I’ve always preferred Dennis as a frontman more than a drummer (not that he’s a bad drummer, he’s one of my favourites) but he had the best stage presence out of any of the guys in the band. Just magnetic
He has the strongest stage presence after Mike Love for sure! But I think if Dennis had the self discipline, he is the only one who could have been a solo rock star! He reminds me of Jim Morrison with Joe Cocker's voice.
This is made even greater when you consider that this is a song that Carl Wilson wrote for his ex-wife. The fact that Carl trusted Dennis to sing a song that came from his heart is beautiful. And it's not the only time in the Beach Boys. God Only Knows was written by Brian and sung by Carl, and Brian made a cover with his daughter Carnie, of Dennis' "You are so beautiful". This song along with these two examples are like a holy trinity of their brotherly love
Also, a few years ago Brian recorded Carl's song "Heaven." He never released it, but there's a version of the song with Brian singing it here on UA-cam. I believe Brian had it in his solo set for a while too.
I have nothing but love, admiration, respect and gratitude for Dennis Wilson. It saddens me greatly that he is gone. I hope to see him again one day. God bless the Wilson brothers, forever in my heart.

I really wish he had the chance to tour after Pacific Ocean Blue doing his own material, I think he could have had an amazing solo career. Tragic life in many ways... much of it self-inflicted.

Eric Rios I know he is awesome and I don’t think he looked drunk but was he really drunk during this time and I know it was before he was suspended from the band
I have to correct myself on this one. I've since listened to a podcast interview of lyricist Geoffrey Cushing Murray. He says that he wrote the lyrics to Angel Come Home based on his own personal experience, and he only presented them to Carl Wilson after they were completed, to possibly set them to music. So the lyrics were not based on the breakup of Carl's first marriage.
Dennis grew up in an abusive household. Today, he'd have access to good psychological treatment without stigma. In that era, there wasn't any. He self-medicated (just like Brian did and Carl did too, although to a much lesser extent).

This caused a major rift which extended to the side musicians as well. The band consisted of the "druggies," led by Dennis and Carl, and the "free livers," led by Mike and Al. When Brian toured with the group he had two bodyguards whose job it was to keep Brian away from drugs. Therefore, Brian and his bodyguards would fly on Mike and Al's plane to keep him away from his drugging brothers. The truth is there was no saving him-he had to save himself and he couldn’t. So much worth saving, so many reasons for living but he couldn’t see it.....very sad and very tragic. I sometimes cry for him and I feel so ridiculous! I’m not a celebrity person whatsoever but he and his story and his pain makes my heart ache.
@@NathanielChristopher - Sadly, you miss the point. We connect with celebrities because of what they give us, certainly with musicians like Dennis who let us get to know them thru their music. Which means we can relate to them thru shared feelings. Assuming we have feelings. I'd sooner be perceived as 'ridiculous' too than to be like you.
I totally agree with you, and I'm a guy. Dennis had something special about him, and not just his looks. He was someone you felt you could talk to and hang out with if you were able to meet him. He was of course sometimes his own worst enemy but he was a generous soul who wrote some achingly beautiful music, from his heart to ours. Don't feel ridiculous and don't pay any attention to soulless people who either can't or are afraid to let their emotions out. They don't get it and they never will :)
at 1:19 when the camera pulls back you can see the division in the BB camp at that time. Mike Love and Al Jardine way off to the left and Carl, Dennis and Bruce way off to the right. This was 1979 when the two BB camps did not even speak with each other on stage and they took the stage from separate sections. Also, Carl was in charge at the time and wanted Dennis to take more of the leads to instill some soul into the group. Plus Dennis was still a major sex symbol at the time. This made Mike Love extremely jealous and he took over the group in 1980 turning it into an oldies act
Why would Bruce be aligned with Dennis and Carl? Bruce has always been aligned with Mike, and he was never into drugs, so I am guessing he aligned more with Mike and Al when he came back. Bruce was also the producer of LA and Keepin the Summer Alive, so he was probably more of a neutral figure than one who sided with the warring factions in the band at that point.
In Mike's book, Mike wrote that Bruce put up a "No Wilsons Allowed" sign when he was recording his parts for Surf's Up. Bruce did idolize Brian, but Bruce has always been a Conservative Republican and I don't think he liked the Wilson's drug addictions. When Bruce came back, he didn't really contribute many songs either, as he had in the past. It was more of a humble move to produce and keep the band together after Brian was unable to produce an album in '78. At that point, I think Bruce was more of a peacemaker than anything else who could piece together the disparate elements of the group. Bruce could do the commercial stuff which Mike/Al favored but he could also put a producer's touch on artistic music like Angel Come Home which Carl/Dennis wanted. Brian also talks about this period in his book, and says the group was being pulled in different directions. So, I don't think Bruce took sides during this era.
Bruce comes from a wealthy, Republican background. He grew up in Beverly Hills. Its just an observation. I don't think his lifestyle or beliefs ever matched up with the Wilsons.
How cool must it have been to be Dennis Wilson? He was the undisputed sex symbol of the greatest band in rock `n roll history...can life get any better than that?!?
He was the coolest, the handsomest, so talented (but never given a chance to truly shine) and the only real surfer of the wildly successful Beach Boys. However, he couldn't control his horrible demons and they destroyed him. Do you know that he had lost it all, even his singing voice, by the end of his life (at age 39) and have you seen the last pictures of him? Breaks my heart to see the way his face just kind of melted; he should have been in his prime at that point. But he was broke, having been kicked out of his band because of the behaviors caused by his addictions to alcohol and drugs, and his body was shot to Hell and beyond repair. I'll never forget where I was when I heard that he'd died. Awfully sad. His second wife, Barbara, said in a documentary (I paraphrase) that she believed that Denny's soul had died well before his physical body. In 2001, Karen Lamm, his 3rd wife, up and died right after cooking breakfast. I was told that her heart exploded; she was only 49 but the lifestyle had taken its toll on her, too. To quote Rick James, another musical idol of mine: "Cocaine is a helluva drug.".
I’ve always preferred Dennis as a frontman more than a drummer (not that he’s a bad drummer, he’s one of my favourites) but he had the best stage presence out of any of the guys in the band. Just magnetic
And for some odd reason, he sounds like Jeff Tweedy.
Should have done more of it. He certainly composed enough songs to have a segment front manning each show.

I sometimes cry for him and I feel so ridiculous! I’m not a celebrity person whatsoever but he and his story and his pain makes my heart ache.
"I sometimes cry for him and I feel so ridiculous!"
I would certainly feel pretty ridiculous if I was crying over some celebrity that I never knew.
He is now an angel in Heaven, I will sing with you one day;...
just a really good song
His voice sounded a lot rougher here than only a few years before when he did POB.
at 1:19 when the camera pulls back you can see the division in the BB camp at that time.
+Kelly Marshall not at that time. Bruce idolized Brian Wilson. In the 1970s he had not yet gone over to the dark side that Mike Love ruled.
And exactly what the hell does "Bruce has always been a Conservative Republican and I don't think he like the Wilson's drug addictions" mean?
Bruce comes from a wealthy, Republican background. He grew up in Beverly Hills. Its just an observation. I don't think his lifestyle or beliefs ever matched up with the Wilsons.
Man I wish I was grew up in 60-70s!
great song. I think, it was from The L.A. Light Album.
Brian is the greatest!
yikes
Dennis looks wasted here, so sad to see him looking like this at only 34. Such a talented, soulful man with such a sad end just 3 years later.
Robertbrown7408 he was 35
Great song

Song written for Annie Wilson by Carl. Carl's wife who left him...

Peter Podetzki
Too drugged up i'm afraid.
RIP Dennis&Carl.
Peter Podetzki Rather, the effects of long term, constant drinking. The voice is almost gone.
+Ann Wagner gone? lol no
+Liz Francis Love Pacific Ocean Blue...he was just so tired I think....so thin....just done. Brilliant mind, brilliant musician. Tragic for sure.

But Carls Angel never came home..Luckily magic strikes twice and thank goodness for Gina.
😢
Surprisingly Tweedy/Wilco like (except for the chorus, of course).
good call!
This is Dennis lyrics. Simple at first glance, then deep and cuts to the soul
Definitely written by carl
The lyricist on this song is Geoffrey Cushing Murray. Carl Wilson wrote the music and arranged the song and asked Dennis to sing lead.
The Beach Boys sound way better than any other band...
It'd be cool if there were a really good quality of this
How cool must it have been to be Dennis Wilson?
Well, it was Dennis who rescued many BB-concerts.
Dennis, the shooting star of emotion of all the Wilson children. Brian was the leader, Carl the peacemaker. But Dennis? Dennis was the gut.
its better than studion version
