I've done about 3 year of BJJ but it's 90% ground work, I've started Judo in the last few months and I'm having a great time.
from my perspective ----stand up throws throws are really cool, every bjj guys I know wishes they could blast a bist throw like in the highlight reals, I'd love to do greco, but it'd be a 90min drive to get somewhere to do it and once i got there it's be a bunch of highschool and college wrestlers who'd dunk me all day. I'd expect no gi judo would be alot more 30-40 year intermediate bjj guys like me.
2- I've got a Kali coach who talks a bit about eskrido, the fillipino adaptation of judo and he says it generally avoids take downs on the assumption there's a weapon on the other person it's better to throw and stay disengaged than go to ground.

Not a criticism of "No Gi" Judo, but I think you should just do Judo to learn Judo and its moves. Once you understand the ruleset, stance, kuzushi, grip fighting, transitions, and other stuff that makes Judo work, its much easier to apply to a No-Gi setting even without the grips. Also, the pool of people who are good at upper body throws, trips, and other Judo stuff is in actual Judo, not BJJ or No-GI Judo. If you take Judo classes and consistently throw, trip, and outgrip good Judoka, then its much easier to do in a No Gi setting.
There aren't really any shortcuts to it by doing throws or trips which I think a lot of BJJers are looking for. And in a No-Gi rules setting, there's nothing preventing your opponent from pulling guard, so you're never going to get good at takedowns because there's no enforcement of these rules. The Judo ruleset and competition is why Judoka get good at throws/trips/newaza. You need a reference point and understanding of the mechanics of why that stuff does and doesn't work and setups before you can ever apply them in an actual match against anyone who is good.

I’ve been wanting to start judo and live in the NYC area.. If you do start your No-Gi judo program at your dojo I will sign up! I’ve wanted to do Judo but I want to be confident I could do the techniques without the Gi! I don’t know why it’s taken so long for us to finally being so close to having No Gi judo…

Start Judo for Judo, not to get good at "No Gi" Judo. If you get good at Judo and understand when and when you can't do throws, trips, kazushi, etc., you will be able to use it in Gi and No Gi. The main issue with "No-GI" Judo is that you can't learn a couple of moves and expect to pull them off against anyone who is good. Its like going to your first BJJ class and expecting to be able to get good at arm bars without any context of setups, positioning, and when you can and can't do them. The pool of people who are good at Judo is in Judo, not No Gi Judo. You also need to understand the rules of Judo and why certain stuff works and doesn't under the Judo context before ever applying it to No-Gi or BJJ. Do Judo, and if you can throw or trip someone consistently who is good at Judo, it will make it much easier to do in a No Gi setting. The grips aren't that big of a deal. The hand fighting, setups, kuzushi, aggression, athleticism, and body positioning is.

@@JJDon5150 yeah I completely agree with you! Thank you for your comment. of course I respect the Gi and all that it encompasses! The no-gi judo aspect will be the cherry on top! (Self defense)

@@JJDon5150lol, while what you said could very well be true. It's hilarious this is the argument between bjj and nogi bjj since forever and no one takes that to be true anymore as schools like 10p dominate without ever touching the Gi.

    • @allanliang2925

@@aznravenflamemy thoughts exactly. There’s nothing inherently magical about the gi. This ‘understanding’ you’re talking about is about weight shifts and timing. That underlying gi OR no gi.

    • @JJDon5150
      @JJDon5150 25 днів тому

@@aznravenflame Except No-Gi and GI BJJ have way more in common with each other than Judo and No-Gi Judo do. The Gi prevents a lot of lower body takedowns. Watch Judo pre-leg ban and you'll see it doesn't look much different than Judo now. Despite what the uninformed on the internet say, Judo didn't get rid of lower body takedowns because wrestlers had an advantage. Its actually the contrary. No-Gi BJJ or No-Gi Judo though, lower body takedowns and the lowered stance have a lot more impact/influence because of the lack of the Gi and grips to help prevent them.
You could say "yea, but Greco." But Greco doesn't allow for lower body trips like Judo does. And then all of the major wrestling (freestyle, folk, greco) and sambo arts have different rulesets to Judo and don't allow specific moves or pins. I.E. Sambo no chokes, wrestling has different pin lengths, wrestling has no guard or BJJ elements, etc. So No-Gi Judo ends up getting a lot more Freestyle wrestling influence than anything else (including Judo), which negates learning the whole "Judo" aspect. Being hunched over in No Gi Judo takes away a lot of the upright aspects of Judo which is how you hit Judo specific throws in the first place. You also don't have any unified ruleset in No-Gi Judo, and everyone who is good at Judo are primarily going to be competing in, training in, and teaching in Judo. In Gi and No-Gi BJJ, the ruleset is almost exactly the same except for heelhocks. So you'll get partners in No-GI Judo who lack the technical ability of the people who know the individual sport.
Bottom line IMO is, if you want to get good at Judo, do Judo. If you want to get good at wrestling, do wrestling. If you want to get good at BJJ, do BJJ. Once you understand the basics of each art, its much easier to apply the techniques under different rulesets yourself and together.
Also, I'd never say that 10P "dominates" anything. This is coming from someone who used to train at a 10th Planet too.

This type of seminar sounds amazing. You should package those drills into an instructional and sell in your store, or even at BJJ Fanatics, I’m sure there’s a market for it (I would pay for this definitely 😊).

I know the "kid" they are talking about that said "Why Judo Sucks". He trains in North Carolina and the disclaimer on his video was requested by his instructor. He is a no-gi grappler that doesn't believe in belt ranks. He has some odd videos about concepts he has no background to talk on.

I earned my shodan in 2008 and asked about self-defense training and including judo but in sweats ( no gi) and I was laughed at and mocked. Times change. Keep in mind, Judo evolved from JuJitsu so why cant we expect something new to evolve from Judo. I love traditional Judo but i welcome something new.

Several parts about the seminar sounded like Lancashire style/catch wrestling that I've seen/read. Probably why there was such a rivarly and crosspolination between those and judo/jujutsu.
How about a judogi in the style of a rashguard? Take the slack out and tighten it up.

If we want Judo to grow, it has to actually grow. Having Judoka win in MMA would be the biggest fasted way to do it. After that having judoka be of note in HS wrestling would be the next best way. To do this we need to explore exactly what you're exploring now. Thank you for this!

Wrestling: shintaro (lol), JASON MORRIS, and many current d1 wrestlers started as judoka or have at least dabbled
