    Online multiplayer kinda replaced split-screen mode, which was really frustrating for me. I mean, who doesn't love to chill out with friends on the couch and have some good old split screen battles?

      I really miss local multiplayer. I didn't use it that often as I didn't have people around to play with that much, but it was still great to have. Local multiplayer with online gaming should be a thing, there's no excuse why it's not. I mentioned this in another comment thread, online multiplayer would be more fun if it could be played with local multiplayer with someone else physically there playing with you against other players online, rather than you playing online by yourself against others.

      Online console usage should NEVER have been standardized.
      I'm serious: Get rid of online console functionality, and basically all of these problems will go away.

    There is a reason to buy the wired controllers! You don't need to charge or change the batteries EVER! :-) I like the wired controllers.

      Legit Downz truth be told you might not notice a whole lot of difference in button inputs and whatnot especially if you own a new/good controller, but depending on your location to the console it might be better to have a wired controller anyways. I play fighting games on my Xbox 360 wireless controller and I feel that pulling off tricky combos is really hard to do with it, switching to a wired controller I own feels way easier

  • @goldenheartOh
    @goldenheartOh 10 років тому +18

    Some quick facts:
    The original Xbox had about 3 dozen games that supported HD.
    I always heard the 7th generation was always planned to be a long one because it cost so much more to develop such complex consoles. MS & Sony both wanted more time to recover their costs. The bad economy was just a coincidence.
    As I recall, launch 360's didn't have HDMI because that format wasn't finalized by the time the 360 was released.

      I think what you're saying, correct me if I'm wrong, is that you're asking what I was talking about regarding DLC and servers.
      Currently, they're online, so there are no issues (save for some isolated examples of games or content being pulled, which has happened). But eventually, those servers will come down. At that point, the DLC, patches, and all that will no longer be attainable.

  • @thefilmdirector1
    @thefilmdirector1 10 років тому +15

    The launch Wii had disc drive problems and broke if you used a dual layer disc to much. the "second wave" of systems starting in 2009 had this issue fixed. Just to add to the whole 360 and ps3 had launch issues thing.

    • @weirdgamer3863

      There was also the whole wrist strap issue, where people would throw the remotes at their TVs on accident. Honestly the 7th gen might have had the roughest start of any console generation (other then maybe the 5th gen, which started in '93 with the 3DO but didnt really get going until '96). The 7th gen really got good in 2007

    I've gotta agree with you about how badass the Genesis was. One of my favorite games back then was Kid Chameleon. Such a simple, yet fun game to play. Also, who didn't love Toejam and Earl?!? Being able to pair up with a buddy to fight the baddies in a cartoonish landscape was a blast. Since the PS2/X-Box thing began, it's less about game quality and more about fanboy battles.

Why not instead of shutting down the servers when the new generation is in motion, we keep the servers for the older generation online from now on and simply charge people X amount of dollars monthly or annually to play their favorite older games online.”

    One of the reasons i remain a PC gamer, no generations...for me the concept means nothing. I know it's more expensive if you want the latest titles on high settings and with high resolutions but you can play 30 year old games too with no problems for the most part. If servers go down for a game, most of the times you find servers hosted by fans of the game so you can still play.

The worst thing is tough (and you put it quite right): there's no way to future-proof a 7th gen console short of buying several units and put large HDs on them and then put all the content and patches you own on each one of them... I think we need another industry-wide debacle like the one in the 80's to bring some perspective to the industry!

    In the next generation it changed completely and I played as much as never before on the PS4 and Xbox One (Wii U and Switch a little bit)

    I believe a generation starts with whatever console comes out first and ends when developers stop making games for it. Funny enough, FIFA 14 for PS2 came out in sept of 2013! So PS2 had a life span of over 13 years! Anyway when u compare numbers year by year with consoles, I compare launch years and overall sales. Its predicted by consumer reports that PS3 will out sell the Wii (102 million consoles sold as of 2015) which is impressive with all consoles breaking the 85 million mark... Insane. Each console had its ups and downs PS3 bad start, decent middle run, best ending. Xbox 360 decent start, a little slower middle run, about the same end. Wii best start, decent middle run, terrible end as far as sales go.

      Michael Young I wouldn't say having Fifa coming out every year on your console means it still within it's lifespan, especially when you consider that for the last few years of those 13, all that was coming out was Fifa and a couple other yearly "new" sports games.

      @michaelyoung3079 9 років тому

      Kritya while I see ur point and semi agree with u, they still made PS2 games up to that point which is still impressive to me... That they the developer thought it was still a lucrative endeavor to make it for PS2 well after the PS3 had been out. Were seeing a lot of that sort of thing with the a lot of devs porting PS4 games to PS3

      This is true, regarding the online servers, but here's what you need to know about DLC on PC:
      It generally works fine because there's a greater expectation of quality on PC, and thus, less chance for PC devs to become lazy. On top of that, unlike console games, there was never a constant business model that lasted 30 years for PC gaming.

  • @strykah92

    I agree that the way a generation is defined can be a little weird sometimes, take the Panasonic M2 for example, the successor to the 3DO which was supposed to be released in 1997, on paper, it would've been a sixth generation console since it was the successor to a fifth generation console, but then at the same time, it would've only been a year after the N64, and 4 years before the original Xbox.
    Anyway, I'd say my preferred system this gen was the PS3, somewhat because it had the least cons in my personal opinion. The 360 probably had the edge at first, but I really didn't like the direction Microsoft went from 2009-onwards with the heavy emphasis on 3rd party timed-exclusivity deals, Kinect, and dashboard aesthetics, it seemed the utilization of their own internal IPs took a huge backseat because of it whereas Sony have only kept getting better and better when it came to IP utilization. And since Nintendo are still liable to make dubious hardware choices with their home consoles, I'm usually forced to turn to handhelds for my Nintendo fix. I can certainly tolerate motion controls and appreciate the advantage they bring to some games, but other times it felt really forced, DKC Returns comes to mind there.
    All in all, just the way I see the generation, to each their own.

That feature is voice commands, on the PS4 you can use voice commands and you don't have to hook up that PS camera. But, Both 360 and Xbox One you have to hook up Kinect to even use the voice commands on the 2 gaming consoles.

    I'm not 100% sure here, but aren't the Xbox One and PS4 using the same Xbox live(/gfwl, wherever they take that) and PSN servers as the PS3 and Xbox 360, so the patches and DLC will still be available, the game servers are up to the developers, if it was EA they're already gone, CoD 4's servers are still up so I don't see the recent 7th Gen CoDs losing their servers any time soon. It honestly seems like more of this "next gen" is just rehashing existing infrastructure and improving it, rather than replacing it.

    I wonder if, let’s say, Covid had happened at the end of 2017, would we have waited an extra few years for PS5/Series X? Economies have crumbled arguably worse than in 2008, and this time the silicon shortages as a result of logistical breakdowns have only added to the woes. Development would’ve been further back in 2017 and they could’ve stretched the Pro/One X for a while longer. Releases were planned for 2020 so I guess it was too late to postpone.

    I myself disliked the seventh gen. Of video games. It is the start of many bad problems, such as the dlc/bug fix issue you were talking about. I just really dislike it. Say for instance you got the new call of duty and it gives you about 8 maps to play on. Which is STUPID! I want at least 18 maps in my game. However, there IS examples of really good dlc out there. Such as undead nightmare or dragonborn. Each of which give you more stuff to do, and for a good price. Another example is the new nintendo dlc. 6 years ago i never thought id be saying this but the new wii u games have astoundingly good dlc. Like mario kart 8, super smash brothers, and super luigi u. The wii u is my favorite game console of the 8th gen. It improved upon the wii in every way.

I try to take good care of my stuff, but after having it for a few weeks it started freezing, then a year or two later it got RROD. Over the course of this generation I've gotten RROD/E74 on 4-5 360s! But when I got a Jasper 360 they seemed to work out enough of the issues, its still running strong! Also I noticed that the fallout and elder scrolls games often froze whatever 360 I was using, the game engine they used must have been one of the most demanding of this generation. oh dear, 7th gen, the start of everything wrong with gaming now. From DLC practices to annual releases military FPS games, and getting rid of split screen slowly in favor of online with 5 year olds trying to sound "mature". I actually prefer the DS and PSP over the consoles. I would say that the 360 was good prior to Kinect, the PS3 was good after the price went below $400, and the Wii as much as I love Nintendo, it's by far my least favorite console from them. And it shows as I only have about 8 games for that system. It sold the best in terms of gen 7 home consoles and Nintendo history, but that doesn't always mean the best of the best. Motion controls got old after awhile, the third party support was shoddy in terms of ports and whether if it was a party game or not, the online was poor, and aside from Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Nintendo's IPs became streamlined and too easy to cater to the more casual audience. Skyward Sword is streamlined for example, and too easy is Kirby Epic Yarn and the New SMB Wii. If I had to choose a console, I would go for PS3 due to free online, a pretty good digital store, great HD collections of stuff I didn't get a chance to play on PS2 such as Sly Cooper's Collection, great JRPGs such as Tales of Graces F, and since it's not region locked I can always import titles that interest me.

      Thats not the case. The wii was a crazy sell and it really did start a trend similar to DDR and Guitar Hero. Xbox and Playstation did that to capitalize off the motion control craze. the difference in 6th gen dlc and 7th gen dlc was that:
      in the 6th gen the dlc was more of an "expansion pack" to an already finished game to add more content/variety to it. not many games had that keep in mind.
      in the 7th gen,however, almost all games on ps3/xbox 360 had dlc but most used it for the wrong reasons (making a game complete and then removing part/s of it to re-sell to the consumer for example). not only that but also microtransactions also took off around this era too making these games look like mobile games where the free-to-play was a thing. the worst,however was loot boxes. i see NOTHING good about them since its basically online virtual gambling. Its gotten controversy over the past few years and even in europe they've wanted to BAN lootboxes in games, its that bad.

    The SEGA CD had backup cartridges (which were inserted into the Genesis cartridge slot) to supplement the dinky internal EEPROM, I do not remember it having memory cards though. It is a kind of important distinction because there were a few 32X + CD games. You obviously could not use a backup cartridge with one of those, cause the 32X cartridge had to be inserted.

    You could also argue that the Wii had mem-card slots because of the SD card, because you could do was store files on on it for backup & such, unless you had it Homebrewed, which in that case, you actually could use it as a memory card.
