I was showing my game room to a friend once. He picked up a game, like he owned it, and started waving it around motioning to other things in the room with it like it was a laser pointer.
Not being completely clueless, he remarked, "I hear that some Nintendo games are really valuable nowadays, too bad you mainly collect Sega. Are any of these worth anything?"
I replied, "that Sega CD you're waving around is worth about $400." He put the game down like he had been caught shoplifting. I don't think I've seen him touch another thing in that room since.

That's pretty funny. I would have expected someone who knows Nintendo games can have value would have also known Sega games have value. Good thing he didn't break anything. That would have put me on edge.

My wife's cousin came over from Taiwan & came to my birthday party before my wife & I moved in. She was super excited about my collection of games as I found out later she's a big gamer (my wife isn't), this lead to her wanting to come over more while she was visiting Canada. Sadly she didn't get to do that much, so years later when we went to Taiwan for our engagement my wife's cousin & I had a great catch up session on gaming over sushi. I can't wait for the next time that her & her bother get a chance to come to Canada, as my game room will be finished & a nice upgrade from the old, plus now we've got guest rooms!

On the other hand, my 2nd youngest actually knew about tricks for an old system that I didn't even know about lol. Talk about being humbled and proud at the same time.
As for the collecting aspect. I think it a respect thing. My wife's hobby is vastly different than mine with video games. The common ground is I can see the excitement, passion and enjoyment she has and vice versa. So while we may not understand each other's collection completely, we can at least appreciate it nonetheless because we see how happy it makes one and other.

I just had a friend up from another state two weeks ago, and he got to see the game room for the first time. He's an avid collector like I am, and we had a great time going through some of my collection. The part that made me feel the best was when he commented on how great of condition my SNES and N64 boxes are, which is quite the feat since I had them since I was a kid. It makes me sad I don't have more friends local to share my game room with. It's usually just me spending time in there, and I really want to be able to share it with others.

I keep my game collection well maintained. I recently within the last few months sold allot of games that I either don't really like, and/or don't have an attachment to. I could have 4 games per console, and be happy with it. I also see a value in selling what you don't want, for things that you do. Another thing is not to buy more than a couple games at a time. Give yourself time, there is no rush. If you buy allot of games at one time. You are opening yourself up to not enjoying them as much. Love your channel Retro Bird!

When I became interested in retro games in the 2000's, I started to play them via emulation, like many others. But, I got a huge problem with emulation: it's much harder to commit yourself to a new game when it's just a digital file on the harddrive. When you buy a physical game, whether it's retro or modern, you actually want to complete the game, get your moneys worth. It's strange how much the physical and monetary aspect affects your mind. Emulation has a very important role in gaming culture, especially in digital preservation, but for many of us it lacks the essence of these games: the magic that makes us want to complete them, no matter how difficult they might be. So yeah, you could always build a RetroPie-machine with thousands of roms, but you would not have any connection to those files. Thus you would lack the dedication to play them. That's the problem.

One of the most memorable reactions to my collection was at a small local event where I set up a retro game room with my relatively modest collection. I got a fair amount of attention that weekend for a my little pony megaman-style homebrew cart that people were surprised existed.

I've been collecting video games for about 30 years now. My game room holds over 18,000 games, new and old. And if someone comes over and they don't care about video games, I don't even show them my game room. But I love when someone comes down into my game room and I see them turn into a child right before my eyes. My collection is so large the first time they spend hours just trying to see it all.
Children love it too, but they tend to be awed at all the newer games available to them more then the retro stuff. I had a kid crying when his dad said they had to leave. Best story was one time my Bro invited a friend over to my place and none of us told him about my game room. He's a UA-camr and was filming at my house. I was downstairs in my game room playing some games when i hear a voice saying "oh my god" over and over. I turn to see one of his friends had come down in my game room and stunned at what he saw. So I gave him a tour and he turned into a big kid. Another time I saw someone selling a NeoGeo AES and contacted him and asked if he'd take a price that was I wanted to pay. He was firm on the price which was a little high, then I sent him a photo of my game room and told him it was going to a good home and next thing I know he's begging to see the game room in person. I told him if you'll sell it at the price I wanted (which was a fair price btw) He could bring the NeoGeo to my place. And he did, he again turned into a kid and after seeing it was going to someone who loved this stuff he was happy to sell it at the price I wanted to pay.

He had a great time though. I was happy seeing him have so much fun. I was more interested in that I had just gotten a Jag2Snes adapter and plugged the Jag in with Hd Retrovision component cables on the crt and boy howdy did that Nba Jam look nice. @@RetroBirdGaming I have a question for a topic for you possibly for the future. I went to classic Game Fest down in Austin, TX where I reside and had quite a bit of pickups than normal. I grabbed 10 games which is alot for me. I picked up The Blue Variant of California Games on Sega Master System, Golvellius: The Valley of Doom for Sms, Pocky and Rocky for Snes, Power Drive Rally for Jaguar, Mickey Mania for Sega Cd, and then 5 Saturn games. Virtua Cop 2 (Your comment on that made me smile, I have had 2 Stunners with no light gun game to play til now and was thrilled to finally try them out), Quake (Surprisingly awesome game for the saturn), Earthworm Jim 2 ( loving the cd audio and new backgrounds), Enemy Zero (Love the Eno games D and D2), and finally MK Trilogy and the artist for Mortal Kombat was there as a guest and I got him to sign it. Anywho, I don’t normally pick that many games up but I had to seriously alter my Spreadsheet and my Game shelves with the new additions. Took quite awhile with cleaning the games and making them look nice plus the new setup and moving and adjusting things. Wondering if you have a streamlined or good way of doing so. Just took way longer than expected.

The reason why so few people have seen it is because of my family. I use them as a metric and by extension they are emblematic of the wider population. When I'm on reddit or youtube or whatever and see a lot of toys, funko or whatever, which they are usually with video games, but really I see it the same was as someone who doesn't care for video games would see my collection. So yea... totally get what others would think, they really gotta like video games or else it'll seem pretty dumb.

It’s pretty rare I show my game room to anyone besides my wife. I’m very passionate about video games and my close friends have a good idea but I still keep it low key.
Something pretty funny was when my wife(GF at the time) and I first moved in together. I had a game room/nerd room with comics, anime, some sports and my computer. I was really excited about it since it was my first room but when I showed it to them I tried to downplay it and I called it “my office”. Ever since then my man cave to my friends is “mike’s office”

Since my room is retro up to modern, most people are "oooohhhh...aaaaahhhh..wwwwooow"...but everyone seems to have that one friend that is "why do you play video games. You're too old for games"....yyeeeeech. So closed-minded. Because THEY don't care for it, it must mean everyone shouldn't care for it. Shut up.

Great vid and something that sort of happens often when relatives see my game room. Adults like my mother-in-law just look in silence and nod their head and I know they are thinking "why is he doing this?" They seem much more approving of my movie or bundt pan collections (yep I actually have one of those) 😅. Reactions from kids and younger relatives like cousins is usually in the "wow" category and how did you get so many games...except my nieces who called me a hoarder. I replied that it's way to organized to be hoarding. Since I'm moving and will actually have a much larger game room, I can't wait to get it set up and show the collection to friends that are also into gaming and well...get it.

If you want people to pay attention to the subtle nuances, you can have a paper list of highlights, or a section called "rare or special games".
These are ideas that can bridge the gap between a bypassing admirer and a master collector.

Whenever a friend notices my games I typically ask them what games they liked as a kid. If I have any of those games I'll try to get them to play and often I find that they are still very proficient even after all those years. If it's two player they'll often take me to school.

I often identify as the outsider looking in. My best friend is a serious collector in multiple areas and sometimes I find it hard to understand. He has multiple shelves of intricately hand-painted figurines, and while I can appreciate how cool they look and the substantial monetary value they represent, sometimes I don't get collecting what are basically decorations. Still, I have far more respect for those than amiibo trash you buy off the shelf. =D And his GameCube collection has the OEM component cables (which he bought for a couple dollars from a clueless Gamecrazy store), GameBoy Player, 4 Wavebirds, most of the best and rare games on the system, and of course I find myself highly envious of it all, haha. Then while he kept and even grows his collection of Magic cards (which are all extremely valuable now), I got rid of all my Pokemon/Yu-Gi-Oh! cards many years ago (I had multiple original copies of Charizard and Exodia). I just don't have the patience to collect stuff, and on top of that find it generally detestable to amass space-consuming things if they're not being used somewhat regularly.

For me personally my most favorite time showing someone my collection was this girl who became my future Gf. At the time we weren't dating. I was incredibly nervous not just showing her but other friends who I had visiting at the time.bly collection. Unsure what they were going to think of some guy in his late teens with all these retro games.
Any way I had one game in my collection she saw that she absolutely loved as a kid called Harvest Moon A Wonderful Life on the Gamecube which she didn't own anymore. I had a crush on her so I told her she was allowed to keep it & later that night when she was the only one left we played that game together along with Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets because we were too drunk. That's my story. 😅

I'd love to see your game room set up.
Unfortunately my collections are in boxes right now. I do have them neatly organized so I can get to my video games. Due to home construction it unfortunately has to be that way. When it's all done though, I will have a game room. It's very exciting to think about.
I'm not sure about showing it to other people. It's something I've wanted as a sanctuary, an escape from every day life.

My game room (really a corner in my office using a KVM and some custom built shelves to store/display all my big box games and diskettes) has a few generations of PCs in it (386 SX, 486 DX4/100, P233 MMX, and sometimes a turbo XT clone) is usually met with approval, even by casual guests. Most are impressed with the condition of the hardware and ask if they can use it, to which I answer, "30 minute minimum" (nothing I hate more than turning on a PC for 5 minutes just to turn it off - let it warm up, come to life, kinda like an older car) to which most reply "OK!" and jump into DOS 5 all the way to Windows 98SE.

I want to hear the collectors story as to what got them into collecting said item and what is so fascinating about the said item that wanted them to collect.
I may not like some collections out there, and those people might not be, 'my type of person' to get along with, but will respect their passion as I may not understand the logic to the motive.

Last week was the first time that some of my friends came to my house and they're were amused by my game collection, especially with my Xbox original Arcade And was like why do you buy this trash when you can emulate for free and I was about to answer him when other friend just answered him "No seas put@,es obvio a él le gustan los juegos" and the friend that asked didn't say a word about te subject.
Yeah I live in Mexico where a Videogame "colector" can be someone with only e 2 consoles and 5 games because people relate videogames with a grown up child,so it's still a pretty big taboo for the great part of the country to have more than one Game console XD

Well although I do have an assortment of games, from nes, genesis, ps1, 2, 3, gamecube, wii, dos, windows, and now switch, they do all add up, I've only got storage solutions, no real game room. I do however have an app I used to catalog my games (and music cds) collections. I can show these to my coworkers who are into games. They think it's alright. Keep in mind, we all have other pass times and interest so the conversations often move on.

@@RetroBirdGaming That sounds cool. Just letting you know that I dont dislike all pal games in fact some were ported so well that they were nearly indistinguishable from their ntsc counterparts.
I also think it would be cool if you bought up the ps1 classic that for some reason used pal versions of certain games even in the us release.
