Limited Run Games has Lost Their Way

  • Limited Run Games specializes in publishing physical titles with all of the DLC included to ensure that you can play your game well after the system is no longer supported. They have branded their reputation on this so far as to put "Forever Physical" down as their slogan.
Long time game collectors and preservationists have looked to Limited Run to keep the digital age from permanently warping the gaming landscape forever. When you buy digital you don't own your games. When you buy physical, especially from Limited Run you own it forever.
But Limited Run is starting to crack and has offered a handful of games that are either missing DLC because it came out after the game was produced or games require a constant internet connection to unlock content that's already on the disc.
This comes at a time when Ubisoft is set to remove games that you've paid for already like Assassin's Creed Liberation which is being removed from the Steam store and won't be playable even if you already bought the game.
With the announcement that Doom Eternal will not be complete on the cart, it's now apparent that Limited Run is just like every other modern publishing company.
The worst part is that Limited Run Games does not communicate these issues at Point of Sale and they try their hardest not to let anyone know after the product is delivered.
In this video I showcase three times that Limited Run Games has failed to live up to their Forever Physical Ethos and never bothered to let me know directly.

My issue with LRG is simply them creating a false demand by making limited runs. If we want game preservation we can't have anything 'limited'. Corporations bemoan piracy yet do so little to offer affordable of viable alternatives.

All of their releases the past 2 years or so and onwards are unlimited preorders. You have ~3 months to decide if you want to buy the game or not. Most of the games they sell don’t have the demand to hit store shelves so the only way to get them is through a limited run, which is the entire point.

    • @kicapanmanis1060
      @kicapanmanis1060 Рік тому

So go buy the digital version then if you are worried about this "false demand". Everybody that wants one gets one.
I mean you seem to think you can do a better job than LRG. Why not put your money where your mouth is? Make a company that can release niche games with wide physical releases and see how that works out.
Also physical game being widely available in the past didn't stop piracy so not sure why that would change now.
LRG is by no means perfect but they are at least trying to fulfill a niche demand and even then they get shot on it. Things will be much worse without them.

    • @lyianx

They are limited run because it would be financially a bad move to produce more copies than they can sell. This is why major publishers dont want to sell physical media anymore and are embracing digital distro. As another has said, they haven't had limited pre-orders in a long time and ive always had plenty of time to order what ive wanted.

It's a fairly typical story: a upstart company decides to challenge the big corporations by offering a more ethical customer-focused approach, achieves great success, then gets greedy and starts to use some of the very same tactics that drove people away from their larger competitors and into their arms in the first place - figuring that the customers will stick around since they're still better than the alternative and out of brand loyalty. Resist the temptation to keep buying from them in the hopes that things will get better because they have no reason to make things better if you keep buying from them.

There's a new sneaky thing that I've noticed Limited Run doing, likely to drum up sales on their bigger releases. In the past, anything Limited Run has distributed has always been released on Tuesday, whereas Fridays were reserved for games that were part of the LRG numbered set. In the case of both the recent TMNT and Tetris releases, both were distribution titles, but both were released on Friday. Also, on both games, Limited Run completely omitted the disclaimer that goes on every distribution release: "This is not a numbered release, and thus is not a part of the Limited Run Games Collection. We are distributing this title on behalf of ________. Missing out on this release will not compromise a complete Limited Run set." Plus, the image for the PS4 copy of Tetris has the LRG numbering on the spine, even though it won't actually have a number when people get it. This all may seem like a minor thing, but there are people who only collect the numbered set, and they're inevitably going to get tricked into thinking these two games are a part of it.

I’m still so aggravated, It’s one of those Beat’em ups that really means something to me. I always felt kind of special that I recognized how good that game was before it was delisted and people started using it as a rallying cry for physical media. It makes me angry that they botched it. They were so scared someone else would publish it that they did a sh*tty job and have a monopoly on that game . I so did not want to buy anything from them, But I appreciated it at the time because I thought they were going to publish a complete game. Plus I bought the vinyl because I wanted to support Anamanaguchi who made a fantastic soundtrack. I wish I had just bought Anamanaguchi tickets with my money instead. I thought a game like Celeste was what they always did where they wait for all the DLC, and we knew the DLC was completed so there shouldn’t have been a problem. But hey at least limited run Doug has me blocked for making harmless jokes about how slow they are to get a product even though I’ve been waiting 500+ days for Scott Prilgrim . I’ve been gaming since I was 6, over 40 years ago now. So I’m very old school with everything. I still buy dvd, CDs for my music, etc. Never owned a song digitally. Currently I own 98 PS5 physical games with 5 on the way, 4 from Play Asia who is a Godsend. But I know they don’t always come with patches included, obviously new day one games never do. I never liked digital only releases and games having dlc with no plans of a complete edition of the game down the road, because eventually these services or support for these games will go down one day and in a hypothetical situation, these companies or devs could shut down at any moment. What would we be able to do in a situation like that where we are in this digital only gaming space, or when we still have games that have no hard releases? I have said this over and over again. Physical has never been and will never be the solution to game preservation. The most effective preservers of video games are not your discs and game cards, it's digital pirates. They nailed the key factor that actually keep games playable on modern hardware: Mass digital redundancy with neutralized DRM. Digital redundancy solves the 2 final preservation roadblocks that physical media still bump into which is deterioration (disc rot, bit rot, scratches, etc...) and artificial scarcity.
The only final boss left of game preservation is live service games, which require mass global mobilization to lobby lawmakers to shorten copyright expiration periods so that the ability to reverse-engineer them comes sooner. White-box RE will never be enough. It has to be legal to look at the assembly of game executables and directly analyze them.
Also fuck Nintendo. Bottom of the barrel out of all the companies that are hostile to game preservation.

Limited Run has really baffled me, they got a Shantae figure coming out and they're advertising the heck out of it and there's so many big problems
1- It's using a 3D render so, you're not even really sure what you're getting. I say this is huge problem because the render shows through the pants, so I contacted them asking them if the pants were actually solid or cloth. It took 5 emails to get "It's made of resin like the rest of the figure" and I'm like ....are you SURE because the render is not leading me to believe that.
2- All of their adverts for it are showing the figure with a bunch of Standees - that do not come with the figure, you can't even buy them if you wanted. Yes, they say on the side that it doesn't include them...But the only way they're advertising this all over the internet is with standees that you- seriously, cannot buy. They are limited to the PS5 discontinued collectors version and you can't get them in any other way. The other ones they show off to the side- ALSO are not the default option.
Every other figure seller 90% of the time will photograph the ACTUAL product and not use the render. I really want the figure, but dropping $135 on something that I have zero idea on if it'll actually look like the render or look good in anyway shape or form? Yikes.

My copy is Celeste that got delayed so they can include the final DLC has almost half a gig of patch data... Funny enough the only Nintendo switch game I own that doesn't have a patch update or anything is Bayonetta 2.

I ordered the collectors edition of the new shredders revenge and it’s still just sitting as pending shipment. I understand they probably receive components that make up the entire package and put it all together, but planning should be better in ordering everything ahead of release and so it’ll probably be the last thing I order from them.

They are now screwing up the limited releases too. Senran Kagura 2 was still offline after the countdown for at least 30 minutes. People who were waiting patiently for the countdown to end were going ape shite on Twitter to radio silence on LRGs part.

I think the problem is that LRG has gotten to big that they just don't care anymore. I was a huge fan of LRG until the streets of rage 4, they weren't dumb they knew it was getting a worldwide release but they just worded their announcement and made sure they never responded to any info directly about it as to avoid any fault. Agreed their website is pretty bad now and they "offer" the option to buy extra shipping services when in the beginning they never did. I personally have really cut back on buying LRG, if anything more services with better care have come up & now I don't mind not giving them my money. Their customer service is pretty bad.

Still mad that somehow Scott Pilgrim doesn't have all the DLC available if you don't link a Ubisoft account to your game. It should have been all in there from the get go on the physical release.

Agreed, I stopped purchasing from limited run after they decided to close ys origins preorders an entire month (it was only open for about 4 weeks) early with barely any forewarning unless you follow them on twitter. Which really screwed me over since I was in the process of moving and didn't see the news until it was already closed. Great video, really glad someones speaking out about the company's flaws.

This was well said. I want to support them but I stopped buying from them for the same reasons + wait times on shipping. It sucks they are out of touch because they could be such a great company w/ little to no competition. Focusing more on add-ons and merch reminds me of Gamestop sadly.

I've bought two myself. A Ps Vita Undertale collection and Dusk on the Switch. I would've loved to have bought more but, the price has always caught me at a bad time. I forget how long its been but, I don't know if I'm ever going to get dusk or not. I remember it being announced around Halloween but, it feels like its been forever since I placed that order. I have no idea why it's been this long but, I just keep hoping I'll get it eventually.

Great video with some real strong points. It's clear that you like LRG but aren't happy with how they have been moving these days. I also buy games from them because I like to own physical games that I can play whenever. I agree with pretty much everything you had to say, we buy physical games from places like LRG because they are suppose to be complete and DRM free. One thing I wish you talked about that bugs me is how some games go up for preorder and are gone in a minute or two, I missed out on Senran Kagura for the 3DS from LRG because of how fast it sold out.

All valid points and I really do find it sad the road they have gone down. They still call themselves a small business despite their growth in catalogue, employees, but also financially. I think they've gotten caught up in their success and haven't scaled effectively in their production and fulfillment. I have received far too many CEs that besides the objectional quality have arrived with manufacturing or assembly damage...not shipping damage, that's another bucket.
One last thing, I'm jealous of that Panasonic Q and Mac G4 Cube you have.

Why not just wait a little longer for everything to be wrapped up?
Unless it's an mmorpg, eventually a game as small as Shredders revenge has an end of life plan.

They often take OVER a year to ship a collectors edition ! Plus they hold your shipment until ALL games are ready to ship in your order ! I’ve waited over a year and 2 months for my Castlevania ultimate collection and it’s also holding up games they’ve had in their warehouse for a year. Basically your waiting for a year plus on this collectors editions ! Absolutely not worth it !

what should also be mentioned is the pricing policy.
At the time they said that their games would not cost more than the download version.
    That has changed drastically.
They also don't charge 10 dollars/euro more but often almost full price for a download title which costs 10 or 20 in the store.
The shipping costs have also increased significantly.
If it's so expensive to produce, why wasn't it to begin with? What has changed?
There was also no explanation for it. Have probably noticed that they simply raise the prices because the demand is so great and they can make more profit.

I think in regard to having all the stuff on the cartridge or disk, LRG are doing the best the can, but they keep getting stuffed over by the publishers. Like ubisoft making their ubistore mandatory for everything, or Dotemu releasing DLC 15 months later.
The only option they realistically have so we get EVERYTHING is waiting like 2 years After the games initial launch, before making it. So they have all the updates and patches and DLC. But even then licensing might fall though or change in those 2 years and the projects might get cancelled.

    • @anthonyrousseau8050

Doom eternal will only include version 1.09 on the cart. It will not be complete as the game goes up to version 1.12. This one is due to size limits.
But there are other games that aren’t complete such as Quake, Wizards of Legends, Bug Fables and some others I know of. They are doing this more often than you think
