Limited Run Games has absorbed me for the past months as I researched the issues, complaints, scandals, and more associated with them. Every time I thought I was done, another issue would pop up and I'd have to amend the video to stay as complete as possible. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised by anything they do.
In today's video we take a look at the limited press company, and how it's built a business on the backs of the obsessed while explicitly allowing it's partners to become legitimized scalpers.
Please read my PINNED COMMENT for additional information after this video was released.

The real preservationists are those working on emulation (especially accurate emulation) and are dumping games. It might be piracy now, but when all physical units inevitably break down, it'll be the only way to play. And because it's just software, we can keep it around no matter where technology goes in the next 100 years or so.

    • @joshuapittman4663
      @joshuapittman4663 Рік тому +13

I don’t particularly like emulation, but overall it’s necessary. Not everyone is gonna buy a cartridge from 1988 and thus will play the game for free via emulation. Not to mention that although it’s possible to keep cartridge games going through resoldering damaged ports or possible to repair disc games though resurfacing, but disc rot is a thing via the glue that holds discs together going bad and rotting away the discs plus you can only repair a cartridge so much until it inevitably starts working. Collecting physical copies is a short term solution to keeping games around that are no longer on the market while emulation is free and protects those games until the software possibly gets lost.
Just do whatever you want and experience games in whatever way you like, personally I’ll collect anything I can afford and then experience the other games through emulation.

the whole "independently operated store inside another store" is actually a real and not hypothetical thing. in the UK, when a bunch of GAME (a gaming store) shops got closed, the guy that owned them literally just put them in Sports Direct (sporting goods stores) shops and called it a day. literally just a gaming store surrounded by soccer balls and running shoes that NOBODY would care to access over a regular gaming store

Can confirm LRG has bad customer service. NEVER place an order with multiple items, they won't ship until you ask where your stuff is. I've experienced this twice. On the order page, everything said "Ready" and in warehouse, both times I waited a month or so then finally contacted them and they shipped a day later. So apparently they have no system to notify them when all items are ready and they need to ship. Fairly mind-boggling. Or maybe they do it on purpose to encourage you to place an order per item? They do have the annoying policy where they won't ship until everything in the order is ready. So basically only order one item at a time. Another annoying thing is they just throw in the collector cards in the box, no card protectors or anything. They're just rubbing against the inside of the cardboard shipping box. I can confirm that I have gotten all my games, so they're not trash or scammers, they just have some annoying policies and practices.

I have all of the skateboards, all of the collector's editions across consoles, all of the standard editions across consoles, the slip covers, and at the time of this comment, I am awaiting the statue for my acrylics to be slotted into. Also at the time of commenting, less than 24 hours remain until Limited Run puts Shantae and the Pirate's Curse collector's edition for 3DS up for sale. It's some bullshit because there already is a physical 3DS copy (which I have). So 2+ years later, nothing's changed, though they did just barely roll out 'ship when ready' for mix and match orders. What's even MORE bullshit is that I'm feeling the strain to keep my collection complete and participate in the sale. I definitely have that lizard brain and I HATE it. Thankfully I only invest in Shantae, but holy fuck, do they have me. I am the problem and I've wasted a lot of money lol. We'll see how this comment ages

Dear God how i wished you'd messaged me before you put this video out XD
Aaero: Put up the price by an extra $5 literally the moment it went up for sale, neglected to mention it to anyone. Turns out they'd put the price up because they decided last minute that they were going to put the DLC on the disc after a number of people complained.
Lawbreakers: An online only title, where the small print mentioned that it had offline functionality but neglected to mention that only the tutorial was available to play offline. By the time people received the physical copies of the game, the servers were closed, so had essentially sold people a shiny coaster.
Curse of Money Island Collection: The boxes have been misprinted, and it also turns out that a number of discs and USB sticks with the game on it, cannot be loaded, or are simply missing files entirely.
Asterbreed: Some discs were misprinted, and didn't have any data on them. You wouldn't know this unless you opened your game and tested, so plenty of people either bough them from LRG with no data on the disc, or bought them sealed from scalpers only to find there was no data on the disc.
Metronomicon: Personally suffered from this one myself. Bought the physical game and OST bundle, and received an empty box with the title of the game slapped on the label. Literally, an empty box. Multiple people complained about the same issue, only to find out LRG had started taking them out of peoples hold orders (when hold orders were still a thing) so they could get the single orders out to people faster, and had to resort to buying copies from scalpers on eBay to give to the people they'd sold them to in the first place.
One Step From Eden: The game was available to buy as a physical Japanese copy, that had every language on it including English...... Right up until LRG got ahold of it to publish it for the US, then mysteriously, and had NOTHING TO DO WITH THEM lolololol, the Jap version announces that it no longer has English on it, just every other language.
Crossing Souls and Swords of Ditto: Printed the wrong covers on the manuals, but made sure to slap that extra $5 on the price tag for the privilage of having a manual in the box.
Between misprints, missing data, missing packages, scalpers, personally being called a prick by Douglas Bogart (which i maintain is a badge of honour these days), there's plenty more where this came from XD
LRG used to have forums, and oh boy if you could see some of the screenshots from that bad boy, i think you'd be little more than shocked XD
Shall we also go into the topic of LRG's doxxing of another CEO of a different competitor company?...... Nah, that'd go too far right?.....right? ;)

But despite that, LRG has issues with several things like their shipping partners DHL being terrible, which I know isn't their fault but they did sign a contract with them. Plus I have seen a ton of packages/games being ruined due to their lack of packaging skills.
It's also ridiculous how insane the digital-physical price differential can be. Like Doom 64 costing 5 USD in the eShop but having a 25 USD price, plus shipping, plus taxes. adding to this, limited run recently made a steam developer account and it really shows that premium pricing does not equal premium production cost. unlike most collections, LRG keeps references to both of its steam games' emulation practices wholly unencrypted, even with references to emulation for games from consoles they haven't even put on steam yet and the roms themselves readily available for people to copy-paste or replace with other roms as they see fit. oh, and did i mention that these roms remove all references to former publishers or even what year the games came out? for reference, these edits are so shoddy that i could recreate the new roms entirely in about five minutes with tile layer pro.
if that's not bad enough, these games have a newly added map feature, which is literally just images from vgmaps with the credit information cropped out. whilst they would not be the first to get caught doing, these particular maps have additional details, by which i mean an image-based strategy guide to the entire fucking game.

I bought from LRG exactly once. It was for the PC big box for Romero's Sigil. We were told it was limited and once it was done it was done. It got delayed again and again and again with no news. Date after date blew by for *only* 3-4 months with radio silence. What little we did get was dripfed via Romero who had to hassle them to get anything out of them. Still, it finally arrived.
A few months later the big box showed up on Romero's store, only this time you could get it signed, basically destroying the value of what was marketed as a collector's item.

I although thought it was strange how everyone seemed to love it, since I always hated these guys because of the way they produce games. The whole “Limited Run” thing was always a sales tactic, was clearly done to trick people into buying stuff for ridiculous prices. I like the idea of physical releases of games that wouldn’t otherwise get it, but usually LRG isn’t producing a physical run of an important game no one can afford, they’re picking up the rights to games that sometimes would’ve got physical releases, and then selling a few copies to people who preorder, leaving everyone who missed that preorder time, giving them no option other than to buy them on eBay for a ridiculous price.
It seemed like in the early days of my exposure to them, they generally were trying to get games that would never get physical releases on disc to be preserved, or at least their business wasn’t anywhere near as scummy, but it feels so sneaky and toxic nowadays and I can’t stand it. If they really wanted to preserve digital only games, they wouldn’t do a $30 release of a 1 cent game, they would make a massive compilation of a ton of them and release that on cartridge. It’s all done for profit and to rip people off.

I once ordered two games from LRG back in 2016 and it was one of the worst experiences of my life. The games arrived with broken cases and destroyed covers.
I had to fight for six months to get replacement covers shipped to me.
LRG doesn't care about game preservation as you said, they only want money.
Why else would they make a physical run for Lawbreakers? An online multiplayer game that requires an internet connection, but no longer works since the servers have been turned off.
Look at Blaster Master Zero, they released all three games as separate SKUs. While Asia got all three games on a single disc with brand new voice acting that was missing from the LRG releases.
With Shantae, why do they have to be five separate releases? You could easily fit all 5 games on a single PS5 disc.
Instead you have to check the site on a regular basis. Buy each game individually and pay separate shipping for each game (which really adds up if you live outside the USA).

"Could easily fit all 5 games on a single PS5 disc." Not the issue.
The Shantae games also range in price from $10-$40 apiece on digital stores.
      Shantae: $10
      Risky's Revenge: $20
      Pirate's Curse: $20
      Half Genie Hero/Ultimate: $30-$40
Seven Sirens: $30 or maybe it was $35
Prices may have changed since launch but those are the prices I remember seeing when I bought them digital on various platforms. There's no way they'd give you over $100 worth of games for a budget price, especially not for the latter 2 releases together.
They also see that Shantae is a hot brand people will pay for. The games, the merch, the characters, all very desirable to big fans. It would be foolish to not supply the diehard fans with stuff to buy.

LRG just opened a physical location in NC. It's only opened on weekends and typically has a line when they open in the morning. I went the first 3 weekends to pick up some odds and ends.
Each time there were several customers buying literal stacks of collectors editions that they would pile along the wall by the registers adding to their stacks while looking up resale prices on their phones. There were more than a few customers walking around with binders of info that they were cross referencing with their stack of product. I don't make a habit of eaves dropping, but at least a couple of people were on their phones securing resales as they were shopping. One guy dropped about 4k in one sale and I believe (wasn't my business so I was only half paying attention) he bought as many collectors editions of a single game as he could carry. Another was bragging that he makes at least 20 bucks reselling each game he buys.
I can confidently say there are alot of proffesional resellers who benefit from LRG. I can't say whether LRG cares or not, but it was sort of blatant I can't imagine they didn't know what was going on.
This is just my personal observation for anyone curious. I'm not making any definitive accusations. There are some people buying stacks of games who legitimatly want to own several copies of a game. High five to them. However, the ones with binders running around making deals like they were on wall street were a little...sus. lol.

I'll still grab Shantae games, shooting games (more M2 Shot Triggers please!).. basically stuff I'd buy regardless of who published it. There was also that time that they double-shipped an entire order, then threatened to charge me for them if I didn't return them at MY expense. Everyone was saying how great they were then. I am glad the public has finally figured out they are a money grab. And a pretty scummy one at that. It took the public a long time to seem to catch on though. I suspect LRG will have to make some changes somewhere down the road. Or they will start to see a major hit to their sales. You can only screw the pooch so long before the public doesn’t want to give you their hard earned money anymore. And a full blown recession is all but inevitable pretty quickly here. He publicly attacked my product to the media and on his forums. Even going as far as posting a negative review on my product on Amazon, something you're not supposed to do as a seller. Amazon eventually removed it and I believe gave him a warning.
Their product was advertised as premium and they charged almost double what I charge (when you factor in they charge their customers shipping costs).

I just remembered that LRG had a end of year sale where you could buy up a copy of a game that was released in the past for a set price.
    The catch?
You had no indication of what you were going to get. You could only choose the console, and the game itself was completely up to them. And they even had the gall to have some games be less likely to be given out than others, down to the percentage point.
This was kind of the biggest indication that this business was extremely sketchy. It would have been easier to just relist the surplus games, but they felt that it was best to do it in a way that might very likely end up with you getting something you already have, or just don't want. It's a very bad idea, and it's kind of emblematic of everything wrong with the company.
Thanks for the very well done video, I'll be sure to stop supporting them.

My comic book store does this. It's so shady. They have these paper bags for $5 and they let you choose what publisher or genre but you have no idea what you're going to get!
They're called grab bags. It's a good way to clean out inventory and give the customer a deal. I doubt lrg was this fair but your description defines a grab bag that you at least know what you are more likely to receive. Plenty of other reasons to dislike them.

  • @poptheweasel100
    @poptheweasel100 2 роки тому +79

I only wanted to buy Scott Pilgrim physically because the game was already delisted once. It'll most likely be delisted again and I don't wanna go through emulation or piracy like I already was to play it if I either lose my account or the Eshop closes or something like that. I ordered the Special Edition because it was my birthday and I felt like treating myself with a semi-neat collector's piece.
Ordered it on my birthday, took about 6 months to arrive. Which is fair. Though the account I ordered it from said I had no pending orders and I never got a tracking number, it eventually arrived right around the time I was looking into the issues. And what I got was... disappointing.
The box it came in was not molded to fit the Switch case, instead it had 2 plastic bars holding it together that fell out as soon as I opened the box. The contents inside were okay, but they were also all stuffed below the switch case instead of in a manual holder on the side, which didn't exist and would've made sense. And the "freebie" concert ticket? shoved into the game case with nothing holding it.
And of course finally playing the game, I found out Knives Chau was only unlockable via connecting to a Ubisoft Connect account, which is online only content. If I lose my save and the servers shut down, Knives is no longer playable. Good game preservation here. Sure, Knives is a character in an otherwise complete game, but it's the little things that irritate me the most.
And after watching this video, the only real preservation way at this point, is piracy. I'd be better off playing the game on my hacked PS3 with all the DLC installed on my console for free then buying the physical cartridge cause at least then I know I can play the game in its entirety offline. I'll probably not be supporting Limited Run from now on.

I honestly don't care about the scalping situation because that situation only increases the number of copies in the market which keeps the prices stable (the last chance sale LRG shows that, if the market holds still, they will eventually get rd of copies/returns because they need warehouse space).
I just don't like the increased incentives to scalp by making more "collectible" stuff. You can tell that they rely on people buying 2 copies each (1 to scalp) even though they're big enough to stop now.

Their choice of partnering up with Wayforward for their games is deliberate. Shantae (and all of Wayforward's games really) uses the cutesy often half naked female characters as a marketing tool to get you to buy things without even thinking -- and I do mean that; try and ponder whether you'd buy half of their garbage if it didn't have a half naked anime girl on it. Of course you wouldn't. It's manipulative by nature, and designed to entrap people with addictive or manipulative personalities, particularly men. Studies into marketing material over the course of the last 25 years have shown men's brains are hardwired to stop thinking logically the moment they see something that resembles an attractive woman, and are more likely to click, watch or spend any money required to see or have access to it. For example, men are over three times more likely to click on a thumbnail if it shows an attractive female character or model in a suggestive pose or action, even though everyone reasonably understands that nothing sexual's gonna be in the video because UA-cam wouldn't allow it. And yet they click it anyway.
This is why there's models on marketing for beer and stuff. Your brain just kinda shuts off.
LRG knows all of this and uses it to their utmost ability to manipulate you. It's an incredibly effective, but ultimately scummy scam. Don't give in. Think critically. It's just a drawing, and they're just a bunch of thieves.

While I don't know what's happened that caused some larger delays for games in the last year for people (maybe a truck got stolen?), I do know that I've ordered like 5 "orders" from them (some larger collectors stuff some single games) and aside from the fact it's going to come to you several months away (because I totally need to play my new game yesterday), I've never had any problems with them. Everything gets shipped, everything comes in one piece. I just have the extra xmas present on a random Wed in April instead of package tracking telling me it's coming in 2 weeks and doesn't show up until 3 and I don't have the free time until the 4th week anyway.

Can we take a moment to talk about how they handle posters? The reason they give for not rolling them up into a tube is because they wouldn't fit inside the collector's edition box that way, but at that point, why not just sell the effing posters individually? I'm not buying a Collector's Edition for a poster that I need to unfold and iron out the fold lines as best as I can before I can frame and hang it, since that would require effort on my end, and I could screw it up and ruin the poster, but I will gladly pay for a poster that I can just unroll, frame, and hang!
I bought a couple posters from Fangamer because they know how posters should be treated! Fangamer also does a better job at selling games and shipping them out in a reasonable time, meanwhile I ordered Doom Eternal for Switch back in September, and from just how long it's taking I can tell you it will be the last purchase I make from LRG...
Side note, it's a little ridiculous that big companies even partner up with this shitty company. Microsoft, Konami, EA... Wtf are y'all doing?

I'm just a retro game collector, but I still feel bad for people who get practicly scammed by the greed of these companies like Limited Run. Not cool.
