    Ripped Heart is without question my favorite Extra Life album. There are not a lot of songs that give me chills but Ripped Heart & Strong Brother/Weak Brother both do that.

    Rules are rules: if you release an album that ends with a track called Ten Year Teardrop you have to wait ten years to follow it up

    this actually brought me to tears man. This was what I grew up on, watching Todd P show videos and ultimately moving to the city and going out to these warehouses and seeing at that point not DPs and extralife but whoever was still around, Little Women, the baltimore guys when they came through, just a random assortment of what was left. Anyways I just never heard it really documented before even though to me this has always been "the music" secular works, dave's old records, this was the stuff for me. A step darker in your case, and more kind of sinewy in Dave's than the y'know Bjork/radiohead mainstream equivalent. I just never heard stuff so compositionally focused aside from yeah idk the bad plus maybe, and idk Sunn had their stuff together. But in terms of the esoteric arrangements that exact time just nailed it. And all my friends now just listen to Zach Phillips and like it doesnt touch me since my first favorite band was slipknot, I need you know Story. Like idk if u know the album under thunder and flourescent lights, like this cohesive vibe but with a matched fleshed outness. I think those drums were improvised, but your work i think of as like auteur theory music, but without it feeling completely like a movie, it lets you in. I have such a deep connection with it and those spaces.
    Other rare moments were like seeing adrian orange at shea stadium just get up and say he just got released from the mental hospital and that I think was his whole set.
    Or when ander wk did a DJ set but it was just him hanging out by the mixing board playing some medium volume rock music over the house speakers while bands like $keleton$ were setting up their gear.
    i think i saw u once playing keyboards for sam mickins. Man what a time, the tinnitus was worth it.

    Extra Life was such a formative band in my own growth as a musician. I don't think Made Flesh left the CD player in my car for over a year. It changed the way I think about music, and Nick's drums really changed my thoughts about the kit. Grateful for the times I got to play with y'all.

    Thanks for making this video for people like me who were outside of the scene and only got small glimpses at it. I don't feel any need to call the new album better than the old work, but The Play of Tooth and Claw is one of my favorite songs by anyone ever, and the whole album is superb.

    "torn up, thrown back together
    thinner each time, til skinned"
    Love that record and love Extra Life. Thank you for putting this together. I'm excited to check out other bands mentioned!

    This is great! The whole band story, the line-up details, all those venues and the Brooklyn scene, the bands you played with... Totally loved!! !
    I've had to rewind a couple of times to be sure you said "touring Europe" (28:48). haha Would be great!!!
    The new album is fantastic, Charlie. I think Extra Life fans will find exactly what they were waiting for. I'm listening to it the last 2 weeks and I'm totally enjoying it! Hope to see you live! Greetings from Barcelona!

    Really valuable video for the ones like me, who weren't there when all of this happened, because even much of the internet that documented your first run is pretty much gone now.
    I found out about you via Jute Gyte, because he's one of my all-time favorite artists, and I had stumbled upon the interview you did with him, then stuck around. That one, the Fire-Toolz interview, as well as the Mick Barr and Anthony Braxton guides are all so good, I've watched them multiple times. It actually took a while until I started listening to your music. I still haven't soaked most of it up as much as Secular Works. That album is really dope. Kinda surprised that you say that I Don't See It That Way was "the hit" off of that one, because that's definitely my least favorite track (I don't dislike it, but to me it pales in comparison to the others). Blackmail Blues, I'll Burn, The Refrain, and This Time are all tied for favorite though.

    I’m personally a huge fan of Made Flesh and the unapologetic, purposeful “cringe” of it all, the total disregard for “classiness”, although my favourite is probably the most normal song of them, Black Hoodie. I only discovered Extra Life recently, but it’s definitely allowed me to fuck around with “bad” lyrics and strange structures/melodies in some of the new stuff I’m working on, so great to hear such an honest and in-depth take on the project from the mastermind behind it!

Love your stuff always, I am a band called braillecloud and we played with you guys when you came to Jacksonville around the start of the pandemic, so happy extra life is back and putting out music again. PROTOCRINGE

  • @anotherslice2269
    @anotherslice2269 2 роки тому +1

    Since the new album I re-listened to a lot and yeah man, that one 'grown ups don't know anything' pedo song is so gross - the cringe factor would be hard to maintain long-term as you mature as a person.

    • @anotherslice2269
      @anotherslice2269 2 роки тому

      But then I guess your flirtation with fascist mysticism and stuff is also a type of cringe, although I know you were/are just exploring ideas which is different than being overly cringe/edgelord.

    • @charlielookerNYC
      @charlielookerNYC  2 роки тому +4

      Actually none of that stuff is pedo, even ironically or shock value wise! But many think it is, and I take full responsibility for the misunderstanding

    • @anotherslice2269
      @anotherslice2269 2 роки тому

      But that song in particular's cringe element is blatantly that it's coming from the perspective of a pedophile in love with some 12 year old (or whatever the age). Even if it's "actually" about something else, that's what 99% of listeners hear. I'm not saying it being a pedo song is bad, the cringe element is lyrically expected in earlier extra life work like you explained. That one in particular though, I was just like, man I must have limits in how much dissonance I can take when the aesthetics are beautiful and the lyrical content is disgusting.

    • @alexangell6428
      @alexangell6428 2 роки тому +2

      @@anotherslice2269 If the song you're mentioning is First Song, I took that song as a statement of post-adolescent guilt [vices // addiction, becoming jaded, taking on positions of influence when you can barely take care of yourself, etc] rather than any sort of pedophilia torch song, and I'm surprised that you aren't the only one to interpret it that way. TO BE FAIR: Little One struck me in a similar way that First Song struck you: nauseating, but not damning.

    • @anotherslice2269
      @anotherslice2269 2 роки тому

      @@alexangell6428 Do we have the lyrics anywhere? Can't find from google. Just seems really obviously going for pedo cringe vibes, while being "actually" about something else. Not dissimilar to fascist frog is "actually" is a frog kinda thing.
