The 2022 Subaru BRZ slash Toyota GR86 are both landing in showrooms here in Australia with pricing hovering around the $35,000 to $40,000 mark, in Australian dollars obviously, but the problem is, both cars are in very short supply, which got us thinking.
For what the new BRZ and GR86 cost brand new, what can you buy on the used market right now for a similar amount of money, that offers the same front engined rear wheel drive platform wrapped in a coupe style body?
Well it turns out there are loads of options and at the end of this video, we want to know which of these you’d buy or would you still go with the new Toyobaru or would you go with something completely different, like a hot hatch of some sort? Let us know in the comments after the vid but remember the rules, has to be front engined and rear wheel drive and has to be as close to a 2-door coupe body shell as possible.

At ReDriven, we’ll be taking you through the pros and cons of a huge range of used cars to see how well they’re going now that they’re a few years old, have thousands of kilometres on the clock, and are coming toward the end of their warranty, or maybe don’t have one at all.
Plus, thanks to our resident mechanic, Jim, you’ll find out what commonly goes wrong with them and what might need to be fixed.
Most importantly, we want to make ReDriven a voice for the most in-the-know used car experts there are...you guys.. See, you’re the ones that actually buy, live with, love and sometimes unfortunately hate the cars we’ll be reviewing.
So we want to hear your thoughts. Hit us up in the comments, or on Instagram and Facebook.
We’d love nothing more than for you to give us as much feedback as possible, so we can make this channel the best it can be.

Love the channel, and love the outtakes. Nice to see a car reviewer focusing on the used car market, which is sadly forgotten about by most professional auto journalism.
I own an MX5, a Porsche 928 and a BMW 135i coupe. All great in their own ways but the MX5 is the only real competitor to the 86/BRZ twins. I've owned a Porsche 944 in the past that would have been pretty similar. Awesome little car and a very connected driving experience even if it was lacking in power.
you’re living the dream
The BRZ feels, to me, like a reimagined 944.
How engaging is 135i to drive? I presume you have to drive a lot faster to explore the limits compared to the mx5 (depending on vintage, I am partial to a NC mx5's with a aftermarket turbo). I wasnt impressed with a 130 I drove (naturally aspirated model) but i was spoilt with 350kw daily driver at the time.
Gapeee
Love this channel I've learnt a lot from it. Keep up the good work. If anyone hasn't checked out those cheat sheets whoa y'all are missing out.
I really really like this channel and I'm glad they are covering this topics.
Great channel! Keep up the great work team!
This video should be titled “5 USED cars you can get instead of the Toyobaru”. I’m spending my $30k on a New GR86 with a bumper to bumper warranty, the latest tech, low cost maintenance and zero miles.
After all the payments, you are at 40k with depreciation.
@@Carlos.Rivera more like under 35k. For the base gr86 at least.
Agreed
New brz here
@Carlos.Rivera to some people
New warranty and less stress is worth the cost
Lexus and Silvia are good shouts! I think 350 and 370Zs are on the way up.
Honda S2000 for VTec goodness?
Agree the S2000 is great particularly when it revs!
Absolutely to the Honda!
I called my Subaru dealer, I waited a month for them to get a shipment of four BRZs.
They arrived on a Thursday, they sold one Friday, the next day then I arrived on Saturday morning and picked up the second.
If you want one just be persistent
Cranking out top 5's again... Keep going!
Damn great video! Exceptional list of cars you lined up, also, loved the outtakes lol.
Was already subscribed.. but those bloopers at the end made me press the like button 🤣🤣
Wondering if you guys would consider doing a video on the pro's and cons of importing a car from overseas. Certain older cars can fall below the luxury car tax threshold, and older performance cars are in far greater supply in places like the UK. Would be interesting to get your thoughts on that option vs buying used in Aus.
Seconded 👍
Literally working on exactly this. It may take a while, we need to get it exactly correct. - AK
Would be interesting with the new rules introduced. Just be aware that UK have rust/corrosion issues that we don't see in Australia due to salting the roads
I'd avoid the Europeans, not because I dislike them, but I like my money and the maintenance is eye watering. Lexus, infiniti, Mazda, or Nissan.
Loads of great choices there. 968 sadly left the list as did the E46 M3 last year but be happy with all those!
You forgot the MB CLK 63 AMG. 354Kw and 610 Nm. I used to have one, it was violently fast, cornered like it’s on rails and was superbly comfortable. Just don’t mention the $8,000 to replace the front rotors after 120km……….another enjoyable video 👍🏻
Excellent video but I’m just so set on the new 86 as a daily fun car
I was considering buying a Subaru BRZ, but after watching your video on the 370Z and driving it, I couldnt resist the Z car
I actually have the exact same situation, I test drove an FRS realized it was slow as balls and then got a 370Z.
Great video. I’ll still wait for the BRZ, it’s just fantastic… anything over 1500 kg would be out of my list..
I'd definitely go with an S15 Silva or maybe a 370Z to keep with the JDM flavour of the new BRZ/GR86!👌
I am currently driving my beloved 2013 IS250 so...yeah it's definitely the RC for me if I had to choose something.
Nice list! I would go for the Lexus!
Went from a 2013 FRS to a 2006 Cayman S 3 years ago. No regrets however the GR86 is at the top of my list for a future replacement.
The GR86 once pricing announced for Oz will have an insane value proposition.
Nice. List
Please do a review on the s15
Also happy to donate my s15 if you’re ever in Adelaide and when I’m there at the same time
Given the rules breaking throughtout, I'd rather keep my DC2R Integra than buy a Toybaru 86. But my top picks from your list are the Sylvia and E36 M3.
The RC for sure
I wouldn't call Silvia's cheap anymore unfortunately, even older MX5s are being price gouged in AU.
I had a shot for every time you said toyoburu or brz/gr86.. now im hammered and bought a yaris.. i thought it had 2 doors..
Hell Yeah, i would defintely grab an S15 Silvia.
Test drove the ‘22 today (thanks Suba Geelong) - can definitely feel the extra torque, but the steering feels light, slightly numb and very electric compared with the previous gen.
I’ve owned a 2013 BRZ for nearly 9 years and 100% agree with this about the steering on the new model during a test drive, (thanks Subaru Doncaster). My main gripe with the new car, I’m surprised more reviewers haven’t picked this up.
@@zod9765 near every review I’ve seen mentions it but seems to not put a ton of emphasis on it. I’m 100% getting but not looking forward to that in particular
I have to look up the 200SX. In the States, I could’ve sworn it was a Sentra. The pics shown look like the 240SX instead. Anyway, another great video! I would opt for the 200/240SX and then the GR86.
For the money you'd drop on the Tobaru twins I'd rather spend it on getting something like Lola and using whatever is left over to keep her on the road.
A pleasant surprise seeing you guys drop this video today as was only expecting tomorrow's video as the only other upload for the week.
An idea that I had for 2 videos which I think you'll find fun and challenging to do is the best and worst vehicles for tradies that aren't 4x4 or utes.
Looking forward to tomorrow's video and any unexpected uploads you may do lol.
How about a Holden/Pontiac/Vauxhall Monaro... They're excellent cars but they aren't available in every country...
The 370Z would be my pick and maybe... just maybe a Mustang if I couldn't find ToyotaRu
A great list of choices as always
Nailed it 370, rc350, s chassis
Why are there a bunch of Yaris’s in your shop? Not hating just curious.
125i coupe manual with the NA 3.0
How about a GR Yaris with the front drive shafts removed?
Front engine, check
2 door coup body, check
RWD, check
Price, fail
I’m cross shopping the gr86 with a 2 door ford bronco. Which one do I do
Is the BRZ/GR86 perhaps the best car-share agreement that I can think of? Even the 323/Laser and 626/Telstar was just a case of one maker does the work, the other just sticks on a badge... especially in its final generation.
Certainly beats the bejesus out of the boring Toyota/Holden rebadging, or the Pintara/Corsair...
If I could I’d get a evo 9 instead but I need reliability and something I can finance for, currently I daily a built hawkeye wrx and it’s never broken down but I know her times coming
Lexus without a doubt, even the isf
Easy choice for me - M235i or 435i. That engine is such a treat.
Steering is absolutely dead though. :/
After seeing how much power some of those BMW sixes can make I think I’d go down the 140 road
Mustang for me. But I’d be tempted by a Boxster. In fact….I am tempted by a Boxster.
I know it doesn’t fit the criteria but still it’s in the ballpark price wise.
PS. When is the review of the Mustang coming?
Hint hint….
There's a lot of options for power and performance in the used car market @ that price range, but of course some will be 4doors and such. Like a 2011+ ISF. Totally not saying that because I own one.
Congrats. They have gone up at least $10k since COVID. I have been looking in horror....
You could have mentioned the CLK55 AMG as an alternative to the C63 which would have complied with your own rules
30k to 40k buys you a lot of Honda S2000 or Integra Type-R nowadays. The FC RX7 could also be a budget option if you're looking to build rather than buy.
All good options there! I went through a similar list a few months back and ended up buying a E87 135i M performance with the 7 speed DCT (can't find manuals and the DCT is amazing trans). So much smooth engine punchy torque (winning formula in a daily where you're not racing it at max revs mostly), good chassis with firm and controlled damping, meaty steering and massive overkill brakes front and rear. Not too far off and M car, excepting no LSD. Test drove a mint low km sprintex supercharged first gen BRZ (asking 30k). Was good, supercharged engine was just right, but it wasn't that amazing steering and chassis wise as the hype. But certainly good still and a supercharged 1st gen is a great option. Mustang - yes, driven a fair bit previously and would love, but too much for my budget. MX5 - no go and 2 seats. 370Z - also never tried as 2 seats, but would be nice to try.
You would be disappointed in a 370Z. Trust me
If you want a great small hatch, try out BMW 130i (200kW, 3Ltr 6cyl) great prices now, go really hard & handling is amazing. I love mine ☺️
Not a coupe but you can pick up a pretty spicy Lexus ISF. They sound the business too.
I know of 8 people that had brz toyota 86 for less then a year they all sold it and after driving one i agree. The mazda is a billion times more fun.All these options are more fun
Would love a new 86, but I've got deposits down at multiple dealers trying to find a red manual, but apparently Toyota just decided not to make any
there's a ton of those, go online, I've seen so many
@@EarlofBusterbrook you've seen dealers list cars that are already reserved or spoken for, not vehicles that are available for pickup.
@@Luxumbra69 ive seen ready to buy, theres just not very many red ones so yes on that
M235i ftw.
I've driven The nd1 mx5 countless times and the car lacks in few areas.
1_ Interior = seats have literally no bolstering and steering wheel is made out of a cheap plastic material that has no grip.
2_ stock suspension has a lot of body roll.
3_ Lastly the motor has no character, it's not that slow but it's nothing like a honda vtec or toyota vvtli.
Surprised you didn't mention the Mazda rx8! That would be my choice.
My dodge challenger rt with corsa extreme exhaust is amazing
m235 would be my choice from this list possibly....but when factor in a factory warranty, cost of ownership nd repair, and fuel prices. Many of these other offering become less applealing. i would honestly go for the 86 and not look back.
Mmm also the jaguar f-type might be an option
Love my s15, would get rc350 and super charge the dog.
The BMW 2 Coupe for me please!
Currently cross shopping new gr86 vs mustang GT PP1 for 3k less
All I find are auto gr86 rotting on the lots already and manuals with crazy markups.
M.I.A.T.A ND2 with Ohlins 😁
If you buy a new 86 or Subaru you will know it hasn't been trashed by boy racers. An older BMW will cost a lot more than the purchase price.
Would still buy an 86. Would also consider i30n or i20n
I sold my 2017 Toyota 86 and forked out the extra 20k for my new 2023 GTS GR86. Had to order before I knew the final specs. New upgraded motor is great but I no longer have any storage space, no satellite navigation and no spare wheel. Oh and I got the manual so missed out on some very key safety features only found in the automatic. I drive in rural areas all the time with no phone coverage so apple car play maps is useless to me. Found myself buying a map book for the first time in about 15 years and have to consider buying an aftermarket head unit for navigation. Really shocked by the downgrades in functionality Toyota. Would have bought the BRZ had I known.
Series 2 rx8? Better of the rx8s. Could pick it up in gt/r3 trim and have money to spare for the inevitable rebuild down the track.
I live in Europe and the GR86's availability here will be pretty limited, so this is my thinking if I fail to get one:
- No 2 seaters. No extremely limited boot space. This will be my only car.
- No old cars like the Silvia, because they are overpriced here (bc rare) and the government made a nightmare to tune cars.
- No hybrids (like, you can only get the hybrid Lexus RC here). I don't have where to charge and I'm not into "battery draggers" (translated, that's how we call no-plug hybrids here.)
So, what am I left with?
- V8 Mustang. The downside is too much spending on fuel and tires.
- A BMW with the new turbo inline 6 engine (the Supra's one, the new 40i's of the world). The problem is I'm tired to death of BMW's and a lack of exclusivity.
Then, I would be moving away from the sports car category to a more practical car with a bigger engine. I wouldn't get a second hand GT86 because doing forced induction is illegal in my country.
Lexus ISF. 4 door V8 version. Super reliable
@@richardggeorge I like it, but it's not available in Spain. The old model is super rare. The only high performance Lexus in Spain is the LC 500 Cabrio. The coupe is only offered as hybrid here!
Abarth 124 thanks.
Good list. 👍
best of luck, if your taller than 5 foot 10...
@@brycem0 Oh yea. Forgot about that. 🙄
@@CathodeRayNipplez fiat pop 500C?
@@hasenpfefer7 Maybe not a Pop but wouldn't say no to a 500 S Manual or the Abarth versions. Quirky is cool.
Infinity QR 50 or 60 red sport.
987 Cayman, m235i, c63 coupe, silvia, in that order
In Germany only the MX-5 is an option. For People who need a bit more space like you get in the GR86, this car is the first choice. But i agree that the MX-5 is a very cool car.
But for the price of a GR86 there is no car in Germany that has the same character like the GR86. The Audi TT i see as alternative to but in Germany the Audi TT costs over 20k more than the gr86 for the same horsepower and equipment. So not really an option.
Spend a little bit more and get an e92 m3? I would!
A BMW hey, what could possibly go wrong?
Nissens?
Save the manuals and buy a gr86
As always, great vid. But there’s only one true worthy competitor for the GR86, and that’s the BRZ 😆😆
Honda S2000 is my pick
i struggle to justify buying a 20-30 year old silvia for the same price as a brand new 2022 GR86...
Mx5 too small and trunk space
370z felt interior was aged...
Mustang didnt want the 8cyl... and people tend to frown upon the eco
Lexus doesnt have a manual transmission
Bmw no manual... plus i didnt want the repair/ maintenance costs...
My personal criteria was
New preferably
Manual
Fit 2 tall people and 2 large duffel bags
Newer alternative to the supra, 200sx or a porsche cayman.....
So a new brz worked for me
Genesis Coupe most def
I have a soft spot for the Mazda. BTW it is Zed. With a Mustang and or a BMW I would lose my licence.
Personally, I'd rather buy one of those ReDriven water bottles if I could find where to order one...
Haha. Stay tuned, mate. We’ll share a link shortly
Kia Stringer. classic in the making
Too many doors for this category unfortunately. - AK
No Supra mention! I'd have the Lexus 4 sure!
Pricing here is well north of the BRZ/86 pair Neil. - AK
yep just bought one but delivery is in may :(
There were alot of cars shown but which one?
@@hasenpfefer7 haha the brz
BRZee? Geez mate...
BR Zed.
Used GR86 is all you can get in the UK, at the price close to a used Supra 2.0. Ouch!
or just buy Nissan Silvia Spec R S15 ??
It's what 86 should be, a cheap affordable Front-Engine Rear-Wheel-Drive 4-cylinder-Turbo Sportcar and it exist since 20 years ago
From all the cars you mentioned only the miata can be directly compared to the new brz/86 that’s the absolute truth! Maybe the bmw 2 series also but again not exactly the same kind of cars.
BRZ all Day Long.... the rest are costly maintenance and requires expensive services. Some could go over $2.0k AUD on some services. You will end up spending well over 4k to 5k A year maintenance.
Agree with everything bar the Silvia. Overpriced, bent, UA-cam gloried crapper. They shouldn’t be over 25k aud.
What about a Ford Capri 2.8i, and swap it for a V8.
budget is 40k, not 80k.
Pass. I will keep my 22 BRZ..!!
But I’m tryna save gas now 😩
rx8 with £25k left for fuel and engine rebuilds lol
RX8
Mustangs can handle well?
The videos I've seen on UA-cam, they tend to go into trees or onto on coming traffic.
