      2) Gloria [Sound check at Los Angeles Aquarius theater 21.07.1969] min 06:02
      1) When the music's over [2nd show New York Felt Forum, 18.01.1970] min 09:59
By coincidence you can find the three songs in the album (in concert)

A friend of mine saw The Doors in London in 1968.
She said Morrison's voice was so powerful, he didn't need a microphone. To catch him at his best, just listen to "When The Music's Over".
He could croon like Sinatra or scream like hell. A great vocalist.

JDM had a beautiful baritone voice. He never had a voice lesson. Members of The Doors said that when they first formed, JDM’s voice was not so pleasant/good, which tells us that his singing was self-taught. Also, when he first began singing, he sang with his back to the audience, as he was not very confident as a singer. I’m glad he gained confidence as a singer and poet.

This is a really cool analysis of Jim's singing style! I have been a longtime fan of Jim and the Doors since my teens. When I was in college in the 90s, my American literature teacher had us read Jim's poetry books! That was fun. Jim is a true "performance artist." He was very conscientious about his whole stage presentation in regards to the lyrics and his self-expression of his lyrics. My favorite Doors tunes that demonstrate a variety of Jim's vocal performance are: Light My Fire, Break on Through, LA Woman, Riders on the Storm, When the Music's Over, Love Her Madly, Love Street, Love Me Two Times, Hello I Love You, Peace Frog, Spanish Caravan and Roadhouse Blues. So many good songs that are truly classic rock! :) 🎸🎶

@@lorenheard2561 Yes he was a cool teacher. It was total serendipity! I learned alot about Jim's poetry, which inspired me to read books about Jim, like "The Lizard King." Did you know Jim nicknamed himself "Mr. Mojo Risin" which contains the letters in his name? (He also sang "Mr Mojo Risin" in "LA Woman) Jim was amazingly creative, as were/are all the Doors musicians.
I also had the good stroke of luck while in college to meet John Densmore! Another serendipity, because he was playing a one-man show on my college campus (in South Dakota, USA of all unlikely places), and after the show, I attended a social mixer as part of my journalism class extracurricular activities (plus I was in a playwriting class at the time). I was probably 20 at the time, and stood right next to John, having a music and theatre performance related discussion with him. I told him I was writing a play inspired by Jim and the Doors in regards to their use of Greek theatre and mythology. He was very intrigued and told me if my play makes it to Broadway, to give him a call! He was super nice, friendly and lighthearted. Because this was in the mid 90s, I didn't have a smartphone cell phone to capture my encounter with him, nor a personal camera because I didn't know he was going to show up at this mixer. One of the best rock-n-roll musician encounters I have ever had! During that time also, I had started writing a music column for our college newspaper, and after I graduated college, I went on to write more music articles for several publications up through the mid 2000s.

LOVE this review of Jim Morrison's vocals. For some reason, a lot of people dismiss his singing as being amateurish. Listen to his incredible baritone singing on "Touch Me". There is a live version of Love me Two Times (Stockholm) where he hits a very high note - I'll let you categorise it: ua-cam.com/video/pcAS_i79WYE/v-deo.html. During that same live appearance, he hits another stratospheric note (and holds it) as seen here: ua-cam.com/video/7Zzzt_r6wj8/v-deo.html. Then keep listening as he shows us incredible rasp (save us...Jesus!!!). How he could hit these notes and continue touring is beyond me.

Listen scream in "The Changeling", listen live version When the Music Over, listen deep voice in Riders on the storm, Listen People how Morrison was differential in Doors songs. For example "Been down so long" when he has deep, bluesy and he is drunk master of groove vocal style and look at "Crystal Ship," and "The Spy". I love The Doors, if you like too, listen all albums. Jim Morrison can learn very much about vocal and music and about be true in singing.

like him or hate AIC Layne Staley is in the top ten. Check out Mark Lanagan talking of touring with AIC and by the was just listening to Satellite Party Perry Ferrel solo release. He's in my top ten for sure and for me mood and personality with lyrics and intent make a great vocalist as well. If I don't like the songs doesn't matter how good the singing is. @divinelightshine

My claim doesn't rest on Jim singing everyone's songs better than he could. Though he has a much better voice than Mick Jagger or (say) Sting, he couldn't sing Paint it Black or Roxanne better than those guys. I'm saying he's the top popular singer overall.

I never thought about Elvis being a baritone before but now that you mentioned it, it makes sense that him & Jim are 2 of my favorite singers. That’s coming from someone who hates most singers, which is why I have gravitated towards instrumental music in my later years. So many male singers ironically seem to sing in much higher registers & since it’s so common it has become more & more shrill & grating to me over the years. Baritones definitely stand the test of time IMHO.

Jim had Scots blood in his veins, I can see him as a Pictish/Druid brimming with liminal incantations alongside an ancient broch.
      " I'm a Scotsman,,,,,,,,or so I'm told, the snake in the glen. "

Glad to see someone appreciating what a magnificent singer he was. Even after he drank away a lot of his range, he still managed to sing beautifully in a damaged, gravelly and bluesy tone on the L.A. Woman album that sounds like a man 20 years older than the first album, rather than just 4 years older.
He could also sing terribly when he drank. His producer said that by the 4th or 5th album, he had to piece together multiple vocal takes to hide the alcoholism affecting his performance. The song 'The Soft Parade' is made up of over 60 vocal takes hand cut together on tape.
But I think his voice on 'The Crystal Ship' is one of the most beautiful vocal performances ever recorded. The tone is astonishingly gorgeous. It was recorded on a Neumann U47 microphone along with the rest of that album, which Jim was delighted by because it was the same microphone his favourite singer used; Frank Sinatra.

Great video. Loved your analysis and choice of songs. Would have loved to hear in deeper analysis of what Jim was capable of doing during a LIVE concert where his vocal skills were at it's peek shock and awe. As the lead singer in a Doors tribute band, I can say first hand Jim had vocal skills that were nearly not human - almost like some sort of super power considering he was a baritone. He could do it all with that voice similar to Elvis or Sinatra or even Axl Rose or Eddie Vedder.

It you listen to Jims vocals in the doors 1965 demos his voice is complete different and a much higher voice and he really did not have that low muscular baritone he became known for . His voice is very thin and Wispy sounding but then a year later when they recorded the first album in August 1966 his voice had completely transformed constant rehearsal strengthened and deepened his voice. The hard partying probably added some extra grit to his voice as well.
