  • Whether they're guilty pleasures or games that are "so bad they're good", almost every gamer has some games that they think are bad but still enjoy anyways. In this video I talk about why these types of games are so special to us as well as how they become to be.

As a disclaimer, Altered Beast and Daytona USA (Saturn) are the closest games I have to what I'd personally call "bad but I still enjoy". So, apologies if anybody loves them and is offended. I love them too!

Jersey Devil on the PS1. That game’s camera works against you and the controls are almost as bad but there was a demo of it that came with my PlayStation so I played it all the time. I still remember convincing my friend to jump down a random pit, promising him that a bonus area awaited and then being shocked when there really was a bonus area down that pit.

I don’t know why I enjoy playing the old NES Bible games made by Wisdom Tree. I really do think that they are objectively bad games that are poorly designed. Yet I still like to play them, for some reason. Maybe it is partly because they are based on the Bible. Fun vid, renting games let you try all sorts of things good and bad. However, back in the day I used to buy old Saturn games for the cases then return them in the busted cases. Horrible I know, but one day I got stuck w/one I couldn't return, Grid Runner. So I ended up playing it and well isn't terrible but definitely not great either.

I picked it up for $20 when I was really desperate to play something new, and for some reason it took me 2 back-to-back playthrus to realize I didn't actually like it. I guess the game was scratching a weird itch I had at the time.

It's funny that you bring this subject up because I actually have a few games that fall into this category. First is Jaws for NES, the game gets a bad rep from AVGN and it's honestly not very good in the grand scheme of things but personally I still enjoy that game from time to time. I don't know why, maybe I have a soft spot for aquatic type games because Echo the Dolphin and The Little Mermaid for Genesis can also be called "bad" but enjoyable games to me. A more recent title would be Defender for PS2. Objectively not a good game but I still have fun with it for what it is and not what its based upon. Finally, nearly every game I own for my Panasonic 3DO can fall into this "Stockholm Syndrome" effect. Escape from Monster Manor, Crash N' Burn, Total Eclipse, Guardian War, just name a game lol. They're not good, but I love them all and no one can stop me! :P

My Stockholm syndrome game is most definitely the first TMNT game on the NES. I didn't have many games growing up and I'm a huge TMNT fan. I spent many hours playing this game over the years, and even though I acknowledge its faults I do sincerely enjoy it. I used to get very angry as a kid playing it because it's so hard, but there's something about it that kept me coming back for more.

I have several. Space Pirates and some other 3DO FMV games spring to mind. Game play is messy, the acting is goofy, and often the intended story gets trampled by mechanics that don't allow you to actually watch.
Cybermorph and Battlmorph on Jaguar and Jaguar CD also fit easily. Slow and clumsy, but there's something about the weird atmosphere that I like anyway. Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon and Link: Faces of Evil on CD-i are games I legitimately and unironically enjoy as well. The game play is rough, but they remind me of when I was a kid, and Zelda wasn't so rigidly defined. They have the feel of the old Valiant Nintendo Comics System and the Zelda episodes of the Super Mario Bros Super Show.
In fact, I could go on for hours on this topic...

Jason is going to find you, and you're probably not going to escape. The other is Turok: Evolution for Gamecube.
