    I love that Imelda's main song throughout the movie is La Llorona - a myth about a woman who's husband left her and in retaliation she murdered their children by drowning them in a river. She then spends her entire existence as a ghost, consumed by regret trying to find her lost children and undo what she's done, but not realising or caring that she's just finding new children and drowning them, thinking they are her own.
    Similarly to Llorona, which translates to weeping woman, Imelda made a huge mistake in the past out of pure spite that has only hurt herself and her family for generations.

    • @teamoittomiteton7303
      @teamoittomiteton7303 Рік тому +18

      The Llorona she sings is other Llorona.
      That Llorona is a woman whose husband goes to war but never returns. The day they said goodbye, she was crying a lot, for fear of never seeing him again, and some time later a colleague of her husband's went to tell her the bad news and deliver a letter from him.

    • @sammjaisais7135
      @sammjaisais7135 Рік тому +11

      There are several interpretations of the legend of la Llorona, though. I've heard the version I'm which the man courting her, a native woman, is a rich Spaniard that tells her that he'll marry her someday, but he drowns the children because it would have been a huge taboo back then, and he didn't really have intention of marrying her. I've also heard the version in which she's just a mother who has no money and sees her children suffering from hunger, so what she did was drown the children to end their suffering. There's also the version in which it's a deity crying for her people when the Spaniards come around because she knows her "children" (native people) will suffer immensely because of the conquest. And those aren't all the versions I've heard, just the ones at the top of my head.

    also for the people who dont know dante is a xoloitzcuintle, a breed of mexican dog that in tradition symbolizes a guide for the dead, so that's why dante can be between the two 'realms'
    And pepita (and the monkey) are 'alebrijes', which in mythology is also a spirit guide for the dead and it's basically a combination of very colorful animals.

      Honestly I just thought Dante could see him just because of the general idea of animals or at least cats and dogs being able to see spirits but that's pretty cool.

    • @gatobuho-

      Alebrijes are not spirits, they are works of art, quite contemporary in Mexican culture, I don't know why they were made spiritual guides in the movie.

    Worth. Noting that De Lacruz isn't DEAD-dead yet. People still remember him, and will talk about him for years to come.
    He's just going to be hated until he IS eventually forgotten.

    • @adrianaheiler9794
      @adrianaheiler9794 2 роки тому +31

      One thing I noticed is that even after De la Cruz is exposed in the world of the dead Hector is still rather unknown, wears his normal clothing, is humble and hasn't risen to celebrity status like Ernesto did. He probably doesn't care either as long as he can be with Imelda and Coco, but still, he deserves a little bit of fame for all the years he was shunned and forgotten.

    • @xCoatlicuex
      @xCoatlicuex 2 роки тому +23

      @@adrianaheiler9794 Well I think that it's because that food and gifts are kind of treasures in the other side. Those like De la Cruz who get tons are rich and those forgoten are poor. Now Hector never got currency because he never was able to cross. You can only cross once a year. So this is the FIRTS TIME HE CAN CROSS AND GET HIS GIFTS, I think that by the end of the day he would have colected a good chunck.

    Coco didn't make it another year. But that Dia de los Muertos, after many decades of even mentioning his name upsetting her family, she was finally able to talk about her father and pass on her memories of him, living to living. And because she did, Hector didn't fade away, and was still there to at long last see his daughter again when she got there. And even better, with his story told, and family forgiving him because of it, Hector's photo was placed on the ofrenda. And the look of silent joy he has when, for the first time in a century his foot didn't sink through the marigold bridge and the guards waved him through with an 'I'm happy for you' smile, is so very sweet.

    I’m always so happy and excited when someone first reacts to Coco
    Disney Pixar did such an amazing job at portraying Mexican culture and it always makes me cry and always makes me nostalgic. The first time watching it I remember missing my family so much as I haven’t seen them in years now I am in NY and they are in MX.
    I’m so glad you enjoyed the movie! Impressed you didn’t cry lmao.

    13:59 "it's that nacho libre" no its actually the great El Santo he is one of the most famous luchador in Mexico the reason he's famous it's because he never take off his mask in his life until one time on an interview before he died and he still wore it in his grave, but your are close

    LOL the violence is loving violence. Most Hispanic moms and grandmas weapon of choice is La Chancla (the sandal). I’ve been spanked by many chanclas as a child. It’s all love and just part of my culture 🤷🏽‍♀️

      Yay, abused children normalizing bad, lazy parenting and people not actually putting in the effort to break bad cultural habits. My Indian parents were like that too, doesn’t mean I go around adding to our worst cultural problem. “Love,” stfu. Why do you need to make things worse?

    Actually, I've always heard the "gritos" being referred to as "guacos". Little detail that's a bit of a pet peeve each time I watch the music. Also, I get that the photo thing is to advance the plot, but just so everyone knows, in reality, the pictures are more for the living than the dead. We put them up so we remember them properly. Especially when you take into account "Día de muertos" is a tradition that originated from Native Mexican people, so not a lot of cameras back then. Fun fact: traditionally, one would have to wait at least 3 months (I've also heard a year, I'm not entirely sure) to let the deceased's spirit reach the Mictlan (land of the dead), so if someone died in August, September or October, you can't put up an ofrenda for them, or you risk them losing their way to the Mictlan. The cempazuchitl petals guiding to the ofrenda is actually pretty accurate though. In big cities it isn't exactly possible to actually pave the way from the grave to your actual house, though.
    Sorry for the rant, I just get really excited about this. It's the culture I grew up with and learning about and I keep learning more and more each day! So I like to share what I know with strangers on the Internet

    Poco Loco the song was written to Imelda from Hector...the song basically talks about how Imelda is a bit difficult and sees things always the opposite of hector...she has him guessing all the time but he still loco for her

  • @giga_chad9
    @giga_chad9 6 місяців тому

    One scene I love in the movie was where hector goes to his friend to get Miguel a guitar, it’s here hector takes a shot from the shot glad and puts it upside down, it symbolizes hectors own death we find out later in the movie

    If I'm allowed to suggest, I would highly recommend one of Pixar's latest movies "Soul", it came out last year and the message just hit so much harder considering the times we're living. It got me thinking a lot and it's now one of my absolute favorite Disney movies ✨
