The greatest blues rock player to ever put on a Strat and this footage only confirms the truth of the matter! In fact the whole band is friggin awesome!
Ok, so, I just accidentally stumbled onto this out of nowhere having never heard of this band somehow, and I gotta say... I absolutely love this! How have I never heard of this band?!
Rory Gallagher was the first rock concert I ever attended. It was at Belfast's Ulster Hall back in 1974 or 75. The fans went nuts over him. This is the first time I have seen this video clip but I remember it was on the Taste album called, "On the Boards". Every track was good on that one!
the amount of good/great rock/bands/rock guitarists of this era is astounding - the proof is so many never made it commercially while many others did, so it wasn't for lack of recording contracts, just so much great music, much got lost in the greatness/popularity of others.
This is heart & soul, what a freaking talent! They don't need stupid dancers, lame big screens nor a thousand sorry asses light bulbs hanging down the cieling to drag you to their mood or keep you interested. Rory's the best.
Just such a raw performance! All three putting in so much soul, I always loved Rory's sound that He got from that strat!! Like no other, So sorry to see Him go. 😢
i was in a tent on the hill, but came down to the arena on the saturday for this. i have been trawling my memory this weekend for recollections of the festival ,and it sounds cliched but it seems so fresh in my memory still.friends a bit younger than me are so keen to hear about it too, which i appreciate.
That's what I admired in him. He didn't have a pretentious bone in his body. Came on wearing working man cloths, plugged into a club amp and rocked out. He was the real deal.
Remember The Stones wanted Rory to join the group where he would have had fame and fortune but Rory turned them down,im glad he did it would have been a waste of his talents
I know I'm showing my age but I remember this gig like it was yesterday. It was one of the highlights of the festival. I seem to remember him playing some very tasty slide as well on a battered Telecaster.
ua-cam.com/video/Y0usqWjpqt0/v-deo.html Yeah there's also footage of that around on UA-cam! Did you see Hendrix play too then? Heard rory blew him out of the water with his set
What a great video...I first heard him in 1974, I was only 8 back then...He was HUGE in France, he'd often come to Paris and other locations sometimes twice the same year and his shows lasted 3 hours plus...Those were the days... :) :) :)
Right from the start after he left the dance bands behind, he was something special. The two taste albums are astonishing. Even though he has been dead for nearly 30 years. We still have his musical legacy.
I played this song myself on guitar long time ago. I admired Rory so much. What a talent, had to go much too early! You can hear how he seeks the feedback sound which is the essence of blues/rock in my opinion!
Stunned. I've been a fan for a long time, but not as early as I would wish. Have a taste album, but live, the intensity is MAXIMUM!. Now I feel it would changed my life if I'd seen him back in the day, when I was 14.
Brian May stated that Rory Gallagher is the person who turned him onto and the reason why he's played Vox AC30 combo amps throughout Brian's legendary career. We can almost thank Rory for helping Brian find his iconic tone and being such an influence on Brian as a guitarist, who in turn influenced thousands of guitarists over the years himself. I feel like Rory doesn't get the recognition he deserves, and I only discovered him and became a fan of him through Brian May, constantly talking about Rory over the years.❤🎸🇮🇪🍀
lewisheapy I read that Rory had a very high ph content in his sweat and that it almost acted like paint thinner on the finish. May have had something to do with his fondness of alcohol, which unfortunately led to his untimely demise
I read somewhere that his guitar was stolen at one point, and whoever stole it just dumped it and it was found outdoors having been exposed to sun and rain which ruined the finish but fortunately didn't ruin the guitar
Rory was best heard in small town halls or beat club environments. Then his soulfulness came out of his guitar so emotionally that you felt his sufferings.....wiped anyone off the floor with his blues guitar. Clapton, Hendrix, Townshend , Page couldn't hold a candle to him. His fabled Stratocaster was worn down to the bare wood. Thanks for posting this gem.
So True! I once him in PORTLAND Oregon at THE WRECK OF THE HESPRUS, a large hall. He also played At the Portland Paramount a few times this was mid 70,s
@@ZEP0034 Rory was very self critical, and he believed most of his contemporaries were superior to him. I love Zeppelin, and I would place most of their LPs in my all-time top 20, but if I listen to/watch Rory these days, I have to say that, live, he was superior to Page. Page has had his moments but he has always been very inconsistent, and you won't find many official live Zeppelin gigs that weren't sweetened in the studio. There are many unofficial recordings of Page live, which, I'm saddened to say, are pretty poor. At the ARMS concerts he was really quite appalling. I'm just a bit too young to have seen Zep live, but I did see Page with The Firm at The Hammersmith Odeon (Apollo now, I think). He was fine, but apart from Dazed and Confused, there was nothing to compare his playing with e.g., The Song Remains The Same concerts or The Albert Hall in 1970. I am yet to find a poor live example of Rory, but, sadly, I have never seen a post-Zeppelin Page do anything very impressive. When he's guested with bands over the years you'd expect him to really go for it, but most of the time he plays the riff, a bit of rhythm, and looks a bit lost. If you know of any good post-Zepp performances please share.
@@daevpaeldruid8200 he was nowhere near superior to Page. Nobody had the depth of Led Zeppelin. Rory has good songs but Led Zeppelin had 8 number 1 albums. Every album they did was better than anyone else. Success is what counts and Anyone into Rock would know Zep ruled the 70s. I'm not trying to compare them because they're both excellent but the best was Zeppelin fact. Type in best guitarists and Page is top 3 in every public poll. He and most stars had them bit at his best Page was the best alive.
@@ZEP0034 I don't think record sales are a mark of success in music. Just look at the shite that has sold millions, particularly this century. Whether or not you prefer one thing to another is a matter of 'taste', but I can tell you for a fact that when it came to playing live, consistently, Rory was technically a far better performer. I agree that Page at his best was one of the very best, not forgetting that when Zepp had become very popular, Hendrix was still alive, Peter Green still had his marbles, just about, and many excellent players had evolved from blues-rock and psychedelia into rock, prog-rock, jazz-fusion, etc. (Jeff Beck, David Gilmour and Steve Howe being prime examples, all of whom have also been consistently superb playing live, to this day.). As a studio musician/producer Page is second to none, but he has not consistently translated that into playing live. He doesn't travel well, and If he didn't suffer so much with fatigue, and hadn't been such a big drug user, it may have been a different story.
this is inspired despite the negative comments. i welcome anyone who is so professional and educated to get up and do a better rendition. this is called playing the guitar not sticking to modes phrases pentatonics etc but playing the hell out of it and i for one salute that man. drinking was his prerogative but so was living to play and to be alive for what he loved.
Have read from band members he wasn't much of a drinker his apparent demise was due to being a hypochondriac and he took way too much paracetemol which damaged his liver. I just wish he was still with us.
Thanks Paul. I think this was the first day of the Festival, so the crowds were still gathering. It was an amazing experience. Chaotic by present day standards, but hey, I also saw Hendrix play live later (next day ?) at night with a full crowd-unforgettable.
Taste headlined the Inverness Festival of Blues & Progressive Music in the same year. A photograph of me throwing a peace sign in the air while Rory was playing appeared in the national press the following Monday but edited so that it looked as if I was totally naked. Another blues band were second top of the bill, Savoy Brown.
I saw a documentary about him, and the music store owner that sold him his first guitar said he was constantly buying strings. At first they thought something was wrong with the guitar causing the strings to break; but they finally realized that Rory was practicing/ playing so much that he wore them out fast. Such a great story.
Taste was a reel super group. I've never seen them playing live. But I was lucky when my cousins got me a ticket for the only Rory Gallagher's concert, mid seventies, in Oporto, Portugal. What a fine guitar player, both acoustic and electric.

In Joe Perry's autobiography, Joe tells how Gallagher blew Aerosmith off the stage at an early gig.
@@TheSanityInspector who's aerosmith?
Over the past few years I have been amazed by the live footage of Rory Gallagher at the Isle of Wight. Damn could Rory play or what!
The greatest blues rock player to ever put on a Strat and this footage only confirms the truth of the matter! In fact the whole band is friggin awesome!
Saw him in long beach and even as a stoned out little surf kid i knew this man was something special.Huge fan ever since....bit of a muse.RIP RORY.
Even back then, his strat was beat up and worn.
What a guy!❤
He played it for 50 years in just 7 years :)
I saw Rory in 1980 in Marseille France, Eliot Murphy made the first part of the show. He began with the son titled follow me... it was unbelievable !
Ok, so, I just accidentally stumbled onto this out of nowhere having never heard of this band somehow, and I gotta say... I absolutely love this! How have I never heard of this band?!
Just get the albums
Hawkwind had a dancer...
I also saw Taste in Vancouver in 1969 , this time with Delaney and Bonnie and Blind Faith , great show !
wow !
Never saw a man who cared less about his own career playing was all he cared about that's how you get to be the best
That's what I admired in him. He didn't have a pretentious bone in his body. Came on wearing working man cloths, plugged into a club amp and rocked out. He was the real deal.
Rory and Roy Buchanan as well.
Remember The Stones wanted Rory to join the group where he would have had fame and fortune but Rory turned them down,im glad he did it would have been a waste of his talents
I know I'm showing my age but I remember this gig like it was yesterday. It was one of the highlights of the festival. I seem to remember him playing some very tasty slide as well on a battered Telecaster.
ua-cam.com/video/Y0usqWjpqt0/v-deo.html
Yeah there's also footage of that around on UA-cam!
The amount of feeling is bizarrely different from today's music.
One of the greatest guitar performances ever... bar none!
This is the most unbelievable thing I have ever seen.
Were you able to do his type of bending and vibrato? I don't think I could imitate. Those are what makes this performance stand out.
Stunned. I've been a fan for a long time, but not as early as I would wish. Have a taste album, but live, the intensity is MAXIMUM!. Now I feel it would changed my life if I'd seen him back in the day, when I was 14.
Saw Rory in 87 in Glasgow, greatest guitarist who ever lived, bar none
Brian May stated that Rory Gallagher is the person who turned him onto and the reason why he's played Vox AC30 combo amps throughout Brian's legendary career. We can almost thank Rory for helping Brian find his iconic tone and being such an influence on Brian as a guitarist, who in turn influenced thousands of guitarists over the years himself. I feel like Rory doesn't get the recognition he deserves, and I only discovered him and became a fan of him through Brian May, constantly talking about Rory over the years.❤🎸🇮🇪🍀
A true musician,a master on guitar and true to the blues.
R🕯P🎸🎙🙏
THE PASSION HE PLAYS WITH IS EVERYTHING.
passion, indeed, married to talent.
I was there watching this performance. The sound on this video is way better than it was on the day. Keep your eyes open for me😎
Ever since I bought the album Blueprint in 1972 I have been amazed by this Irishman!Total badassery on guitar!
Happy birthday 🎂rory.
You are missed 😢
We love you.💜
The strat is only 9 years old at this point! Great footage..
lewisheapy I read that Rory had a very high ph content in his sweat and that it almost acted like paint thinner on the finish. May have had something to do with his fondness of alcohol, which unfortunately led to his untimely demise
I think his playing with jackets on and long sleeved shirts helped along the way lol
I read somewhere that his guitar was stolen at one point, and whoever stole it just dumped it and it was found outdoors having been exposed to sun and rain which ruined the finish but fortunately didn't ruin the guitar
lewisheapy amazing video of a rock god and his legendary 1961 guitar.
1970…. The year I was born… Love this live raw vintage stuff… Wish he were still with us…. Seriously Blows!
Zeppelin and Page were the best Rory would admit that simple.
Well... he was Irish, after all.
Have read from band members he wasn't much of a drinker his apparent demise was due to being a hypochondriac and he took way too much paracetemol which damaged his liver. I just wish he was still with us.
307 comments to date, not one negative comment here.
@@j.o.1516 Spot on. Unfortunately not many people are aware of this.
Thanks Paul.
I think this was the first day of the Festival, so the crowds were still gathering.
It was an amazing experience. Chaotic by present day standards, but hey, I also saw Hendrix play live later (next day ?) at night with a full crowd-unforgettable.
The best quitar player at his best . Amazing!!!!!!
The drummer is on it too!
I went to Isle of Wight with a friend on my little Fiat from Italy and enjoyed music and Rory mostly. Much better than other named musicians
Rory's last album was just as good as his first.Very few can lay claim to that. R.I.P
And this was Taste's last gig. They all knew they were breaking up and they came out and killed it.
Just an AC30 sitting over two chairs, fully cranked, and a beat up Strat.
And a treble booster ;)
The business Rafael, the business.
Along with a guy named Rory Gallagher himself
@@electric-lee144 I thought that was obvious
I saw a documentary about him, and the music store owner that sold him his first guitar said he was constantly buying strings. At first they thought something was wrong with the guitar causing the strings to break; but they finally realized that Rory was practicing/ playing so much that he wore them out fast. Such a great story.
Ich war da und voll begeistert - was für eine Wahnsinnserinnerung!
Vielen Dank, Mann!
Straight - up phenomenal! One hell of an Irishman. Still got a great sound 50yrs+.
Taste was a reel super group. I've never seen them playing live.
But I was lucky when my cousins got me a ticket for the only Rory Gallagher's concert, mid seventies, in Oporto, Portugal.
What a fine guitar player, both acoustic and electric.
Rory Gallagher is such a great player. Their band taste went into different realm during that performance. Maybe the best live performance I’ve ever seen period.
I saw him
in my home town of Sunderland in 1974.
He was simply incredible.
Never seen this footage before. I was fortunate enough to see this performance at The Isle Of Wight Festival and it brings back so many memories. Thanks Rory and Taste.
I just discovered Rory by watching Old Grey Whistle Test videos on YT. I can’t believe I’ve never heard this before! Another great blues rock guitar genius. My new obsession!!! Ugh it’s been way too long since I got the itch. Thank you Rory. Thank you whoever posted these videos!!!
all hail rory gallagher! and vote for cork airport to be named after him
Any update on the airport being named in Rory's honor?
Ha! Why not, eh?
For Cork airport!!!
@@rainbowbill531 yeah that would be an honour for the greatest guitarist in the world

Rory Gallagher. The guitar hero's guitar hero.

Wonderful music and guitar playing.
My first concert in Boston back in the seventies. He warmed up for Dave Mason. Never heard of him before. Plaid shirt, drums, bass, ripped the place up, I'll never forget it. Dave Mason had a nice light show. Afterwards, I bought as many of Rory's records as I could find. Always a fan to this day.
Taste - what a brilliant band
John Flowers Have you herd taste by Tyga and offset ? Shit slaps bro
It's a shame that the manager lied to disband they

I was there! Remember, their “On the boards” album? Also, saw Taste regularly at The Mothers, Erdington, Birmingham.
One of my favourite songs next to Blister on the MOON. Rory Gallagher was a legend.
Being honest! The most dynamic and skilled rock guitar of that era! Clean and powerful playing
That vibrato is crazy good
Sorry Jimi
Underrated band.
