You know what upsets me the most on the whole controversy with Hellena Taylor? You know what makes me ANGRY about it? The way she treated her fellow voice actors like a fucking joke. The way she treated the movement to give voice actors more respect like an absolute joke. I believed her,I did and it turns out she fucking cried wolf.
Voice actors deserve respect. They deserve better payment,they deserve to be hired for their job instead of being replaced by every celebrity under the sun (*looks at the Mario movie*),they deserve proper credits. And the credibility of that fair fight thrown into the fucking trash all because ONE woman decided to get greedy (on top of using her money for horrible causes!). It just makes me so fucking upset,I hate it
No one likes being duped myself included. Even when they get their hit of karma, when the people who sided with the crocodile tears find out about it makes them feel like an idiot for falling for it (again, I was a sucker for these moments as well). Taylor made the biggest mistake of backstabbing a fellow VA and shooting herself in the foot by admitting her claim was bullshit.

Even David Hayter (Snake's VA) doesn't go after Kiefer Sutherland (Big Boss and Venom Snake on MGSV VA) and didn't throw him under the bus.
I like how you blame one person for your point falling apart instead of taking the slightest glance in the mirror to realize how bad you and all the VA celebs that pledged allegiance to her made it worse for yourselves. The only point your "movement" made to the public is that you're a mob who assembles immediately at the first accusation, with zero evidence, and actively disregarding multiple instances of damning evidence that prooved that she was lying even before bloomberg got involved.
Oh and the fact you were all gung-ho about hoping underpaid coders and programmers lose their jobs as a sacrifice to say that voice actors must be entitled to over $250 an hour.
Outside of the twittersphere your movement was a joke and the game shot up to be a best seller on amazon right after she made her claim and even before she was exposed.
An add on to #3: Voice actors definitely do deserve better, but I feel like this year was especially bad for them. In addition to the whole Helena Taylor debacle, we had the passings of Billy Kametz and Kevin Conroy this year. Though even then Crunchyroll dedicated a whole section to the app to Billy when he passed, and there was the Suicide Squad trailer at the Game Awards that was dedicated to Kevin, and shortly after Geoff announced that he would be back one final time for Suicide Squad, since he finished recording before his passing.
In one channel, I used the Bayonetta 2 Game Over scene to describe Hellena Taylor's current rep.
I think suicide squad might not do well given the fan reaction to Gotham Knights and the fact the writer seems to have some issues (They made Deadshot black to match the DCEU despite being set in the Arkham Games continuity where he was white. A tweet claimed the Deadshot in the Arkham Games was a copycat which is nonsencial given he was hired by two different people 9 years apart who would be able to afford to hire the real Deadshot.)

The Scarlet and Violet mini rants hit the nail on the head perfectly.
The game was SO DAMN CLOSE to being amazing. But they just HAD to hit that November deadline. The game is great. Easily one of the best games of the series. But the performance and glitches hold it back from being THE best. It really should’ve gotten an extra month or two in a oven.

Sounds to me like my second favorite franchise is now getting rushed like my first favorite franchise, Sonic the Hedgehog, used to be with Sega. Hopefully Sega will never go back there again.

Sega still rushes Sonic. The difference is that at least now with Pontaff gone, it feels like they're genuinely trying to do the blue blur justice and make good games even under tight deadlines. The same can't be said for GamefrEAk. There's no soul or care in the world from them towards Pokemon. It's a cashcow to them, and they no it. The only thing they'll put "effort" into is pushing the shitty mobile games and merch.

The thing that tipped me off that Hellena Taylor was lying was when I looked up who both she and Jennifer Hale were and I found that Hale is a more renowned VA than Taylor, and ergo would logically cost more. So if the issue was about money like Taylor suggested, why would Platinum Games go for someone who would be more expensive? I recognize in retrospect that logic probably isn't completely sound, but still, that's just how I figured it out.
For me it was that, the fact that both Hellena and Hale were in the same union, and that Hellena went on record on previous interviews stating how much she was paid for bayo 1-2 that made everything feel sketchy to me. Hellenas twitter responses to the Bloomberg report only solidifies it to me that she was lying.
I was distrusting when I had a feeling Hellena Taylor was acting like she was more important to Bayonetta than the people who actually made the games and character.
Lots of things was questionable. I do not know why people especially voice actors immediately took her side. She didn’t provide hours she worked, negotiations, she says that bayonetta took her 16 hours to record for both games cause she that good(from her own mouth), Jennifer hale and yuri lowenthall, grey delise who are way expensive then hellena still stayed on this project.
She never once provided actual proof. While I understand voice actors do get screwed over, they still had the responsibility to wait for evidence and see what the actual contract was since many have said that they sign a contract if they didn’t like the deal either they negotiated or refuse the role. Unfortunately the voice actors ruined their own credibility

Blizzard, and by extension Activision who bears the responsibility of the ones who should be holding their leash, seems to be trying to spill over into causing actual death and destruction in the real world at this point.
As time goes on, Kotaku genuinely seems like one of those websites where a good portion of their writers actively doesn’t want to be game journalists, in the sense that they never really wanted to cover games in the first place. Call it a crack theory but the game industry seems to be the resting ground for journalists who want to write for other major mainstream publishers or news outlets, but for some reason or another they couldn’t get a job in said field of journalism (be it a lack of experience, connections, skill, etc.). So ultimately they resort to getting a job in the field of game journalism because it’s effectively the easy way to break into the industry as a whole, regardless of whether or not they actually care about said subject matter.
Again it’s only a theory, but it serves as an explanation for the overabundance of unnecessary opinion pieces and why so many articles seem to stray away from the topic of video games in general.

I remember I used to give them a chance when others wouldn't, but that Metroid Dread article really made me leave.
From what I heard, sometimes the easier articles were more likely written by bots that were following headlines. It's kind of happens
i give the over/under a 60% chance this is the case, 20% they are just professional activists being hired for the purpose of producing clickbait content for ads, 10% they are from the old already existing entertainment industry or other sites who did the same thing I.E. Salon or Gawker, 8% chance they are just freelancers getting their fake stories being picked up and sold by big publications for commission pay by the boomer management who either doesn't know better or is actively using ragebait for money and political propaganda with the remaining 2% being actual journo's who want to do good work but cannot due to the publications reputations and the same boomer upper management wanting more crisis and clickbait over anything actually newsworthy.
At this point i don't think game journalists give it a crap about what they do. They just want to be paid and not be a credible source. The debacles with Sonic Frontiers this year was proof of that,
I'd have bumped Helena Taylor up a position. Because not only did she do all this shit and essentially blacklist herself forever, she also set the "fair pay for voice actor" movements back. Because the next time it comes up, people will just be "Look who's being an entitled actor, just like Helena Taylor."
Pretty much. The movement lost its credibility. Plus while hellena Taylor deserves majority of the hate we can’t deny that the voice actors who took her side are also to blame. They immediately believed her without thinking when she brought zero evidence. They unfortunately ruined their own credibility themselves

Even though the bigger L was losing many voice actors of our childhood, including Jason David Frank and Kevin Conroy, the fact that EA (and Nintendo) are smart and not doing NFT's make them look like the devil having redemption, and the holy Nintendo not committing sin
To be fair on Nintendo, whenever there are new market schemes they are the last to try if not at all. The downside is that when they join the successful new practices like extended DLC and online multiplayer, their servers and marketing are out of date. The upside is that they could potentially dodge a bullet when they notice a bad idea (the mobile games were certainly more misses than hits). As far as EA, I think they saw how easily NFTs can lose their value and being cynical is bad enough but they don't want to risk easily losing money.

Honestly it’s not just Kotaku doing that kind of crap. Especially with trying to sabotage Nintendo. I mean remember when Kotaku insisted people pirate Metroid dread instead of buying it? Frankly it’s no wonder that Nintendo is so paranoid about copyright.
I'm genuinely convinced that all the glitches and bugs that people have ran into with Scarlet and Violet are mostly in the digital versions, as plenty of my friends, myself included, all have the physical versions and I've either hardly heard about any of that stuff from them or haven't ran into myself during the time with the games.
That's not to say the games are flawless ((I've had very minor frame dips and like the occasional texture plip in the background)), nor am I defending TPC here. I do genuinely think that Scarlet and Violet could have had more time in the oven, at least a few months for quality assurance, bug fixing, etc. But I don't think ALL versions of the games are the mess that people say they are.

Happy New Year! What a better way to start off 2023 with talking about the fails of 2022 in gaming eh? While I don't think 2022 was a bad year for gaming (honestly I thought it was a pretty good year tbh with what came out) it still has its well known and utter failures from certain companies, people, etc.
Let's see a wins video at some point.
Just like last year, I both dreaded and looked forward to the yearly Fails video. There so many events throughout the previous year I thought to myself:
"I know that this screw up will end up on Josh's fails list"
And on a side note: keep doing the musical entries for your yearly Fails, I freaking love them. Great video Josh!
The Helena Taylor situation kind of reminds me of a small time voice actor on Instagram forgot her name, but she was the voice behind the little pog champ meme if you know what that is, basically the short version of her controversy is that she scammed a bunch of people by telling them she was injured or whatever where then through reveal the DM’s, she lied about it all and got a lot of flack from fellow voice actors on the app. Thankfully, I think she returned some of the money, but yeah, needless to say in her account got deleted
Seeing what happened to both Team Fortess 2 and Pokemon last year really makes me all the more thankful that Sonic Frontiers came out so great and polished at the end. 2022 REALLY was the best year Sonic's had in a long time when you add in his second movie, Prime show, and Origins games to it.
It's also still amazing that we live in a time where EA of all companies is looking more like an saint compared to certain other companies on the list in recent years. Truly an interesting time.
Don't forget the IDW comics that has given us new threats like Surge and Kit, while having the cahones to kill off a major villain and have him STAY DEAD in the form of Dr. Starline

With things are going currently, it wouldn’t be surprising that Valve would outright shutter TF2 for good.
Sega still needs to rebuild trust and reform their strategies a bit more. I also want them to give their non-sonic games a chance of a reboot like NiGHTs or Crazy taxi.
Visiting my brother so I’ll miss the premiere, but I hope everyone enjoys, and I’m very intrigued to see where this goes. Pretty sure I know most of these just wondering how high/low they place.

It's a shame that VA's lost a lot of trust because of Miss Taylor's stunt. It's hard enough for voice actors these days where even established character roles can be recast simply because the VA is unionized. Take Kyle McCarly. He voiced Mob from the "Mob Psycho 100" anime for two seasons yet was not recast in season 3 simply because he was unionized. For those of you not familiar with the anime fanbase, McCarly also lent his voice to several video games as well, the most notable being 9S from "Nier: Automata". And considering Automata is getting an anime adaption, a not insignificant part of me fears McCarly will not be recast, which is insane given his performance is what really brought Automata to life in terms of character development and story.

I think we need a Wins list as well, and trust me, Sonic already gave us major wins last year with the IDW comic, the 2nd Sonic movie being a massive hit even beating out the 3rd Fantastic Beasts film by being at number 2 when The Bad Guys made their debut at number 1, Sonic Frontiers was a major hit after a DISASTROUS first look courtesy of IGN, and more of the game was shown that now we have a road map for updates this year for what we're getting, INCLUDING a new story with more playable characters, imagine exploring the Starfall Isles as Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Sonic Prime made it's debut last month

27:38 I remember Dunkey talking about how people would say Activision and EA games are the worst and yet they are the highest selling. So, it's really just telling.
On an upside with the whole 343 situation, the company got a long overdue management restructure back in September. The new Studio Head of 343 is Pierre Hintz. The same guy who led the team that fixed the Master Chief Collection a few years back.
It also came out that Halo Infinite's bad launch was pretty much one man's fault. Chris Lee, who kept forcing the devs to add more stuff to the game, causing it to fall further and further behind on schedule, and then lying to upper management making the game seem like it was doing much better than it was. This was all unraveled with the infamous 2020 Craig demo. He was fired a month later and Halo veteran Joseph Staten took his place.
So I would definitely say that Halo is in much better hands now, and I feel like Halo Infinite's sparse content updates are a thing of the past with all the content the Winter Update added, along with Season 3 being just around the corner
It's good to know that Halo's getting back on track if this is true because with the bumps in the road it has for a while now, it needs some sort of change for the better.
There's a lot of stuff Josh said over Halo and the show that has been clarified but he did mostly hit the nail on the coffin.

In regards to the third entry, them getting Jennifer Hale of all people to replace was the big hole in her story because Jennifer being picked should have gotten the union involved. Not to mention they had the big money for such a big name like her but not Helena? But now it's safe to say that Helena's career is over.
Edit: small correction to the Diablo Immortal's gem thing, there was an update on that. It's *$500k+* because it turns out that once you make out a five star rarity gem, it unlocked five more slots. Each.
Not even counting this is all for one character.
@@Excalibur-Sonic That too. She was niche but those that knew her loved her. Not to mention Helena looks even stupider because there was another Bayo game announced at the game awards. While VAs definitely deserve better pay and even royalties for their time and effort (think Mario), Helena was being offered average pay, offered even more when she asked, then trashed it.

I hope we get more Elemental themed Top Ten Boss Lists. Like Top Ten Earth Bosses. Bosses which are themed or focused with the element of earth, which includes the use of rocks, sand, crystals, and minerals, and so on. I have a few suggestions like Earthrock Trilobyte from Megaman X7, Sandman from Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions, and also Titan from Final Fantasy 14.
Well with how Josh and Ari are gonna be parents in a couple months, I wouldn't mind a Top 10 Videogame Parents list

Ok fine he does send his children to get stomped on every day of the week but look at the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls trailer and that scene in Mario and Rabbids where Bowser contacts his son on his holiday to check on him and tell me he's a Pokemon dad.
I'm so scared that these fails can become even worse next year if they don't understand how to put a stop at their errors, but as you explained "there are more fools than stars in the sky".
For the Halo fail, I can't believe the producers of the TV series didn't get the help from Rooster Teeth in trying to create a great story for the show (at least learn something from Red vs. Blue). Square Enix in Number 5 is acceptable, since your examples provided us with its year's ups and downs, and the story about Hellena Taylor lying about her reasons of not being in Bayonetta 3, boycotting the game and downgrading Jennifer Hale only led to her losing everything she had - it's almost certain that she will never work on anything again thanks to this.
Honestly given everything RT has done lately I think it was for the best
No reason to be scared since that's all you can expect from AAA companies and stupid/vile people nowadays.

As I keep saying everytime I watch these lists, I seriously think you should make a wins list as well, so that it doesn't seem like the video game industry's going down the toilet everytime I watch these videos. Hell, I can think of a few entries right now, in no particular order, that being Elden Ring (never played it but I've seen my brother play it and it's top-notch) and Cyberpunk finally being playable and gaining popularity again thanks to that and the anime

This’s also the year where Bayonetta 3 finally released and wasn’t half-bad despite its controversies, indies got plenty of gems with Stray, Tunic, Neon White, Freedom Planet 2 and Cult of the Lamb, Kevin Conroy being honored at the Game Awards by revealing that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will be his last role as Batman, Sonic having his first genuinely great 3D game in 11 years with Frontiers, and getting plenty of great or at least fun videogame adaptations in a single year with Uncharted, Sonic 2, The Cuphead Show and Cyberpunk Edegrunners.

Few other wins:
Xenoblade 3 being the highest selling game of the franchise and just generally being really frigging good
Persona 5 Royal finally being ported to all consoles
Guilty gear strive getting cross play
The reveal that 40k Space marine is getting a sequel after everyone for years thought it wouldn't happen
Street fighter 6s demo showed huge promise for the franchise
New kirby game was very fun and cute.

Here are my takes on all that happened.
10. Quality control is *fluttershy yay* important! Also Scarlet And Violet is the Assassins Creed Unity of Pokemon. Yes, I'm going there.
9. All I gotta say on this is a little ditty called It Costs This Much (Cause It Takes Me *redacted* Hours). Artist people don't just make stuff because it's fun. They also need to eat and pay taxes like everyone else.
8. Kotaku is the gaming equivalent of TMZ. Yeah, they suck but a clock rings right twice a day. Also, Stray is about a cat and robots (and I love that one of the robots knits. And Seamus' design makes me think of Hunter S Thompson. Yeah I know it's random as Hades that my mind went to a 70s writer. At the same time, at least it's not "This game where you're a cat is racist.")
7. Fluffernutter Ubisoft. Just, fluffernutter. Ubisoft.

Aside from the whole voice acting polemic with Helena Taylor, i still liked and consider Bayonetta 3 one of the biggest and best games of 2022 EVER. And it is even getting a new prequel game this year with Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and The Lost Demon and more sequels in the future.

@@christiandauz3742 I'm late to party but have you played Astral Chain? It's another platinum exclusive for switch. Bayo 3 combat borrowed a lot from that game. It's overwhelming if you go in blind. I was quite surprised at first but instantly knew how it all worked.

If the gaming industry, by some miracle, ever reaches a point where you don't need to make these lists you could consider making a top successes of a given year (honestly you could do one anyways to balance out the bad news).
Don't worry, Scarlet and Violet will get DLCs in the near future. Hopefully, some bugs will be patched in the process. Also, the main reason Scarlet and Violet are like this is because this was in development after Sword and Shield were done, but before Legends Arceus. After the success in the latter game, the dev team behind Scarlet and Violet changed some mechanics around and were rushing to meet the deadline.

Then they should have waited another year to release it. How many games it will take before the general populace starts to feel burnout? They literally released three games in one year: an half assed, low quality remake of Gen 4, and two games lacking plenty of polish in the graphics and perfomance departments (and arguably in the content department as well). Also, DLC shouldn't be used to fix basic stuff like grapical problems, glitches, and low amount of content (seriously, Scarlet and Violet has no postgame, not even the freaking Battle Tower), it should be used to supplement an already polished, full game.
I would legit wait three years for a polished, meaty pokemon game instead of getting a bunch of rushed, undercooked games.

Thing is that they can't. The anime, manga, TCG and even merch branches are all connected to the Main games and depend on said games releasing on schedule. Delaying the games would meant having to modiffy the schedule of the entire franchise and that is way more problematic than is worth it.

I find the glitches in Scarlet and Violet as a double edged sword. On one hand it is ridiculous this even slipped up the way it did considering this has been pretty flawless run as a game series. On the other hand, I had a ton of laughs with the glitches. Yes my progression and other stuff got messed with but some of the glitches had me rolling with laughter. Matter of perspective I guess.

Number 2 was the best reference to a historic piece of UA-cam I could have asked for.
I would like to remind people that we have the power to change things for the better if we care enough, work together on the problem, put in the work and the time, and overcome any hurdles that may appear, these companies/people think they are too big to fail but as we say the bigger they are the harder they fall, Don't give up.
I enjoyed playing Pokémon Violet. The only few glitches that I got was when I got stuck outside the walls of a cave after I encountered a Pokémon, and the infamous backwards long jump glitch.
Today, the game is getting better when the updates fixed some of the bugs.

I suspected Helena Taylor was full of sh*t from the very start. From the way she threw her fellow VA under the bus, the way she talked about how SHE was the only person who deserved to voice Bayonetta, how she demanded a boycott that would've harmed the floor level employees FAR more than anyone that actually had the power to pay her more money, and even the way she spent a LOT of time talking about her credentials, it felt like everything she said had a selfish tinge to it. And it turned out to be true. She didn't care about anyone else, she wasn't concerned for other VAs in the industry, she only wanted more money that she felt she was entitled to, and was willing to weaponize the fan base and a genuine issue that many in the industry suffer from in order to get what she wants. Then, after harming her fellow VAs through her lies, she just ups and leaves the VA industry to go back to theatre, figuratively leaving a big steaming dump on the rug before leaving the room. I'm glad she's left the industry, because what she did is so disingenuous and disgusting that I would find it very hard to actually touch any game that worked on ever again. Good riddance, I hope the door hit her in the *ss on the way out.

I think it's because of the roasting/critic culture meets 'good is boring' mentality. It's easier to just see the negatives and be hateful, and it guarantees more viewership. This is not just 'content creator are just lazy', this is also how most audience would default on thinking.
Plus, when success videos are not handled well, they tend to sound cringe and blind worship, so it's a risky venture.
And sad to say, Josh has garnered such a massive followers for this kind of content that he might get into trouble if he turns his back against them. But still, it's up to him whether he wants to take the risk or not.
Tbh fair he already showcases the wins of various companies and game in every other top then that isn't the fails lists.

It's important to remember that Pokemon has gotten so big that gamefreak is only one piece of it now. If they do a delay that pushes everything else further like the anime, card game, and merchandise. So this is likely a case of gamefreak being the creative developers but with stuffy suits for bosses who don't know crap about how to make a good game. I'm not condoning a rushed development cycle but I've always understood that the main problem goes higher up than just Gamefreak. And if people ever want to see change they need to point their rage at the right sources not do the guilt by association thing. Plus honestly the glitches are not that bad, infact I find it hillarious when I walk into one of the towns and see an npc sliding across the floor in the distance. The core gaming experience has not been hindered for me in the slightest, and the positives are the game are just way too good for me to spoil it on minor techincal issues. Especially when it's entirely likely people are modding the game to look worse than it actually is. Not everyone who has a problem with the techincal stuff mind you but a good chunk would definetly be that desperate and they know who they are.
To be frank, many of the fails on this list were things I expected like everything Squeenix did this year, Pokemon SV, and Helena Taylor. But when we got to Activizzard, my soul almost DIED. Bobby Kotick and anyone who agrees with him are heartless monsters. Hell, that entire company should quite literally burn to the ground for what they did. Just like EA, they're not going to stop as long as they make money from. We as gamers-NO. We as PEOPLE need to take a stand here and now. If Microsoft isn't going to do anything about this, we have to be the ones to bring them down. No more buying their products. Even if you are a die-hard fan of whatever IP from Activizzard, including things like Crash Bandicoot, we can't let this continue because as long as they get money, it will continue. There's only one thing outside of people rioting that will get their attention, and that's to drain them of every penny they have in their pockets.
um yes Microsoft are, they're going to get rid of Kotick which is why I hope the merger goes through. Boycotts don't work, only negative publicity does.

Call of Duty used to be something great which is why it has the player base it does. That’s why now more than ever people need to wake up and realize the evil that goes on in this company.

Ubisoft literally did the same thing that a lot of content creators and Twitter users did: they attacked Elden Ring calling it a bad game when they probably didn't even play much of the game to begin with.

I can sympathize with video game VAs who get underpaid, but that doesn't mean you should throw people like Sam from Totally Spies under the bus just because she replaced you in a video game role you've treasured for all these years, because she was likely a victim in this case too, and she might've also been paid only four grand by whoever made that game. (That is, IF this is actually true and not complete BS.) The point I'm trying to get across is, if you feel like you've been treated unfairly by corporate hacks, take it up with the executives who should take at least some responsibility for their actions, not the person they hastily filled in for your vacant role.

Honestly the biggest issue is how many people including voice actors immediately took hellena side without her providing any information. After the whole amber heard thing, evidence is important jumping on the bandwagon and getting information wrong ruined the credibility and they only have themselves to blame. They have to ask them for non contract numbers to block their number for sms protection which anybody can ask to unblock (it's what I did)

Seeing Activision/Blizzard topping the list is not surprising to me. And I had classmates who were considering working for Activision/Blizzard, I just hope that they're seriously, and I mean SERIOUSLY, reconsidering their choices.
