Effort to produce/distribute for the sake of bettering everyone, and consumption and compensation for the appreciation of the product. It’s hard to conceptualize a situation where information gets unbiasedly consolidated and distributed with no compensation whatsoever.

Oh my God, thank you so much for this video! I've been reading The Phenomenology on and off for about 5 years now. I keep coming back to it, getting a little farther and then starting all over again. And my biggest fear as I've gotten to understand it (I haven't made it further than the end of Reason) is that I'm understanding it completely wrongly. I think I get it, and then I feel this intense doubt, like I'm just projecting things that aren't there or reading this ludicrously dense text incorrectly. And often I don't terribly agree with Findlay's commentary that I've occasionally paired with it. But 25 minutes into the video, and here you are describing EXACTLY what I had gotten from the early parts of Sense Certainty. I nearly cried. It's just so validating to see that I am at least somewhat on the right track when it comes to reading and comprehending the text. It can be alienating trying to read philosophy texts outside of a classroom with no one else to discuss the text with, no professor to ask clarifying questions, no feedback of any kind. And it can feel like I'm slipping into a totally idiosyncratic or solipsistic view on the work. But I also want to be able to read the text for myself and not stuck in a loop of reading more commentary than the actual thing.
Now I feel like I shouldn't go farther into your video than "Reason" and come back when I've finished it. I don't want to be too influenced by your reading. I feel emboldened that the hard-won comprehension I got so far on the text is worth the effort. And Sense Certainty is definitely the least hard part to get and least complex.
You have described the very tension of reason within my finite spirit, to use Hegelian notion here. Reading philosophy outside of a curriculum, or even for self torturing pleasure, leaves me in a local world, with no other who can critique, re-affirm or to have ascendening dialect to greater synthesis; so to know if my, what is perceived to me--as you alluded correctly--as solipsistic, thought is correct or erroneous.

My philosophy teacher in school who was smart and obviously interested in philosophy said he made a several attempts to read Hegel's " فنومينولوجيا الروح" (title of his book " The Phenomenology of Spirit" in arabic) but wasn't able to, because it was too difficult to understand... I hope he'll watch this video to understand more about hegel!!!
It's written in his thesis antithesis synthesis assembling of words where all 3 concepts of his dialectic synthesis are constantly reversed and reiterated, crossed back then resynthesisized. I saw it and could explain that in 30 seconds. But it's really poorly done unlike heideggers ontology on synthesis of the phenomology that bypasses reversed thesis into the ready at hand cause that's what they do.
I’ve only read 3 books by Hegel, and I’ll say that while he is a great person to reference and a great person to critique, he is a terrible writer. Once I accepted that he was a terrible writer, I actually found him easier to read, because what makes him inaccessible is his own tendency to self contradict in the name of making his point, however he often hides his point as a result
Very well done. Spinoza alludes to the Absolute by identifying the tree: whereas Hegel describes the details of the leaves on the tree -- and also clarifies the tree.
An interesting, ancient view is the leaves, the tree are creations of the mind. There is no leaf without a tree and no tree without an earth. I add that a soaked “tree” in a river is a tree? It is mostly water, no? All is one and the illusion of the mind is to define its parts and see “reality.” Not an easy understanding to grok, but makes complete sense. We create our reality, then write books on what we defined.
The platonic idea is backward nonsense, no it doesn't make sense. the challenge put forth by plato was solved by hegel, that's why it's not contentious that he's the last philosopher

At around 02:01:20 you mentioned the fact that a lot of the newer generation is trying to understand the 20th century, which I can agree on from experience. This made me realise that it is inevitable that the messy unfolding of the 20th century is to be studied so carefully, as this could be the workings of Geist trying to understand its own wickedness that resulted from its freedom. I also think that both Hegel and especially Heidegger is very overhated in Anglo-speaking countries due to the language-barrier with German. Philosophy is also something you must feel, and German philosophy feels like the clarification of knowledge you already possessed, true understanding. The English translation of German philosophy does not contain the same level of instinctive understanding unfortunately. Therefore, is there also a visual guide to Heidegger coming someday? These videos are absolutely extraordinary and I think Heidegger's philosophy is one of the most important of all time!

In recent weeks I took a break and didnt read, watch or list to much philosphy. But this video greatly motivated me. And though I am personally mainly interested in the intersection of philosophy and politics, I feel once again why I still wanna pursue philosphy in general as well. Start reading, this will be your job for the next few years anyways. But don’t wait for the perfect lectures, just read. I met some philosophers from Frankfurt, it is a great university to study philosophy.
I finally managed to finish the entire Phenomenology of Spirit yesterday, after years of attempting. This video has helped me so much in giving me an overview of WHAT HEGEL'S PROJECT WAS, I am very thankful that such a cohesive and aesthetic content of Hegel is available for free!

Such a great work, as always. I've noticed something out of context and it's that in the minute 53:00, the phrase of Hegel about "The fear of the lord is indeed the begining of wisdom", it's not a Hegel's phrase, in fact, is a phrase of Bible, in Job 28:29 you can find that talks about how wisdom was hidden for the simple eyes of man, only God has known it path because he prepared and manifestated wisdom in the begining. For us to reach this virtue, it says that intelligence is being far of evilness, and wisdom the fear of us as humans to God, our lord.
Hegel is so difficult - I found him harder to read than a lot of the graduate level mathematics I studied in school - but you did an amazing job explaining him. I have a friend who is a philosophy professor and definitely going to show him this video too (he loved the one on Kant)

Riddle me this Hegel! A girl wants my number and holds my hand, laughs at my stupid jokes, and so on. I explain to her Divine violence, why revolutionary terror is absolutely necessary and correct, and try to do you a solid and explain the dialectic, but prolly in the most incoherent manner. She listens and is interested, then I explain to her the ugly truth of social democracy and she understands. Then I ask her to hang out and she ghosts me. Do I perform negation of the negation and chase her? You’ve ruined my life.
The woman holds your hand, laughs at your jokes, and shows an interest in you, presumbably a reasonably attractive male. You then try to deflect from what is actually happening in the moment. She ghosts you. Yes, you perform a negation of the negation and your Aufhebung is to hold to the real biological reality of procreation and child rearing. Or, you can be afraid of that kind of commitment and keep deflecting & avoiding the obvious!

I never really understood Western philosophy in depth until I studied Buddhism in detail. You can see how they struggled with the ideas Buddhism deals with. The identity of relative (particular) and absolute is referred to as the Two Truths in Buddhism. Everyone who wants deeper perspective would do good to have a basic knowledge of Nagarjuna's *Mulamadyamikakarika.*
Yeah I do wonder how much eastern influence was swept under the rug or used as secret sources, considering Buddhist translations had reached Europe by the middle ages. There is also a common thread, in particular German thinkers that took interest in eastern texts, Leibniz, Müller, Nietzsche, possibly Schopenhauer. The I-Ching clearly made an impact, first translated by Jesuits and shared with Leibniz. The first publications were in Germany.
My reading is that Hegel is a Hermiticist inspired by TAOism life affirming not craving for transcendence wrapped up in Death Cults. In his lectures makes short shrift of Eastern Philosophies but runs with them. affirms the dignity of being meaning concepts runs with
@@gyurilajos7220 The information they had back then about Buddhism was completely unreliable and inaccurate. I'm more referring to how Western philosophy closes in on the same ideas that Buddhism addresses, not any specific mentioning of Eastern philosophy Hegel made.
There's good skepticism for why it's ignored (once you completely exclude the Analytic Tradition's explicit rejection of and failure to grasp Hegel's project): If the thesis it holds is true, it can literally revolutionize the entire modern paradigm of religion, philosophy, _and_ science and actually open the way to not simply _a,_ but _the_ Theory of Everything. Hegel's entire system was an attempt at that. He wanted to provide a purely immanent development of Logic _into_ the sciences of Nature (Applied Mathematics, Physics/Chemistry, Biology) _and_ consequently Spirit (Psychology, Jurisprudence/Political Science, Art/Philosophy/Science as such), and the only way he saw to achieve that was by literally reinventing the foundations of logical reason through Plato's dialectic, built on further through Kant. What all that specifically means in the context of today's academic fields is that he wanted to develop an absolutely _a priori_ rational science, a conception that outright contradicts the foundation of everything that comprises today's empirical sciences dating back to Francis Bacon through the help of Aristotle's _Posterior Analytics._ Nothing I say here is to suggest that Hegel is a crackpot who believed he could achieve absolute knowledge of everything (science _always_ continues to expand in its knowledge), but it _does_ imply that Hegel is yet even more radical than he is already hinted to be in his project. To give you just a taste of just how radical his project is, the _Science of Logic_ was explicitly meant to develop all of ontology, metaphysics and logic totally _without_ any axioms. Now take the completion of that one Logic, and then go on to develop _all_ the knowledge we take for granted and _will_ continue to create, under a unified rational lens. _That_ is what he is really all about.
@@Synodalian I'm not sure what your problem with Hegel is here. Insofar as empirical science thinks, it necessarily must work in terms of categories expounded in philosophy. Insofar as Hegel's method holds, I don't think anyone gets out of that. Insofar as todays sciences can't get on board with this, that's the degree to which they are irrational. That's never philosophy's problem.

Why the absolute idea has to manifests itself into space time, matter, forces, chemicals, life, consciousness, self consciousness, religion, and ultimately philosophy. On the other hand, it is the job empirical sciences to show how it happens, which chemicals give rise to which which other ones etc. Both philosophy and sciences have different aims for hegel, and he explicitly says philosophy shouldn't come in to teach sciences

My point is that _not only_ does empirical science rely on philosophy for its very substance of reasoning, but philosophy in its _full development_ through dialectical reason literally _is_ science in its true form. In other words, according to Hegel what we call "empirical science" today is a misnomer: it literally _isn't_ science but is rather a pragmatically arranged consensus of contingent knowledge built on the presupposed and _unproven_ foundations of empiricism dating back to Francis Bacon. It's precisely not philosophical and, therefore, scientific _enough._

My philosophy teacher in school who was smart and obviously interested in philosophy said he made a several attempts to read Hegel's " فنومينولوجيا الروح" (title of his book " The Phenomenology of Spirit" in arabic) but wasn't able to, because it was too difficult to understand... I hope he'll watch this video to understand more about hegel!!!

It's written in his thesis antithesis synthesis assembling of words where all 3 concepts of his dialectic synthesis are constantly reversed and reiterated, crossed back then resynthesisized. I saw it and could explain that in 30 seconds. But it's really poorly done unlike heideggers ontology on synthesis of the phenomology that bypasses reversed thesis into the ready at hand cause that's what they do.
Hegel is top 3 most difficult philosphers to understand. I even had one professor who thought he was insane.
I’ve only read 3 books by Hegel, and I’ll say that while he is a great person to reference and a great person to critique, he is a terrible writer. Once I accepted that he was a terrible writer, I actually found him easier to read, because what makes him inaccessible is his own tendency to self contradict in the name of making his point, however he often hides his point as a result

Very well done. Spinoza alludes to the Absolute by identifying the tree: whereas Hegel describes the details of the leaves on the tree -- and also clarifies the tree.
An interesting, ancient view is the leaves, the tree are creations of the mind. There is no leaf without a tree and no tree without an earth. I add that a soaked “tree” in a river is a tree? It is mostly water, no? All is one and the illusion of the mind is to define its parts and see “reality.” Not an easy understanding to grok, but makes complete sense. We create our reality, then write books on what we defined.
The platonic idea is backward nonsense, no it doesn't make sense. the challenge put forth by plato was solved by hegel, that's why it's not contentious that he's the last philosopher

At around 02:01:20 you mentioned the fact that a lot of the newer generation is trying to understand the 20th century, which I can agree on from experience. This made me realise that it is inevitable that the messy unfolding of the 20th century is to be studied so carefully, as this could be the workings of Geist trying to understand its own wickedness that resulted from its freedom. I also think that both Hegel and especially Heidegger is very overhated in Anglo-speaking countries due to the language-barrier with German. Philosophy is also something you must feel, and German philosophy feels like the clarification of knowledge you already possessed, true understanding. The English translation of German philosophy does not contain the same level of instinctive understanding unfortunately. Therefore, is there also a visual guide to Heidegger coming someday? These videos are absolutely extraordinary and I think Heidegger's philosophy is one of the most important of all time!

In recent weeks I took a break and didnt read, watch or list to much philosphy. But this video greatly motivated me. And though I am personally mainly interested in the intersection of philosophy and politics, I feel once again why I still wanna pursue philosphy in general as well.

I've noticed something out of context and it's that in the minute 53:00, the phrase of Hegel about "The fear of the lord is indeed the begining of wisdom", it's not a Hegel's phrase, in fact, is a phrase of Bible, in Job 28:29 you can find that talks about how wisdom was hidden for the simple eyes of man, only God has known it path because he prepared and manifestated wisdom in the begining. For us to reach this virtue, it says that intelligence is being far of evilness, and wisdom the fear of us as humans to God, our lord.

I never really understood Western philosophy in depth until I studied Buddhism in detail. You can see how they struggled with the ideas Buddhism deals with. The identity of relative (particular) and absolute is referred to as the Two Truths in Buddhism. Everyone who wants deeper perspective would do good to have a basic knowledge of Nagarjuna's *Mulamadyamikakarika.*
Yeah I do wonder how much eastern influence was swept under the rug or used as secret sources, considering Buddhist translations had reached Europe by the middle ages. There is also a common thread, in particular German thinkers that took interest in eastern texts, Leibniz, Müller, Nietzsche, possibly Schopenhauer. The I-Ching clearly made an impact, first translated by Jesuits and shared with Leibniz. The first publications were in Germany.
My reading is that Hegel is a Hermiticist inspired by TAOism life affirming not craving for transcendence wrapped up in Death Cults. In his lectures makes short shrift of Eastern Philosophies but runs with them. affirms the dignity of being meaning concepts runs with

The Science of Logic is among the best philosophical works of all time. Horribly and unjustifiably ignored. Would highly recommend.
There's good skepticism for why it's ignored (once you completely exclude the Analytic Tradition's explicit rejection of and failure to grasp Hegel's project): If the thesis it holds is true, it can literally revolutionize the entire modern paradigm of religion, philosophy, _and_ science and actually open the way to not simply _a,_ but _the_ Theory of Everything. Hegel's entire system was an attempt at that.
He wanted to provide a purely immanent development of Logic _into_ the sciences of Nature (Applied Mathematics, Physics/Chemistry, Biology) _and_ consequently Spirit (Psychology, Jurisprudence/Political Science, Art/Philosophy/Science as such), and the only way he saw to achieve that was by literally reinventing the foundations of logical reason through Plato's dialectic, built on further through Kant.
What all that specifically means in the context of today's academic fields is that he wanted to develop an absolutely _a priori_ rational science, a conception that outright contradicts the foundation of everything that comprises today's empirical sciences dating back to Francis Bacon through the help of Aristotle's _Posterior Analytics._
Nothing I say here is to suggest that Hegel is a crackpot who believed he could achieve absolute knowledge of everything (science _always_ continues to expand in its knowledge), but it _does_ imply that Hegel is yet even more radical than he is already hinted to be in his project. To give you just a taste of just how radical his project is, the _Science of Logic_ was explicitly meant to develop all of ontology, metaphysics and logic totally _without_ any axioms. Now take the completion of that one Logic, and then go on to develop _all_ the knowledge we take for granted and _will_ continue to create, under a unified rational lens. _That_ is what he is really all about.
@@Synodalian I'm not sure what your problem with Hegel is here. Insofar as empirical science thinks, it necessarily must work in terms of categories expounded in philosophy. Insofar as Hegel's method holds, I don't think anyone gets out of that. Insofar as todays sciences can't get on board with this, that's the degree to which they are irrational. That's never philosophy's problem.

Why the absolute idea has to manifests itself into space time, matter, forces, chemicals, life, consciousness, self consciousness, religion, and ultimately philosophy. On the other hand, it is the job empirical sciences to show how it happens, which chemicals give rise to which which other ones etc. Both philosophy and sciences have different aims for hegel, and he explicitly says philosophy shouldn't come in to teach sciences

My point is that _not only_ does empirical science rely on philosophy for its very substance of reasoning, but philosophy in its _full development_ through dialectical reason literally _is_ science in its true form. In other words, according to Hegel what we call "empirical science" today is a misnomer: it literally _isn't_ science but is rather a pragmatically arranged consensus of contingent knowledge built on the presupposed and _unproven_ foundations of empiricism dating back to Francis Bacon. It's precisely not philosophical and, therefore, scientific _enough._

With the darkness/lightness video essays you’ve been putting out recently I wonder if you might parlay all of it into resurfacing and expounding some of your work on Deleuze as a counter concept? You know creativity, boundless virtuality, emergence and all that good stuff. I haven’t read it but in that vein I suppose the book Hegel or Spinoza would be interesting. Thanks for your hard work!
