Nah, if the bands have a say in how it's run then it's not a major. If you can be yourself and stand up for what's you, then you can still be punk and be on a major (the Offspring for example). Bad Religion was on a major too.
You can probably be independent and still have different bands. It depends on the goal and how it's run. Punk rock and rap is what I grew up on (at about 10.10 in the video). Much of their attitude is the same, and let's not forget about the Beastie Boys. Public Enemy are independent too and have that Attitude. Glad you brought that up.

As they are the same size now as virgin records were when Richard Branson got into partnership with EMI I'm going to argue that they are, also the fact they can afford to have offshoot labels like Hellcat and Anti. They are also members of RIAA which would make them major.

@@thepunkrockreview Cheers mate, I don't think them being a major is a bad thing quite the opposite actually, having someone like greg running at their size with the product knowledge he has, is actually a good thing he's become the "gateway label" for so many coming into the scene and has allowed it to always be visible.

I would throw Hellcat and FAT in the same category of "Major but not quite major." Kind of how SubPop was during their peak in the 90's. They're all still technically not "major" in the business model sense, but let's be real here, any label capable of making millions is pretty major. How about Rhymesayers Entertainment? I view them as the Epitaph of hip hop.

Hellcat are technically part of epitaph, fat was part of epitaph but mike decided to branch out on his own.

Hellcat is actually a pretty small label imo. Good distribution and ran by an icon of the genre, but still not doing things in a way I'd consider them substantial at all

@@thepunkrockreview Hellcat is a part of the epitaph office. It's a vanity label.

I don't think Epitaph are a major in the slightest. Success is not the same as being a major nor being mainstream. Radio listeners won't even know of anyone off of them to the best of my knowledge. NoFX? Pennywise? Rancid? Bad Religion? Not a chance.

I mean, those 4 bands are pretty big, but inget your point. And mostly agree. Thanks for watching 👊

Epitaph just signed a *pop country* singer from my small town in Ontario, Canada. They're calling it "Punktry" and it makes me sick. I mean, good for her and all that, but it finally made me realize that Epitaph is nothing what it used to be.

First: things/people change, no way around that.
Second: just bc they're not putting out stuff you personally like, doesn't mean they're not the same. They're still giving smaller artists a chance. I don't think im into "punktry" either, but it doesn't sound too far off from folk punk.
Third: I'm not trying to attack you either, lol, just wanted to respond to you. I assure you, I am saying this stuff in a calm, respectful way. Thanks for watching 👊

@@thepunkrockreview The artist is "Royale Lynn". The music is pop rock with a country twist, and it has some distorted guitars so I guess that's the "punk" part. Musically it sits somewhere between Nickleback and Miley Cyrus (if I had to make comparisons).
