I agree, this song should have been a huge hit for her when it came out (1988, I think). But after she only got up to #20 with Soul Kiss in 1985, you could tell her Top 40 days were over. But we, as Oliva fans, can bask in the glow that she had the biggest hit of the 1980s.
Such a strange song because the lyrics are sad but the tune and orchestration are so upbeat. But it's perfect for ONJ's voice--this should have been a hit.
"(Livin’ in) Desperate Times" had similarities the lyrics were sad and set to upbeat dance music. "Tragedy" by the Bee Gees had that going on, although it was a super hit in the late 1970s.
Thanks for posting this xoffender, it's great. Haven't heard this since I was in college and it brought me back. This was written for her by Elton John, wasn't it?
the timing on this release was off, no doubt. as for eltons ability to write a five minute hit? duh! the proof is in the 140 chart hit he has managed to accumulate. olivia was/is a class act! today she spends much of her energy fighting breast cancer! god bless her!!
scotpens- Lol, I know! I'm only 12, and when I first heard this song about a couple years ago, I thought the same thing. I actually had to LOOK up the lyrics. I was so confused!
Never heard the song, but saw this on the Hot 100 back in 1987 and it peaked so low. Now I understand why, it wasn't up to par with what was hot then. Not a bad song.
I loved this album. There are many songs that I really like. I didn't like the video though... especially her jacket... I didn't like it when it then, and I still don't like it now. Sorry..Olivia. but I love you!
Creci escuchando esta musica, me causa nostalgia volver a escucharla.
When i was young listened to much this song, now before the mediocre musical supply, already it fascinates to me.

This is a song that deserved better, but unfortunately, stations were more interested in the teen queens that dominated the chart.
