The All-New Morgan Plus Six Is A Caterham, All Growed Up (Review)

- This week, courtesy of the good people at Bell & Colvill, I am getting inducted into the weird and wonderful world of Morgan. I started off with the Plus 4, a model with a lineage dating back decades - and unfortunately a chassis that is pretty ancient too.
The Plus Six looks pretty similar, but in every conceivable way this is a new car, and one of huge importance for the brand - so just how good is Morgan's 21st Century Motor Car?

If I ever get enough money I'm getting a Morgan. I love the look and craftsmanship. I'm glad Morgan is bucking the trend and still offering a manual transmission. Thanks.
No issue with them using an auto but could they not have made a leather sleeve for the shifter to blend it in a bit?
For a very large fee I'm sure they will do that for you
Yeah. They could have made the shifter more retro
Wooden shifter paddles is an awesome idea!
I reckon Bakelite might be the answer.
Or brushed metal.
I think that would awesome and would suit the cars character
Never have I ever . . . Enjoyed a Jay Emm video more than these Morgan videos! Thanks to Richard Hammond I've been in love with Morgan since I saw one on Top Gear for the first time.
Superb work as Always 👌
That Green paint job is art
Never thought i'd say this but I want that Morgan !
They've just announced a manual option for 2020 on their latest Instagram post
Russell yeah they have but not for the Plus Six, so not for this engine. Basically they’re just changing the steel chassis from their other classic cars to this new aluminium one.
Russell, since Morgan announced that the steel chassis is going away, I suspect that the manual will most likely end up on the Plus 4.
7 years waiting time for a Morgan...crazy!!!
This car looks like pure driving joy. Weight is the enemy, light is right. I’m so glad Morgan is doing well. Of all ICE autos, this one has a particularly promising future.
Great pity that a controlling portion of this great British Car company --of 110 years, has slipped from the grasp of the Morgan family. An Italian investment company own it now.
love it, though that BMW trans has to go in favor of a manual.
Its not BMW lots cars use this trans. it is a German company however ZF and it has to be said its a great bit of kit in my M135i but i do sometimes wish i had a manual.
Voi Vod true, I have this in my F-Pace and DB11 and it works well, but I think BMW have said to Morgan this gearbox has to be mated to their engine, for now at least, hopefully a manual soon.
I believe growed is not a word. Grow grew grown
I was driving a Plus 8 last week, with the old JLR 3.9 v8. What a machine.
But this looks so much better in many ways.
Want!!
The driver should not have any wind touching him at all. The windshield should be reshaped, re-angled, and resized to counter the wind touching the driver. One or two more gauges please. Also not a fan of the chromed luggage contraption.
Lovely! I agree with you on some of the switch gear not fitting the rest of the car, however. Something like that is exactly what I would not expect from an (upmarket) Morgan.
Good to hear they are doing well at Morgan. I think I’d still choose a Caterham being more of a minimalist. It’s great both are out there on the market.
shame about the foreign part ownership
I see they are moving the plus 4 over to this chassis as well today.
Like so many lucky people my wife and I have had two, both plus 4's. They are such great fun, real motoring at an affordable price! If yu want a project less than £16k will buy one right up to north of £80k. Somewhere in the middle lies so many great examples. So if you want one get your backside round to the local or nearest agent and you'll never lose money. Oh, did I mention the best bit? Well that is the great community of people that is the Morgan fraternity, joint the club for the area you live in and enjoy one of the last of the most iconic (real) sports cars. You do need to buy some driving gloves for cold days though!
Bloody GORGEOUS !! and what a colour, my favourite (Mid Green metalic with a hint of Blue) just like my current car. If I had the dosh, I'd keep mine in the lounge.
8:52 "Brakes are interesting..." so quintessentially English, you have to love it!
I understand why people insist on confusing Morgan with Caterham, but there's really almost nothing in common between the two apart from 'old fashioned looks'.
I've had many Caterhams, still have one in fact, 225bhp for 560kg on the 11cm wider SV chassis, I love it, but unfortunately age, and my long collection of injuries is catching up with me and as it becomes very unpleasant to hop n and spring forth(§) from the doorless Caterham, so the advantages of themore conventional Morgan become more interesting.
I've always liked the look of the Morgan, which manages to conjure up a vision of touring in an ideal, golden-age Europe, when everything was still beautiful and there was no surveillance to remind us all of Auntie State.
I've seen Morgans behave very well in raceing, at the Grand-Prix de Pau, but Caterhams race in their hundreds every weekend, and on track there is no comparison.
However, for the average arthritic old git like me, I spend much more time driving on the road, and I doubt I'll ever compete again.
Pretty car, anyway.
Don’t wave at camera vans, they can do you for not being in control of your vehicle.
They can do you for smiling, in the UK.
Semi-custom English hot rod costs around $100 grand. Sounds about right. Ever price a custom built American rod?
Lol that shifter!
Hideous steering wheel and that gear knob o dear.... Looks fantastic other than that. Not being a Morgan fanatic seems about £30k too expensive. Nice review, audio quality is v.good considering the wind.
Morgans are ALL pure motoring at its finest!!!
Honestly thought for a split second that you got flashed by the speed camera at 7:47 - it was sun flashing through trees
Excellent Video.
Morgans are always cool to see.
Luv and Peace.
Wooden Shifter Paddles...great name for a band 👍
Oh dear interior and steering wheel wont mention gear stick
One never need apologize for wind noise when driving a Morgan.
Obviously another awesome video! Thank you.
Great looking and performance to match. Cracking good sportscar.
Is the +6 ever coming to the US?
I wouldn't mind at all waiting a few years this handmade beauty:):)
Theres only so long I can stand looking at the view of the Plus 6 badge on the back!
There was a warning that advertising money was involved.
Would you have preferred it manual Jay? I didn’t realise they were auto
Aero 8 please One of my all time favourite looking cars.
Looking yes, drives like a suicide machine. Wood chassis, terrible brakes, understeer, only good for going in a streight line - and its not raining as it lets rain in.
@@sixsixteensevens297 The Aero 8 had the alloy chassis, so it had good suspension, handling and brakes
How can such a car, which positively remains old-school in style, not have a manual gearbox?
Nice review Jay. I must say the engine exhaust sound is very z4 like obviously. It would be interesting if a nice friendly BMW dealer would give you a new z4 with same engine to compare for a technical reference more than anything. I don't believe for a minute they would attract the same sort of customer. But equally nobody has done a review like this.
Now that's a dream car
Lovely!
Wish I had more garage space!
Make space then!
The fact alone that we still can buy cars like that, more than makes up for the auto. It’s a great gearbox anyway
Imagine passing people on a lap day in this, lol.
Brilliant review. I wish COVID does not clip the wings of your channel
Thanks. Luckily I have a very intense filming schedule so I have enough content filmed for 5-6 weeks of lockdown
A great advert for Morgan. Any more to come?
Yep, one left this week
Just topping up the likes to 100 James my guy. Excellent channel 👍👍👍
So its Morgan week this week then? Do they have enough models for that?
It would be more accurate to say that a Caterham is a Morgan for the DIY brigade.
Fab Morgan ! With one manual gearbox I could be buyer.
Hope they can create a nice push button transmission transmission selector. A prettier steering wheel and a manual transmission.
You couldn't include even a promo photo of the chassis or suspension to hint at why the plus 6 is so different in handling?
An automatic-only Morgan. WOT
they've just announced a manual option on their latest Instagram post
Russell good, but tbh these are the mind of cars that should be manual only. Want an easy to live with eco box? Buy a golf.
that gearstick thing looks so out of place!
No manual transmission option? I'm outa here, show me no more.
Interesting that at 1:44 there is a Mazda MX 5, the most successful, some say best, roadster ever made, in the background. You can get one of those with a manual transmission as well, and, for less than a third of the price of a Morgan.
Hand-made. Not hand-made. It's like comparing the cost of a painting with a print.
John Davis
So it shouldn’t be a lot of trouble to “paint” a manual transmission.
Morgans are beautiful cars, but for me, a sports car without a stick-shift manual transmission isn’t worth it.
Yes, 90K GBP, is a lot of money. But there's nothing like a Morgan on the market today!
BMW V8’s are the most unreliable of most V8’s!! I am/was an BMW V8 owner! Back in my younger days as an Marine Corps Naval Aviator in the 60’s I was the proud owner of an MGTD! THAT was pure exhilarating motoring. ABSOLUTELY NO Morgan should have an automatic transmission!! That is an MORTAL SIN!!!
K, gonna buy one with an auto just to set people like you off....
Question please, i know a Porsche 911 can be used as a daily driver (i had one for a number of years). Can a newish Morgan +8 be used as a daily for a retired bloke just pottering about. We have other "Tesco" cars and a E-Type Jag for special occasions
I do love this +6 but bit pricey eh..
Id have to get them to fit some bumpers to it. Otherwise its perfect.
it kind of sounds like my aunts Porsche 718 Cayman witch she has now traded it in for a brand new Porsche 911 Carrera S
You need to compare with à roadster 3,7 liter not a plus four Two liter. But the new plus six seems to be more efficient
The stalks bare look very similar to the ones on the Rover 75 presumably both BMW parts bin
the F*** that BMW gear leaver ...so out of place...it ruin the interior completely.
Get it changed.
It doesn’t look that bad. It’s a nice shifter in general.
Errrr, over the top.
I also believe it ruins the interior, it’s very anachronistic. Reminds me of the Starbucks cup in that game of thrones episode lol
Morgan’s have always been underpriced, they are now approaching what they should be selling for, they are hand made for gods sake, proper hand made.
For 100k us... Seems like a "decent" deal for something so unique.
Wonder if you are going to sample the 3 wheeler.......?
Filmed very near here so I had fun playing spot the road.
So did you ?
@@MrDaiseymay Most of them.
Am i wired that i want a Morgan in my dream garage with a delorean and my daily as a Telsa Model Y
and a couple of 911s in there too
all growed up?
Almost as if most so called 'youtube journalists' have no credible evidence for their 'credentials'. Appalling to say the least.
Or we're having a bit of fun. Take your pick.
@@JayEmmOnCars now now there's no harm, at least from my comment i wasn't meaning any, its just i found it slightly amusing and it gave me a brain fart for a second when i first read it, not sure on the other guy though.
@@Dockhead Most credible journalists have at least some journalist training. It normally revolves around language and structure of a story. Nowadays that norm seems to crumbling.
One other point about the drivers comments on tyre width. He is wrongly under the impression that wider tyres give MORE grip. This is NOT TRUE, as any Engineer will tell you that friction is independent of area especially on a dry road.
Damn shame it doesn’t have that fab V8 burble,
Give me a manual option and a wooden or same color leather steering wheel (that black plastic looking thing is a big no for me) and I'm in.....it's a beautiful car!
Do Morgans still have that odd geometric nightmare, the sliding pillar suspension.
Not the new ones
Love this car, sadly coz of being an above knee amputee have lost ability to drive manual so the auto would have to do wich is a shame as all proper sports cars should be manual.
Here in the states I would use the 100k to find a nice 1954 MG then use the balance to buy lightly used 911.
Title should be "...all grown up". Please amend and update.
I think the title is aimed at the pedants out there ;~)
Classic green finishes it off well. Just pretend you aren't freezing to death..
Maybe a 500 horsepower carbon fiber Aero version in the future.
4:12 do you mean that the car smells of burning, glue and oil leaking out of the carburetor?😂
Anyway nice review and I actually like this car quite a bit.
Lovely countryside aye.
“Growed” lol Don’t you mean “grown”
The steering wheel and stupid 'gearstick' just look utterly ridiculous. Cohesion guys, get some.
I've been a Morgan owner for 50 years. I don't much care what engine or trans they put in it because they always used whatever was available. However, without the sliding pillar front suspension, it simply is not a Morgan. It might be better, but it's not a Morgan.
Didn’t get to see much of the car in this , just a lot of talk and wind noise , but what I did see , I wanted
It sure is pretty!
Over here in the Colonies we would put a 5.0 Coyote Ford or a Ls Chevy V -8 s just a suggestion my Blokes !!!!!!!!
That's basically an AC Cobra
Much more like it, Not sure I could justify £90k for a B58 though when its available in cars for about 1/4 of that price on the used market. Its certainly a special thing though!
There are other reasons to get a Morgan besides the engine.
@@VolkerHett Agreed, hence the latter part of my comment.
@@ItsDanLatham The fact is the days where people like Lotus etc... could build their own engines are long gone - it just isn't economical anymore.
JayEmm on Cars Very true. It seems like a great pairing judging from your experience anyway.
I want one of those ... !
Any chance filming an aero 8?
Lovely car. But Christ almighty that steering wheel is gopping. It looks like it's come straight out of an FSO Polonez
They know most people will replace it with a more stylish Moto-Lita one.
"Roof"? Honestly, I thought the British called that a "hood".
No, that's the flummel, which shouldn't be confused with the banger, or the hosset. And then there's the squodge, which is usually mounted behind spitch, that many people confuse with the grungle.
@@slappy8941 Ta!
Automatic is just wrong and takes away the whole interactive experience with the car that Morgan cars are exactly for.
I like it...
'Grown up Caterham'? It's twice the weight, twice the price, it's automatic and the manufacturers told you 'once it's gone it's gone' so not something you can play with on road or a track - OK it's got sidescreens (but has doors) apart from that what does it have in common?
British, hand built, an engine made in Germany, relatively light weight, driver focused, based on a very old idea, retro looks, limited storage and best enjoyed on a summer day
Sounds looks and drives like a modern sports car so not a proper Morgan ? I will stick to my TR6.
The OZ style wheels don't suit the old school body that well... Same with steering wheel and gear lever, which should have been a manual
Lovely 💓👍
Maybe bone or brass paddles !
Anyone who already drives a BMW with that shifter, is going to be upset with this as the weekend toy. Whilst it’s a great gearbox etc and I love that gear leaver in my 5 series, it looks way out of place in a Morgan. Even if I could afford this, I wouldn’t buy it simply due to that. Big mistake in my opinion, but I really like the rest of the car.
I’d go for V8,just for noise it would make!
Beautiful car!! 😍👍 but those thin cheap tacky looking headrests on an 80k+ car 👎
Paddle shifters are PSA (and woeful) .
that shifter sucks the big one. Must be ajoke, no?
I want that car so bad!😂
Morgan makes a wide body for wide bodies?
