I'm really glad that you posted this video as I've been wondering about this issue, myself. I very much appreciate the explanation re: how picture discs are made as it clearly justifies my suspicions. Like you, I also love the Lateralus record (ALL Tool material, to be honest), but I don't even try to play it, since the first spin, as I noticed at first listen that no amount of cleaning was going to help - so I stick with the Lateralus CD.
Here is my question to you: What about COLORED vinyl? I've also noticed some issues with colored discs and I have a bunch of them!
I've recently bought picture / colored discs from Mastadon, Interpol, Rage Against the Machine, Tool (10,000 Days European pressing), Interpol, Fall Out Boy and Puscifer (the most disappointing as this is my favorite release from 2018).
    Thanks Jarrett!

I agree picture discs sound worse than starndard black vinyls but they are look so cool that I still buy them If they are pressed correctly. Best example of well made picture disc is Batushka - Litourgiya. I mean EVIL 079 LP press and it sounds as good as it looks. It's all about how it is pressed and prepared, but ofc vinyl will allways sound better as a standard black disc (especially 180 and 200g version of a disc).

One of my favorite albums (Riverside's Shrine of New Generation Slaves) had a very limited original vinyl release in 2013 and no repressings, which now go for over $100. I'm really not that ready to spend that kind of money on a record, but I recently found out there will be a repressing in January. The problem with that, is the only record available is a double LP picture disc. My setup isn't that good at all, and I'm wondering if it's fine to get a picture disc if my setup is just made up of things I found at a thrift store.

It's funny you mention this, because I was JUST on your Tool video and mentioned there that the picture disc sounds terrible. Mine was bad from the start, as soon as I opened it from the shrink. Oh well, it sure does look nice!

I have an album that is only pressed on picture disc and CD. The CD of course sounds great and so does the picture disc. I don't hear the "bad quality" that a lot of vinyl collectors hear when they play their picture discs. Great videos btw!

I got my first one yesterday. Actually sounds great if you don't mind some Rice Crispies. Lots of Rice Crispies. Never heard so much surface noise on a new record or even most of my used stuff and I have cleaned it very thoroughly.

I have 2 Meat Loaf picture discs. Bat Out of Hell and the 1983 12" single of "If You Really Want To", with "Keep Driving" and "Lost Love" on the B-side. However, I also have Bat Out of Hell on a normal black vinyl record (as well as on CD and cassette).

This explains so much. I was wondering why my brand new guardians of the galaxy soundtrack sounded almost distorted/not ideal…It also was pressed my Hollywood records and they’ve been giving me issues with a couple others 🤷🏼‍♂️

They should just reissue lateralus on 180 gram. Yea the picture disc looks amazingly beautiful I just don’t play much often cause of how well built it is. So for me I have it on a stand a masterpiece to show people and maybe spin every once in a while

They NEED to reissue Aenima, Lateralus, and give us 10,000 days. It would keep vinyl fans content while waiting for new music. Or at least myself.

Just not the same as having a physical piece of music and add in the artwork. No contest, to me. We could argue about sound quality all day. At the end of the day it's all about opinions and preference.

My pic discs, AIC; The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here & Blade Runner OST. Off topic but I'm new to the scene and got a hold of the Rsd Pink Floyd Pipers mono mix and some of the Beatles mono LP's. Q: would it be best to play via a mono cartridge and which ones would you recommend.

Mono cart is best for mono LPs, I recommend Shure M78S fitted with SC35 stylus, it cancels out some of the crackle, and nothing worse than crackles in stereo on a mono program

I have a whole bunch of Iron Maiden picture discs because for a few years the only LPs available for their later albums were picture discs. Luckily they've all been re-released on 180gram black vinyl since then and I'm slowly replacing the picture discs with those.
Totally agree that the sound quality is inferior but I think they have their place in music history. They're so eye catching and I'd wager that just on their looks alone they have introduced a new person to the hobby, which is awesome :)

I have a few picture discs in my collection. I have a copy of Who Are You from the 1978 that doesn't sound too bad, a Won't Get Fooled Again 12" single, the Creeping Death 12" single that isn't too bad either, the Illegal Alien picture disc single from Genesis, and one of the RSD David Bowie singles. The quality I find is fine, I just don't listen to any of them that often though. I have a Technics SL-3300 that I play my records on.

When I was a kid, you could get a premium for pic discs when swapping them with friends. I swapped a def leppard hysteria pic disc for a crappy Meatloaf normal pressing AND a Motley Crue vinyl one... (and the Crue one was their first ever 'leathur records' release... sold it for £200. Worth way more than that now! lol)

  • @recklessrexha

in my opinion, most vinyls are appealing to people for nostalgia or for the art. if you're looking for sound quality, just listen to a digital album. regardless of the crackles and pops of a picture disc, i enjoy how mesmerizing they are when watching the pictures rotate. i feel the same about merge and splatter vinyls.
and maybe i just don't see y'all's problem with them because the only picture disc i have works as well as my normal records.
