I do like the change of making Yue a waterbender here. Since the moon spirit is the one who gives people the ability to waterbend, I can’t imagine why she shouldn’t have that ability. Even when the koi fish was killed, she can still do it due to drawing the moon’s power inside of her which makes sense.

I honestly enjoyed this series and can’t wait for Season 2. But the only criticism I have to give is how Aang and Katara were never taught waterbending by Pakku at all. I understand that Katara is a prodigy and a quick learner but she still had to be taught by Pakku to become as good as she did in the original series. It’s hard to believe she became a master just from a single waterbending scroll. I never imagined that Aang would never waterbend even once in the entirety of this one season which is based on Book One: Water.

    • @kevinsims5791
      @kevinsims5791 7 місяців тому +7

Katara got better from all her practice plus constant fightning from firebenders, not just the scroll. Maybe the beginning of next season they can so some training since they are still in the north. The live action version gave more agency for them going north because they knew a tragedy was going to happen so there was less time. The cartoon didnt have quite that kind of agency.

He already mourned the loss of Aang and his people, but now he is standing in front of him, which probably caused so much trauma in his head because now he feels abandoned, like "I've been suffering with my people for 100 years and their may not be anyone in the whole world older than me that has been fighting as long as I have, and you just wander in here like nothing changed".

There's a lot I liked and a lot I didn't like about the live action. My favorite change was that they dropped the storyline of Paku being engaged to GranGran. It never sat right wit me that that was the reason he gave Katara respect, and that GranGran decided to get back with him all those years later? icky. Love that in the live action he respected Katara from her own merit. Shoutout to the 41st division detail also- that was a phenomenal addition.
My least favorite change is how they jumped right into Iroh being on the avatars side and his backstory. In the og that took longer to for the audience to learn and that's what made it feel so worth it. I feel like while OG season 1 it was always evident that Iroh's cared more about Zuko than the fire nation, it wasn't until the Zhao harmed the moon spirit that we really saw that Iroh's priorities lay in worldly balance rather than the fire nation. And while the live action funeral scene was excellent, I wish they'd waited a season for it to feel more earned. This is getting nitpicky but I'm also really not a fan of how Aang was just "going out to clear his head" and getting lost in the storm in the live action, rather than running away from his responsibility and getting lost in the OG. It took away a lot of nuance to Aangs character that made him perfectly imperfect.

Also I have a feeling that Roku might let Aang in about Sozin's Comet since it was now brought up in the post credit scene. And while I will always love the Animated series, I genuinely loved the live action series as well.

People who don’t like the live action are those who can’t get over that it’s not supposed to be scene for scene like the animated series. Sure there’s some flaws but even the animated series has flaws. However, as an ADAPTATION!! The series was done so well and the spirit of the show was kept. That’s all you could ask for.

Yes exactly, they both did thing that are better than the other, one thing I liked in the LA is that they moved Katara's "we're your family now" speech to the end of the season, it makes way more sense now considering in the original the barley knew him when she said that, so moving it to the end gives them time to really bond and grow together so it feels more genuine that way.

@@atorothcassidy4866 The live action did episode 1, the blue sprit, and siege of the north so much better than the original. Just like the original the live action had bed episodes also. But what the live action is doing with Zuko and Iroh is way better than the original. However, they do have the luxury of the animated series knowing that zuko and iroh aren’t actually bad guys.

I feel a big change they made with his version of Zuko is that he is much more emotionally intelligent, compared to the original animated version. He's very much aware, and grateful, of Iroh's support and companionship (which makes the events of Season 2 that much more heartbreaking). Rather, he's just completely influenced by and conditioned into wanting to please Ozai. Which is classic coercive control.

9:28 I mean they probably can do some amount of waves but there is a limit to how much they can do (it took 2 each to make those large jets) and boats are designed to handle some pretty crazy waves. I mean Katara at the start season 3 was barely able to push a ship enough to give them some separation and that was sideways whereas these are coming in head on and boats are practically designed to handle waves front on best.

I really love your positivity about this live action version - it gets way too much hate from people who mostly seemed determined to hate it before it even came out.
I really loved the addition of Aang communing with the prior avatars, and I adored pretty much everything they did with the fire nation characters.
My only complaint is that they split up the main trio for side quests so often that their relationships don't feel as deep and meaningful as they should by this point. But they built enough of a foundation to fix that in season 2. I'm so looking forward to seasons 2 and 3.

I know people complaining about them calling Katara a master in this already, we know in the show she for sure becomes a master but at this point I kinda see their point... BUT, if they follow the same rules as the air benders, to be a master you have to invent a new move and she did, the ice discs, it shows her mastery over her element to do that. Yes the earth benders already did it, but she is implied to be the first water bender to do it with ice. Which isn't even the base bending. So it could be why the boy warrior called her master knowing those rules and that the discs were a new thing.

I mostly enjoyed this series, with a few pain points here and there (I disagree with the thought that not jaded Bumi couldn’t work in this, I’m sure he could’ve been used as a positive contrast to the darkness around). I think they did mostly well. In regards to this episode, a few things for me…
    1) I..don’t like the change to Zhao’s death. I much preferred the Ocean taking him as vengeance..or justice. The interaction that led to it is reminiscent of their Agni Kai early in cartoon book 1, but Zuko tries to actually kill him and misses, and instead of just blocking Zhao, Iroh kills him. With Zuko, I think it was a miss to have him actually go for the kill than try to save Zhao or intentionally miss, showing that he, in a way, still has compassion and mercy to separate him more from Azula and Ozai.
    2) Katara being a master. It’s..an issue I have with the cartoon as well, due to what determines the title being never really said or anything. *it works for themes and fantasy*, but it was weird, especially after having taken a little bit of martial arts that had tests and such, to just be deemed a master or consider yourself one after a confidence boost and a random NWT guy call you that. The “yeah, you’re looking at her” kinda just felt clunky to me? I can’t put my finger on that one. But that applies..honestly not just to Katara but the cartoon as a whole as well. The whole concept is just…you know, it was really unclear.
    3) I love Katara’s speech here to Koizilla Aang, but, and suuuuuper minor gripe on the directing, I wish it felt like she was saying it in a way he might actually hear it? Like Zhao’s speech in “Masks”, it felt like she was talking to someone 3 feet from her, and all I had in my head was the Kung Fu Panda 2 scene where Po is trying to yell a speech at Shen and the peacock just goes…”WWWHHHAAAAATTTT?!?!”

How dumb the Firebenders must be if Sozin's Comet returning is a surprise to them. Thing was every 100 years like clockwork, and that's how Sozin took advantage of it. The Airbenders knew about it.
But Ozai needs this mechanical thing to tell him about it? What a dingus.

I think the writers misunderstood Yue's sacrifce. In this version Yue gives her life to resurrect the Moon Spirit, but in the animated version Yue doesn't die, she undergoes an apotheosis and becomes the Moon Spirit.
I guess they'll revisit that in season two, but not showing Yue's spirit rising from the water as the Moon Spirit really missed a chance for a beautiful image.

Too many people I feel are way too critical towards it and don't get me wrong, there are things to criticize but I feel like a lot of people don't really take the time to really think about the things they're critiquing and are just saying stuff or just want a play by play copy of the cartoon. I really appreciate how open minded you were especially to the child actors. I've seen a lot of criticisms about their acting (one even being visibly angry by it which was concerning) and I feel like some people don't always get that child actors deserve the chance to get better as they go along. Overall, I really enjoyed the adaption despite the flaws. I think a lot of the criticisms I have are things that can be worked on.

I kind of wish they recreated the Aang getting sucked into the water as it was such a stylistic moment in the cartoon/anime. but otherwise Kaiju fish was perfect.
I really like that Yue figured out what she had to do over being prompted by Iroh, it gives her more agency in her sacrifice. sad no Ghost kiss though.

The one change I was hoping for is that Zuko, instead of killing Zhao would defeat then capture him and send him back on the air ship to explain to the Fire Lord how he lost the ENTIRE fleet save for one prototype air ship, and 1 ship crewed by the 41st, as a way to show that the plan his sister backed, failed miserably! Or maybe send him back WITH the 41st if they start season 2 with Iroh and Zuko on their own

    • @joshbuoy8661
      @joshbuoy8661 7 місяців тому

Wouldn’t that first idea of yours change the direction of Zuko’s journey drastically? Like by them beginning of season 2 he’s already back at the fire nation? That could be… interesting I suppose but I’m curious if you have a grander vision for that direction because that would probably require a complete rewrite of Zuko’s journey from there on out.
Edit: Okay maybe not necessarily let him back in since he still hasn’t fulfilled the mission of capturing the avatar, but it would still alter Ozai’s perception of Azula and Zhao quite a bit, which actually works for this adaptation since Azula isn’t treated as the golden child. You know what? That’s not a bad idea now that I think about it. It could play into season 2 to enhance Azula’s motivation of getting her hands dirty and handling things herself.

I love your reactions, and I have enjoyed your reactions to this live action series. Having watched the original several times, I love these characters as well, but I was an adult when this show came out, so I don't have childhood nostalgia attached, and I'm not a purist. I can love the original and still enjoy this interpretation, which I do. It's really been refreshing to follow your reactions.
My biggest criticism of this iteration is the writing and some of the narrative decisions. I did not mind mixing storylines. That was efficient use of the time given, especially when an overlap could work. if they needed to, maybe extend the episodes to accommodate the combined stories. Slow it down just a bit, give the story room to breathe. Another 10 minutes on some episodes could have really helped, imo.
Aang not waterbending is a real controversial issue. I think they did themselves and the actor (Gordon) a disservice because his character does nothing but complain that he needs to become the Avatar but does nothing to make it happen. And while I am aware he was deeply grieving the genocide of his people, the way they chose to convey that was poorly written. Having Gordon repeat the same dialogue nearly verbatim, that it's his fault, he needs to be the Avatar, he needs to start his training, got old fast. I lay that responsibility at the feet of the writers, and anyone else involved with developing the script and making sure tv episodes are cohesive.
So Aang's lack of waterbending got annoying after a while and it's clearly not an oversight. This is a deliberate choice. I can only assume they wanted to wait until after they got renewed for the next season to start that journey of becoming a fully realized Avatar. Not to mention, Gordon will be older and bigger and we'll see about other potential developments.
My other concern was Bumi. The changes fit this darker world but I just did not care for it.
My final narrative concern is the rule about only calling on the past Avatars in their shrines. We know that rule never existed before. I feel this could become a problem but who knows how future seasons will play out.
Anyway, that said, I have thoroughly enjoyed myself. I wish the fandom was gentler with these young actors. Let's not make perfection the enemy of the decent/enjoyable.

Also, that last exchange between Zhao and Zuko was pretty amazing. You know that there had to be people in the Fire Nation who were saying that Iroh should have become the Firelord instead of Ozai because he was firstborn and Ozai was secondborn. It makes me think that Ozai made a decision at some point to favor his secondborn child over his firstborn to prove all those people wrong. That Agni Kai with Zuko was more about teaching Azula the proper lesson instead of Zuko, and it's pretty clear that he was successful in this.

Zuko rankings, based on my over all opinion -
    1) Dante Boscp (he will always be the top one)
    2) Dallas Liu (he was perfect for this version; I loved that Dallas was able to show more than just Zuko's anger - much more realistic characterization. It's not until Book Two that we get to see Dante's range)
    3) Bruce Davidson - Granted his Zuko was of a different generation and a different series, but for what was needed, he gave a first rate performance.
    4) Derek Basco - Yeah, a parody, but a brilliant one and this my list (not meaning to hyjack your video, Angela) so I'm including him
    4) There was another Zuko? Seriously, making the Fire Nation Indian and the dance number the earth benders had to perform, just made the who thing seem like a Ballywood musical adaptation. Dev Patel is a decent actor, but wasn't right for this role. I though he was less two dimensional that a cardboard cutout.
As a fan of the animated series, and one who was questioning the series once Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko left the live action, I really liked what they did here. I know you didn't like they way Bumi was done here, but I liked the way they fit him in. I was surprised mostly with "Spirited Away" with the complete rewrite of the Hei-bi story. I do like that they drew on other sources of the show like Kora and the comics (I never knew about The Mother Faces or the relationship to Koh). I think the most emotional impact for me was the last meeting of Aang and Gyatso. Lim Kay Siu was a really good choice. When he told Aang there wasn't anything he could have done during the fire nation attack...I still tear up thinking about that performance.
Overall, I am very happy with how this came out. It doesn't take away from my love of the animated series, and I'm excited for season 2 and 3. And, I can't wait to watch them along side your reactions. Toph will be interesting, and I wonder what Michaela Jill Murphy will say about her.

I really wish the Once Piece adaption had come out before they started filming Avatar. They both were filming around the same time and Avatar went more of the traditional Hollywood adaption rout and pulled away from the more "cartoony" personalities of the characters. The traditional belief is that it doesn't work in live action. What I loved about Once Piece was they didn't hold back. They pushed the characters right up to the edge of being "too cartoony", but it gave them so much personality and character. They felt like their animated counterparts. I enjoyed this adaption overall, but they could have pushed the personalities of the characters much further. I missed Aang's goofy childish excitement of the world. I missed Sokka's lame dad jokes and overall over the top expressiveness. And I missed Katara's motherly assertiveness. They just felt like shells of their animated counterparts and One Piece proved that saying "you have to do that for live action" isn't true. I feel like if they had seen the success of One Piece before writing Avatar, they would have pushed it even more.

Master here is not denoting mastery, but a comparison ones of skill who is the teacher vs another who is the student. Each time the term is used for Katara here it is in this context. They never say she is a master waterbender in total.
When Zuko said it she was teaching herself mostly, so when she replies it was a simple quip.
When the northern waterbending boys call her master it is because they were told to follow her instructions and assist her - in recognition that she is better at waterbending than the boys.
When Pakku calls her master he is referring to her being Aangs teacher - aka Master.
None of that implies she is better than Pakku, who is a Master Waterbender because he also easily defeated her despite Katara being better than a majority of his pupils.

Roku was way more serious in the cartoon, like when he show up at Jeong Jeong "YOU THINK I AM WEAK". Speaking of Jeong Jeong I missed him for sure but there are a few thing that were left out that I think weren't actually left out but moved up to season 2. Just as they moved a few season 2 moments down to season 1 like the secret tunnel scene. I believe that the earth bender prison ship and Haru to focus on the earth Kingdom in season 2 as well as Jeong Jeong.

However, when it comes to most everything else, I feel the writing was often lacking. Sometimes the excess of exposition was sometimes laughable. Dialogue in general struggled in my opinion. For me, it isnt even about changes or whether they stayed true, it's really a writing thing for me. I would give it about a 6/10. Its a bit of a confusing 6/10 for me because there were things that i not only liked, but loved. I'll probably still watch season 2.

I agree. The story mix-up was fine with me, as well. 😊
I liked the first 3 episodes a lot, but I absolutely LOVED ep. 4 🥰
King Bumi was not as fun, but I totally got his bitterness after 100 years of war. So that was also okay. Adding the funeral with this amazing version of leaves from the vine... OMG, I cried days. 😅
Episodes 6-10 were okay. I understand the anger of the community about relatable Azula in this adaptation, but I also can go for her being humanized. Zhao was okay. The ruthless, animated one I liked better. Backstory to the crew was a nice addition.
    BUT
    Episode 5 was a mess.
I was disappointed about Koh. Leaving out the emotion part was unnecessary. Adding Wan Shi Tong was just stupid and without sense. Finally, I also didn't like Roku much.
But we got a stunning Kyoshi in the series. 🤩 So it's evened out, I guess.😅
So I would go with 7-8/10
    or 3.5-4 out of 5.
    😊
Lastly, I love your reactions. You are emotional and always positive. Great character 🫂

Something that I didn't even notice the first time I watched but bothered me a little watching reactions is when they do closeups when they are on Appa's saddle, there's no wind. Moving like that there should be some blowing of hair or clothes but there isn't; it's all still which kinda kills the illusion of movement and makes it a bit more obvious they are just sitting in front of a green screen background (probably most obvious at the beginning of episode 5 and at the beginning of episode 7), and I hope they fix that next season but if they don't I'll just try to look past it.

Regarding Bumi, didn't like it , either. It took a little time for me to realize I wasn't meant to. The man himself, Iroh, called it when he said, "You may not like what you see." Then they turned around and literally made us not like what we saw. That' genius writing, acting, and directing right there. One can imagine that version of Bumi is who Sokka might have become left on his own to defend the Southern Water Tribe for another 80 or 90 years, a half world away from anyone with the ability or inclination to help him like Bumi was.

That ten fold comment felt out of place in the live action... if he said it a bit later and zhao actually reacted to it would have felt more epic

Yes I completely agree with you about how you feel about this adaptation! I only have a few issues with it but nothing too crazy where I’d drop the show lol. I’ve enjoyed it a lot and can’t wait for what’s in store for season 2 and 3!

I've rewatched this version about three times now, and I've noticed that you really start picking up some subtleties in it. It's not perfect; I felt like there were some pacing issues in the front half of the season that could have probably been fixed if they had done ten episodes instead of eight. There was some clunky dialogue in spots, but I don't really feel like it was on the actors for that. And there were a few VFX issues that needed to be tweaked (mostly that with waterbending, if someone, say, got hit with a water whip, they're still dry afterwards). Small nitpicks here and there, but overall, I felt they did a great job with this season. And I actually really enjoyed how Zhao was portrayed; he starts out conniving, but gets bolder and bolder with it as the season progressed. The disrespect he has towards Iroh and Zuko grew organically, and his fight with Zuko felt especially earned. He was the classic "reach far exceeds his grasp" character.
One thing I do hope they expand on a bit as the show goes on is the theme of destiny and fate, like how Aang was meant to go into the ice when he did, for instance. Had he not, how would that have affected Katara and her learning to waterbend? Would Toph have figured out metalbending? And so on. Destiny is touched on in the original show, but it would be cool to see them expand on it

you COULD just call it "Netflix's Avatar (tlab)"... which has been alright but not great... unlike *Netflix's She-Ra!* Which was *AWESOME* and was directly made possible by the Sapphic Moment that ended Korra!

I know I am totally an outlier here, but I liked this version better than the animated series. I didn't grow up with ATLAB like a lot of people did, I didn't even watch it until about 7 years after it was over. My first exposure was the movie. I liked the more condensed and fast paced story telling. I felt the original series dragged a bit at times. The only criticism I have is I don't appreciate the changes to Sokka and Katara. Removing his sexism and her anger issues turns them into flat characters that are going to lack the arcs they would eventually have. Like, I can't see this version of Katara doing the things Katara would eventually do when she's on the hunt for her mother's killer. And last...I kinda liked what they did with Bumi. I thought his anger and bitterness helped raise his character a bit, being bitter about the choices he had to make just to keep a city safe. I definitely feel in this version the over-rule of the Fire Nation is much of a threat than in the animated series.
    And Iroh is killin' it.

Between Wan Shi Tong getting a Spirit World cameo and the Fire Priests now being responsible for making the planetarium / orrery, I get the impression that they're planning on skipping the Library entirely in season 2.
Now, if they can just also skip losing Appa and most of the Ba Sing Se episodes, it'll be a much more enjoyable season.

Enjoyable, maybe. But good, absolutely not.
I don’t want them to skip the library as it’s probably the most vital episode in all of book 1 and 2 (exceptions being the boy in the iceberg and crossroads of destiny”

@@mranima748 It's vital because of the information they find there. If they find that information elsewhere, what's the issue?

I really liked this finale. Thought it was very true to the original spirit. The one thing that felt a bit forced here was the use of Momo’s injury as a way of getting Sokka and Yueh into the spirit Oasis, when they also had Kuruk doing the same thing with Aang. Something clunky about that. Just a small peeve though.
My main issue with the series is that the writing sometimes gets really clunky, like they didn’t trust the audience to figure stuff out and go along for the ride. Also I didnt feel like the Bumi change was that well thought out or executed. But maybe there is a plan.
I get people feeling the Aang gang was not enough of a focus - and it was shifted too much toward Zuko-Ozai-Azula (which I think was done beautifully except for Mai and Ty Lee). They really wanted Katara to own her own growth into a more confident self made master, but that growth was invisible, and an initially shy Katara robs the group of a lot of its inner dynamic. There is no emotional core other than each character’s doubts. Their stories are a bit individualized as a result, despite them always saying “with our friends.”
Overall, despite some clunkiness, I thought it was much better than I thought it would be. This is the first live action remake of an animated show that I have ever liked. I hate single number rankings, but if forced I give it a 7.5/10.

I have a generally positive viewpoint about this live action series. However, I don't like the changes they made to Bumi either, and I didn't like how they did the Spirit World plot with Katara and Sokka being trapped by Koh. Only the Avatar could go to the Spirit World in the original series. The only other thing I really didn't like was that Aang doesn't waterbend a single time in this season. Book 1 is Water, he is supposed to learn waterbending. Overall, I liked the Zuko and Iroh storyline and I want to see more.

I only have a few quibbles. Bumi as u mentioned. And it works but he is noticeably a different character and didn’t really need to be in my view.
Katara and aang not learning from pakku. I love everything else about that arc, but she needed his experience to become a master in the series. I like her gradually learning as she travels as in the animated series.
And the way she more explicitly shows him the error of his sexism in this version is a great improvement that would have allowed her to learn from him while also allowing her agency in showing him the error of his sexism which is a truer harder more applicable victory to me than - ohh she never needed this sexist cow to become a master.
Also changing iroh creeping on June to June creeping on iroh is ??? Like I get wanting to remove that from irohs arc, but how does it help to invert it? Seems really strange and double standardy to me.
We need more aang goofy time! But it’s hard with the tightened season.
But those don’t stop my enjoyment. It’s not perfect, but most of that for me is them trying to keep as much in as they could in the 8 episodes they got to work with. It was made by people with a clear great love for the series. Some of the new stuff may be unnecessary but most of it works really well. It was an impossible task and they did damn well. Not perfect but a solid good.
