Thanks for sharing .I have just looked at my past very sad ,but I was thankful to my husband and his Naval career for a good life 🙏 and the people we met
I lived there 1980 till 1986 our first flat was on nimrod the congreat jungle love it then moved to st Nicholas drive then 2 court number 2 loved my life then very happy being a sailor wife and mum .
When we returned from Singapore we lived in Williams Close and then moved to 7 Court 2. My memories of the estate itself as it relates to playing are fairly happy ones where I would be out cycling and climbing, running and laughing with other children. Back in those days home time was tea time was just before dusk and seeing it all here is bitter sweet. I hadn't appreciated how much greenery there was in and around the estate at the time. None of us do when we are young. I used to take my bike and ride around all day. I have a lovely scar still to this day on my chin where I was injured doing a handstand on my bicycle saddle whilst going down the overhead bridge from the NAAFI (no longer there). I thought I would be a gymnast or an acrobat back then 😂😂😂😂
Browndowns! I used to love that place! Used to go swimming in the murky waters with my cousins and siblings, jumping off the bridge and those rotten old little boats/canoes. Then down to the precinct with my Nan she would take us to the sweet shop for a pick and mix! NOSTALGIA!
We lived in Old Rowner (3 Marles Close) in the 70s when hubby was at HMS Collingwood. Used to love visits to the NAAFI for cheap groceries. Our local was the Green Dragon, which I believe is still open. Happy days.
@@iTzxPGamez we visited a few years ago and had a drink in the pub. Rowner doesn't look the same though. Our flat has been joined to, what was, the upstairs flat and is now a house.
@trinityleigh8765 wow what a coincidence! As a flat it was was big so combined with the upstairs flat it must've been massive. Was it still naval when you lived there?
I lived here in my early 20s - my first job was at Gosport Health Centre - happy days ,lovely neighbours - and plenty of open space / seaside just down the road - bliss!
Used to love the naffi tea bags, god they were nice. Lived in court 17 for a few years then on to sept on close, rowner rec , the prevent , brown down and the wild grounds. Excellent childhood.
Everyone I know who lived on this Estate, especially when it was a Naval Estate always talk about the Naafi teabags in their brown and yellow boxes...best cuppa going.
Wow. That was a good watch. Moved away at 16 (1988/89). Lived in Savage close for a number of years, firstly in the flats then to 88. Then moved to the courts. Loved the togetherness we had there. Went back a few years ago, but just didn't recognise it. Thanks for this video.
I really enjoyed watching the video! I remember the estate being built way back in late 60's, going to Siskin School (I lost my signet ring on the school field) and learning to swim in the outside pool by the school. Happy, happy days !!
I grew up in rowner lived in savage close then Gould close. It was 1971 to 1980 when my dad retired from the navy and we moved back up to the northeast where my mam and dad are from. I loved my time there, happy times , I went to brune park school and would go fishing at brockhurst fort , sad to see what’s happened to it but time moves on.
I was born at home in Rowner Biddlecombe close and Carless Close. We lived there from 73-89. It was an amazing place to grow up whilst my dad was in the navy.
@@hounslowparks2469 i too lived in carless close from 72-77, cant remember much about it as i was 5 when i moved back to s.wales...my father was also was in the navy and was chief petty officer on the hms birmingham.
@@hounslowparks2469 I lived at 1 Biddlecombe Close and a short stint in Carless Close when they refurbed the housing estate during the same time!. Very happy memories of those days.
I was postman in the area in late 60s, there was nothing wrong with the estate until the Navy moved out and the trash moved in. Only people make a slum.
@@allan1951 well Mr ex postman, thankfully all the trash have now vacated the estate and we now have a clean, modern looking estate where people are proud to call home. The name Rowner Estate used to put the fear of God into anyone waiting to be housed, now there is a waiting list as long as your arm there, and people are buying properties there like nobodies business. So now the veil of being the slum estate has been lifted, the concrete jungle just a distant memory, nice new shops, lots if new housing, lots of green spaces, trees everywhere, I think you need to re-visit the estate and see for yourself how much it has changed. I personally have lived on this estate since 1976, through the Navy time's, then into Council hands, and now into housing associations and private ownership, so I've seen all the changes, some good, some not so good, but goes for any housing estate /development, And I've driven around London hundreds of times being a HGV driver(retired), and some of those estates you wouldn't want to walk around (especially after dark).
I used to be proud of it back before it got ruined to the crappy horrible modern rubbish it is now. Rowner was never the problem sure it had rough people rough areas but where doesn't. The idiots in charge can refurb and rebuild but it won't change anything just make it ugly. I for one loved the concrete jungle and miss it every single day its how I grew up. I'd happily demolish the disgrace it is now and have the old estate rebuilt back to its former glory
