeye Battle Cry“, followed by the alma mater. They began with the fight song, then made PSU and played the Penn State fight song.
Marvin, this goes back fifty years that I know of. There is no other marching band that can come close to this. These people work all year, through any weather, and for miles and miles on end, all the while playing music with a precise pitch to go along for the ride. So let us top it all off with perfectly pressed uniforms every game everywhere. There are 225 people each exactly as the other and each depending on the other like a crew on a ship.
It is the Ohio State fight song:
Drive, drive on down that field
Men of the scarlett and gray
Don't let them thru that line
We're gonna win this game today
Come, on Ohio.
Smash Thru to Victory
We'll cheer you as you go
Our honor defend
For we'll fight to the end for old Ohio
Hi Marvin, just saw your channel today, as a Buckeye fan appreciate the video and have subscribed, thanks
Buckeye Battle Cry
In old Ohio there’s a team
That’s known thru-out the land;
Eleven warriors, brave and bold,
Whose fame will ever stand.
And when the ball goes over,
Our cheers will reach the sky,
Ohio field will hear again
The Buckeye Battle Cry-
Drive! Drive on down the field,
Men of the scarlet and gray;
Don’t let them thru that line,
We have to win this game today,
Come on, Ohio!
Smash through to victory.
We cheer you as you go:
Our honor defend
So we’ll fight to the end for O-hi-o.
9:26 That is the Ohio State Buckeyes fight song.
The most famous marching routine in college sports, Script Ohio. The sousa phone [tuba] player dots the "i". The "fight song" and then the Alma Mater [school anthem].
13:00 they are chanting "Block that Kick"
THE Ohio State Marching Band sang “Buckeye Battle Cry” at the end of Script Ohio (same song as played when they made their initial March downfield) followed by the Alma Mater, Carmen Ohio.
The Drum Major escorting the sousaphone player to "dot the eye" @ 08:40 is a huge honor, and is sometimes reserved for special guests
The last song The Band Played with Carmen Ohio it is the OSU alma mater
I know in High school the band had it's bus and the team had their bus to travel to the away game... but generally they are going to another STATE, so MAYBE they have a team plane/flight and a Band flight? Not sure, they might just buy out enough seats on commercial flights... not suire.
Carmen Ohio
Oh come let's sing Ohio's praise
And songs to Alma Mater raise
While our hearts rebounding thrill
With joy which death alone can still
Summer's heat or winter's cold
The seasons pass the years will roll
Time and change will surely (truly) show
How firm thy friendship ... OHIO!
These jolly days of priceless worth
By far the gladdest days on earth
Soon will pass and we not know
How dearly we love Ohio
We should strive to keep thy name
Of fair repute and spotless fame
So in college halls we'll grow
And love thee better ... OHIO!
Though age may dim our mem'ry's store
We'll think of happy days of yore
True to friend and frank to foe
As sturdy sons of Ohio
If on seas of care we roll
Neath blackened sky or barren shoal
Thoughts of thee bid darkness go
Dear Alma Mater...OHIO!
Any Buckeye fan knows the "salute". When you see other Buckeye fans out and about, you greet each other with one calling out OH. The other person replies with, IO.
A little trivia. Ohio State football has not had losing records in back to back seasons for nearly a century, 1922-1924.
9:34 It was the Buckeye Battle Cry
When the band first marches down the field after the Ramp Entrance the crowd sings "Buckeye Battle Cry" but at the end of Script Ohio, the crowd goes silent and only the band sings.
Edit: Ohio State's full roster is 105 players. They all dress for home games (jersey numbers are only two digits so some are duplicated; those that are have one of the players on offense and the other on defense) but not all get to go to away games.
No the fans sing along then too
@@mattswaggy7804 Usually only for the first couple games of the season, then they figure it out.
I'm proud to say, I'm from Ohio...
We have the Best Damn Band Of The Land!!!

buckeye battle cry is what the were singing at the end of script Ohio. then they went into their alma malter, Carmen Ohio.
Watch one of the many halftime shows from The Ohio State University. You think pregame is impressive. You will be blown away by the halftime show.
the song gent song was our fight song. and when ohio state plays away they still bring the band and do a pregame it’s just a shorten version
I'm a Buckeye! I love how they do the opponent's logo on their side at the beginning. Script Ohio is my favorite. It never ceases to amaze me!
They travel in a bus caravan usually, If it is something like a Sugar Bowl or Rose Bowl, they fly. They don't fly to Iowa, they bus.
Hello Marvin, just came upon your channel , hit the sub , always nice to see folks outside of the USA enjoy a small part of our culture . I'm an older guy lived all my life in Columbus and have loved the Buckeyes since i was a kid . even as a kids when few games where on TV , we'd sit around the radio and live or die by every play . lol , The band did a show at Wembley in London for the NFL in 2015 you might enjoy . O - H - ? - ? is the chant you here on any OSU video.
Hey Paul, thank you!
Greetings

At away games the band does a variation of floating ohio with a double script ohio since not every field is built like the shoe
They are singing the fight song followed by Carmen Ohio, the schools anthem.
I lived in Columbus, OH, during the Woody Hayes days of the 1970s.
The "fight -win" attitude remains the same.

It's Drive, Drive Down the Field, OSU's football fight song. Each college has one. Last was the OSU alma mater.. The university's song. 😊
Drive drive on down the field
Men of Scarlet and Gray

Those are the lyrics even everybody is singing.
The band always goes to the away games but doesn’t always perform, they play in the stands and support the team though, a good suggestion is watching blue devils 2017 or 2022, they are crazy professional bands and are the step up from this
The last song was the school Alma Mater, "Carmen Ohio", well, the first verse.....
Oh come let's sing Ohio's praise

I was at this game! Best atmosphere to watch a football game
Yes they do go with them
Proud of m alma mater...they are singing our "fight song". The last song is called Carmen Ohio. GO BUCKEYES!!!!!
The spartan marching band and michigan marching band did a combined half time show for Halloween. You should definitely give it a watch. There were over 600 of us!
Those are the words to the fight song.
I’m from Texas and I love all the big TEXAS college marching bands but I really like those OHIO Marching BUCKEYES!!
They were singing their fight song. Every university has a fight song and an alma mater (school song) you should look up top college fight songs. The most iconic include Notre dame, university of Texas, USC, AND Michigan state.

They are singing the fight song, and then the slower song is known as "Carmen Ohio."
This is the school "fight" song they are playing during and right after the "OHIO" is formed.
Fight the team across the field
Show them Ohio's here,
Set the earth reverberating
With a mighty cheer,
Rah! Rah! Rah!
Hit them hard and see how they fall,
Never let that team get the ball,
Hail, hail, the gang's all here,
So let's win that old conference now.

You are so wonderful I love your reaction. My grandmother was from Deutschland. Danka ...go Bucks! Study American college football a bit more ...Mazel tav!
Marvin : PSU refers to Pennsylvania state university also known as the nittany lions
This is so funny at 5:10 because I know Script Ohio is next....lol.
The Ohio State Alma Mater!!❤❤
The Crowd knows the songs by heart, really by Heart.....lol
Hey Marvin please react to some of the OSU halftime shows which are world famous... especially the TOP GUN show (which Tom Cruise himself tweeted about and sent presents and tickets for all to his new premier movie!)..Jurassic Park show is cool and Michael Jackson tribute is worthy if watching as well! So nice to see other countries involved and appreciating what these kids do bc it takes hours and hours of preparation. Cheers from Buckeye Nation!
The band and fans sing the fight song and then Carmen, Ohio the alma mater.
Aaaahh🙌🙌great song sounds great
The chants at 13:10 were F**** Penn State, sounds like coming from our North Block O Section.
TBDBITL(The Best Damn Band In The Land) travels with the team on the road just like the rest of us in Buckeye Nation.
wait for the Drum Major 😁
The difference between said fans and Europe fans, is that Europeans sing in unison and together.
It would be great to see you do a reaction of the Penn State Blue Band’s pregame show as well
Some other good bands as well but nobody gets close to the halftime stuff OSU does and script Ohio
@@briancrawford69 ok, but the thing is I’m not in the Ohio State band

The part where they spelled Ohio is called “ script Ohio”. It is the staple of all of college football.
They were singing the school song.
Buckeye Battle Cry, then Carmen Ohio
You don't have to be there before the game, you want to be there before the game. Get some Hot Chocolate and Hot Dogs....lol
TBDBITL...the best damn band in the land
As the son of a German immigrant I figured you wouldn't be too impressed by script ohio. Figured it would just be like "yes, very efficient and sensible." XD
Watch the Rush tribute
The Ohio State Marching Band is also and equally known as “The Best Damn Band in the Land”!
O- H- !!
I-O!!!!! GO BUCKS!!!!
Video does not capture the sights and sound, in person when the band starts down the field, hearts race, 100 thousand cheer, you can feel the percussion, I have seen tears. You gotta be there.
If you want to see a real show Goggle Ohio State Quad Script OHIO. The band was singing the fight song 1st. 2nd song was the alma mater school song.
The I they put a dot above it
just a tip, don't talk when they finish script ohio, as they chant the buckeye battle cry (1of 2 fight songs used by ohio state). thats, like, the highest level of sacrilege in collegiate sports: talking during the fight song. 😅
It's the school fight song
Every university has a school song. That was OSU s.
This is the half time show
