    This show leans so much more into realistic trauma, and I'm all for it. (This is likely why this version of Katara is more subdued at first that the animated. Kiawentiio wears Katara's pain beautifully)

    I'm so glad you're the type of viewer that isn't toxic. Like it's ok to criticize, heck there's a lot to criticize, but there are moments that are great, there are changes and scenes that are amazing. It's like when you're a kid and your family throws you a party and the cake might not be super fancy, the present might not be that expensive toy, but you're with your family and you know how much they worked for that so you just enjoy it either way. It's not good to be a toxic fan, that explodes at the sheer thought of someone criticizing their "baby", but it's not good to be a toxic hater. And I feel like this series many people are either on one side or the other and we rarely saw someone who watches it with an open mind.

      @@deithlanExcept the show isn't a free thing that's just given to you out of your Netflix's generosity. It's a product that you as a consumer pay for. The better analogy is a Specialty restaurant. Your favorite dish is only served in this one restaurant. The dish itself isn't the best. It looks appetizing and looks like the traditional dish that you grew up on and the service is great, but the flavor isn't there, not the right texture, and there's no substance.
      Will you keep going to this resto if their every dish is like this? Sure, if you're fine with being served a mediocre product. Personally, I wouldn't. If you blow up like an entitled Karen, that's certainly a reflection on your character. But if you approach the staff and tell them in a civil manner what you don't like... There's a chance of getting actual improvement and a better meal.

    • @AngeloBarovierSD
      @AngeloBarovierSD Місяць тому

      @@casualpotato44Great. But if there’s a table in the room having a grand time and saying how much they love the food, there is absolutely no need to go over and explain to them why they shouldn’t like the service or why they’re wrong to be having fun.
      Moreover, it’s just being a buzzkill and ruining someone else enjoyment because they feel compelled to share an unsolicited opinion.
      That’s what toxic fans do - and, to be fair, those sort of fans exist in every fandom. Unnecessarily negative people raining on others’ parade serve no productive function when they present their subjective experience as an objective evaluation.
      There is no accounting for taste.
      Let people enjoy things.

    At 18:33 (when Katara sees her mom) and I gotta say. It's such a common trope in shows and movies, someone sees a loved one they've lost, and sometimes they're tempted to stay, or etc, and then they do this "I'm gonna stay strong and blah blah" moments. And I never really understood how hard that would be, how emotionally devastating that is, or how tempting it would be to stay in an "illusion" until I lost my brother. If I ever turned around and my brother was standing there, smiling, and asking me what's up. I don't know if I'd have the strength to "wake up". The price I would pay for one solid firm hug is immeasurable. So I just wanna say, whoever is out there reading this, if a loved one did some small thing you're annoyed by forgive them, if you're too busy to go do something with them and it can wait, go see them. When I was young and watching sci fi and time travel shows I'd dream of going back and seeing historical things, going to cool eras. But now all I'd ever go back to is to one day where I said no to doing something together.

    Don't remember if they showed it in the cartoon, but the death of Katara's mother hits harder when you realised she's partly to blame for it. If she hadn't tried to waterbend the soldier might have moved on. Hell of a lot to put on a kid.

    • @nope19568
      @nope19568 3 місяці тому

      gotta disagree with you guys here because she does feel responsible in the og, shed learned later it was a raid for waterbenders and on top of that because up to that point they had only ever just taken people when she was able to get to her dad after her mom told her to run to save her (partially now adding to the feeling of not being fast enough to have done anything) which leads to hakoda finding the body, it wouldve hit for me if we saw him go in and never saw the burnt remains but just heard a man sob and scream and beg for the love of his life to come back to him and show sokka shielding katara from trying to go in and katara just screaming and crying, you could then cut to a funeral scene to expand on how the watertribe deals with death in their culture and show off what probably wouldve been shown in the cartoon if they couldve but didnt cuz a y7 rating

    • @dezaera
      @dezaera 3 місяці тому +4

      My take on this was that Katara's mother faked the waterbending intentionally, knowing full well the consequences. I don't think the soldier would have moved on, necessarily. Rather, he would have taken her to his superior officers where they'd realize she wasn't the waterbender they were after. That would then put Katara at risk again. By attempting to waterbend, she was forcing his hand to act in self defense, even if it was a lie. That, to me, is even more tragic.

    Lot of people are criticizing these couple of episodes, but I think it’s perfect for what they’re adapting. They want to have a moment where Aang goes to rescue his friends, gets separated, then captured - for the iconic Blue Spirit scene. However, getting frogs to lick isn’t moving the story forward. Rescue from Koh is a lot more thrilling than they’re sick and get instantly better from licking frogs.
    This is also the only space in the story to reveal the Spirit World. Since the characters nor the general audience knows. Wan Shi Tong, the spirit of knowledge, is put there to give exposition on the Spirit World. Also serves to give Aang a great moment with Monk Gyatso to remove Aang’s guilt.

      He's 100% setting them up against each other, but he doesn't seem to have it out for zuko like he did in the cartoon. He seems like he genuinely is testing him and Azula, and wants Zuko to prove himself as his son. Still more satisfied with Azula as an heir, but WAY less harsh on Zuko than in the original where he hated him long before banishment. I love that they took a page out of Legend of Korra when introducing the spirit world. Just like Korra could met Iroh in the spirit world, Aang gets chance to met Gyatso again. They also establish that the spirit world is an actual world, where all the spirits live and can move around. In 'The Last Airbender' it seemed as if all the spirits were trapped at the locations where Aang saw them. Also, revealing Wang Shi Tong this early hopefully means we're going to see a lot more to him in season 2 and 3!

    I love watching your reactions so much! Your ability to watch these episodes and enjoy them for what they are and not constantly nit pick for what they aren't is so refreshing. The addition of Sokka's trauma with his dad being disappointed in his abilities i know is different then the original but when you really think about it makes person sense and was a nice touch. For one gives his character more depth and deeper motivations. Also it gives you even more of a parallel between not only Zuko and Sokka but also Ozai and Hakoda! Two sons desperately seeking approval of there fathers and two Fathers dissapointed with there sons. One father banishes his son the other father abandoned his son and daughter. For a good reason and motivation to protect them i get it but i can't wait to see where the writers go with this. I won't include spoilers here but lets just say seasons 2 and 3 are gonna be filled with a lot more tear bending😭😂

    this will be touched on later even though its in the comics so i wont spoil it completely, but kuruk wasn’t entirely unfocused on his duties as avatar… he was just entirely too focused on ONE aspect of the avatar.
    every avatar has had to deal with the consequences of other avatar’s mistakes. for aang, that was roku’s lack of action in making sure the fire nation didn’t grow a big head. for roku, it was kiyoshi’s uber long life causing instability in the balance of the four nations, which in turn made the fire nation grow into being the most powerful. im not 100% sure but she may have been too focused on her own people and or the earth kingdom? anyway, for kiyoshi, she had to deal with the ramifications of kuruk’s decisions.
    every action has an opposite reaction in terms of the avatar world haha. there must always be balance

    It's odd, I personally liked the voice over of Gyatso at the end but I have heard several people complain that it was bad - that you should "show not tell". There are times I would agree that a voice over is a weak way to move a story forward but I have come to realise that there is nothing wrong with it, just with it being over used. Sometimes I find a well done monologue is the best way to express a thought. Yes, showing is good, but hearing the internal thoughts have its place as well.

    one thing that bugs me, we haven't seen Sokka show much of any emotion regarding their mother's death. it's like that in the original too, he would talk about it, but he wouldn't really seem traumatized or sad or angry in the same way Katara was. and I really like how they're showing Azula to be so desperately trying to hide how afraid she is, I think being on Ozai's bad side is probably the worst thing in the world. she was just a kid. she deserved better. I hope in the comics at least we get to see her get some good things and some healing.

    I really don't like how they handled Koh. Let me rephrase, because Koh's appearance and VO are perfect, but the actual way they told the story around him. Instead of Ang talking to past Avatars we get book-owl, which exchanges a lot of information and context about Koh for a bit of fan-service. Which in turn, now makes Ang "just somehow resistant" to Koh, instead of knowingly controlling his emotions.

  • @geminicricket4975

    I suspect that Wan Shi Tong's appearance means that the Library is gonna be cut from next season. I think that's why the Cave of Two Lovers also appeared early in this season too. A lot goes on in season two so they're probably making room for the Chase, Toph & Ba Sing Se. We shall see.

    • @sherra-sama
      @sherra-sama 3 місяці тому +1

      I dunno, I can't imagine they'd spend the time and budget on such a good model to never plan to reuse it. I think the reasoning was more along the lines of making sure it got a little screentime in case the series didn't get renewed, which was still unsure until recently.

    • @ThisIsMyFullName
      @ThisIsMyFullName 3 місяці тому +5

      I fully expect that it means we'll see even more of Wan Shi Tong, that's why they're introducing him this early, so when he shows up in season 2 we already know who he is and think he can be trusted, so the Library scene will be even better! As for Cave of Two Lovers, I think they put it in here to further evolve Sokka and Katara's relationship, and then their plan is to slowly show Aang and Katara growing closer over the span of both season 2 and 3 instead.

    • @geminicricket4975
      @geminicricket4975 3 місяці тому

      While I can't say you guys are wrong anymore than I can say I'm right, they do need to compress the story. And that's what they did, not just by mashing plots together but by dropping some entirely.

    Sadly i felt this episodes missed out on what could have been some amazing opportunities within the spirit world despite they had such a short time to compile all the spirit realm stories into 1 episode here. (one that leads into the next episode) but for this episode i really wish they either held off using Wan Shi Tong for season 2 (or at the very least bring him back for the sand temple story arc in the future and dont cut that out of season 2 as i loved that arc, im basically hoping this character continues in the future) there were some cool moments though Gyatso was a great moment there, and i really enjoyed Koh voiced by George Takei was brilliantly done even though he was creepy AF. thanks again for your reaction cant wait for episode 6. While I think this episode is the weakest of the adaptation, because it feels ALL OVER THE PLACE, and it omitted my favourite bit about Koh - the fact you can't show emotions around him, and humans are among the few creatures who show our emotions on our face so we are clearly his preferred prey, and it would have been such an EASY thing to include - it also did some really cool stuff. June is amazing and I really hope we get more of Arden Cho as this iconic character in the future, she deserves it! Wan Shi Tong looks dope and I do hope that means they used his appearance here as a setup for the library later. And we got more Gyatso which is always lovely, and the fog visions of Katara and Sokka were both heartbreaking. And yes, Koh also still is absolutely terrifying. So yeah, a bit chaotic, this episode, but still some awesome stuff in there.
