    The Beatles also changed the colour of the apple at times. Let It Be had a red apple, John's Plastic Ono Band album had a pale greenish-grey apple, Imagine had John's head in the apple, George's All Things Must Pass had an orange apple, his Extra Texture album had an apple core, and Ringo's single Back Off Boogaloo had a blue apple label. Magical Mystery Tour album had an Apple label on the inner gatefold.

      Also Ringo's single "You're Sixteen" had Ringo in a star in the center of the record, with a tiny Apple logo off to the side.

    Some of my favorite record labels artwork are: US Decca's multicolored stripes; the MCA rainbow; Electra's butterfly; Atlantic's green and red with a white stripe separating them and the Atlantic logo; Led Zeppelin's label; Atco's yellow over white with the Atco horn logo on 45s; and of course the Apple labels - the common green and less common red.

    Way before I got into CDs, I grew up on LPs! I remember most of those labels, especially the Elecktra with the butterfly, the better RCA Victor label, all those Led Zeppelin's Swan Song labels and yes I really remember those awesome Apple labels for the Beatles! There is one label I really loved that you didn't show and that would be for the Casablanca label from the KISS albums! I have very fond memories of those. This was a great video, really brought me down memory lane! 😊

    In 1968 the Beatles released they're White Album on their newly formed record label Apple Records 🍏🍏. The first time I saw it back in 1969 I was 9 years old, it totally got me obsessed. I love the artistic granny smith apple, side one having the solid green apple and side two with the apple sliced in half. It's a beautiful label for a beautiful band and, and, and fits the
    Beatles beautiful music. 🌎☮️❤️🌀👀Apple🍏Records #1

    First and most important, a happy birthday to Mollie! And you're looking better Larry, congratulations! Now then...in the States the Dave Clark Five were on Epic, as were the Jeff Beck Group and Boston. Dylan was another Columbia act, as were Johnny Cash, the Buckinghams, Paul Revere & the Raiders, etc. Arista wasn't known for their rock acts, but they did have the Grateful Dead, Al Stewart and Patti Smith. MCA had Elton John, how could you forget him? Also Tom Petty. The black MCA label with the rainbow was a great look.

    • @georgeprice4212
      @georgeprice4212 11 місяців тому

      Tom , for his first three albums via MCA, was actually on Backstreet, which for the first two years was exclusively Tom’s label…I believe Nils Lofgren was the first artist to not be Tom Petty on the label in 1981.

    Hi Larry. Original topic. Who was on Charisma ? Van der Graaf Generator, Genesis, Audience, Lindisfarne, String Driven Thing, The Nice (their last two albums), Jackson Heights, Refugee (with Patrick Moraz), Every Which Way, Bell & Arc, Brand X, Hawkwind (end of 70's). The image on the label at #9 is taken from the original edition of 'Alice in Wonderland' : the Madhatter. Larry check out Audience ( House on the Hill) and String Driven Thing (self titled debut) : terrific albums !

    Apple #1!! It’s just so classy and detailed. Swan song falls into a similar category. One label you never mentioned was the various Warner brothers. It was always a good one from the olive green of the late 60s to the beige/tan horizontal lines of the late 70s/early 80s. Great groups to. Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, Fleetwood Mac, and greatful dead to name a few. Also the Harvest label was actually created by EMI in the late 60s to try and promote prog rock. Pink Floyd is and will forever be synonymous with the label but a few other great bands were on the label in the Uk. Deep Purple and ELO come to mind.

  • @rogerschnack
    @rogerschnack 11 місяців тому +1

    I also remember albums by Grand Funk Railroad, Quicksilver Messenger Service and The Band on Capitol's green label. Some Fleetwood Mac records were released in the early 70s by Reprise Records. On the Elektra label: The Butterfield Blues Band, Bread, Tim Buckley, Crabby Appleton, Tom Waits.

    Currently going crazy trying to remember a 70s-ish label I saw. Very colorful, very elaborate. I think it's an illustration but it might be a painting. It might have rainbows and fairies and butterflies and plants on it or I might just be imagining one or more of those but it's in that general universe. Ideas?
    edit: Just did some more searching, and there's a chance it could be Kama Sutra but I think it was more along the lines of what I laid out. If that's not it then it's at least the most similar.

    The labels changed all the time so the Labelography tells you if you have an Original First Pressing or not example ED1 means English Dark Label 1st Edition or English Decca 1st depending on the Labelography you use. The Mikrokosmos is particularly good for Classical Records.

    Some not mentioned that I really liked are, Rare Earth (Rare Earth, R. Dean Taylor) , Casablanca (Kiss, Angel), Mushroom (Heart, Chilliwack), Hot Wax ( Flaming Ember, One Hundred Proof Aged In Soul), and Chrysalis had two, the green one (Jethro Tull), and a blue and white one (The Babys).

    I think of The Kinks and Patti Smith on Arista, and Pete Townshend on ATCO, Atlantic besides Led Zeppelin and Yes was a 60s soul label (Aretha, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding) and that’s why The J. Geils Band signed a really bad deal with them…because they just wanted to be on a label that was famous for all those great records. Bob Dylan and The Beach Boys were also on Capitol. Besides the Rolling Stones, there were early Who records on Decca.Besides Sparks, lots of reggae and some punk (The Slits) on Island. I love that 3-color Reprise…Kinks, Neil Young. Verve, I had Freak Out on that too. Love the Charisma label, Peter Gabriel solo too. Harvest also had Syd Barrett’s solo albums on that. Elektra also had The Stooges. Love Barking Pumpkin! It was weird when Swansong had other bands like Dave Edmunds…kind of only looks right to me with Led Zeppelin. Of course Apple is #1! 😊

    • @georgeprice4212

      Bob Dylan? I’m sure you meant Bob Seger. Also, UK Decca and US Decca were, up until UMG acquired the name, two completely different companies (UK Decca was US London and US Decca was UK Brunswick).

    Favorite record label designs?
    1) Capitol Rainbow label - super classy and a classic design.
    2) Apple Records - again a very classy look to it.
    3) Swan Song records - very memorable design.
    4) Epic records on the seventies (orange with the E on top) and eighties (black with Epic in script) designs.
    5) Warner trees label
    6) Mercury records 70s label
    7) Casablanca Records.
    8) London Records - blue and silver label.
    9) Parrot Records
    10) Bizarre Records label
    Honorable mention to
    Arista - black label with the colors in the logo
    Capricorn Records
    Columbia 6 eye label from the fifties

    I remember Scorpions and Deep Purple on HARVEST (at least the Spanish pressing of IN ROCK was on Harvest), it was a lovely label.

      Scorpions were on Harvest in the UK, Germany (after leaving their worldwide deal with RCA) and a couple of other countries in Europe. Deep Purple, in the UK, actually released their first albums on Parlophone, switching to Harvest (also then Pink Floyd’s label) in the UK and (after Tetragrammaton Records was closed down) Warner Brothers in America, founding Purple Records sometime in the 70’s.

    I've always liked the Mercury label with the (Chicago?) skyline, but for British bands like 10cc and City Boy, it seems a English skyline would have been more appropriate. I like the Elektra "caterpillar" label. Bang Records was fun. I'm not a huge fan of the Atlantic label, but I do love that logo. Island? Sorry, they had some tacky labels, including the one with the water-skiing tree. I prefer their later, more tasteful labels with the "i" that has an island scene within it. I believe the Swan Song label was designed by Hipgnosis, but maybe they had "help" with that. And the Zappa Barking Pumpkin label -- I wish I knew what that cat is saying. Could an iPhone help with the translation? I think my favorite labels are from the late 1960s psychedelic era.
