    54! Grown-ass man! Ex-Navy.
I run 6 days a week, strength train on 4 of those days as well. I eat clean 90% of the time and fast daily - 14+ hours.
I’m also raising two of my grandkids (4/5 years old) with my wife…showing them the way as well.
I feel like a machine and have never felt this good.
    Age is only a number.
I feel blessed to look and feel this good!
    Thanks for the extra motivation!

I like the point about not worrying about PR. It's unrealistic to expect to keep getting stronger and faster over your life. Just doing the best you can at that stage of your life.

Exactly, I pushed myself for an 8.15 min mile which is great. But beating that is incredibly hard. Im not running a race so there’s no need for me to do that.
I also tried to push myself with a new max weight and ended up hurting myself. If you’re not being paid to be impressive then PRs aren’t worth it.

Pat, I could not agree more with your assessment. I'm 57 about to turn 58. I've been training pretty much all my life. I focus on intensity, heart rate zones, diet, strength & flexibility. A typical workout may consist of a tire flip, followed by inch and a half battle rope, jump rope, some type of core movement that will recruit abs. Typically 4 to 5 movements are completed within an interval time of 4 to 5 minutes, and then a 45 second rest. I also start my day with a liter of water for hydration like yourself and simple black coffee. My first meal will be around noon time and the final meal at about 6 PM. I consistently track my labs specifically hemoglobin A1c, free testosterone, and IGF. I take no medication for high blood pressure or cholesterol. With regard to supplementation I keep things very simple, at this point I don't need anything ( just clean nutritious food). I appreciate you posting this kind of information for people specifically men in their 50s. I appreciate any information that anyone might have and I hope that my information can help someone.

Great stuff Pat! I recently turned 50 and what I have learned through this process of aging, staying fit and being blessed with fitness, is the utmost importance of progressively WARMING UP. I also have a weekly system, but each day now and for the past several years, requires a MANDATORY 30-minute progressive warmup prior to starting any workout. This is the key to avoiding injury, post 50... for me anyway.

I'm in pretty good shape at 56. I've realized, however, that all the injuries I sustained as a younger man - lacrosse, football, wrestling, neck and back injuries in college - follow into my mature years. I have to maintain a positive attitude about staying fit, healthy, and tough, and not let the past drag at me with its resistance. It's not easy and it does take more work as a man closer to 100 than 0. Unless completely broken by an unforeseeable health problem, I will not stop. I can see how some might be overturned as the burdens that accumulate continue to weigh at them. I also think negative habits (too many beers, donuts, and pizza) take their toll if you are not careful. Attitude is 90% of the battle.

    Just turned 60.
I’ve been an active martial arts (Hayashi Ha Shito-Ryu) practitioner for 41 years.
And yes, agreed, your forties can be your strongest years.
Can I do round house kicks to the head of a 6’5” opponent in the ring anymore?
    No.
But I can do powerful low Muai Thai kicks all day to the knees.
Three days a week I find a nice 60 minute up hill hike, paddle board/lake swim, yoga and electric bike.
    Just keep moving.

For me finding the time to do ANYTHING related to working out/fitness is a bigger issue than motivation. With age comes more responsibilities. Born in 1969, started regular training in 1983 - before that no gym would let me - joined the Swiss Army (the branch doesn't matter) 1987 - hard times in my 30s made me mutate into a couch potato. At the beginning of my 40s total reboot, burning the past and since then 2 hours, 6x a week hard workout in the gym, trekking, canoeing, bushcraft - at 53 in much better physical and mental shape than at 35. You can go astray - If you want to get back on track , you can do it.
    No excuses.

Though I’m in pretty damn good shape for a 69 year old, it’s extremely hard to get motivated to hit the weights and run the trails .Great advice as far as not going for PRs anymore. I find myself stuck on always upping the weight. I wound up tearing my labrum last fall when I incorporated pulling my ATV connected to a rope up my steep driveway from a seated position . I found my body doesn’t tolerate lifting, pushing and pulling 600 pounds anymore. Old habits die slow and hard. Ouch ! 💥

Bro I just hit 40 and I have been panicking. But I do work out every single day and I train Boxing and Escrima. I honestly do feel like Im in the best shape of my life except my back issues. Thats what keeps me out of BJJ, it goes out when I get in to a heavy push/pull situation sometimes. Been trying to figure out how to fix that so I can get back to feel good and strong. You are a HUGE inspiration!

I’m 59 in December. At 47 I did my first Ironman distance race. 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile swim. Time was 11h:26 minutes. 24 total races. Definitely was wrecking my body so I gave it up. Went back to resistance training with boxing mixed in for cardio. I agree! It’s about longevity and being a role model for my son who is 4 th generation Navy. “ If you don’t listen to your body whisper. One day you for sure hear it scream!” Semper Fortis.
