Active line/cable checker with test tone, Locking IEC terminations, bulk pack of 1/8-1/4 headphone adapters (I work with djs a lot) and a cheap trueRMS meter and simple edison tester. I used (to some extent) everything in this video. The stands are new, and I might add those into the loadout at some point!
Agreed. I thought it was expensive so I pushed it back. But it just got more expansive and I still bought one. Highly recommended. That reminds me, I need to charge mine lol
This is possibly the only “things I wish I got sooner video” I’ve seen that is actually useful. Also, seconding the peli case tour video. I always dig those.
I think that these are all great, but I would add a few. Fat Ivan door wedge or a cheap rubber door stop. The fat Ivan doesn’t need a flat ground to work, it just attaches to the hinges. A switch 57 Leatherman serge A multi bit screwdriver set with security bits. A Klein breaker sniffer to find if different outlets are on the same circuit. Also has a tester to see if an outlet has a power problem. Eno Double Nest hammock. I have gotten some good sleep in trucks and under stages in that, on long days. Anker GaNPrime power bank.
Hi I was actually thinking of getting a hammock and hanging up in my van after I unloaded everything just for that reason. I have to figure out hanging points and actually have a gig that's overnight.
We have switched all our cases over to Milwaukee Packouts. Everthing is on wheels. If you plan it right, there is no need to unstack any of the units. Game changer. The best wireless router I've used is the Swissonic Professional Router MKII. Rackmount unit and built like a tank. Great reception with no dropouts.
We recently switched to an Xair system for mixing and I have to say this is the best video I've seen on optimizing a modern AV setup in a long time! Thank you for taking the time to share your expertise!
a few items that have helped me in the past. 1) Mic quick Connect coupler. I use this on my RF Venue antennas, I have a dedicated round base stand for it, 2 seconds to clip it on and move on 2) Locking IEC connectors.. These have been life savers.. Ever spend 5 minutes trying to figure out why suddenly no audio is coming out of your wedge monitors.. They have a great latching system that has helped me a bunch.. I have a few others, but they are focused on lighting. Pro-X makes these great quick couplers for lights.. I have them mounted on all my C clamps and leave the clamps on my T bars. I mount 6 lights per bar, and the clamps don't fit into the lighting cases. So this makes setup about 15 minutes faster per T-Bar. Finally the SuperCat cable with tails, saves ALOT of time as well.. Tech world might be 50ish feet from the mains and subs.. Run 1 SuperCat cable to a junction, and (4) short 20ft runs.. no more wrapping 4 or more 50ft - 100ft XLR cables..
Your content is very helpful. Thank you for the helpful information, I myself and my own sound guy for my own cover band and I realize that I need to be more prepared and better organize and this really good insight. I don’t have a set up like you do but I have a QSC system that I’m using right now and having all this other stuff is very helpful to have and saves a lot of time.
+1 for hard cases! I am a multi-instrumentalist and depending on what I'm playing on a given day need a lot of different gear. I used to carry everything in a duffle bag or gym bag, and eventually decided I needed a hard case, preferably with wheels. Pelican makes nice cases, for sure, but I've actually gotten a huge amount of use from the Ridgid Rolling Toolbox from Home Depot, along with one of the smaller cases that mate to the top of it for all my small parts. A really good alternative is the Packout options from Milwaukee. These are considerably cheaper than their sound gear-oriented counterparts from Pelican and SKB and similar, and are also heavy duty and in some cases water resistant as well. Paired with some customizable foam inserts you've got a ton of options for how to use it, and stackable configuration with mobility built in. On the Milwaukee side, I like the accessibility of the Packout dolly (although the wheel base is a little too narrow for good stability), with a 2-drawer and a 3-drawer cabinet, plus a lift-top toolbox on the top of the stack. Plenty of storage, and access to everything without having to disassemble the stack!
Great stuff. Your pelican case with all your extras is a must. All of our trucks and shows go out with an Engineers box. It has everything one could need at a gig. Pencils, markers, scissors, measuring tape, small level, twine, box cutter, cable stripper, extra wired mics, headphones, adapter box, and of course extra cables. Heck, we even startung putting toilet paper. Yes, TP.
Your videos are high quality, way higher than someone of your size generally. I'm super impressed. I'm also impressed that as a sound tech person you look and act normal. Every person I know who rents audio equipment is just slightly off... I just subscribed, thanks for the the great videos!
Recently built myself a set of twin IEC/ Speaker cables. It really saves time setting up the PA System for my mobile DJing work. It's not too hard to build cables yourself.
Specifically for this use case, I think Unifi Express is a really good cheap(ish) option that you could then add an external access point to later if needed. Edgerouter definitely works but is way less easy compared to Unifi ecosystem.
Fantastic video. I do all of the logistics for my band and can incorporate quite a few of these to make my own personal life easier for setting up and tearing down.
I have a “breaker buddy” which identifies when two 120v outlets are on separate breakers. It’s designed for use with industrial cleaning machines, but works great for finding two separate 20 amp circuits at the venue, which is enough for most of my gigs thanks to LED lighting and class D power amps.
You need to plug both at the same time right? Like you plug one end to a wall and typically run an extension to the other circuit (if they’re not together)
awesome awesome video, great recs. i'd throw in a Fat Ivan door stop for load in/out. maybe a leatherman (my surge is holding up well after 6+ years) as well but this list rocks. Honorable mention in for Qbox (or a pair) if you're working longer distances or festivals, with stagehands, another engineer on mons, etc. its pricey but so useful for a quick diagnostic.
Great video! And I've come across the antenna you use. If it's the same as I can buy here in The Netherlands (It's called a TP-Link Omada EAP225 Outdoor ), you can swap out the antenna's for even better performing ones. The reason I'm mentioning this is that I'm currently (finally) start using my X32 and connected an iPad to it. I'm wondering why I didn't do this sooner... And the Radial is a golden tip. You're right that clients can show up with gear that you didn't expect. I watched other video's and saw you using wheels under your speakers. And this video made me realise that I also need to get me some of those. Even though I'm using small 10" active speakers, looking back on the last month, I'm a bit tired of carrieing all the speakers individually or packing them on the flightcases. Thanks again for the tips in your video.
The Wifi access point he's using is Ubiquiti UniFi AP-AC-M "Mesh" model. In my opinion, Ubiquiti beats TP-Link.. :) Though everything is better than most digital mixers built-in Wifi...
Another advantage of trollies for gear - being quicker the window where you have an open van and a pile of gear in the venue, where most of the time 0one, the other or both is unattended is much shorter.
For the longest time I would stack and unstack my equipment individually from a plastic tub and then wire it all up. Two years ago I bought rack cases! Made a custom speaker connection panel on the back of my amp rack and wired everything up with the cat rack system and various components. Pull out the wheels Stack two boxes roll it into the venue and pull off lids then connect power and 2 Audio cat cables between the two boxes add power cord to the wall boom done. The nice thing about the cat system from Sound tools is it was pin compatible with my studiohub+ adapters I just had to rearrange the numbering. So I can either throw out three cat cables and get a 12 channel separable snake or I can throw out three cables which break into 6 cables and land 2 channels at each mic stand. That works out great for having an instrument mic and a vocal mic on one stand. The next thing I got quick disconnects from microphones and then the clip stays with the microphone it's intended for, and then switching Mic's from stand to stand is really easy. one of these days I will actually get around to making a video on my system, cough darn life.
I did the plastic tub thing (for power and xlr mostly) for years as well... Glad I finally got some road cases! It's definitely improved my quality of life while working.
Aweome Video. I'm a production sound mixer contemplating switching to live sound and this video to me is like someone giving me advice before I get into it. Thank you
As for wheels you can't beat harbor freight deals. $25-$30 depending on what size you want and some ratchet straps great way to start out. And they're more versatile than having wheels on things because then you can stack whatever you need to move unload and reload.
Yeah, but is sooo expensive. SC-Monolith1 is £13 per metre, but 1.5mm2 TRS is £1.90 and VanDamme XKE is £2.60. So it's nearly three times the price per metre. Buy once, cry once, I guess.
Some people say you should run audio and AC power separately, and cross cables at 90 degree angle.. Which is the opposite of a twin cable.. :) But I have also used some 10-15 meter twin cables with no audible hum. Are you and I just lucky, or is "AC hum leaking into the audio cable" a bit of a myth..?
@@larslengberg I use 50' (15m) ProCo Siamese Twin cables and I've never had interference. Part of the reason, I think, is the twist in the AC power cable, and probably some good shielding on the XLR cable.
@@larslengberg • I have always thought it is "A Bit Of A Myth." I use XLR cables that have good shielding with no AC Mains hum problems. There is a "Blow-Torch" AM radio station transmitter site nearby (KNX • 1070 AM • Los Angeles) in Torrance, CA • USA. I have a XLR In / Out in-line transformer device in case I can faintly hear KNX, this would also kill any AC hum, if ever needed.
I'm not entirely sure, but as far as I know, the mentioned Edgerouter is already End of Life. I would recommend opting for something newer from Ubiquiti. They have a new mobile router, which is also available in an industrial version, which would be better for holding up in rough conditions.
That's good info. What's the new router you're talking about? I think someone already recommended the Ubiquiti Gateway Max (never seen it) don't know if it supplies POE though or what all it's features include.
@@SilverCreekAudio If you search for UniFi Mobile Router (UMR) you should find it. It's pretty new. It is a mobile router and access point, this means you can insert a sim card or use it without one, just as a simple network with wifi built in. This way you would reduce your hardware to just one device, instead of access point + router. You can power it via POE or USB-C and you also have one additional POE Out Port, which is pretty awesome considering it's size. If you opt for the industrail version your not forced to AT&T in the US and you have a option to waterproof it. The cons in my perspective are, that you only get 2.4 Ghz wifi and 4G on cellular data. But hey thats not a sales pitch.,it's just a Unifi fanboy speaking :D
I have it and I have used it both as it's intended purpose (sending audio from devices) and as a regular DI box. I take it everywhere and it works great, I must say it did take some time to figure out how to send signal to an amp and the console simultaneously but it worked.
Pelican is great (I own a 1510 like everyone) but after buying a few Nanuk cases, they're the way to go IMO. Just as tough, just as waterproof, but the handles are nicer and most importantly, the latches are bulletproof. Often available at the same price or lower than Pelican. I have Pelican, SKB iSeries, and Nanuk cases, and while I have had no issues with any of them, Nanuk is the one I'd pick again. Just wish they made guitar cases.
FYI you can add more than 8 channels on the Barringer apps, but the Mixing Station app is definitely the next step up. For the iPad you go into set up layout and create a custom layout I like the narrow width faders. For android you're actually using the bare-bones version of the Mixing Station app or at least a prior version of it that was limited. Originally there was no android version and they licensed part of Mixing Station that was reversed engineered to be able to build an android app. To do that you go to settings layers and then change your visible channels per layer value. I actually like both apps for different reasons. I like the iOS version and the android version and mixing station but primarily now that I have a modern convertible tablet PC I'm using the full Windows version.
I have the earlier PROAv..brilliant piece of kit. Also have one by Palmer. They ve become indispensible at gigs. Also Combi core van damme cables winner.
11:00 I'm not a big fan of ubiquity but I am liking TP link right now, and unless you're using multiple AP units from the same vendor you're not really running into roaming between AP to need the controller so just any standard router works. I go through the extra trouble of reserving IP addresses in my routers so every device gets the same IP every time and if I need to reboot the router and everything else is connected to a switch everything stays functioning. I actually have a couple of those travel routers and I hot glued magnets to the bottom very convenient as I can find any metal and get it above peoples heads. sides of speakers, Metal tent, metal building, etc. Although I will have to remember that Mic clip technique for use with my outdoor TP Link AP's.
It's expensive... But the Beyerdynamic M201 microphone! I have four of them, now, and about to order a fifth. On stage they sound good on just about everything (like an SM-57 but so much better), and have great off-axis rejection. They're good on the usual suspects (snare, guitar cab) but I used them to mic an upright bass, alongside the pickup on the bass, and that sounded fantastic too!
Instantly subscribed. Great advice, I feel like I'm gonna learn a lot here. I wish I spent more money sooner on quality cables, mic stands and hard cases instead of guitar amplifiers.
Unless I've not found it yet - a content idea I'd like to see is how you utilize your gaff tape / what the colors mean to you... or for example, why you have an X on the back of the iPad in your Pelican, etc.
Oh good idea! It changes but most of the time it just correlates with the input colors on my console. Drums, instruments, and vocals, stuff like that. Thanks for watching man!
Great videa I have been watching you and really appreciate your channel. What length twin cables for the floor monitors, I'm thinking of getting the 10'
Bit off topic but your camera quality looks extremely professional. The lighting and color palette is perfect! What camera are you using if I may ask? Any pointers on how to achieve a somewhat similar look would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks! I used a Canon R6 mkII with a Sigma 18-35mm lens for all the studio shots. Everything on site was filmed with the same camera through a Canon RF 16mm lens. Thanks for watching!
so for the twin cables, do all your power and signal routing go to the same place? my guy do sound with runs power across the stage and xlrs go to "monitor world" or to the snake
I just got a 4 foot Stanley power strip with 12 outlets & a compressor for my tiny bedroom studio. I believe the term is Adulting…is it still cute to say that at 45?
I've never had a Radial that still worked after being dropped. JDI's, PRO-D2's, Pro AV1's, AV2's, etc. I've had terrible luck with them. I only use Whirlwind for DI's now.
I’ve been using mixing station for a few months now. Do you have any recommendations for learning the app? I would love some good tutorial videos or templates to start with.
Yes you can, If you have a PC you'll want to send your mix to Out 1-2 of your USB sends, to do this you have to manually route it in your console. In the X32 I use the User out section to send my stream mix through Out 1 and 2 (left to output 1 and right to output 2). In the card section of the routing pages I then select user out in each bank of 8. I hope this helps
I sometimes dream of having a Radial AV2 or SB2 in my pocket to hand it over to the "soundman" at school or kid parties... the grotty laptop headphone sound makes my ear bleed every time.
Hello, @SilverCreekAudio I saw in some of your videos a small box that apparently has speakon female and power female. I watches this video in hope to discover what is this, but you didn't listed it here. Could you explain what it's purpose?
@SilverCreekAudio Thanks! Here in my location, the powercon isn't as common as speakon. Maybe in another video you can film "live audio gear I ever used but you maybe not" for people that are starting in this world.
From where I"m standing, you've still got the best piece of equipment of all, which is a young body free of pain. If my 48-year-old ass never hauls another subwoofer across a parking lot again it will be too soon. 👴 Now all my clients are house of worship. I just bring myself, maybe some headphones and a laptop and I'm ready to go. 😁
For the price, especially now if you can get your hands on one, it just works. Wondering what kind of impact the Wing Rack unit will have on portable rigs like I have. Thanks for watching!
@@SilverCreekAudio understood. my budget is around 2k more or less, i dont have a big van and logistics is a challenge. i like the 18inch but realisticly i might only haul a 15 plust im just starting ang have no crew :) i appreciate your reply thank you very much!
@@SilverCreekAudio I just watched it. Thank you! I am a guitar player that also owns all the PA system and it is the audio engineer for the bands that I play with. I have been thinking about just renting and be the audio engineer as a side hustle.
Wait until you start doing video too ... and you discover this magic device called a Decimator. It's sole purpose in life is to make things that don't connect together connect together, and it's insanely good at it. Friend of mine calls it a "video de-f*ckerator"
What gear do ya'll wish you bought sooner?
Let me know below!
I think 80% of what you mentioned...
The one I couldn't afford.
Headphones, and a hook to hang them on. Can fix a lot of issues using solo in the cans.
Sound Bullet. Took awhile before pulling the trigger on it but being able to ID and diagnose issues so fast has been super helpful.

Wish it had a proper line up level (and stable) tone gen though…
Cab driver…. But near impossible/super expensive in the UK

That's good info. What's the new router you're talking about? I think someone already recommended the Ubiquiti Gateway Max (never seen it) don't know if it supplies POE though or what all it's features include.
@@SilverCreekAudio
If you search for UniFi Mobile Router (UMR) you should find it.
I was just seeing that as well. Following for more information.
Thanks for the great suggestions! 🙌
Great advise here - that Radial is a game changer, thanks for sharing that!
Thanks Ronnie, the Radial is a huge stress reliever for sure! Thanks for watching the video!
I have it and I have used it both as it's intended purpose (sending audio from devices) and as a regular DI box. I take it everywhere and it works great, I must say it did take some time to figure out how to send signal to an amp and the console simultaneously but it worked.
Super valuable video! Mixing station is a total game changer as well as the flex stands! Just subbed loved the content!
My man this is great content I appreciate your honesty in this overview.
Appreciate it, dude! Thanks for watching!
Bro the second I saw you wind your cables for half a second with the one in one out technique I subscribed
lol good to hear! Thanks for the sub dude!
Also Combi core van damme cables winner.
never head of Combi core from van damme. I'm definitely going to check those out.
Good cat 5 and good SDI that lay flat are worth every penny
Changed my life man!
The edge router made me subscribe.
I’d love to know any tips for settling it up correctly!
Hey mark! The magnets are a cool idea! I want to try that out. Thanks for watching dude!
Love Beyerdynamic! I use their drum mic kit and I love it. Thanks for watching the video man!
Excellent advice & great video!
Thanks, dude! Glad you liked it!
Instantly subscribed.
Great advice, I feel like I'm gonna learn a lot here.
I wish I spent more money sooner on quality cables, mic stands and hard cases instead of guitar amplifiers.
Thanks for the sub man! Quality mic stands are super important! Forgot to mention those.
mixing station is the best! I hate when I'm forced to used other programs.
It really is a game changer!
Great video. I learned a lot. Thanks!
Solid information bro! Could you do a video on how to setup the edge router and the ap antenna with a digital mixer? cheers!
Great video as usual. Thanks for the share!
Thanks for the support dude!
Great video, I love the tips. Is there any chance you can make a video on the Router and Antenna hook up?
For sure, that's a good idea. Thanks for watching man!
@@SilverCreekAudio Thank you for getting back to me!
Great videa I have been watching you and really appreciate your channel. What length twin cables for the floor monitors, I'm thinking of getting the 10'
Thanks Kirk! I typically use a mixture of 10' and 25' twin cables for floor monitors. Just depends where the snake box is. Thanks for watching dude!
Another great video and I'm copying that list! Love the shout out to my friend Dave Rat.
Thanks for the kind words man!
+1 on the Mixing Station App it's a lifesaver :)
Agreed!
pro av2 is a gem 🤯
Huge confidence booster!
Can you do a full video on your mixing station layout?
Bit off topic but your camera quality looks extremely professional. The lighting and color palette is perfect! What camera are you using if I may ask? Any pointers on how to achieve a somewhat similar look would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks! I used a Canon R6 mkII with a Sigma 18-35mm lens for all the studio shots. Everything on site was filmed with the same camera through a Canon RF 16mm lens. Thanks for watching!
@@SilverCreekAudio Cool, thank you!
so for the twin cables, do all your power and signal routing go to the same place?
my guy do sound with runs power across the stage and xlrs go to "monitor world" or to the snake
Your van looks very interesting. Would be really nice if you could give a tour of it
There is! Check out my channel. Thanks for watching man!
Nice video! I'm about to pull the trigger on that UniFi AP as well- had my wifi cut out at a show last weekend :(
Hate that feeling... You'll rest easier with your new setup!
Mixing Station is sooo op 🔥 If you think you got it all good with wireless mixing, wait till you see Mixing Station's superiority over stock apps
Hey, can you make a video where you go thru your Peli case?
You bet! Thanks for watching!
love mixing station
I just got a 4 foot Stanley power strip with 12 outlets & a compressor for my tiny bedroom studio. I believe the term is Adulting…is it still cute to say that at 45?
I've never had a Radial that still worked after being dropped. JDI's, PRO-D2's, Pro AV1's, AV2's, etc. I've had terrible luck with them. I only use Whirlwind for DI's now.
Oh wow, that stinks! Whirlwind makes great stuff too. Top of the line analogue snakes but $$$! Thanks for watching man!
Sonnect Sound Bullet is a tool for the future
I gotta get one...
I’ve been using mixing station for a few months now. Do you have any recommendations for learning the app? I would love some good tutorial videos or templates to start with.
Thanks for this video. Any setup tips, or would you know where I could find info about how to configure the Edge Router as a wifi WAP for a mixer?
Radial has a really clever DI that is basicly an usb audio interface
Radial make great products. I'll have to check that one out.
what about a protective case for you iPad? seems like a pretty basic thing.
lol you got me bubba! thanks for watching!
Can I record* my mix into a daw on a separate laptop while simultaneously controlling* my mix via tablet on the mixing station app?
Yes!
@@chrisbradshaw5882 Ok, thank you so much!
Absolutely. It’s no different than recording the analog mix etc
Great information
Some good info here. Thanx
Glad you liked it and thanks for watching dude!
Check out Waves rack mount router/bluetooth
whoa.. that thing is robust! The gear head in me is having a hard time buying that just to test it out. Thanks for watching Peter!
@@SilverCreekAudio i know ,if you know, you know just gotta have💰💰
I sometimes dream of having a Radial AV2 or SB2 in my pocket to hand it over to the "soundman" at school or kid parties... the grotty laptop headphone sound makes my ear bleed every time.
Hi, the access point is just compatible with the edgerouter or It can be used with any router? I've been looking for one but didn't find anything good
I’ve seen someone use an apple AirPort Express for the router. I still have mine just in case lol
The allen and heath ipad app SUCKS. thanks for the advice!
you bet! thanks for watching!
Hello, @SilverCreekAudio
I saw in some of your videos a small box that apparently has speakon female and power female. I watches this video in hope to discover what is this, but you didn't listed it here. Could you explain what it's purpose?
It's a powerCON drop box for stage power. They're made by OA Windsor.
@SilverCreekAudio Thanks! Here in my location, the powercon isn't as common as speakon.
Maybe in another video you can film "live audio gear I ever used but you maybe not" for people that are starting in this world.
Can the access point work with any dual band router? Does it require a separate router? Using X/M32 world.
From where I"m standing, you've still got the best piece of equipment of all, which is a young body free of pain. If my 48-year-old ass never hauls another subwoofer across a parking lot again it will be too soon. 👴
Now all my clients are house of worship. I just bring myself, maybe some headphones and a laptop and I'm ready to go. 😁
Man, I'm gonna get there... but I'm still going at the moment! Thanks for watching!
@@SilverCreekAudio TIme comes for us all 😁
Like those stands
Can make a world of difference! Thanks for watching man!
Thank you, good info. And glad UA-cam algoritmo is working for you
Thanks man!
Honestly, X32 is here to stay. :-D
For the price, especially now if you can get your hands on one, it just works. Wondering what kind of impact the Wing Rack unit will have on portable rigs like I have. Thanks for watching!
@SilverCreekAudio I'm kinda peeved because our college finally bought a digital console and the compact Wing comes out. 🙄
Kinda bummer. 😅
What about RF and explorer? Or some frequency coordination app etc.
absolutely! WWB would be a good addition to the list!
💪☺ PRO Mode! 💙
I have always heard that audio lines can suffer interference from power cables and should be separated.
What do you think?
I've never had one problem with the twin cables as far as interference.
Helpful....❤
Great video. Pelican case link doesn’t work though
Thanks! Should be fixed now!
Hi what sub would u suggest that will is a good compromise with the power, size, weight and price? Maybe 15inch? Thsnks!
I'd stick to 18" subs! Can't suggest any gear without knowing your budget though.. I wouldn't go too cheap on your PA, just as a rule of thumb.
@@SilverCreekAudio understood. my budget is around 2k more or less, i dont have a big van and logistics is a challenge. i like the 18inch but realisticly i might only haul a 15 plust im just starting ang have no crew :) i appreciate your reply thank you very much!
Great Video
Thanks dude!
What's the load ramp to your van that you're using? I need one!
It's a Link LSR90. I think it's 108".
Hello, what are you using to tie your pelican cases to your 4 wheel cart ?
It's a ratchet strap. I have all of them linked in my van tour video description.
@@SilverCreekAudio I just watched it. Thank you! I am a guitar player that also owns all the PA system and it is the audio engineer for the bands that I play with. I have been thinking about just renting and be the audio engineer as a side hustle.
The app mix station work with the flow 8 digital mixer?
I don't believe so.
Could you share your layout file for mixing station
Twin cables? What happened to the rule, don't run power parallel to audio? Hmmmm 60hz (50hz)
Never been an issue. Thanks for watching Foot!
Wait until you start doing video too ... and you discover this magic device called a Decimator.
It's sole purpose in life is to make things that don't connect together connect together, and it's insanely good at it.
Friend of mine calls it a "video de-f*ckerator"
