Good video! worth mentioning that if you're skipping processing before the API compressor you can cut down on circuitry by going in the master channel at the program sum input. it's a shame there isn't a switch to put the master insert before the compressor.
Hi! If you are using the 4 preamps pf The Box, can you use external preamps and passing the signal through the 16 summing channels and then to the interface? Thank you?
Hi there, I have 2 questions. In your PT you have an out that is called “Stereo”, is that the out of your interface? Your monitors are connected to the interface or to the Box? Than you!
This studio can do surround or stereo, so the output is labeled accordingly. The outputs could go to the box but in this studio since it has surround, go to an SPL monitor controller that handles four different inputs and the five speakers (plus monitors in the studio).
This is true. Our experiments reveal that routing through the API yields a different sound than realtime or offline bouncing. So, mixing is happening in the box but final signal passes through the API>
@@CapitalMusicTechnology Got it.... so when you record with The Box, and the signal goes back to Pro Tools, you get the preamp, the 500 series module (if it’s on) and the warmth of the console’s circuitry right?
Just out of curiosity, you seem very knowledgable . . . are you going directly into The Box from your computer via USB or is there an A/D D/A conversion in between. Appreciate the insight and subscribed!
ive got a MOTU M2 which is way better than this toy desk. Only $150 too. I asked Bob Clearmountain what he'd rather have and he said "The M2 all day long". Not my words but the words of a world class producer.
Capital University Music Technology I don't say so, Bob Clearmountain says so. Quincy Jones was in the room when he said this and chipped in himself saying the MOTU M2 is better than anything by Neve as well, even the million dollar desks. Nodding in agreement in the background, making the coffee, was None other than George Martin and Johan Sebastian Bach.
Capital University Music Technology Well, we were recording Led Zeppelin at the time and we asked them how they'd like to record? The choice was API desk to a Studer 2 inch tape machine and the use of all the classic outboard gear in the best recording studio in New York, Or MOTU M2 into a MacBook Pro with stock plug-ins. Jimmy, Robert, John Paul and Bonham looked at each other, turned to me and asked, "is the M2 bus powered?" 'You're damn right' I explained. And so the choice was unanimous and obvious, M2 it was. From that day forward Quincy and Clearmountain never used anything else, they sold their own studios bought M2s and laptops and recorded all their future projects from their bedrooms at home. Bach however was quite stubborn and stuck to using wax cylinders.
Very informative and in depth, thank you! I’ve always wondered how people use hardware gear and consoles with Protools

Awesome video! Thank you!
Could you explain how you would the aux sends. They seem limited without aux dedicated returns. No one has a video on this. Thanks
Thanks man!

To sum the 16 down to 2? I'm not sure why you'd do that. But sure.

1:38 if you do that, you don’t have the chance to push the mix with the faders

@@CapitalMusicTechnology Do you think a summing mixer like the one from AMS Neve (rack one) can stand with the API? Cheers!
@@preciseaudioblog Would be fun to find out! Dangerous, SSL, Neve, API...so many options.
In your opinion, is The Box worthy sonically? I mean, is it a good paid money?
We love it but I'm not sure it's right for everyone. 4 channels preamps, 500 slots, 527 stereo bus compressor, etc. Loads of fun.

@@preciseaudioblog correct. Then in mixdown, it's a summing mixer and a way to integrate other hardware.
@@CapitalMusicTechnology So cool. Thank you!

Audio goes in and out via the HD I/O. We have the connection half-normalled in the patchbay.
it's a purely analog console. nothing digital.
I am inches away from buying the 8 channel "The Box"
How do you get £19000? I'm a broke student but want this!
