One of the most memorable scenes for me was when Sokka said every single time I try to remember my mother‘s face I think of Katara. she put so much effort in filling that role for him that he healed a lot quicker before she could. She had to go on a whole ark, with Zuko finding the man who murdered her mother.

As a woman, especially one who grew up with the masterpiece of Avatar, I refuse to watch the Netflix version. They told everyone that they were removing Sokka's sexism, a key element that he learns to move past, I knew they would 100% mess every character up. I knew that Katara and Toph would get the worst of it. Especially Katara. Femininity is so integral to her character. She's the mom of the group. She takes care of them, mends their clothes, is a person to cry and vent to, all while being strong in her own right.

@@StupidCatLady Yeah, with her mom-energy, she helped keep the group in line at times. She basically had the curse of being forced to behave like a parent before she even became an adult. It makes her a rather interesting character, beyond her powers - which... I heard they made her a "self-taught girl boss" and I instantly lost all interest in the show. That's saying a lot, especially with how I love her well-earned boss moments in the OG show: finding the man who axed her mother and the bloodbending episode - both very dark but really good episodes that tested her character. She might not be one of my favorites, but she's still top-tier.
Though with all this talk, it reminds me that, personally, as a guy, I wasn't into effeminate girls for a long while. But the older I get, the more that changes, and the more I appreciate that kind of woman, especially mothers.

If you wanna talk storytelling, we can talk storytelling. We can talk how the removal of character aspects from either character drastically impacts the story and irreparably damages later arcs. Katara becoming more motherly after her mother’s death is what lead to the heart to heart between toph and sokka on book 3. Man said he can’t remember what his mom looked like and when he tries to, it’s katara’s face that he sees

  • @garrettviewegh9028
    @garrettviewegh9028 5 місяців тому +41

Another interesting trait of Katara in the original show, that made her more of a stronger character, was that she was susceptible to turning to the other extreme of overly compassionate on the spectrum: hateful wrath. Revenge. In the episode where Katara and Zuko hunt down the firebender that took her mother, she uses blood bending quite often. To interrogate somone, to torture the man that stole away her mom. She saw the man as the sole reason her family became so broken. She’d even stopped the rain during that confrontation. Even Zuko was shocked when he witnessed her use blood bending. It was probably the first time he’d seen it, and the hateful expression on Katara’s face, may have only amplified the shock and dread Zuko felt then. But, though he spared him, because his life ended up so pathetic and empty, she still didn’t forgive him. Not everyone deserves to be saved, or redeemed. Not everyone deserves forgiveness. But, Katara did finally reconcile with Zuko, realizing the anger she felt for him, the *hate* was misplaced. In the moment she’d almost killed that firebender, you got the vibe, that Katara would’ve flooded the Fire Nation in the sea if she’d had the chance.

why Toph is so masculine is for 2 reasons her strong-willed personality as well as that's just who she is and her overbearing parents especially her mother who gave her a bad perception of femininity as she cared about her as her noble daughter instead of her as her daughter and so she acted the exact opposite of what was expected of her in in an extreme way when joining team avatar, to see Katara and toph who butted heads as polar opposites to becoming good friends is phenomenal and good writing when they got there, to have an understanding as well as Katara showing a good representation and role model of femininity was just amazing, to see Toph who was constantly offended by acts of kindness and concerns towards her to accepting and appreciating it as she realize it's not because they view her as weak and helpless but because they actually care about her ( all thanks to Iroh's advice, insight, and wisdom)

Katara’s whole character arc is a reaction to Sokka’s outlook on females, that’s literally how the series even starts… she gets angered by Sokka’s taunts and ends up breaking the ice and freeing Aang.
    Now, the boat did it😂😂😂
Without Katara’s emotional reactions to situations, she cannot grow. That’s literally her whole character. But now, she’s just “strong” and doesn’t need to face any emotional obstacles whatsoever lol.
Speaking of Aang, bro went from “can you go penguin sliding with me?!” As his first words to, “I’m serious, no fun muuuuh” 😂😂😂
I will NEVER watch this live action, even if the seasons 2 and 3 fix all the issues, I’d much rather rewatch the animated books a million times over. Honestly, they should’ve just remade the animation with 4K quality and better animation with extended fights here and there, instead of this one… but even that would probably try to “fix” the “problems” the old animated series had, so I’d rather they don’t even touch it.

Your flaws and your virtues are all a part of who you are, and everyone should be able to see you for _who_ you are, and there's nothing wrong with being that person and wanting to be treated as one. I once read a theory that tried to explain how that tradition came to be. It posited that during early wars where both genders fought alongside each other the tribe noticed that families with two benders where at risk of losing both parents, leading them to ban having both parents of a household in conbat roles.
The genders then gravitated towards a slightly skewed split in roles which over time and with parental reinforcement over generations evlolved into the tradition as it was during ATLA.

      2. The creators of the show originally planned a muscle head boy for Toph, but thought it would be more entertaining for that character archetype to be a little girl instead. Best decision they ever made.
      3. Considering that they had to ask a bunch of people to make that play in their world, I love the idea that they depicted Toph as this massive brute because the people they asked refused to acknowledge they were beaten up by a little girl to save face.

One other aspect of Katara's character arc when it comes to her bending that the live action removed entirely and that never really gets mentioned: one of her motivations for wanting to be a water-bender (though certainly not the biggest) was the fact that she was preserving a part of the culture of the Southern Water Tribe. She's the last of her kind. She's the only water bender of the Southern tribe still alive (at least until S3 when we meet Hama). But one of the reasons that she wants to learn waterbending is to carry on the tradition and culture of her tribe. This is why she's so excited when she meets Hama and actually gets to learn from someone who was a part of the same culture. This is also partly why she's so upset when Hama reveals her bloodbending ability that horrifies Katara. While she loves that Hama is from her tribe, it pains her to see her reduced to a state of nothing but hatred and revenge.

Everything they did with Zuko’s character was amazing.
But taking out Sokka’s character arc was…well it left his character more flat..
He was a good actor but the story didn’t really hit hard.
Wasn’t too fond of them having Aang simply telling us how he felt instead of showing us.
Yeah he’s a kid, but it felt like they made him way too serious.
Not to mention they didn’t even have Aang waterbend on his own once.
    Plus many more problems.
I’m honestly starting to really agree with your rating the more I think about it.

Katara's mother's death in the LA Avatar really confused me because they made her mother act like she was going to waterbend and the Southern Raiders fire bender reacted. Which makes his action of killing her more "understandable" in that situation. When in the original, the Southern Raiders Captain tells her "we aren't taking prisoners today" and kills her in cold blood! Like why would they do this?! Why would they LESS of an unforgivable villain? Him doing that is one of the main things that fuels Katara's rage in season 3 when she confronts him. Were they just wanting to make her mother look stronger by fighting back rather than her turning herself in? Why would she endanger herself like that in front of her daughter when she most likely knew that she would probably be killed if she fought back? Idk that's one of the main things that really frustrated me.

On another note, the end season fight between Master Paku and Katara was so underwhelming in the live action version. Any of her other fight scenes were more impressive looking x.x Not to mention the bending in the series looks a lot less like martial arts than in the animated version....not sure if that was just me thinking that or not

The original creators walked away because they felt their creative vision wasn't being respected. Right at the begining of production! That's it. No more debating, no arguments no nothing. This show lost any good faith it could have had from that point onwards, it literally doesn't deserves a chance. And that is why I will never watch it, it is literally not even worth pirating, it is only deserving of indiference.

With what I've seen of the live action and what they did... I'm scared to see what they do for when Hakoda enters into the story

They took away Sokka 's sexism,...in a scene that wasn't cringe and made Pakkun more sexist and put in a cringey woman assembled scene smack dab in the middle of the northern water tribe invasion

If I know Netflix. When we get to Alabasta, they're just gonna make not so subtle lesbian subtext with Vivi and Nami

    Speaking of speeches about hope
Im reminded of an episode of gene rodenbarrys Andromeda
Harper (a guy from earth who is good with tech) and tyr (a mercenary out for his own personal gain) are captured by horrible creatures called magog (alien creatures that reproduce by planting larva into live hosts and can spit a variety of poisons from glands in their face) anyway Harper is freaking out and constantly going over how the two of them would die. Tyr looks at Harper and starts a speech about how slim the odds were that Harper was even born.... Harper cuts him off by saying "if you're going to give me that life from hope bull crap....... Good, cause I could really use it right now" and that is how you do a "hope speech" correctly. One persons hope and confidence is like a campfire. Its warm and bright, it draws you in with an offer of warmth and shelter. As more people gather that campfire grows into a raging bonfire and soon an unstoppable inferno. All it takes is one person to spark the flames.

Yeah, it was Mulan's will/spirit, which lead to her putting herself into an unimaginable situation for anyone else in the entirety of her own country.
To see how much she struggled compared to the men alongside her despite themselves not being exceptional and push through to develop her skills, overcoming the natural differences with her ingenuity in adapting.
Which hich she gradually becomes more confident with over the course of the movie, until the end, where despite how she's been shunned by her whole country especially those she's developed a close bond with through the defence of their homeland, she pushes through to protect the emporer, confident in her ability to do so because of her experience & growth.

One thing they changed about Katara that I didn’t hear in this video is her waterbending *style.* In this, especially during her fight with Paku, it looks like seems figure skating instead of using martial arts. It’s incredible how they so utterly eviscerated her character(along with the other characters) all the way down to how she fights. Amazing.
