I love rotaries. I'm actually saving up for a rx8 which is how i ended up finding your channel. I always planned to do a ls swap though. If i was getting a FC or FD then yeah, i'd keep the rotary all day.
Yes. My cousin has a 2001 Camaro SS that's pro-charged. It's making 580whp on 8psi lol. No lie, he used to daily it (except for winter) for about two years and he's never had a single problem with it t'll this day. Btw i love the channel, definitely will help when i pick up my rx8! (:
There are only 2 non-Rotary swaps I'll ever consider for this: 1UZ-FE or F20C. Can be tuned for very similar high rev characteristics with all the other benefits of a piston. At the same time, the rotary is so mechanically simpler than a piston engine that I might as well just swap a 20B instead
Mazda's V6 engines are high revinng like one in MX-3 all of these supercharged would be better than going for V8. V8 doesnt fit this car and is far too much be it LS or toyotas UZ same with all stupid 1-2jz swaps. It will upswt the car and rip away all grip and it will be far too fast to enjoy on the road.
Your videos are very well thought out and produced. You can tell you spend a lot of time producing them, and I really enjoy all of the RX-8 information. One tip however... The music you have running under your dialogue distracts from the message. It is not necessary to include music, especially with vocals, as it detracts from your otherwise perfect upload and will eventually date the video. I hope you don't take this the wrong way. I simply offer some constructive criticism. Take care!

Used to own a Rotary. RX-7 to be precise. The Car is indeed iconic for the “Rotary engine” just like the “2Jz” In the Mk4 Supra. Don’t engine swap iconic cars people. It makes us Car guys Crying.
Car guys should only cry if the car is getting crushed. I say do whatever you want to your car because it’s your car. Some folks are purists, some want reliable engines that make great power and are easy to maintain.
Looking for info from other ls swap rx8 owners, did you attempt to reuse the factory saddle fuel tank with success? Also wondering which accelerator pedal you used for cable type throttle body?
I once heard someone say: "I bought it without an engine so what else could I do" he didn't like my reaction, well you could have kept the soul. In my opinion LS swaps aren't bad, but not in a car where the engine is 90% of the cars caracter. Go swap a miata (mx-5) but not a lovely rotary I think 🤔
There will always be conflict on this territory between conservative people and people who like to experiment. And personally, i think you are free to do whatever you want. But I agree on the fact, that what makes the rx8 "THE RX8" is the rotary engine, and without it, it would be just another car on the pile.
"The car has a max of 300 something horsepower unless you supercharge it, but it has soul!! Why would you want to diminish the soul for better performance, easier maintanance, cheaper parts, higher reliability...!" 🙄🙄
Just taken chassis wise, it's ~1300kg (with dorito) for a RWD, 4 door, 4 seat sports car/sedan thing, it's a helluva great chassis to swap any sufficiently light engine into, LS swaps just happen to fit the bill real well.
matthewmatthew638 I know it works, but the thing with the rx-8 is not to have it working, it's to have it unique. With an LS swap you end up with a small corvette... not exactly as involving as the original I think... (watch the rx-7 fd review by regular car reviews, he explains the issue exactly right)
A small corvette with 4-ish doors and 4 seats? You just made a LS swapped RX8 sound even more appealing. (And no, a CTS-V is a freaking bus size-wise compared to the vette or RX8)
LS swap if you want to spend less money, have more power and less hassle, Keep Rotary for the personality of the RX-8. Stop hating on each other folks, there are different types of car enthusiasts. I’m getting one in a few days and it’s already had some mods (buying it from a co-worker) and he’s taken good care of it and I’ll do the same. But when there’s an expensive issue with the rotary I’m LS swapping it. I plan to keep it for a while so I think about the long run. This is just me personally. And as I’ve heard some people say, LS swapping it basically turns it into a corvette and to that I say, I’m fine with that. I’m gonna have both engines anyways. Hopefully the rotary will last me awhile, it already has 90,000 miles on it (unless it was rebuilt and idk about it, or a new one put in. I don’t have it in my possession yet).
?...... You mean to say the single defining characteristic of the RX7 and RX8 are their engines? You mean two cars that are absolutely legendary for their chassis's. Get a clue.
I think what he's saying or trying to say is with that motor it comes with makes the car almost perfectly balanced with its size and where its positioned (front/mid engine) and that its intended for the twisties not straight line speed. In swapping the motor out with a Ls that motor then takes up way more of the engine bay plus is a lot heavier completely changing the characteristics/handling of the car. Plus no more zoom zoom high revs.
Owning a Corvette or any high end Sports car comes with so much baggage. This sounds like the perfect mix of sleeper status, reliability, easy to find cheap parts, low insurance premiums, etc. I'm interested In doing it 😁
Unless you bought the body for $500 (and you can, there are a fair amount of them...), or your engine is dead, it would be a shame to swap them. The entire point of this car IS the rotary engine. Its different, its unique, its cool from an engineering perspective. If you didn't like that it was rotary, then I have no idea why you would ever buy one. There are so many great and fun cars for near the same price tag, making an LS swap completely pointless (you could even LS swap the other cars if you just want an LS).
Love my renesis and love my 9k revs.. Never would consider anything else for my rx8. Looking at pricing for a full engine balance and new ecu. Going to try to get my rpm to 11k and have max power around 10.5k RPM.. Sitting at 76k miles on original engine with 0 shop hours on it so far. Runs strong and starts smooth still. 100%original engine
Driven by madness cobbs accessport seems like the best way to go for custom tuning... And I'm hoping for 260 at the wheels. See how it goes on the dyno when that day comes. Be nice to see 300 but no idea what can be pulled with the extra RPM range... Ultimately I want to get my rx over 200mph. This is just step one lol
Driven by madness just did some poking around actually... Cobbs accessport cut their support to any series 2 renesis (mine) and limited support to the series 1 which is expected to be fully removed at some point. So in search of a new program to reflash with I found this little gem www.versatuner.com/features/mazda-rx-8-gen2 Tons of features from maps to improve mpg to improved power, as well as removing speed and rev limiters to anti-theft and even allows programming in launch control plus "no lift shifting"
Love the videos and the scenery for that matter. After you get an upgraded ignition system it's not to bad to maintain the rx-8 just gotta keep up on it :D any ignition system you would recommend?
Thanks man! :D If you want a long lasting strong ignition system, save up some money and buy the BHR one. But if you want a decent one without paying tons of money go for the NKG one :)
I've seen nothing about additional costs of mounting the engine, making mounts, adaptor plates, ecu, gearbox, propshaft, diff etc etc how much is the all that?
I personally wouldnt swap an LS engine into my RX8, i would actually go for a JZ series engine. I am actually looking into the prices for the swap kit and an engine (especially after being spanked from a rolling start by a 1jz lexus lol.
I'll save you the time: 1. They make more power than ANY factory rotary motor. 2. They are very durable and parts are very common 3. ITS MADE IN AMERICA 4. Some people would rather NOT premix shit in their gas 5. People want good gas mileage and a reliable engine and that is NOT the case with a 13b or other rotary engine.
Ay ! The Ls swap sounds great man. More power = more fun. I mean i still like to keep it origiinal with the renesis but it still sounds good! I got a couple of questions though. This is the first time i hear about this. So 1. Do you need a kit for this? 2. About how much dollars is the ls engine? 3. Is the Ls engine a piston engine? Or is it still a rotary?
Hey man! 1. It's a piston engine 2. Yes, you need a whole lot of parts to make the swap. There is a kit available too. 3. A used one is around 3000$, here's the link: www.ebay.com/itm/2000-LS1-345-HP-Corvette-Engine-Assembly-w-Accessories-Harness-PCM-130k-Miles-/372028743450?hash=item569ea41f1a:g:dCoAAOSwJLJZfPIj&vxp=mtr
Driven by madness isn't a rotary about the same price? 3000 & so just curious what does LS mean? & does it specifically have to be a Ls engine or could you swap any motor in?
Hey boss I got a quick question is it possible to buy a 4x4 v8 into the Rx8 cause I’m just wondering if it’s possible to put a Toyota Tundra engine in the Rx8 lol
I have a rx8 Genesis 2004 and lately it has caused me a lot of problems when the car is cold it works normally but when it heats it loses the engine speed and some time later it turns off and then it is only possible to start the car again once its temperature drops another (The car is already in the workshop for 15 days and they are not sure what's going on) any ideas?
could be lots of things, compression loss, weak ignition system, sometimes the catalytic converter can cause some trouble. Try watching my q&a videos to see if your problem is listed there :)
Hey bro! What do you think is it worth it to pay more for restyled version of Rx8? About engine swap, I don' understand it. If someone wants v8 , the buy some v8 car. In my opinion what makes Rx8 being Rx8 is rotary. Without it is is heartless, despite being better. Of course, just my opinion.
If the engine has been replaced or it still has good compression then yes :) Look if the car revs smoothly to 9k rpm without hesitation, and make sure it doesnt have white or blue smoke coming out of the exhaust :)
Your comment got my attention. Ive noticed quite a few RX cars with blue smoke issuing from the exhaust after straight piping, mainly de-catting/gutting their cat. Isn't this normal for a car with a free flowing exhaust and an engine that practically burns 55 gallon drums of oil getting to and from Walmart? Especially if you premix?
Actually there should be no reason to swap out the engine. It’s great out of the box...people need to know beforehand before getting a rotary powered car. That’s part of the charm of them. Takes a little more time to maintain them. Unfortunately people are lazy I guess.
I ditched my 93 just because parts have steadily been increasing in price. If it was just the nuisance of pulling and replacing it that would be one thing. Stock they leave something to be desired and then it's a lot of money to make reliable power (which is generally lower). I've been greatly underimpressed with the Renesis. Personally I really dislike how the RX8 look, but I'd buy one for the handling. I mean it's an NC platform, but I prefer a hardtop. Also, it's super cheap to pick up cars with blown motors currently. Then again I think people underestimate what it takes to do an LS swap right. Figure out what you want the car to do for you and then make it happen. 8 just happens to be a good platform that's less jarring than the FD.
Being someone who ls swapped an fc I can say it's for power and reliability. I regretted it though... Sure it was fast but it just wasn't the same. Too much power is not so great for spirited back roads driving in my opinion
There is a guy here in my area that has a AMC 360 in a rx8 and it might be the fastest real street car in this area that has AC working and all accessories. Killer car for sure and definitely something different.
The hate for LS engines is so entertaining. I like rotaries, i think they're awesome. But if they're so great, why aren't they made anymore? #lsswapeverything #makeeveronemad
I believe the reason so few have been made is because there are limitations to who can build a Wankel engine, based on its patten. Overall I would personally prefer almost anything LS over rotary...
To me, it still doesn't really make sense to do this, unless you just like the aesthetics of the car, but not what makes the car special... It's kind of a kick in the face if you ask me. These cars are known for their lightness, zero engine tremors, smooth linear powercurve and dat brap sound. If you don't like the power of your rx8, swap in the 13b from an rx7... Don't drop in the lead that will make it heavy and will get rid of some of the handling that makes this the fastest car around the corners on the touge... If you have issues with the engine, why don't you just buy a piston car instead. This car is for people who are slightly mentally insane. If you want to make sense, get another car. My country also has no knowledgeable rotary shops. I JUST came back from the UK to drop my RX7 engine off at RE:Worx for just that reason.
It's like, you somehow know what i deeply think inside my head about this. 100000% agree on all the above! Rx8 ownership should be hard, so that people can appreciate the dedication it takes, and the right people can get they're hands on them, and start fixing them instead of making a graveyard out of them.
An 6.2L LS3 weighs 390lbs with accessories, virtually the same as a 13B-REW, but the LS will make way more power and torque out of the box. If you're looking for more power, there's no better way to do it than an LS.
@@larry8065 for the cost of a swap I'd be hugely interested in the potential of a custom renesis 3/4 rotor instead. Of which a 3 rotor has actually been done.
Theres built 13b engines making arround 1000 hp. And 500whp turbo renesis engines. Just theres not many people in the us that knows how to take care of a rotary.. loves the video's btw.
Oddio, l'ho detto a voce alta? Si si si si si :D Ho quasi finito di metterla in sesto per bene, di farla meccanicamente perfetta, ed ora e' tempo di godermela :D
@@maoristereo If Put the effort and money into making a 1000 hp rotary it would be a dedicated track car not a daily...and that goes for any engine if I’m squeezing that much power out of it it’s a track car not a daily... there’s no reason to have more then 500 hp on the street unless your car comes factory with more like a hellcat or Bugatti or what ever but still that’s an crazy amount of power to putput to work and get groceries
In the words of ryosuke dropping a more powerful engine in a car isn't hard no. Cus if it's power u want going in a straight line fast ain't hard but makes the Rx series Worth it including engine is the control and mastery
LS 60,4 hp/L versus 13B 147,7 hp/L How about weight of the engine, body balance, RX8 is mid engine car with perfect balance. LS RX8 is like a BMW E36 with a V12? Nose heavy? I like the concept but it is not all bread and butter
The ls is just a cheaper engine, if you rebuild and tune a rotary like the race enginges ect no piston engine will come close. but its extreme expensive and nearly useless to do because no one needs that much power and rpm. even in race. so the Ls is a good engine to choose but a lighter engine would do a better job in a rx ;) sry my english is terrible.XP
You're english is perfect :) I agree with you. With a very big budget, a rotary can be extremely powerful. But in the end, you'll have too much power to actually enjoy the car and have fun. Like you've said, LS engines are heavy, and brake the balance of the rx8, but they give more power. So in the end, a stock rx8 that is well tuned is more fun :D
LS: Destroys the RX Series, Only Fast at straight lines Rotary: better sounding, High revving, small engine means better handling and light weight Cmon guys Rotaries r dying Don’t make Japanese Cars into Corvettes
The build will be my rx8 :) It's going to be a Drift/street build. I want to see how far can i take my mods, so they remain legal... or at least "legal" :P
To all you Rotards out there; If the Rotary was that good we'd all be driving them, every car would be rotary. But unfortunately they are no good after 100k miles. Sorry
I can't imagine what dropping a 'boat anchor' V8 into the nose of a RX-8 would do to the balance and handling, two of the main reasons you buy an RX-8 in the first place. If you want an LS, buy a Corvette. I would have thought a small (say 2 litre) turbo or supercharged four would be a better bet, although I have no idea what would fit.
If you were to take a popular 2.0 turbo design, say, a Nissan RB20DET, that engine would weight in at 540lbs or 245kgs. Again, that's 2.0L turbo. A Mazda 13b-REW turbo would be around 375lbs to 400lbs, and both engines make way less power than the LS. A 6.2L CT LS376 V8 weighs as little as 390lbs w/accessories or about 177kg, about the same as the Turbo Rotary and way less than the Nissan RB. The LS is a very small, lightweight engine by large displacement piston engine standards, small piston standards, even by any size rotary standards. It's why it's popular. It has virtually no disadvantage in swaps with certain power goals. It almost every way you slice it, it's objectively a better engine period.
That's the point of putting a v8 in mate... a stronger engine to make more power. Why would anyone want to put a 1.3 piston engine inside that makes 90hp? :)
Keisler Automation makes a complete kit to swap the GM LFX V6 into an RX-8; includes new brackets, driveshaft, rear axles, re-flashed ECU, wiring harness, the works. All you need to source is the RX-8, LFX engine (RWD or FWD version, you can easily convert the FWD engine to RWD), transmission, and rear diff. The entire conversion will set you back about $10-15k depending on how cheap you can get the RX-8. I'm highly considering doing this swap myself (as I'm not a huge fan of the LS motor, just my preference. And there's not much documentation of the RX-8 LS swap that I've found), I currently daily an NC Miata and have always loved everything about the RX-8...except the engine. Also check out the channel Track Car Obsession, he's done many videos on this whole process, from pulling the drivetrain from the RX-8 to how to convert a FWD LFX to a RWD setup, to any modifications you might need depending on how many extras you want to add to the car (like intake sump, oil cooler, coilover suspension, etc.). Best part is the Keisler kit allows you to keep all the cabin accessories of the RX-8 intact like heated seats, sunroof, A/C and heater, or whatever else came on it from the factory, and it sounds like the whole conversion only adds about 100lbs to the car over stock while getting nearly the same HP as you would in an LS, just with a little less torque.
Who tells people the reason THEY bought a car?... The chassis is great ..the engine although unique cost a lot to maintain... Burns a lot of gas ...the reason Mazda doesn't use it themselves.. It would have sold better with a traditional engine..... specifically a mzr
Plenty of RX8s out there at the 100k mile mark being sold as the engine needing a rebuild. I personally like the body style but can't stand the unrelatable and short life of the engine.
Better gas mileage, more hp, and reliability. Its honestly a no-brainer.
If you're not a rotary purist, then it's a good alternative to keep the rx8 running great :)
I love rotaries. I'm actually saving up for a rx8 which is how i ended up finding your channel. I always planned to do a ls swap though. If i was getting a FC or FD then yeah, i'd keep the rotary all day.

4. Some people would rather NOT premix shit in their gas
5. People want good gas mileage and a reliable engine and that is NOT the case with a 13b or other rotary engine.
Then why get a rotary engine car??
@@rippedguru2403 cuz someone may like it's exterior but hate the poor engine performance :)
@@draxidox ohhhh ok, good point
what's the first song that plays in this video?
How much does it cost to change engine
Between 10.000$ and 20.000$ depending how how cheap you can get the donor engine
It would waste alot of gas after the swap right?
About the same, but you'd have more power :)
Hey man!
1. It's a piston engine
By the way i appreciate the responses ;)
LS is the name of the engines General Motors makes. Not every engine fits inside, the LS is one of the most used engines :)
Anytime man :)
Hey boss I got a quick question is it possible to buy a 4x4 v8 into the Rx8 cause I’m just wondering if it’s possible to put a Toyota Tundra engine in the Rx8 lol
Way to expensive of a project. Not worth it imo. Well, with the right amount of money anything is possible :)
I dont know much about cars but if you engine swap the rx8 with the ls1 engine does mpg change?
ls1 has slightly better fuel economy. Both roughly the same at 18mpg
A stock or properly built LS will get 30+ mpg on the highway all day.
how much is the price ? (and i mean all exept the car cost) asking because i dont know and im kinda new to this tipe of things , thanks!
For a proper swap 10.000$ or maybe a bit less if you get a good price on a used engine.
Buying a rotary got me bankrupt lol :D
how much would it cost to get a LS1 swap?
James Wells from 7 to 15k$ :)
@@Drivenbymadness is that US$?
Currently in the process of finishing the swap myself, if anyone needs some pointers feel free to message me.
Yeah, how do you put the rotary engine back in after you learned how to take care of it?
Flyingdutchy33 oh shit!
Snisnoshe Good luck with it m8! Send over some pics when you finish it, and some dyno results to see the difference :)
Snisnohse link to get the engine
step 1. buy a new one with failing compression off ebay my dude.
I would te k20 or k24 f20 just to keep it intended balance.
The aluminium LS weighs roughly the same as the fd turbo rx7 powerplant; balance intact.
@@Judge_Jon 430-460lb LS and the twin turbo stock 13b-rew is 323lb
should I buy a used rx8 with more than 90k km on it? it costs quite low, like 5k€-7k€
@@NormalCredit-21 Yes, thats normal for a decatted car + premix.
Actually there should be no reason to swap out the engine. It’s great out of the box...people need to know beforehand before getting a rotary powered car.
That’s part of the charm of them. Takes a little more time to maintain them. Unfortunately people are lazy I guess.
Reggie McKinnon yup, you've said it man :)
But also I.think people should be free to experiment. That's the whole point of being a car fan 👌😊
"Mom am I car-ing right??
It's not people being lazy some people don't want to pay more then what they have to for maintenance cost
Then buy something else and leave the rare, dying rotary alone
What LS engine can fit into a mazda rx8?
LS1 or LSx are the best for the 8.
All of them.
There's much potential in the rotaty
Its a failed design that burns oil and has terrible gas mileage.

Love your stuff! Keep up the great and frequent content!
Thanks man! :D
after i get my rx8 im looking at swapping in a 2jz after a while
Where can I buy a ls engine
Ebay
Simple, bc it offers more power, better reliability, as well as better fuel AND oil economy...
LS swap has been done before ad nauseam. What would be really cool is dropping a 6.7 L Duramax V8 turbodiesel into an RX-8.
There is a guy here in my area that has a AMC 360 in a rx8 and it might be the fastest real street car in this area that has AC working and all accessories. Killer car for sure and definitely something different.
3.5K views, good job neighbour!

The hate for LS engines is so entertaining. I like rotaries, i think they're awesome. But if they're so great, why aren't they made anymore?
#lsswapeverything #makeeveronemad
Lehuu Zaher they still make them just not in a production car yet they have a new one coming soon
one word: *emissions*
Anyone that says any engine swap is lazy hasn't done an engine swap lol.
Rotary have a bad pollution, but i love the power and brapp brapp brapp brapp 😍
I believe the reason so few have been made is because there are limitations to who can build a Wankel engine, based on its patten. Overall I would personally prefer almost anything LS over rotary...
that Red Suns sticker tho...

Not something I'd go for normally but I can understand the need
How much would it cost to swap?
from 4.000 to 10.000 USD, depending on how much the engine costs
id love to buy a ls swapped rx8 .... if i could find one
You can get 1000 hp out of a 13b not as “cheaply” as an ls but it is doable usually it’s a full billet engine
Yeah, just try being stuck in trafic with that setup.

LS 60,4 hp/L versus 13B 147,7 hp/L
How about weight of the engine, body balance, RX8 is mid engine car with perfect balance.
LS RX8 is like a BMW E36 with a V12? Nose heavy?
I like the concept but it is not all bread and butter
An aluminum ls doesnt actually weigh much more than the stock rx8 motor, I believe there is around 150lbs between them?
Lynn McKenney not sure, but the 13B engine is tiny. Get some counterweight low in the trunk and it will be fine.
2:46 saab :)
The ls is just a cheaper engine, if you rebuild and tune a rotary like the race enginges ect no piston engine will come close. but its extreme expensive and nearly useless to do because no one needs that much power and rpm. even in race. so the Ls is a good engine to choose but a lighter engine would do a better job in a rx ;)
sry my english is terrible.XP
You're english is perfect :) I agree with you. With a very big budget, a rotary can be extremely powerful. But in the end, you'll have too much power to actually enjoy the car and have fun. Like you've said, LS engines are heavy, and brake the balance of the rx8, but they give more power. So in the end, a stock rx8 that is well tuned is more fun :D
Not to mention a v8 sounds so much better.
LS: Destroys the RX Series, Only Fast at straight lines
Rotary: better sounding, High revving, small engine means better handling and light weight
Cmon guys
Rotaries r dying
Don’t make Japanese Cars into Corvettes
I believe the Ls weighs around 150lbs more than the stock rx8 motor, so it shouldn't throw things off too badly

Nah I think 13bREW is the best swap is for an rx8
If you want rotary and turbo, the REW is the best option :)
We need to ban together and rotory swap a corvette.
I am a normally sane person
I think a yt channel I follow just did this!
And RX-8 without a rotary... No.
It's just so kuch more beneficial than owning a rotary. Rotaries suck ass period
They are probably lighter than you think pal
I love how people decide what someone buys a car for. I personally like the styling. The rotary? Keep it.
" rev counter"

Why do people insist on talking over music in the background?!! Decent info but annoying straining to hear over the music
rx8 is fine just dont do it on rx7 body...
True :)
the life of a rotary engine is between 50km-100km .. so this is shit...
A v8 is stronger than a rotary? Ok. A 5.7l vs 1.3l :$
That's the point of putting a v8 in mate... a stronger engine to make more power. Why would anyone want to put a 1.3 piston engine inside that makes 90hp? :)
Driven by madness put a 2.6l rotary :) 4 rotor
Cicero Friedrich Put 6.0, 7.0 or 20.0L V8 in. WTF does it matter and WTF is your point?
His point is that if you compare a 2l rotary with 2l piston, the rotary engine easily overpowers the piston engine
Well, given how much fuel that 1.3l drinks, I'd be a bit annoyed at the lack of power...
I dont like v8 i just want v6
Yay 😃 ls for the win lol
I really don't get it why buy an RX-8 just to swap it, the rotary engine is the reason you buy it and if you don't like the engine buy something else!
Maybe because the style and chassis are solid, but the engine platform fucking sucks.
They are CHEAP expecially the blown engine ones!
Carlo Gigante No shit Sherlock
Who tells people the reason THEY bought a car?... The chassis is great ..the engine although unique cost a lot to maintain... Burns a lot of gas ...the reason Mazda doesn't use it themselves..
It would have sold better with a traditional engine..... specifically a mzr
Plenty of RX8s out there at the 100k mile mark being sold as the engine needing a rebuild. I personally like the body style but can't stand the unrelatable and short life of the engine.
rotary engines suck. go with the american v8 and duel exhaust and make it a true muscle car.
