Some of my favourite 68 albums are Amboy Dukes "Journey to the Center of the Mind", The Status Quo "Picturesque Matchstickable Messages From The Status Quo", and The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown "The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown"! Great Video as usual Mr. Richie!

I was a huge fan of the Stones in the 60s. The white album is when I truly started digging the Beatles. Great picks, every album. I was really into psych also so I am glad you had so many. Everyone was trying to sound psych in '68. Great video.

Kudos for naming the United States of America, an album that remained in print long after many of its contemporaries had been deleted. It was a very good year, for Rock, not so much for me. I spent the whole year in the rotten Republik of VietNam, but a friend in London kept me supplied with new releases. I had the White Album only a week after it was released in Britain, thanks to my pal Jamie, Beggars Banquet, too. I couldn't play 'em, but friends whose jobs didn't involve walks though Indian Country had top of the line stereos. I'd break out the "good stuff", and we'd crank the volume to 11. I'm sure Charley and his pals thought we were off our rockers, but we were just getting 'em on!
There's a lot of good stuff to choose from:
Traffic - The 2nd album (this time openly acknowledging Dave Mason) from Stevie Winwood's band is a tour de force, surprisingly long (40'24"), and eminently engaging, a commentary on the post-Summer of Love world, psychedelia and the way of all things. Not a weak song on it, Traffic is still prominently located on my personal Top 100 Albums of All Time.
"I bought a sequined suit from a pearly queen,
And she could drink more wine than I'd ever seen.
She had some gypsies' blood flowing through her feet,
And when the time was right, she said that I would meet
    My destiny"
In Search of the Lost Chord - Arguably the Moodys' best LP, ISotLC set the tone for the band's work. If the first album, the immortal Days of Future Passed, was psychedelically-tinged, Lost Chord was acid-drenched. The House of Four Doors might be the weakest tracks (I & II), but if one is cognizant of the progress of a "trip", one knows of the "plateaus", where sanity seems to have re-asserted itself, only to give way to the next phase. Again, a Top 100 pick, 55 years on. The Word and Om do show their age, but the rest of the album is near-perfect, Legend of a Mind, Voices in the Sky, Best Way to Travel, Visions of Paradise and The Actor, sublime.
"Along the coast you'll hear them boast
About a light they say that shines so clear
So raise your glass, we'll drink a toast
To the little man who sells you thrills along the pier"
("Clear" was acid, also referenced by the next band's 1969 LP of the same name)
The Family that Plays Together - Spirit's second album delivered on the promise the first LP had hinted at. I played this one til the grooves gave out, still bring it out for a taste of that je ne sais pas combination of sandalwood and patchouli that made 1967 so redolent, the aroma didn't wear off until the dawn of 1970. Pay attention to Silky Sam, Dream Within a Dream, She Smiles, Aren't You Glad, and the hit, I've Got a Line on You.
"Stepping off this mortal coil will be my pleasure
Giving the gift that giving brings to me my pleasure"
Any Day Now - Joan Baez' reading of Bob Dylan's Love Is Just a Four-Letter Word is one of her finest performances on record. The rest of this double-album offering are more songs by Bob.
"Seems like only yesterday I left my mind behind,
Down in the gypsy café with a friend of a friend of mine,
Who sat with a baby heavy on her knee,
Yet spoke of life most free from slavery,
With eyes that showed no trace of misery.
A phrase in connection first with she occurred
That love is just a four-letter word."
Who Knows Where the Time Goes - Judy Collins' reading of Sandy Denny's immortal paean to time is probably the most accessible version of the song. Sandy did little more than a demo of the tune, and it is a powerful, if spare, reading. Judy gives it a polish, courtesy of Stephen Stills, Chris Ethridge, James Burton, and Jim Gordon. Stills is all over this record, done before his star soared with the release of the first CSN album a few months later.
"Across the evening sky, all the birds are leaving,
But how can they know, it's time for them to go?
Before the winter fire, I will still be dreaming,
I have no thought of time."
Book of Taliesyn - Deep Purple's second album, on Tetragrammaton Records, was a better LP than their first, featuring a remake of the Ike-&-Tina-meet-Phil-Spector mash-up, River Deep Mountain High, with typical DP restraint. None, that is. Still, as a record, it keeps the listener's interest, throughout.
"In ages past when spells were cast,
In a time of men in steel
When a man was taught no special thing
It was all done by feel
So listen, so learn, so read on
You got to turn the page
    Read the Book of Taliesyn"
Boogie with Canned Heart - Canned Heat's best LP, least-boogie-fied outing, the album captures the LA scene in late '68, when speed was becoming the menace it would later turn into nationally. "
("Clear" was acid, also referenced by the next band's 1969 LP of the same name)
Astral Weeks deserves mention, Van Morrison reinventing himself in the mold that would bring him lasting fame. And, Crown of Creation (the Airplane's follow-up to After Bathing at Baxter's, returning to rock 'n' roll), Cheap Thrills (Janis and the band that made her a star), Bookends (Paul Simon's lead-in to 1972's Paul Simon), The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society (the first "concept album"), Wow (except for the Arthur Godfrey slowdown, a very fine record), There Are but Four Small Faces (an undeniably classic record, overwhelmed by kitsch of Itchycoo Park), and, last but far from least, Shine on Brightly, my choice for the best of Procol Harum's 9 LPs.
"At a time like this, which exists maybe only for me
But is nonetheless real, if I can communicate
And in the telling and the bearing of my soul
Anything is gained, even though the words
Which I use are pretentious and make you cringe
With embarrassment, let me remind you of the pilgrim
Who asked for an audience with the Dalai Lama
He was told he must first spend five years in contemplation
    After the five years
He was ushered into the Dalai Lama's presence, who said
'Well, my son, what do you wish to know?'
    So the pilgrim said
'I wish to know the meaning of life, father.'
So the Dalai Lama smiled and said
'Well my son, life is like a beanstalk, isn't it?'"
    It doesn't get any better.

@@vinylrichie007 Time of the Season is a bit of an anomaly on the album - the rest of the songs don't really sound like it - sort of like putting "Sloop John B" on Pet Sounds. Most of the album is piano based but a good mix of bouncy pop and moody/weepy stuff. What you might call paul McCartney style wanker music, waltzy granny music, but super catchy. All these kind of sound sketches and then All Along The Watchtower which was probably the first Jimi Hendrix song I ever heard and loved. Kind of a similar feeling somebody else mentioned about albums having the hit song that doesn't really fit in with the rest of the LP. Agree about the distinction between best and favourite. And kind of tricky sometimes to objectively differentiate between the two. Never seen an original of the SF Sorrow, didn't know it came in that rounded cover, I've got a later reissue of it. a lot of bands tried country songs, remember when gene clark left the byrds ,his first solo album was with the gosdin bros,so yeah country was everywhere -your picks all good of course, saw kaleidoscope ,great but too multi talented for the times, yes electric mud was,in my opinion very good,,but that persona for muddy was short lived, then came johnny winter, sooooo i donr know people loved him.,why so hard on muddy 🤔sf sorrow was always raved about yet know one heard it ,until recent years, well i found it all interesting picks and its your channel so you have to respect that you had big bands beatles, stones, hendriv, who would also take time to warm up ,tune up guitars between songs, you had obscure ones pretty things,USOF AMERICA,so yeah all good ,but there are so many not mentioned, for me the white album wipes up any others,my opinion its one of the all time greatest albums since Elvis put rock n roll and teen music on the map,in fact when the white album was released ,the sher volume of music was like a blitzkrieg of sound, with elements of heavy rock, experimental, love songs, reaggae, country, its all buried in those two records, not to mention the cultural aspects of manson's embrace of the white album ,which led to disaster. sympathy of the devil,is a perfect song, the the album is epic, but not the white album,my opinion.all good tho ,thanks would love to see an expanded battle between 1967 and 68,whic year was best, put out the best, thanks again and good health and forture for you always,👍above to be clear i was saying hendrix took a while between songs.Viva Los Dodgers!!!!

A lot of Muddy's white blues-nerd fans even objected to him playing the electric guitar at all, let alone doing psychedelic rock. I recommend the Nick Mason live album that came out a couple years ago, some great versions of songs from Saucerful. Syd is meant to be on the song Remember A Day, on slide guitar. There's a bit of a difference between a slave owner and Satan, in that people actually were slave owners whereas Satan is a mythical character.

    • @vinylrichie007
      @vinylrichie007  2 роки тому

The fact that slave owners actually did exist is more reason to not pretend they didn’t. Honestly I have no problem with the Rolling Stones not preforming Brown Sugar. The fact that they announced it is pandering. They have so many songs no one would have cared that they didn’t play Brown Sugar. The fact that they did this in 2021 speaks volumes. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. I’m wondering if you have the same address. I have a few records that I would like to send your way.

United States of America is wonderful.unique record.very ahead of its time.
I have the first Kaleidoscope album.
The Doors debut is easily my favourite.
I saw a copy of that US SF Sorrow at a fair last week.
I love Remember A Day , Richard Wright was a really underrated songwriter.
Notorious Byrd Brothers is definitely the Byrds last great album.
    Dolphin Smile..sublime.
I like Electric Ladyland but prefer Axis.
White Album is wonderful, I'm afraid I like the ' wanker ' songs..including Good Night..lol!!
My favourite is probably Cry Baby Cry.
Years since I listened to Beggars' Banquet.
The PC police just seem to infiltrate everything eventually.

Good list, Beggars Banquet is my favorite stones album, gets the nod over Let it Bleed from the following year, mostly because I can't stand that song Country Honk, I know it was supposedly the original version but I think they should have put the single on there instead, then it would it be a tough call for me between that and Beggars Banquet. Enjoy these videos.

There's about five nominations for what year the Sixties ended. The last one is 1973, calling the Sixties a 'long decade' that lasted till the recession. That's dodgy because if the recession hadn't happened, would we still be in the 'Sixties' in the late-Seventies? Some say the Sixties ended right on cue in 1970 when the Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel split. Many say it crashed in 1969 with the Manson murders and Altamont and Nixon's inaugural and the Beatles' last public gig, and never mind the man in the Moon. And some say 1968 with the Paris riots and the London protests and America's assassinations that killed the chance of a Kennedy legacy and ended MLK's uniting influence. Hunter Thompson said the Sixties ended at the end of the Summer of Love 1967, and he pinpointed the end at exactly the moment that "The Beatles threw in their lot with the Maharishi." But 1968 is a fuzzy middleground - - because a lot of '68 product in records and films were made in '67 and released in '68. You could say that about any year, but somehow 1968 feels like 2 years in one - - and neither one was 1968. Most years in the Sixties had their own definitive identity, but not '68. How's that again? 1968 was '67 doubling up with '69? Yes, sort of.

1967 is considered the year of Psychedelic music. Though 1968 has more great Psychedelic albums. There are lots left off this list. People tend to wrap things up by decade but it really doesn’t work that way. Heck I was a hippie in 1973. At least people called me that.

The CRT and politically correct crowd are going to wipe out all rebellious music if they have their way. Sheesh. We won’t even be able to listen to Hey Joe anymore.
Great choices again. Some of my favorites in there. Totally agree with your #1. I have a particular fondness for No Expectations, Jigsaw Puzzle, Street Fighting Man and Parachute Woman. Hendrix, of course. That year I was (and still am) into the Jeff Beck Group’s album, Truth. A little uneven but a very hard rock for the most part. Believe it or not, I just happily discovered the United States of America album in the last 5 years.

Jeff Beck was considered along with about six other albums. Before sitting down and listening to the records I would have sworn Crown Of Creation would be in the top ten. Beggar’s Banquet is a great album. It is disappointing it didn’t get the same treatment that the Beatles 50th anniversary albums have been getting.

The Beatles "Goodnight" is sort of a creepy song - with Ringo whispering and the schmaltzy strings... Never thought of putting the single version of Revolution at the end - that might have worked. Or even just a more stripped down acoustic guitar version of goodnight... My favorite Beatles album too but fun to think about what-ifs...

Great pic of Byrds album. That being said, I guess you’re not a fan of Sweetheart of the Rodeo. I really did not get into The Byrds until the 80’s when I was listening to R.E.M. and jangle music which made me go back and discover The Byrds. That being said, I was not a fan of Sweethearts until I got older and started diving into Alt-Country, which led me to The Flying Burrito Brothers and Gram Parsons, hence I’m now a big fan of that album.
Regarding Good Night on The White Album, which would have been my number 1 of ‘68, I could not disagree more. It’s a beautiful song that closes out that album well. That entire album has no turds on it in my opinion. That’s why it’s a classic and incredibly creative. Those guys never put anything bad out.
